Rolex Absurdity

  • What the hell going on with the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 Turquoise? I don't know, but it's absolutely absurd.
Prices for the model are unbelievably high. Who's buying them at this price? Approximately zero people. But that won't stop dealers from trying!
We can thank Patek Phillipe for this. The Tiffany Nautilus recently sold for over $6 million at auction, solidifying the hype for Turquoise-dialed steel sports watches. Now, people want similar prices for the Turquoise OP41, a $6,000 watch....

PP, AP and Rolex are almost exclusively traded among dealers. It’s like a Ponzi scheme right now. They are betting up each other. There’s no shortage of Pepsis, Daytonas or PPs. There’s plenty of them at 24chrono. The fat lady will start to sing very soon and it all will fall like a house of card’s. History ALWAYS repeat it self.

@@DrRolexPhD honestly I bought it because I loved it. I was on the list for one year- I told my AD to just forget it because once it got incredibly popular I knew I would never get one. They are lucky if they get one 41mm Tiffany per year. I paid $16,000 BEFORE Marc Goldberg lol. I knew they would go up and hold value. They simply don’t produce enough of them. Went to dinner with my Grey market dealer (I buy from both) and he offered me $25,000 on the spot. He’s also holding a fully sticker version just in case. Prices were holding for a while but then the rumors of discontinuation and the hype behind the Patek Tiffany have made this my best “lucky investment” so far. Since I hate flippers - I don’t think I’m selling. I still want the red and yellow OP’s but this was always the standout. I don’t want to sell. I bought it for my collection. As I tell my AD- I am NOT a flipper- I’m a collector and actually enjoy the watches. Great video man- I was waiting for someone to discuss this at length.

Nice video. I had my eye on this watch since it was released in 2020. Not because of the hype, but because I actually liked the color and thought it would be a neat watch to wear in the spring and summer…. Been waiting for 2 AD’s and both have said they haven’t even received one all year. I do believe them as one sold me a Batman and black Daytona (without me even asking for one?) and my buddy has spent $$$ at the other. Grey market dealers and sellers who are listing the watches at these astronomical prices are crooked and shady people who are looking to exploit real rolex lovers and buyers who just want to Own and wear the watch. The whole situation is a hot mess however I don’t blame Rolex as a company it’s we the people who are causing all this hype and malpractice . Rolex and the good Ad are selling their product at the retail prices . This has nothing to do with the brand of Rolex. It’s the grey market and the grey market just capitalizes on what is can. If Omega or Breitling marketed itself as a whole to be this desirable over their supply, the public market would do the same thing. Certain models of other brands do occasional draw a similar hype and with those models, the same effect occurs. It’s not Rolex’s responsibility to supply more watches to satisfy all demand, that’s marketing and sales 101. Why would it be virtuous to tarnish their brand desirability and longevity? Rolex does manage its past, present, and future of their clients portfolio with this marketing, it keeps their clients of any era happy, interested, and feeling special. What products should all aim to do.

Here comes the cynic …So when you buy your own watch for 100k by paying “dirty” cash to your bank account, all the sudden you have laundered 100k. You pay a 6.5% fee to Chrono 24 and everyone is happy. People do this with fake wine too. Also you pay off politicians and other sordid people by overpaying for goods.
Need a favor? Sure just buy my 6K Rolex for a100K.
Also brands buy their own auctions to run up the prices because it increases brand prestige and is good advertising. Did you see how meticulously Phillips read the tax law prior to the Patek auction? That’s because Tiffany and or Patak is going to deduct that 7-$8 million to make all that advertising almost free.
Well now it is NFTs not wine much anymore actually.

    • @DrRolexPhD
      @DrRolexPhD  2 года назад

Huh, interesting. Yeah I guess it's a way to launder money. But isn't the buyer left with a watch that isn't actually worth the 100k he paid?

Apologies, I shouldn’t really be here, but I love the OP Tiffany. However, I just look on in bemusement at the crazy prices and the games you have to play at Rolex AD’s.
So, I went and bought the Pagani Design version at just 92 euros. It means I can just wear the watch on my wrist and enjoy the aesthetics of the design and the colourway without having spent thousands, and without the fear of losing such a valuable timepiece.
I love Rolex but know I will never get to own one, so this is the next best thing for me.
By the way, loved the New York video. I had a walk down 47th street when I was there and it seemed a real jungle.

It will go out of fashion if Rolex continue producing them in high numbers for the next 10-15 years. Rolex is the master of market manupulation and more so with social media's help.

Prices are higher even than a Daytona, a more complicated timepiece, also with 3 x RSP, which you still have to pinch yourself to believe. I hope they do keep making them and the eejits that pay 20x over list are burnt.

@@DrRolexPhD the current market has all models going up including the pre ceramics. I also have a 16610 and the price has gone up dramatically in the last 1-2 years. And every event that draws attention to Rolex causes all models to go up to varying degrees.

when you buy a watch for $5,900, you will have no hesitation to wear it. However, when the price reaching $35,000 or more after the purchase, you will not wear it anymore because every scratch will cost you a $1,000+. You will put it in a safe and wearing something cheaper instead, of course, unless you are super rich and a few thousands here and there means nothing to you.😂

Amen brother. Only a select few are actually out there wearing this watch.

Well and it is one thing to buy a PP or RM or AP for $100,000 and get insurance. Will an company insure your $5,900 watch for the $70,000 you paid when others are out there for half or less?

Interesting to see - if possible - who is selling. Definitely someone who I would blacklist. Possibly organised crime. At these prices, organised crime is likely to get involved. Stay away.

Interesting theory. I'm rewatching Sopranos right now, so I'm thinking about Tony gobbling up a bunch of baby blue OPs 😆
But hey, it's definitely something I could see them getting into.
