For the voice acting not coming off, it's because you got the game set at 44-48 khz. It bugs out for most modern soundcard. You can get around that on 44khz by using Creative ALchemy Universal and adding SoF to it so it enables EAX. (No need to select it in sound, it's your new "default" for sound device in the game now. Works with any souncard, just make sure you grab the universal one.)
This game is the coolest fucking thing I had no idea existed. It's like if you took the real-life aesthetics of Half-Life, the fast-paced arcadey satisfaction of Quake II's engine and gameplay, and turned the gore up to Mortal Kombat with Brutal Doom levels of dismemberment and blood, you get Soldier of Fortune. This thing is like the quintessential action movie, like Duke Nukem. Of course the level design is much more simplistic and linear, but that's really not a bad thing at all here.
8:30 The microwave gun has a secondary fire mode, that is a lot more satisfying than the primary one. It shoots a big wave that causes the enemy's limbs to expand and he will just explode into gory gibs.
I grew up playing this game. I was definitely too young for it, but my father still allowed me to watch him play it and then play it myself. It is very nostalgic for me! It can be handled better if you don't run in like a madman, but rather take your time and use a bit of stealth.
The top difficulty isn't as bullshit you're making it out to be. The game itself being really short, like below 5 hours of length makes the tougher highest diff to be justified in my opinion. To clarify, you don't call the Nightmare difficulty in Doom "bullshit" because that would be missing the point now wouldn't it ? SOF1s and the 2nd games best features have always been it's custom difficulty settings. Do I want the toughest enemies with no respawns and unlimited saves ? SURE.
far cry for on the normal settings had "masochistic" difficulty spykes but you defended it, challenging difficutly in sof is pretty balanced for experienced fps players imo
@@BrassBoy-ot4sy I'm a bit of a lunatic honestly. Let me just say that after playing your favorite game for many many years, you start knowing the exact locations of enemy placements and start learning the quickest route to a level so that the game doesn't last long. Especially on easy difficulty you can finish it below 4 hours. I finished max payne in the new york minute mode without using the bullet time and not dying once. Not because I'm a master or anything, but just playing a game you love so many times over the years certain things just get mapped down to muscle memory. You don't think you just do.
IIRC there was also a custom difficulty mode where you could tweak ammount of saves, enemy accuracy etc. which offsets the default difficulty problem somewhat. Also on snow level that is not a rendering distance, but a deliberately put fog effect, which NPCs obviously ignore since it's purely graphical.
still better then cod battlefield halo..... its a really good mindless fun game -nice level locations -Really nice weapons and almost all of them have secondary fire mode -great feel of every weapon -the effect on target is beyond epic GORE FTW -it still looks good -still runs great , even on modern hardware -Gameplay is Great -story and characters ..they are there but who gives a fuck -voice sound is done over a radio , its that bad -environment sounds are ok -weapon sounds are Very good -choosing load out before each level is nice -enemy variety.. basic dude or a chick with different skins and same animations & fucking dogs (you get to kill Duke Nukem over and over again wearing white tank top ) its a Classic for sure its over the top and silly but thats the point in a fucking game
So after watching all 3 reviews I went back and played 1 & 2 for the first time in about fifteen years. (I wouldn't play 3 again if you paid me) and I have to say, 1 is probably the most effective of them. #2 gets all caught up in the jank but 1 has a certain charm to it, like how the enemies do the classic mobster tommygun bullet-riddled death when shot with the smg. And as weird as it sounds, the gore in that game is still pretty shocking even though it's really low poly, particularly the fact that when someone is shot in the head there's a huge exit wound rendered on the opposite side, and maybe it's because I've seen exit wounds in real life but it actually made me grimace. Sure games these days are totally over the top with gore but none of it feels particularly realistic. Maybe the fact that this is so low poly is just enough to get your mind to have to imagine the rest, I'm not sure. The second games gore engine was more detailed but it seemed silly not gross, kind of like Postal 2. I think the best modern gore physics I can think of is actually the first manhunt game, when you either bash a skull open with the baseball bat and see the brains spray all over the place with actual chunks, or when you shoot someone in the head with a shotgun to leave a wet floppy meat basket on the neck, with brains sticking to the walls behind then falling off. Again, I've seen real shotgun headshots and the effect is a little too similar for comfort. It's the uncanny Valley in the worst of ways.
there is a custom difficulty setting and you didn't mention that btw if you change the audio frequency to anything higher than 11 speech will stop working
Since you have reviewed the Soldier of Fortune series which you had how to fail videos of for a long time but never got review them until now will you also be doing Robinson's Requiem?
"Tell ya huwhat", playing this game on hard is like the sniper level for allied assualt but for the WHOLE GAME, so many snipers in nasty locations, and so many silent ambushes from enemies.
Ironically this did gore better than the sequel. Sure the sequel has more destructible heads, but that's literally it. The original has way better textures for body damage and it also has guts spilling out of enemies. In SoF 2, the heads look like a mush of red triangles and in your entire playthrough you will only see guts spilling out maybe twice due to how rare that death animation is. Add the vastly superior combat of the original on top of this and you end up with a better and more gruesome game.
Intresting, well now that I have sof 1 through sofplus it isn't so irritating to play to me, though I much prefer the second game because of how good the shooting feels and the difficulty during gun fights is consistant and based of reaction time rather than luck like in the first.
Hey DWTerminator, could you review a game called Turning Point: Fall of Liberty? Its about alternate scenario where the axis won the war and in 1951 Germany invades the United States. If you do plan on reviewing it, my advise of how to get the game is to go to ebay where on all platforms you can get a copy that usually cost between $5-$10 which is pretty cheap.
That's good. To me personally I like the game as a guilty pleasure, though mostly for its setting. Its still not a game unfortunately, but I'm interested on what your thoughts on the game. :)
I'm an absolute masochist, I love to play blood on well done, I love to play shadow warrior on "whoooo wanta some wangggg?!" I love to play far cry 1 on realistic, and I love to play soldier of fortune 2 on custom difficulty with the enemy skill set to soldier of fortune level, though I do find sof 1 really annoying because of all of the bullshit enemy placements and that the enemy accuracy and damage output is completely randomised, sometimes they won't hit the side of a barn and even if they do hit you it does nothing, and sometimes they'll gun you down instantly, also your weapon accuracy is running off cone of fire and it is a bit of a handy cap.
If someone were to follow this dude's recommendations/reviews, we would not have the problem of huge piles of shame of good games...there would be maybe 4-5 good games overall XD
Some games, just need violence. Or a big junk of the fun is just missing. Ever played a "censored" Fallout game without the blood and gore? I tried. And its an devoid of fun experience. I had to stop! Ryse Son of Rome, suffered heavily from the lack of blood when you cut off someones limbs. It makes no sense what so ever. If i slit someones throat, or cut off an arm. The blood must spray like a garten sprinkler. Same goes for the Witcher the all the crappy Souls games and Asinine Greed Origins for example. Where you smash as a finisher, a giant axe in the face of an enemy. No blood or even off the head... Its just terrible design, to leave something this important out! If people don't like blood or mutilation. Put it in the options menu FFS! Lock it behind a password, like "open sesame".... The Fallout series. Soldier of Fortune. Or Severance Blade of Darkness - where you can beat the enemy with his comrades limbs. These games do suck, without the violence!!
This is a good game. And every one can get it for free, legally. Moddb & Sof1 org, provide a free community edition for this title. So the hard to recommend argument, is out the window!
I remember nerds, way back in school, were completely nuts for these old FPS. They'd scurry away during off-hours, then come back, point their pencils at one another and start running around in circles: Doom, doom, doom! It was pretty funny to watch.
Why do countries ban games like this when there’s a difference between the act of shooting a gun in a game and shooting a gun in real life and the fact that no real person is getting hurt in a game? This stuff baffles me considering things like violence and sexual content have been around long before this game and it’s no more taboo nowadays.
A: Laws that have been on the books for a long time but nobody bothers updating or adding exceptions to (ie. Germany). B: General ignorance of the ratings board members considering they almost never are people who actually play video games (ie. Australia).
yeah everything is nowadays so overthetop and silly from the past. man you sound like those new gamers who also say duke3d is also dumb and sexualized and silly. sof is still brutal and harsh and intense in atmosphere, IT'S A GAME and of course it was also more bloody and over the top, but to call silly? yeah all are now so mature that 90s and 2000s games are seen silly. stupid reviewers nowadays really. unsub!

Wait, how exactly did you miss the essential, CUSTOM difficulty setting?
I'm pretty sure you can customize your difficulty so if you want harder enemies but more saves, you can do that.
I grew up playing this game. I was definitely too young for it, but my father still allowed me to watch him play it and then play it myself. It is very nostalgic for me! It can be handled better if you don't run in like a madman, but rather take your time and use a bit of stealth.

Does anyone know of any good download sites for this game?I guess its not sold anywhere..?
Activision still owns the rights as far as I'm aware. That means you pretty much have to go for a physical copy.
Yeahh...
They need this on steam! God do I miss this game
Did you use SoFPlus for widescreen?
Yeah.
Well, did you have the graphical glitch? if so how did you fix it? sofplus doesn't fix that issue
sofplus did fix it for me
you must start the game by using Sof.exe in the installation folder instead of using the goglauncher

The sequel had a more in-depth story, though. But both were fun!
Where can you get it nowadays since it's not on steam?
Gud vid btw
Gotta track down a physical copy.
GOG has it now.
Just wanted to say. Install OpenAL for playing games from the 96-02 years. Also gives you access to proper 3D sound for those games.
So which game out of the series do you like best DW?
1, despite its problems.
Intresting, well now that I have sof 1 through sofplus it isn't so irritating to play to me, though I much prefer the second game because of how good the shooting feels and the difficulty during gun fights is consistant and based of reaction time rather than luck like in the first.
Did anyone play the Multiplayer demo?
How about a review of the IGI duology?
Project I.G.I and the I.G.I -2 Covert Strike
Eventually.

Technically that's not really legal.
And even for free, it's hard to recommend to the average gamer.
