    I get why watch lovers are annoyed with modern Rolex. However a lot of vintage Rolex pieces are very hyped too and they come with a lot of problems due to their age, which can be costly to fix in the long term. Why not go for Tudor instead of vintage Rolex- as Tudor pieces are affordable and some are better quality watches, and both brands are part of the same family?

Tudor is a great brand as well and super close to Rolex because they basically are Rolex but for people really wanting Rolex I think it’s a different itch to scratch. Rolex watches you could always get serviced at indep places and they should be very reliable for along time

      This is true and is a fair point. Maintenance for vintage pieces are costly, as their parts have been long discontinued and are now hard to get. Especially for those who would only trust an RSC for a routine maintenance, a full service on an un-serviced vintage piece would be an absolute bill shocker (2x or more costly) as compared to a more modern piece as RSC would change many parts on a vintage piece.

    Very solid advice!!! I agree 100%. Put in your name for a modern Rolex, keep up with appearances, and friendly conversations from time to time with your AD. In the meantime enjoy other watches within reason, or go for vintage Rolex. If you get the call, great! Go buy and don't flip. That's what I've always done. I wait for my new Rolex and buy fun watches that I can enjoy, keep, or sell when I get the call. I can assure everyone, there will be a time when you will stick to one watch no matter how long you waited or wanted that Rolex. At the end of the day it's just a watch and we have only two wrists. As you progress in your collecting journey. You might come to realize less is more, quality, over quantity, function over form. The best collections are the most useful for your lifestyle. One watch, or one watch for every occasion for your lifestyle. When you have over 4-7 watches you will tend to forget most of them. You will not enjoy the watches that you haven't grown to bond with. You don't give a watch a chance to become a part of your personal style. Some of the best watches are the watches where a man wore that particular watch everyday. For me, I'm still in the journey and hunt for that next meaningful watch. I went from 10 decent watches to 3 do it all watches. Speedmaster Pro, JLC Reverso, Rolex Explorer 36mm 2021. I sold my Panerai, Sub ceramic date, IWC Mark 18, and a bunch of affordable entry level watches (Seiko's and what not). Now I'm on a list for a Pepsi, and looking to get a A Lange 1815 and Patek annual calendar in 10 years. In the end I will end up with 6 solid watches that I can leave my son with. So for those who wish for a Rolex. Keep at it, focus, save, and get your Rolex. This is a marathon not a sprint. These things are expensive and should be thought of carefully before you decide to make a serious purchase.

I have a far bigger foot in the Rolex camp than I do in the omega camp but have to say love the aqua terra and think it is so much better than either of the Rolexes . Good discount and blinding watch that’s obtainable . Agree vintage is a definitely an option but then again so is omega . I think modern Rolex has become like some strange Easter egg hunt . I suppose this is driven by the fact that people think there’s some cash to be made if they sell.. but if you are wanting a watch to wear and enjoy like so many say then price is inconsequential. Vintage Rolex is a minefield. Hands, dials, bezels and other parts may have been replaced. You could find yourself with a frankenwatch if you are not careful. The level of expertise needed to safely venture into vintage Rolex-land can not be overstated.
    I bought a vintage Speedmaster a couple of years ago after buying "Moonwatch Only", a $290 comprehensive book covering all manual Speedmasters from 1957 to date, and I would say Speedmasters and other Omegas are safer to collect than vintage Rolex to begin with (although mint original Speedmasters are getting harder to come by year by year).
    I came to the conclusion that I could buy a watch in a little less than perfect condition so I could wear it regularly and save some money too.

  • @michaelfierman3256

    I think it may be one of your popular videos actually. There are a lot of people who are tired of "surrendering their dignity" to Rolex ADs. This could lead to a couple of scenarios. The one you propose of course appeals to the collector type who probably has a lot more knowledge than most enthusiasts to the hobby, especially the new enthusiast. THE other scenario is the one that is surely taking place. People that might have gone to Rolex are finding themselves quite happy with Omega and Tudor and to a lesser extent, other brands. IN the end I do think that one thing most watch guys have in common: we love the hunt. Whether it's vintage Rolex or whatever else gets you going, we all share that quest for the new piece. Great episode!

    • @DrRolexPhD
      @DrRolexPhD  2 года назад

      Thanks Michael!
      Yeah I knew this one would ruffle some feathers!
      A lot of people said something like "vintage comes with a series of headaches that modern simply doesn't", and that's true, I agree. But overcoming those headaches, researching your way through reference numbers and parts numbers, avoiding the overpolished examples, finding a perfect amount of patina for you...these challenges make the hunt more gratifying in the end.
      I made this analogy in another comment. It's kinda silly but I think it works: buying that perfect vintage or pre-ceramic Rolex is like hunting a mammoth with your bare hands, whereas buying a modern Rolex from an AD is like setting a mammoth trap and checking-in on it every now and then.
      Now that I'm rewriting it, it sounds pretty dumb lol. BUT YOU GET MY POINT!!

  • @riservaditempo
    @riservaditempo 2 года назад +4

    I am sure someone like you with persistence at an AD should be able to secure something. You seem to have the right personality for this as you did very well at the RSC from your past videos. I own a modern GMT and a vintage Sub and my AD picked me for that GMT and I am not really a high roller, I am pretty much like you, an enthusiast. I am not a reseller as I genuinely love these watches. I am not a fan of other jewellery or other watches either. I was a Rolex fanboy since I was a kid, so I don't buy other stuff.
    My honest opinion, the vintage models are not nearly as nice as the modern ones in any way. I like my Sub because it was with me for many years, but watch wise it doesn't compare to a modern GMT or Sub. I would probably swap it for a new Sub if I could, but it is very comfortable and it flies under the radar more (Modern ones are way flashier, TBH not many people ever even noticed my 5 digit sub). People bashing the modern Rolex usually have never owned one, same for people bashing the modern jubilee. Modern jubilee is a work of art and the most comfortable bracelet I ever wore. By modern I am referred to current generation with the upgraded movements, not simply the ceramic.
    Buying vintage is a minefield of problems, you don't know the history of the watch and where it has been. I don't agree that vintage Rolex has more character, when I got my pre-ceramic in the 2000's it was THE common cookie cutter watch. Everyone had one. It took me a year to find because I didn't want to pay anywhere near market price and got it at like 45% off MSRP of a new one. At the current prices you're paying as much as a new one costs for a vintage one with a questionable history. The 40 or so hour power reserve is sketchy at best and usually dies after a day unworn, modern doesn't have this problem. Vintage is off 6-8 seconds per day even with RSC service, modern runs at +-1. Vintage bracelet is tinny and the clasp is kind of shitty but somewhat nostalgic.
    I would suggest picking up a Tudor and keeping your name on the list. If you aren't a high roller that Tudor will eventually serve as your travel watch. The black bays are basically a vintage sub minus a few cut corners.

But it is understandable, as the prices of vintage pieces come close to modern ones, the modern ones will once again pull further ahead, thereby causing vintage pieces to follow suit in an endless, vicious cycle. I guess, today is always better than tomorrow to buy a sought-after piece, whether vintage or not.

    Great content, but I’d say it slightly different on the topic of buying modern vs buying neo-vintage/vintage/pre-ceramic - it’s the difference between buying a watch with character (i.e a pre-ceramic or vintage watch) vs buying a watch whose character has yet to be built. Meaning, yes I agree that chances are the 1994 Datejust you buy today would be different than the 1994 Datejust that someone else may own, but if you and someone else bought a modern Rolex today, fast forward 20+ years and I’m sure they will have their own character! I also know a patek collector who recently stopped with watch games, after the local AD (one of the 2 in his country), kept coercing him to buy all these grand complications (5496p, 5905p, 5270p) to get him into a list for 5212a, now telling him to buy a 5230g to "move up the list", he called it quits. in his country, rolex ads have daily waitlist (ppl just wait in line like black friday, just to get w.e available; each person limited to prof. model a yr), which i actually think encourages resellers, to my disgust
    I do see the point on buying vintage rolex, or recently discontinued rolexes, instead of AD. some of them are still more affordable than modern, in production rolexes (considering retail or grey price). Bracelet wise, the jingle jangle bracelet actually is a bit charming and more comfortable, though you surely miss the glidelock or easy link. However, going this route., I do not recommend unless the watch lover knows wtf he is doing. the difficulty in getting the cost (esp. if RSC refuses service), high chance of watch being previously frankened, the compromise in daily wear, due to age, all should be factored in. parts are harder to find, sometimes water resistance is compromised, cases are overpolished, and movement does act quirky, despite recent serviciing. Many buy a crappy old mercs or porsches, then get owned by the huge repair bills, and then let go at a loss. vintage rolexes are the same. In short, buying a vintage rolex should only be for someone who wants THAT vintage rolex, for its notable features (i.e. 40mm case polar, no-cyclops sea-dweller 4000, or the ability to swap bezels to coke or black in 16710s) not replicated by modern offerings, who also understand the risks of potential upkeep cost. Also, know that these vintage rolexe, you are still paying over retail, even with inflation adjusted.
    Tudors are great alternative, and are more beater friendly. However, it is a close, but no cigar, and you will eventually want a rolex. tudors are great daily for you to rock, if you want 80% rolex fun, while flying under the radar and avoiding potential muggings. tudor, imho are good "transitional piece" or "complementary piece", in respect to the rolex counterparts.
    my suggestion, is still to try to get a watch at AD at retail if you can, without playing the games. utilize your friend/connection cards, utilize your presistance, if you have no money. it works. If you still need to scratch the itch, get a tudor, used (more cost efficient) or new from AD, and wait it out. My comment is based on my current and past rolex/tudor ownership experiences, involving AD, grey, used and vintage. (new sub from AD, recently discontinued modern rolex, a vintage 5 digit, and a used tudor BB)

    I liked the video and there is some true. Some of vintage pieces looked very classy and some lovely with a bit patina at the indices. But if you think about it getting a GMT 16710 is 300% above the original cost now. I had a 16710 for almost 20 years. I liked the modern GMT with bigger markers and a bit more of a statement. Four months ago I did a straight trade on my 16710 Pepsi to a friend for an unworn DJ 41mm. Wimblendon dial-fluted-jubilee. I have no regrets.

    Great video - no surprise that I agree with this. So much of the ceramic Rolex desire out there is directly related to AD's refusals to sell punters pieces - it drives people mad. We are so used to retail shops pandering to us, and sales people groveling to make a sale, that when we see a shop refuse our money it drives us crazy. And of course, there're the bragging rights and flexing on social media that a retail piece will get someone. If you factor all the mind-fu#%ery out of it, and just look at the watches from an aesthetic point of view, the 5 digits come out on top. That's a subjective statement, of course! But Rolex could have transitioned to the ceramic pieces in a much more fluid way: less polished services, more compact cases, more narrow bezels inserts - but they went upmarket.

Unless you're willing to pay big bucks to an expert who can find a good piece for you, you're bound to get something that's been polished, repaired or replaced. Especially the further back in time you go. Which I understand is part of the thrill. But not sure I'm ready to play that game quite yet.

Buuuut let’s be honest, that’s not enough. Building a rapport with my watch sales agent. Remembering him on holidays, birthdays, and whatever. Not anything significant but creating a bond with him/her. Aaaaaan where’s the watch!? In a safe lock box after; hmmm…. yeah 15 mins of wear. Is it my dream watch!? No. So I like it? Sure. Love it? No. I enjoyed the hunt far more than the purchase. Before I get hate… Why did I do it!?AD strongly eluded that I would get the watch I wanted which was the Rolex Submariner this year. Although I love the look of vintage Rolex with faded ghost bezel and tropical dials, I am too afraid to buy vintage. I feel the same when it comes to buying a used car. I also don't like that I'm wearing a watch that already had a story from it's previous owner. Like others said my solution to this first world problem is buy a Tudor. They still have the aluminium bezel that will fade over time and it will be me that is creating the story. I feel that Rolex went with the ceramic bezel because it will always look shiny and new. I want it to age with me, that way it looks as vintage as I do. lol However, I'm all about the dial and bezel, not so much about movements and even whether it's automatic or quartz. A large part of my 42 watch collection are Timex watches which I love just as much as some of my luxury watches. I recently had occasion to visit some old friends, and while enjoying some adult beverages and losing badly at 8-ball I related my new-found interest in watches: collecting them, wearing them, enjoying how it feels to have time attached to my wrist. I was wearing a properly, legitimately branded piece that cost me about 1.5% the price of the Rolex which it resembles. Our host ran upstairs and returned with an obvious fake Daytona that a friend had given him years ago. He knew it was a fake, and so did his friend. Now it's mine, traded for a pristine copy of "Thriller" on vinyl (I had two). That fake, and the various "show-mage" watches that resemble Rolex models, are the closest I'll ever get to owning a Rolex, new or vintage, and I'm way more than OK with that. The money I'm saving by not needing a Rolex (or any other multi-thousand dollar watch) is going to retire my mortgage early and get me a Triumph Tiger.

      How will you lose money if you have a Rolex? If your able to buy a Rolex at retail price you are walking around with free money on your wrist. Even the vintage watches are going over what their list prices were

    consider TT Rolex Sports watches, They are easier to get at AD. Bluesy and Rootbeer are stunning!

      @@DrRolexPhD I have the Rootbeer and Bluesy. I think they are a cut above the stainless steel models. My takes if you are spending that type of money might as well get some gold.

    Rolex will be my first luxury watch , my only one if I can saved enough but I couldn't because is getting more expensive especially the grey market and none in the AD. So I gave up and go for Omega.

    • @DrRolexPhD
      @DrRolexPhD  2 года назад

      Omega has it's own merits, but if you want a Rolex, you'll never be satisfied with an Omega. You'll waste money flipping it.
      That's just my opinion, because that's essentially what happened to me.

    Its crazy , we have more and more people crying about heartless AD and demand and prices grows like mushrooms after rain, just f this Rolex bullshit and go buy different brand if you love watches, oh no sorry most semi expensive brands do not guarantee any profit if you want sell watch after while and 99% people do not recognize what you have on wrist. This Rolex pop culture is sad thing.

    Dr Rolex PHD, you are so funny hilarious, where do people get this notion, this foolishness from about old be better,more gratifying.
    Watches have charter, no vintage is just plain old,like black and white televisions.
    This other thing you are talking about, current Rolex is more common, vintage more exclusive. This l am different because I have what someone else does not have is sick.
    Lastly going with your advice more people would be wearing more vintage than the most beautiful Rolex 124060.
    I have handled old and current watches the Rolex submariner 124060 is absolutely beautiful.

    The problem with not buying directly from an AD is that the piece even with box and papers may be fake. That's the kicker.

    • @DrRolexPhD
      @DrRolexPhD  2 года назад

      Yeah if you're buying on places like eBay, and MAYBE even Chrono24. But if you buy from a reputable dealers with a physical store, it won't be fake.
