Great video! And I agree. I’m actually left handed and wear my watch on the left hand.
Rolex told me they don’t want to market the watch as a watch for left-handed, so nowhere on the website will you find that; only that it is the watch “with the crown on the left.” People can decide how they want to wear it.
Good call on the Air-King. Rolex told me it was not just about the space between noon and five but also because “05” looks more like a cockpit instrument. And you’re right, the (unnecessary) faraday cage made the watch too heavy. They removed it. I’ve published more thoughts on Rolex Magazine. Take care bro, and good work!! I believe it was your video!!!
Thanks Danny!
That's interesting that they didn't make it with lefties in mind. Still leaves me wondering what the point was, other than to shake things up. You think they're gonna make more of these inverted watches? Or is this a one-off?
@@DrRolexPhD I don’t know. But Rolex did tell me the green and black GMT bezel will be reserved for the LH movement. Meaning, they want people to know from afar it is a LH movement when they see a green and black bezel. So, no green and black bezel on a normal GMT and no Pepsi/Batman bezel on a LH movement GMT.
Also, to answer your question about the point of creating such a watch, Rolex CEO is left handed, and I was told by Rolex that it was his idea to build such a watch (he is also a GMT fan). I just published a story showing that it wasn’t a Rolex first: Rolex has made several “Destro” in the past
As soon as I saw this new Airking I thought, finally Rolex is listening to Dr Rolex. Now it just needs a jump hour hand and a new dial that is aviation related. Now that you have Rolex’s ear, could you please tell Rolex to make these changes? Thank you
Lmao yeah I'll make a video about it. While I'm at it, I'll bump us up the wait-list!
I agree. The dial looks balanced now.
We’ll done, Doc. You just noticed that there was bad typographic spacing without the “0”! Love from your graphic designer cousin.
You are damn right: once you have seen it, you cannot unsee it
Totally!
The 05 concept came from ID guy Chanel
Yes
The flip lock clasp is so easy to come off your wrist, a bit of a design flaw imo. If you slide your finger under the clasp on the opposite side... it completely unbuckles. Easy to be swiped off your wrist or snagged and slip off.
I've never experienced that with any flip-lock clasp.
New GMT is crazy. I want it. Would trade my new pepsi for it. And Rolex said that it is NOT for lefthanded people, but for everyone. And since when has anyone understood Rolex???
The new case thickness has been reduced by 1.5mm (from 13.1mm to 11.6mm). I think if one was never an Airking fan, they won't likely be into to this 2022 version either. I own the 116900 version, I love the asymmetry dial and that makes it special. Agreed that the curve case fits better to the wrist.. This new version will make it less OP-ish, and more Sub 40mm-ish for sure.
Your not saying Rolex saw the video and then saw the gap but I am!! They better send Dr.rolex a royalty for every air king sold
Haha, thanks man!
Look, you said it, not me. And hey, I'll settle for a free Air-King if they want!
I'm here because of the people's guy! Shout out to ELY YA HURD!
Completely agree with you on the more curved case shape and '05', but personally I don't understand the addition of the crown guards?! The watch was originally made to honour RAF pilots in the Battle of Britain, most pilots need an exposed large crown with ease of use...
Hmmm, yeah that's a good point.
@@DrRolexPhD Thanks! It's funny, they should have kept the GMT as a right hander as once set most people are just going to use the bezel, and the left hand people I know prefer a right handed watch as the bigger watch crowns would otherwise dig into the back of their hand, it would have made more sense making a left hand (pilots) Air King with a larger crown.
It has a sub 12mm thick case.
Rolex doesn’t admit mistakes but sometimes they fix them. The same “fix” happened when they updated to the Explorer mark2😎.
You’re right about the Sprite GMT-it’s for the 1% (very connected customers who are only buying it as an investment piece)!
Haha, true!
the new airking is a big leap ahead from all perspectives. saying that the extra zero before the 5 is confusing is quite ridiculous. the reason why it wasn't there in the first place is because the bloodhound project instrumentation did not have one. but that project is dead, so Rolex just moved on. personally I would have done something more radical like give it a ceramic bezel.. but maybe that's asking too much.
ID gy was the first one bud
No way José
@@DrRolexPhD 2 years first. "Why Is The Rolex Air-King An Unsung Hero?" 4 minute mark
I saw your video on the 05 and agree on everything you said, but now that Rolex actaully change the 5 to 05…I dont like it at all esply with the lumed 369. The dial is now overcrowded with white numbers.
Fair enough.
I like it, but hey, to each is own.
Don't care for the 3-6-9...prefer 15-30-45...otherwise nice timepiece.
Love thay point about the glove on the right hand. I've thought about that too ... andni don't think i could catch a ball with rt hand either. Lol
Right?! Not gonna happen.
I don’t wear a watch but I found the presentation of this video excellent. Love it! Damn!
Also I’m always late.
The left-handed Rolex is more of a collectable item, interesting that they swapped it, than it is a product for lefties for my opinion
Yeah but the beauty of Rolex is beauty, collectibility, AND functionality. I see the beauty, I see the collectibility, but I just don't see the functionality.
I remember that video prop’s to you 😂
Thanks man!
I don't actually think I influenced Rolex, but like I said, I'm not ruling it out!
I love the new Air King, but unfortunately I don’t think I have the wrist for it. Something about a watch that big, without a rotating bezel, just doesn’t work. The new Explorer 124273 is perfect on my 6.5 inch wrist, whereas the 39mm version, proportionately, was a bit awkward. Thanks for your perspective Doc!
My pleasure! I agree with you, a bezel-less watch is perfect at 36mm, and I much prefer the Explorer for that reason too.
@@DrRolexPhD I think the Air King would look good on your bigger wrist. It’s all about proportion. I have a DJ41 Wimbledon that I love but sometimes it just looks wrong on my skinny wrist. Same for the Explorer 39 I tried a few years ago. Now the new Pepsi and Batman? Perfection! The bezel makes all the difference.
You had it spot on!! Keep up the good work Marc!
Thanks Danny!
Still the weakest sports Rolex in my eyes. The gold crown next to the green is jarring and the Air King font looks odd
It's confirmed no faraday cage. Agree on the case. Looks off with crown guards especially since the watch has a smooth fixed bezel. Prefer the old case shape. Did make it much thinner...now 11.6mm vs 13.1 of old model.
Oh nice! Good move on their part
No Faraday cage? Too bad...
I still prefer old version.
369 older version white gold looks more luxury.
@@kjlaw8104 100% agree. I have the old version and love it. Call ma crazy but I also like the thickness. Adds to the masculinity of the watch. And the old case shape is more suiting, classy and elegant. I may be bias though.
interesting . hey. OSIN , gives you a 'good job' on his newest vid. the '05'. looks better. ~. JDS/CT
I think it’s a normal criticism shared by many. I didn’t see your video but I saw that issue with the 5 as making the watch look unbalanced.
Yeah exactly, I think I added to the general awareness of the issue (I don't actually think I influenced Rolex)
I find it weird they didn't discontinue the Green Op dial as well... especially with the new green bezel GMT & the Dj with the mint green dial they've released... I wonder what that will do to the price of green Op on the secondary market?
Yeah that is weird. Maybe because green is "their color" and the others were just too out-there. But idk.
Nice video! That crazy Airking has been controversial since it’s inception. Of the 2, I prefer the new one also.
Thank you!
Hell yeah. I'm actually kinda into it.
You were first! You never know who "they" watch.
Haha, yeah somehow I doubt it. But you never know!
hey man, are you ok? you haven't posted for months now!
Also there is a flow to the numerals around the dial now instead of those un-lumed 369 breaking up the visuals and sometimes making the watch illegible. Does it look better now that it’s been released from its Farraday Cage? Yes. Do I want one? Not really. I wish they had not stuck with their guns on what was the dog of the collection dial wise. But whatever. Great episode as always. Good analogy catching the baseball. Another utterly baffling move that watch.
Thanks Michael!
Yeah I kinda wish they abandoned the bloodhound dial, it's never been a smashing success.
Great stuff Mark, lets get your thoughts on the other releases too. For example remember when we discussed the WG DD olive? If I am a WG DD owner I am confused as now the PT DDs look exactly the same, I guess buy the WGs at retail but no way pay grey for them if you can get PT at retail.
Thanks man!
Yeah tbt I didn't even really take a long look at the DDs, as much as I love them, they're so far out of my league that it's hard to get super excited about them.
@@DrRolexPhD not in my plans either but come on you're Doctor Rolex PhD, not Mr. Rolex, GED!
Very good video!
Thanks Eugene!
New Air King is thinner I ❤it, even asked the AD put me on the waiting list (i can but dream) 🙏
Yeah I just saw, 11.6 vs the old 13.3 or something. Pretty good!
The Air King is a fantastic now is 🔥
Agreed!
Take this one and enjoy it 😀
Haha thanks!
love this video
Thanks man!
Hey, are you still making video?
you told them to do this? Well that was a stupid idea
How so?
@@DrRolexPhD the other one was so different that was the beauty of it. Now it’s getting closer to another one of the normal line
I own the previous air king and Since you mentioned it I couldn’t un-see it lol I have to update now lol
Lol ahhh, sorry man!
Well at least you've got something to look forward too!
@@DrRolexPhD the journey to get is better then owning lmao
Rolex watches Dr. Rolex channel for sure.
I'm nota Rolex fanboy.
Rolex is a Dr. Rolex fanboy.
The curved case sucks dude. It’s too big and aesthetically undesirable. Your perspective of this old design is wrong. No one in the watch world would agree with your perspective on the old case design. The new case design is more appealing and aesthetically appealing so reevaluate your thoughts when coming to this conclusion. And you call yourself a Dr. Of watches.
The Rolex ceo is a ‘lefty’
Is he really?
