Enemies know where you are at all times, are perfectly accurate at any distance, can see and shoot you through vegetation, fog and limited draw distance that you can't see through, plus they throw grenades that become invisible once they land in tall grass and kill you instantly. Add to it that you have a limited number of saves per level and a Goldeneye-style health system that's just aggravating to deal with, and you have a frustrating trial-and-error mess. Oh and the final boss has to be seen to be believed: a helicopter you can only damage in very specific spots and cuts you down in seconds if you so much as stick your nose out. Screw this game man.
Yeah, it's a disgusting, broken abomination at times, but some of the levels like the Hong Kong one are still quite enjoyable. The ones with stealth and excessive grenades are pure torture.
I also enjoyed the CQB levels set in offices and warehouses, but the taste is irremediably soured by anything set out in the open: siberia, jungle and desert levels are abysmal.
it's a shame since game was pretty enjoyable till that horrible jungle level where i dropped game, still even if this level wouldn't exist and ai would be fixed it's still worse than amazing sof1.
I have played this game so many times and always enjoyed it, still love coming back to it, it was so revolutionary back in the day and its crazy to see that it kinda still is today, I have seen multiple reviews where people said the game is difficult, thats very strange cause I never felt that, the only times I was struggling was with the stealth mission, a little bit, and then the helicopter boss, other than that I didnt have much problems with it, I guess I wasnt really getting too mad when I died but I dont remember dying that much honestly xD I would definitely recommend this game, its a lot of fun and its just not something you get nowadays in an FPS game, its quite a unique experience :) I would love to see a video from you on Red Faction, another revolutionary classic, that would be cool :)
I use a mod that includes the best fix ever... Grenades landing do the same noise than nades in the CoD games. Instantly recognizable and does the job better than what the game did.
do a review of Urban Chaos from 1999 aka the game that first introduced open world levels with vehicle driving and even ability to climb on virtually any building
Played the PC multiplayer of this game 2001-2011. The game was really good mix between careful tactics(Counterstrike) and going Rambo(Quake). The game had some unique things too like how well the throwing of grenades was balanced with the rest of the action. Call of duty 1 was basically WW2 mod for Sof2 so when 4th COD returned to Modern Warfare it was basically Sof3. Even had an oddly familiar character with a moustache :D
After some effort, I completed the cargo ship first map with stealth, but man was it difficult, especially with the immediate alarm that apparently every enemy carries in their pocket. You also have the option of concealing bodies, although as you mentioned, the stealth stuff sure feels a little lacking.
Good review as always DW, but 80% of the footage was extremely dark. I ended up downloading it and manually crank up the gamma too about 120% in my media player too see how the actual graphics looked.
I bought it for $8 on GoG. I have Windows 7 64bit and runs fine. I got this a few days ago and the sale is still $8 instead of $10. They have a three game series but I heard the 3rd one was bad.
The AI feels unfinished, half the time they will try to force you out of cover with grenades or advance on you with flashbang/smoke grenades, but then the other times they will just charge at you suicidally, it's especially funny with the shotgunners trying to sprint across huge open areas. Occasionally enemies will also shoot at you from cover, doing the exact same leaning around corners stuff that you're forced to do the whole game, but this is fairly rare. Another funny thing is that your thermal googles can be very useful to see through the walls of the next room, but some of the enemies only spawn in when you enter their area, which results in you doing a quick scan before entering - seeing no enemies, and then prompty getting blasted in the face with a USAS-12 as soon as you open the door... Despite the annoyances, I always come back to this game every few years, opening up on the bad guys with the Grease Gun, the M60 and the shotguns never gets old, and it's a damn shame that the series ended here, with no hope for a proper follow up.
Due to censorship reasons all characters in the german version were robots. They even made up some ridicioulus reason for that. Something about a parralel universe and stuff. Nobody played that version though since the main selling point was blowing some dudes brains out which was edgy af back then.
Only thing i cant stand in this game is that every damn enemy ends up in the same position after their death animation is finished... Also with a twitch. I wish so much for a fix for this so they could lay in different ways after they are dead. Everything else about this gore ghoul system is amazing. I guess the only other remarks i have the constant grenade throwing comming your way and the end boss is pure shit. Other than that i actually love this game alot.
Why does everyone take such a dump on the Colombia chapter? It was my favourite part of the game! This game is very nostalgic to me, even though it is old and has its problems.
where did you get/buy the SoF games? GoG Forgot what their name stood for and prefers to release more and more crap instead of "good old games" and my old cd doesn't want to run on W10
Physical copies. And GOG can only sell what they have agreements to sell. The SOF games haven't been available for a long time so it's entirely possible they're in rights hell right now along with No One Lives Forever.
at least no one lives forever has that fan re upload I recall playing the first game when I was 5 or 6 could not get past the first level for some reason my dad allowed me to play this game but not gta3
I don't know why anyone would remove the gore effects from such games? Ever played a Fallout game without the gore? I did, and it removed at least 40% of the games fun! Thank god for Bloodpatches if you live in a country run by a..holes! What, you are an adult? And that game's audience, is adults only? Too bad, We the governments shitheads, say no gore for you!
If you thought Soldier of Fortune: Payback was bad, wait until you play Gods and Generals. (As an aside, don’t you think the customizable difficulty renders your complaint about the save system moot?)
I loved this game. Single player was ok but multiplayer was where it was at. The maps were great, m203 and rapid fire shotty was annoying. Think I played around 5-10 hours a day and in the top 50 on clanbase at the time. Modding was fairly easy thanks to the file format that was basically . Zip but something like . Pkg I think. Leaning was very common and was a big technique due to the hit areas not being right so it gave you the edge. Classic game that I wish I could go back to on multiplayer, last time I went on a few years ago punkbuster didn’t do shit as cheaters were everywhere.
Yeah, I had so much fun with the first Far Cry without significant patches on the hardest difficulty so the enemies had pinpoint accuracy and they could see (and shoot) through tents and some walls. I loved every second of it.
I absolutely hated how they redesigned combat system. It's hard to understand if you hit anything unless youre at point blank range because of dumb recoil system. And those hit scanning enemies devour all your health instantly from any range. Stealth mechanics are very poorly implemented. Slow walking speed also doesnt help . First SoF was fair to the player and it was simply fun to play. SoF 2 tried to be middle ground between tactical shooter and standard old school shooter but they did terrible job. Nothing worked right.Except gore effects of course. If I want tactical fps I would play ghost recon (original)
First SOF has plenty of BS deaths too. There are just ways to mitigate the issue once you know where the BS is coming from. That's not so much the case in SOF2.

Can you review urban chaos riot response?
If I ever find a copy, maybe.

... That *is* how the game looks.
I truly believe you :D
It's a great game .
I miss the multiplayer of this game, and I have yet to find anything that I can enjoy since.
It was definitely fun! There were still people playing it around 2014.
Did I mention that Syndicate ( 2012) has the most beefi-est of beefy sounds? I'm sure I did.
Nice review! Any chance of reviewing Stalin Subway?
Eventually. If it works.
lmao
I played it with a mod that makes recoil much more arcady and it was marvelous fun. It also rebalanced damage and changed weapon models but whatever.
what is the mod name?
teban67 you have to look it up, it was years ago. But it's worth it I assure you.
There are still some multiplayer servers being used
The fun in this game was the multiplayer.
Speaking of tactical shooters, please do take a look at Novalogic games like Delta Force.
I already did.
Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and/or Jedi Academy review?
You should use the search function on my channel page. I reviewed those quite some time ago.
Oh
where did you get this game ?, i been looking for a way to play the pc version for months
Physical copy. Sadly the game isn't available in digital.

GOG just added them.
Is it me or does the blood in this game look photo realistic, in basically every other game even games with modern high end graphics it isn’t.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why Germans don't just push for reform of the laws that put games like this on the index.

Well if your a masochist like me, you can put up with the games problems and love the difficulty, the only game I can't do that with is cod 2.
Yeah, I had so much fun with the first Far Cry without significant patches on the hardest difficulty so the enemies had pinpoint accuracy and they could see (and shoot) through tents and some walls. I loved every second of it.
This game has terrible lighting
Being honest, I've seen Quake 3 mods that look better than this. I'm not naming them.
Quake 1 with dark places already looks better than SoF2
I absolutely hated how they redesigned combat system. It's hard to understand if you hit anything unless youre at point blank range because of dumb recoil system. Best shooter of it's time. But if you lack skill you hate it. Go play cod noobs
Well Killing Floor 2 is pretty gory...
Yeah but it's not so much gruesome as it is hilarious.
gears of war and dead space are a really nonsensical comparison because there you are killing non humanoid aliens and demons
I hate the whole short control burst thing.
i love this bad game
