What a fun time we had with your beautiful mom and you today. Thank you for taking us along with you. You are such a natural at this blogging Bri, you make it LOOK easy but we all know it certainly is not. Missed seeing the children as they always delight but it was also nice to see you having a calmer day where you can actually finish a thought👍😊. As a mom of 5, I know how special those kind of days are, and then be so glad to have them all back again that night because life is only happy and complete with their noise and sticky kisses. Love to all of you.👍👍🤗💖
Bri if you want to get rid of the rivercane pull up on one of the plants without breaking the root. Then roll the root into a ball and put it in a a small plastic bucket with a lid and fill the small bucket up somewhat with a plant killer of choice put the lid on it and sit it in place so the plant absorbs the weed killer through it's roots. Please make sure your kids can't get to it. After a few days you should see many of the rivercane dyeing. Do the same thing to more of them until they all die.❤❤
It’s so nice you have your Mum I have lost mine and miss the fun and friendship we had every day. You may regret planting Mint straight into the ground it spreads like crazy.
Love your sweet Momma! ♥️ Cherish every moment with her. ♥️♥️ You girls seriously got a lot of work done. I am in awe of your grandfather mowing his lawn at 93 😮 You have some amazing genes!
my mom is 73 and looks a decade younger too or more. My dad is 76 and still has natural dark hair and many think him to be 15-20 years younger. Your mom looks great! I am glad she helped you out there!!
AWESOME job Bri!!!! You did it! Good to reward yourself for a job well done. Now like Old Alabama Gardener used to say, water it well and watch it grow!!!!! Loved that man! I am ALMOST your Moms age! I sure hope I can do like she does when I get that age! My problem is I don't know when to stop and I over do! UGH and I have heart issues!
I love it that you got a freeze dryer, I have had mine almost 3 years and love it!! Tip: After your machine is done with its extra dry cycle weigh your trays in grams and record and also feel your food. Run another 4-6 hours and weigh your trays again. If you haven't lost any or very little weight (1 gram or less) you are good to go IF the trays also pass the touch test (very dry and crunchy). If your trays have lost weight you will need to keep freeze drying. Seeds take longer to freeze dry. Happy freeze drying, I can't wait to see what else you do with your freeze dryer! You are an awesome Mama ♥
A day without the children, and you get to spend it with your mama😊 I'm your mom's age, I have two gardens, chickens, and honey bees. You are blessed, enjoy the time with your family. They grow up so fast. I have 14 grandchildren and hope to have a great grand in a couple of years. 😊 thank you for sharing your day.❤
Save your popsicle sticks and use them to mark where your plants are growing. What is river cane? Some weeds are edible. A lot of work, but the leaves feed the roots. Defoliate (?) the river cane.
Thanks for motivating me to get out into my garden. I’m enjoying having the house to myself for the first time in months but watching you has the garden calling to me. Yes I too set rewards for myself all of the time…an iced coffee, a few chapters of a book, an old movie. It makes those simple pleasures even sweeter.
On your zucchini chips, the issue may not be time as much as the addition of olive oil. From what I have seen/read, items with fats and oils don't freeze dry as well. Maybe try a mister and go lighter on the oil next round!
GO GIRLS !!!! what an amazing feat for you both to share together- I just loved this as I am the only gardener in my house & do it all by myself as my Mum & Dad passed such a long time ago. My Husband is amazing & will help with anything I need. Love You Bri. Cheers Denise- Australia
Your mom is amazing, beautiful & so sweet! I’m a little older than her & am learning permaculture gardening in the last few years. It’s been a lot of hard work turning my front lawn & other spaces from grass to gardens. It’s rewarding, though! Way to go ladies. This grandma appreciates your motivation! Blessings to all 🤗💗🇨🇦
Hello Bri,I am so please that your Mum is there to help out and keep you company planting ❤. I hope you get to be as active as your Mum and Grandad too🐦. Gosh you didn't need those Roots to stryggle with 🤨. That side is going to be Epic when it all comes together, great job Ladies🎉! JO JO IN VT 💞
Beautiful! I just want to comment that we always watch but hardly ever comment. I admire you and all you do for your family! Thanks for sharing! I also would like to offer some advice, you don’t want to bury the crown of plants and trees too deep. Tomato plants, yes plant deep but that’s about the only plant that I know of that likes to be planted deep.
Bri.... I love you and your sweet family❤ i love your mother❤ too.i just lost my mom feb 21st 1.5 months after her 80th Birthday 😢 and i love the dynamics you and your mom have between you. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us. And I also wanted to tell you that i am absolutely flabbergasted that you know the names of all of those weeds! I couldn't name 1 I dont think. I just love how much you actually teach me on every episode! Keep up the good work.
You are so right! Animals tie you down. I am at our summer place with dogs & horse ! My husband is working down south and feeding chickens! He comes on weekends! We just double up on waterers and food. But he can’t be gone too long!
Try spraying high acid vinegar on the cane plants. So over 10%. You can get up to way higher. It might help. It possibly will start killing the root system when new shoots pop up keep doing it. So wonderful seeing Mom today that was a great joy. And Mom is so beautiful and in fantastic shape. And we need to know how the chocolate mint tea is down the road! The perrenial garden is looking amazing and I can see the vision :) you got this. I loved the jump in the pool! Hugsssss
River cane reminds me of the Bermuda grass that I have here in Texas! You cannot keep it out of your gardens. I can’t seem to kill it off and it has the roots that run on forever and ever and ever and ever.!! 🙏♥️🙏♥️🙏
I have it too, here in SW Idaho. Doing research about eradicating it, I found that chickens will clear it out. I am hoping to put my chickens on the worst area to see if it works.
@@cynthiafisher9907 believe if just a clipping gets into the flower bed from mowing it will root and grow!! Bermuda grass that is. Of course if just a joint of root gets there it will surely grow!!
I think that little plant that you didn't know what it was is Lady's Mantle. It is a spreading ground cover type plant and the flowers are green. Don't quote me, but I think that is what it is. It has a very distinct leaf. I hate July gardening as well!
You might try spraying the river cane with 30% vinegar. Don't dilute it. Spray it on the leaves, not the ground. It is working for me on weeds that I haven't been able to get rid of any other way.
Where I am in Michigan, we have something called "Bouncing Bette", which is like river cane in that it has loooong roots that run along just under the surface of the soil and the plants pop up everywhere. My favorite tool for loosening those roots and getting at all of them is a 10 tine mulch fork, especially since you use wood chip mulch like I do, which tends to loosen compacted soil ... the 10 tine mulch fork really gets in there and loosens the root systems so you can pull them out more whole rather than break the roots and leave some in the soil to come back.
If you can't win with an invasive I would use it to make a swamp water fertilizer. It stinks but so beneficial for the soil 😊 learned this from David the good 😊
So you have a container you don't mind getting rid of? Use it as a shield and poison the river cane without getting anything else. For example, a 5 gallon bucket with the bottom cut out. I know you want to avoid poisons, but dealing with that might be your only choice.
Bri, you remind me of myself.....I buy nice healthy plants, then wait til they are almost dead to transplant them out........or I buy the discount/half dead plants! LOL
Bri, add 12 hrs extra at the beginning of the cycle! At the end of the original cycle, weigh and let continue to FD for a few more hours. Then take out and weigh again. If it hasn’t changed, it is finished! This was a game changer for us!
What is the additional cost of electricity on a freeze dryer? We are considering one for our family. I’m hesitant because of the bill spike in electricity!
From what I have read it is about 1.50 per day to run. Obviously I don’t run it all day every day, so I haven’t seen a huge change in my electric bill.
Hey Bri! I have found the freeze dryer takes a lot longer when it's hot. Having it in the garage in July is not ideal, and the humidity doesn't help either. You will find it processes much faster in the winter. In an air conditioned room with a fan blowing on the vacuum motor helps speed up the process, but it will quickly heat up a room as well, so I don't recommend putting it in a root cellar either because it will warm your storage.
Your gardens are looking amazing! !! Here in Vermont, my pest is bind weed and mugwort! !! I never planted her, but she is tenacious. Like the grass your fighting.. upside she holds the soil in place , downside she strangles plants, she is an amazing herb alley , often used in replacement of sage for smudging and gifts great dreams..

About the freeze dryer, you can change the settings to add extra dry time to every batch. I have mine set to add 24 extra hours of dry time. There is also the weight method to check for doneness: weigh your trays (in grams) individually when you think they might be done. Note down the weight. Hi to that grand mom, Mss Bri, i always love to see her always have time with you, much so she joined with the kiddos
From one mom to another …You are an awesome person Bri with beautiful children full of Love
great root cellar area, but you should put the sunflower seeds in a metal garbage can so they don't invite mice or rats inside.

Your house is great, especially with all those kids. It is clean. You are a great person & wonderful mother.
Your energy is inspiring. Thank you for showing us all no matter where we are in our life you keep on going and enjoying what you always enjoyed.
Shred that zucchini & make muffins. Chocolate chips & freeze and it's a wonderful, healthy breakfast. Or thaws by lunchtime in a sack lunch.
I love working in the garden in the summer heat
Your Mom is so cute! Just a Mom and daughter day!!
You are one amazing lady! ❤❤
The yarrow, especially the red one, will also self seed very readily and spread everywhere, same as the borage. It will be so pretty
Bri if you pre-freeze certain high liquid foods your freeze dryer won’t take as long. Sounds silly but it really helps!
Your mom is amazing! So are you!
Bri that was some feat to get all those planted ! Good job and what a fantastic way to reward yourself , can’t wait to see them all grow in 😊

Try without adding oil because oil doesn't freeze and seals the food.
Yes, I think that is the problem. You can add the oil after you reconstitute them.
