Always thought the Stones first album was the best ! Can remember kids at school bringing it to an end of term party in 1964 and everyone loving it. We were so lucky to have in that era The Beatles,Stones,Kinks,Who,et.etc
Last days of september in 64,I'm gonna turn twelve, back to school in a working class suburb near Paris,France. What a week, first kiss, first cigarette .And a guy came with a Teppaz,a portable record player. Two 45's ,the Beatles ,with their She Loves You,which I don't like and the Rolling Stones with Carol,I'm a King Bee,Walking the Dog and Can I Get a Witness. For a young boy,it's the best start in life.In real life.
Cool version with early Stones stylings. Stones were a great blues band, which of course was their roots. Learned a number of blues songs from them🎸🎼🎹🎸🎼🎹🎸🎼🎹
It's funny that back in the 60's when I was a fan we would never have classed them as a rock and roll band, they were R&B; rock and roll was completely different style.
In 1965 I was 8yrs old watching the Rolling Stones on Ed Sullivan show for the first time. I remember thinking I can’t wait to retire and go see these guys play live in Denver in 2024. Sure enough, I have tickets for the show in June! 😂😂😂
Lol. Oh, by the way, I watched them play live in a Watford cinema in October '64, shortly before they went to the States and did that famous 'Shindig' show. But in Watford I couldn't hear a note because of the mass of screaming girls in front of me.
I saw the show too. I thought charlie looked like the cartoon cave man Alley Oop and that Mick Jagger looked like a girl I knew called Clarion O'Brien.
IN 1966 I was rhythm guitarist in a band that five of us formed at college in the North of England.. We were based on the Stones with two guitars, bass, drums and a singer who played the harmonica. We came up with a version of this song which we called "Get your kicks on the A66" (the A66 is a road that runs from the East coast to the west coast across North Yorkshire and Cumbria). It always went down well with local audiences.
I’ve been on Route 66 a few times in the 1970s. It was fun! My sister and I hitchhiked across the U.S. on my 20th birthday and that’s one of the roads we took.
Talk about being in the right place at the right time. I grew up in a small town in the USA and didn't live in a major city until I went off to college in 1967.
the anthem of my youth....that and plus "Carol" ...oh we dug ol chucky-babe too...we had an ep with 4 Berry,s on it, we wore that one out !!No one knew the Chess label in those days...The first 4 Stones LPs were our whole universe, plus many others. We lived thru that era, it was exciting, the chicks were hard to get, but WE HAD THE MUSIC !!!!!

Chuck Berry's songs just brilliant. What a genius producing stuff like this in the 50's. R.I.P Chuck you enhanced my life and still do with your songs. 110963
Absolutely Damien. Chuck was amazing, and Keith (Richards) played Chuck’s guitar solos brilliantly. While the Stones covered Chuck’s “Carol” on their debut album, I’m sure you are aware while Chuck did a cover of “Route 66” he did not right this song. It was written by Bobby Troup and was a huge hit way back by Nat King Cole. I love the Stones version too.
@@markfleming4162 Ah, I did not know Chuck did not write "Route 66". I'll have to do research on it. Had a look at Nat king Cole's version in 1957 which is little bit different to the rock and roll versions!
The sound quality is really good on this cut and The Stones are playing well as a unit. Mick's vocal are straight ahead and unexaggerated which I prefer FWIW. Like many OPs here, I like the Stones early stuff.
@@mullerk2 Please listen to the Mick Taylor albums! I love the Brian-era material!! Brian had an amazing influence!! But The Rolling Stones had incredible material after Brian, too! The Rolling Stones are the greatest band because they had so many musical ideas. Definitely more than the Beatles.

They were great as well later with Taylor, but the early Stones clicked different for me
Just F***ing Awesome. So good to hear the bass so prominent in the mix. That oughta put paid to the notion that Wyman was no good and Keith Richards played bass on Stones records. Admitedly, later in their career when they would spend weeks if not months dicking around writing songs in the studio, Bill would get bored and just go home and come back the next day to discover they´d decided to record a keeper track and Keith played bass.
I know there's differing opinions but I never thought the Stones had the same cutting edge after Brian Jones. He simply added that special ingredient that was missiing later/ though they were still good/ not unlike the Hollies without Grahm Nash !!!
What a brilliant and mature version of R66. The official record pales in comparison with this Beeb's tight and powerful delivery. It has taken 60 years for Bill Wymans' exceptional skills on bass and keybords to be properly acknolwledged . Such a shame their genius leader was driven to despair by band mates unable to accommodate his extraordinary talent. Brian died of neglect. However it's only fair to say the Stones failed to survive themselves after they perpetrated the cowardly assassination of their better self. 62-69: best years ever.
Absolutely wonderful brilliant superb live real true 100% solid gold, and these were beautiful times, can you imagine the exciting, the times the girls the dancing pubs clubs nightclub's food music era ,,ahh man WHY have we let them take it away,,even Muslims wouldn't be able to resist this excitement,
These early Stones albums were the best in the genre. True masterpieces. The early Stones stuff always sounds fresh and interesting. In this respect they are very much like the earliest Elvis records. They are somehow perfect and have never been bettered. The instrumentals are fantastic too. I think that they were among the best R & B stuff ever made (Chuck Berry is due a lot of credit for his excellent song writing. I remember a very early film from the Newport Jazz Festival with a fantastic set by Chuck Berry with a wonderful performance of "Johnny Be Good"). Rather surprisingly, the Stones' early live performances were never that great. In the early days this was partly the result of screaming girls but I also saw them in about '69 at the Lyceum in London shortly after "Let it Bleed" came out. The live performance didn't live up to the expectations created by that great album. The Hyde Park concert was the same. I don't think any band has made a more consistent sequence of albums than those between the first album and "Its only Rock 'n Roll". By the way a fantastic version of "Route 66" was recorded in 1946 by the truly great Nat King Cole and is obligatory listening - a fantastic rendition. (Sorry to go on...I grew up with this music and it was a very important part of our lives.)
Always thought the Stones first album was the best ! Can remember kids at school bringing it to an end of term party in 1964 and everyone loving it. We were so lucky to have in that era The Beatles,Stones,Kinks,Who,et.etc
Totally agree with you. Bill Wyman’s bass line was epic, really drove this along.

My mother had their early 45s, all these R&B songs. They rarely play these songs on the radio, even the oldies stations.
That’s why god made Spotify.
You can hear Bill's bass playing on here ... not bad 👍😊
Usually Wyman is buried in the mix. My first “real bass” was a Framus Star bass. Back then it was all about the looks.

Route 66 was written by Bobby Troup in 1946 and was a hit for Nat King Cole that same year.
Chuck Berry recorded it for his "New Juke Box Hits" album in 1961.
