Bri, not sure if you realize this but once a month Aldi puts the grass fed organic ground beef on sale. You have to buy a 4 lb pack but it ranges in price from 4.50-4.99 a lb. I watch their flyer and go there to stock up when the sale comes.

I do this too. It’s a great price and I think the beef is excellent. My freezer is pretty stocked with this right now but every time I go and they have the family pack I pick up a couple more.

What I find at our Aldi's here is that everything you buy is close to or past the best buy date. I would not take the chance with meat especially....and do we know if it's really organic? I struggle with groceries and am really glad it's just three of us now, that all my kids are grown. I have a pantry that I'm working on with home canned soups, etc.... but there's no way I'll get to have a years worth unless God blessed me big time ❤

@@tinabloomfield7228 I’ve never had an issue with the ground beef. It comes in vacuum sealed pouches and the best by date is never expired. 🤷‍♀

If we take nothing else from your video, its the idea that each of us has our own context, life realities, and constraints and the way to cope is to be realistic about our individual lives and to make decisions (in whatever realm that it) based on what will work best for our family in this season. Thank you, Happy Thansgiving.

It’s so encouraging to see someone practically building a pantry one shopping trip at a time. I got discouraged when I started building my pantry because it was so expensive to do all at once and took months and months.

  • @AndreaRuralMN
    @AndreaRuralMN 9 месяцев назад +6

Building a pantry: worded a little differently, I do the same thing. I cook from mostly shelf stable/frozen foods. When I make a meal or use something up I add the ingredients to my shopping list. When I shop I replace what I used, or buy 2 3 4 extra if I need to build up that item. Ex: I make tuna noodle so I put a can of tuna, box of Mac and cheese, and frozen peas on the list. When something like ketchup gets empty, that goes on the list too. I'm storing what we eat because we already have eaten it before I buy more!

Bri, you are not the only one that loves some paper towels! I cannot function without paper towels at this point in my life. I always check my grocery outlet first especially if I am buying snack items. I have a full pantry I keep 20 pound containers of rice, beans, sugar, flour and I have 2 for flour and sugar. And I keep 3 freezers with frozen meats, vegetables from the garden, stuff to make meat stock. I think we could eat for 6 months to a year off of our stock. I hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Having that year of basic pantry/freezer foods has saved me more times than I can count, both for day-to-day problems to more longterm crises. It takes a little effort to make it happen, but it's so worth it to do whatever you can. It all adds up, and with a full belly you have a much better start to coping with whatever arises. And no guilt--yes! We all are in charge of ourselves and what we can do, and our choices. Inflexible purity is a prison of our own making. We shouldn't be all judgy about anyone else's choices, you never know what is going on for someone else.

Thank you for sharing your wise tips.
If I may, I'd like to advise your viewers to remember the elderly and disabled people in their world.
So many are struggling to keep food in their preps but, also need paper towels, freezer bags, foil, parchment paper, garbage bags, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soaps, toothpaste, maybe a new toothbrush, and who wouldn't want something special to make life sweeter like soft socks and house shoes.
Everyone is struggling with something; so a gift they can actually use is worth so much more than another doo dad that will most likely sit idle and collect dust until they die.
No one needs more chatzki (sp.).
We can always use useful gifts that show kind, meaningful, thoughtfulness.
I hope you and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving celebration!
    ✌️💖🙏

Maybe you should do a video on how to store for the freezer. I would be leery of any meat past 6 months. Being alone, I just devide & wrap with saran so I can see what I have, but there have been times I've had freezer burn on individual chicken breasts. Being a senior in a wheelchair, I only buy once a month and it's delivered. been enjoying watching your shopping videos.

    • @fionaworrell4535

Better to put meat in ziplock or even tupperware it keeps much longer without any freezer burn at all. Saran wrap seems to give up and not seal so well once frozen I've found.

We concentrate on meat, frozen veggies/fruits, fresh produce, dairy, grains (in that order); I rarely buy processed but if I do, it is a once a week treat. If we want a snack between meals, I look at bulking up our meals; snacking is really an American habit. I keep some dried fruits, meat sticks, nuts, seeds, raw veggies, cheese for snacks if we are needing convenience foods. If that doesn't do it, we turn to popcorn (popped on the stove). We drink filtered water, and I buy Pellegrino for a treat.

As you know my Mum had to do the very same for us. It's not easy on the Mums to figure out all these meals and snacks and stay on budget!
    She was a smart lady
asyou are and seemed to figure it out in the end.
As we got older she would give use 1.50 each to walk down to the Sub Shop on thursday nights.
A small sandwich a drink and a chip, those really were the good old days😂!

Great planning and frugal shopping. Due to finances being tight, I have learned to buy and eat frugal but healthy. Mostly I cook from scratch. NOw my finances are a bit better and I find it hard to splash out a bit because I have learned I don't really need those extras. I still make from scratch and may splurge a bit on a nicer cheese, or more exotic ingredients, but mostly I still buy frugal as I have learned that that's enough for me, I do not need to buy expensive unusual snacks etc. I love sewing and would rather buy some fabric lol or wool to knit 😉That is also how I save a lot, by making my own clothes, but not everyone can do that and I am very blessed I can

An important part of saving on your grocery budget is to buy items on sale. If you have an extra $5 this week and pasta is on sale for $0.99 each, buy five to put away. In a week or so, sauces will go on sale that can be bought at a low price, too. Then, when you want something like spaghetti, you have the basic ingredients for several meals at the lowest price. Repeating this method for commonly used items will build a pantry at the best possible price.

That is the way I shop. I do order large bags of oatmeal, rice, and beans from Sams and put in five-gallon buckets. Same with noodles, barley, and flour. Out of the flour so been buying couple of bags here and there. Will save enough soon for large size after Christmas. I also buy my furnace filters by the year; I order one for a month. My furnace lasted 24 almost 25 years to the day. Finally, the compressor went out on it. Wanted to put that on here because it really helps you furnace last a long time. Did have to have repairs done on the unit throughout the years but did not cost a lot.

I’m confused. If you still own the farm; why can’t Arthur feed out a calf? We used to buy a calf and just fed it in the pastures. No grain to finish it out. Just let feed on the grass and clover that grew native. So basically free. $100 for a dairy calf. Gelding $50. Butchered/ processed. Which y’all can do yourselves. Same for a pig.

When you go to Ingel's to get your organic chicken on sale (reduced for quick sale) look for sales on "organic" beef and pork. I buy meat at Ingel's a lot when it's on sale to stock my big freezer. I bought a turkey for 39 cents a pound the other day. I don't need it for Thanksgiving, but I'll cook it later on just to eat turkey. Good tips for folks. Maybe give the kids toast with peanut butter and jelly on it with some milk for breakfast instead of cereal sometimes for a quick breakfast.

I am glad you did this video - - I have been hesitant to buy ALDI brands for fear that I wouldn't like them. Shopping for one person I do have at least a year of most things stored in working pantry. However, I'm 76 and have within the last year lost the ability to taste. Also very seldom do I eat beef because of price. I do have an ALDI store about 12ish miles (I live in a very rural area) and I think I will make a trip down there - until now all I've gotten there are bagels. Figure if your kids will eat it - it's worth giving it a try. Thanks again.

Love this! We just relocated to NW Arkansas from Washington, we're starting over in every way but especially financially. This was my first ever garden here so more a year of experimenting, learning and amending the soil alongside with my poultry, goats and rabbit helpers. We're looking forward to next spring and summer where I can start growing enough to preserve enough certain crops to last a year (tomatoes, beans, pickles, relishes, green chilies, salsas (red/green), hot sauce, winter squashes, onions, potatoes, garlic and whatever else we can get to grow :). It sucks buying groceries right now- my bill has quadrupled in the past year and a half- how has the prices faired in your area?

Do you freeze you cheese? Do you have a generator for your freezers in case of power outage?

Bri I hope it won't be to long before you start canning you garden stuff. And making your own sauces and salsas. Store bought adds so much bad stuff. We just bitched another round of chickens to have enough for winter. Can't Art do chicken out on the property so you have them for the freezer?

I totally approve.. For families especially. The trick for me is to not overbuy if it's on sale unless I use it in a year. I used to have several years' stock up of some things.. but I've been scaling down for just 2 people. What really astounds me is how many younger working moms ( I'm 66 yr old grandma) buy fast food stuff for their lunches at work, but then complain about rent and other costs in life (all costs are up.. rent and gas is at least twice as high as 2 years ago) My hubby still takes left-overs or sandwiches for lunch even though he can more than afford buying his lunch but a coffee and drive thru lunch can be daily cost of 15$ a day.. rediculous! Also I know the ordering for pick up and delivery is so convenient for many.. I love going into stores to always check the sales. At least half the meat in my freezer has the red discount sticker on it. And ever once in a while, I'll strike gold with a store coupon or item on sale that I'd only see by being there. I feel for you young mothers trying to make ends meet.

You wanted to buy 20 pounds of the organic simply nature aldi butter. That is $6 a pound so you were going to spend $120 on butter? I been buying the regular aldis butter that’s been on sale for $2.50 a pound limit 6. I bought 24 pounds total for $60.
