I just found your channel today. I love the homemaking slow living channels and am subbed to many of them. The world is crazy and way too fast and it's nice to be part of a community that is still sane and real. So many people tell me I annoy them because I do things the slow way and take too much time doing things that machines can do (like clothes dryers). They say I waste too much time when I could be doing something else...but I AM DOING what I want to be doing. I love to line dry all of my clothes and living in the desert I can do it all year. Nothing like sheets that have hung out all night in the night breeze or in the day in the sun kissed air. I learned when living in Europe to air out my bedding once or twice a week. I line hang air my pillows every week in the sun when I change my sheets. Nothing like getting into a fresh bed of line dried linens and pillow. I'll never be too tired or too old to do these simple things. I'm subbed and look forward to all of your videos. Let's all slow down and do more for ourselves and our families.

I love to hang laundry on the line! I read one of your readers comments on etiquette on hanging clothes and I had to laugh! My mother taught me as her mother taught her about that etiquette. Underwear was always hung on an inner line between towels or something so as not to be visible to others. Like items were hung with like items. Clothes pins were carefully placed on shoulder seams, etc. Just brought back fond memories of my mom and grandmother. I can almost everything and what I don't can, I freeze. I did dry some herbs on a rack for the first time this year. I have an apple peeler/corer like yours, but I don't know where it is. I am going on a mission to find that thing before my apples are harvested in September. I love your channel!

I don't like to comment on channels as it is yours, not mine. No judgment, just my experience of my family owning and running steam laundries, etc. There is an etiquette to hanging clothes, which I still do in my seventies. Hang most clothes from the bottom. Like shirts, tees, and pants as to not leave marks, stretch fabric, and dry faster. There are many other etiquette on a clothesline. Like hanging undies behind towels and sheets. Using connecting clothes pins to save on space and pins when you can. Just my experience from my grandparents laundry etc.

I have been canning for at least 25 years and have never had an issue. I still use traditional pressure canners, however I love my electric Presto pressure canner for smaller jobs. It's a vety relaxed way of canning that fits right into your day ... and it's great for this season of my life whete I'm not feeding as many on a regular basis. I'm sure you'll love it and wonder why you waited so long! 😊
For elderberries - I like to steam juice the berries first (I cut off the thick stems but leave the small ones). I then reduce the juice by half and waterbath can with a little bit of food grade citric acid in each jar (1/8t per half pint). Mow the reduced juice is dhelf stable and ready for a bottle of elderberry syrup. My oldedt and his wife grow the berries, I process them, and then share the jars of reduced juice with my 3 children and their families.
As for my favorite way of preserving .... it really just depends on the item! I do all the methods - canning, freeze drying, dehydrating, freezing, and fermenting - and some things are really nice one way but not nice another way. For example, my favorite way of preserving beef is canning, but sometimes I'll freeze dry a load to use in camping meals. Elderberries don't freeze dry the best, but dehydrate really well. Zucchini 😊😊 usually an abundance... I have learned that shredding and freeze drying is perfect. I throw handfuls of freeze dried zucchini shreds into all sorts of random things. Herbs - most are best freeze dried ... they seem fresh out of the garden!
I usually grow a small bit of potatoes here, but my son-in-law grows a thousand or so pounds each year to share. He gives them to me in a 5 gallon bucket every so often and I can them throughout the week. I love canned potatoes!! Many people don't, but I wonder if they just don't know how to use them? If I want crispy potatoes, I put a jar of potatoes into a strainer, rinse well, spread onto a cotton flour sack towel to dry excess moisture off, spread onto a baking pan, toss with extra virgin olive oil, add some seasoning salt, and roast or broil until crisp. Yum!! Rinse and mash for mashed potatoes. Or just rinse and add to a soup or stew. Easy.
    Anyway... nice video!

@@cottagetime3336 the freeze dryer is nice, but expensive for sure. I had it on my "wish list" for several years before actually getting it. I try to invest in one bigger / more expensive item each year, so 3 years ago was the year for the freeze dryer. :)
I don't use it all the time, so I remind my daughter and daughters-in-law that they are welcome to give me things to freeze dry for them. It's nice to be able to share it!!

  • @witsonsmom729

I agree, I don't like wasting either. I waterbath and pressure can, dehydrate, and utilize my freezer. When I first started canning on my own, my grandmother taught me waterbath canning. Her recipes and methods were old and do not meet current USDA guidelines. She even explained this and bought me Kerr and Ball canning books for the current standard of the day. My mom canned and made various pickles, peppers, fruit, and jams too. My father even had us children canning pickles one year when I was about seven.. I called it playing Pickle Factory because he had us lined up assembly style, and each child had a duty in the process. And my father used to make sausage with a German friend and my dad had a smoke house. Food preservation is something I enjoy doing and really, a variety of family members enjoyed it over the years too. One method is not necessarily better than others overall. It depends on your needs, what you have on hand, and what you want from the product. My grandmother even taught herself to preserve olives after sending away for information on the process from her extension office. I really like that spirit of wanting to make and preserve that I saw in them. Your potato harvest looks good. I lay mine on a flat surface in the basement to harden them off. I'm going to look at the package of masa flour for tamales at the store to see if it's plain corn flour like you used in your recipe. 👍

I have a Lacunza that I cook on only in the winter. We actually live in a cottage and it heats the house too well so cannot use the oven too much on the wood cookstove. You have to get it up to 350 to bake anything and that is too hot for such a small space.
My potato harvest was disappointing. Spent 80 dollars on seed potato to get maybe 30 pounds in return. I live in zone 7a. This gardening season for me was a bust in everything except peppers. Too many of those!

I really love cooking on our little yodel stove, but we don't use them unless the temperature is below 20 degrees. One of my favorite things to cook is pot roast and veggies. The dehydrator I have was not too expensive, less than $100. It was on sale though. I would say pray & watch for sales on Amazon or even check thrift stores. I would add, lesson learned, to get a dehydrator with the fan in the back instead of the bottom. Those dry more evenly. God bless you, friend.

I agree with you that line dried laundry has a freshness and unique fragrance that only nature can give. Salmon patties are one of our favorite meals too. I have never tried corn flour in them, but will certainly give it a go. :) Home canning is tremendously rewarding. There is nothing quite like seeing rows of jars filled with the work of your hands. I do not put up game, because my husband does not hunt. I do take advantage of meat markdowns and specials at local supermarkets and can it. I also have a dehydrator. When you were talking about the ease of growing potatoes it made me think of a saying I was taught as a child. Welcome! I'm so glad you're here & thank you for watching. My dehydrator is Septree. The one with 4 trays. It's a cheaper dehydrator but works really good. God bless!

We need to preserve the history of food making. It needs to be shared by our younger generation. I hope they are interested.

I have that same spoon rest that you have! I am growing sweet potatoes this year for the first time, do you have any tips for growing them?

Great deal at hobby lobby!😄 For sweet potatoes, just be careful to not over water & if any danger of frost run & dig them up. I hope you get a great harvest!
