  • Hand Engraving my great grandfather's Great Western Arms, Colt Single Action Army clone, .22cal revolver with extensive gold and silver inlay as a tribute to his time as an Air Force aircraft mechanic in WW2. The gun has extensive raised and flush gold and silver inlay. It is one of a pair passed on to me from my great grandfather Harold "Lucky" Lochmann. All of the inlay was chosen based on Airforce and aircraft mechanic themes. The finish is a distressed blue to better match it's mate which will never be engraved. The photo seen in the video of Lucky in front of a 1957 Buick Royal wearing his full western rig, was taken in Las Vegas in 1957. The year he purchased the guns. I cut the .22 cal exactly 60 years later and brought the pair back to Vegas for the Firearms Engravers Guild of America show where the gun was the recipient of the GRS Tools - Artistic Uniqueness Award. Be sure and watch this one on a big screen to see all the details! You can see more of my work at www.southerncustomengraving.com or on Instagram @laynezuelke

And they say you can’t shine a turd.
No offense meant. I understand the sentimental value of the gun. But as far as fine firearms are concerned. This once was a frog turned prince at your hand.
You are a true artist. And having seen your gold inlay video for Alec Steele, I have a much more educated appreciation for the craftsmanship.
Your work is amazing. Thank you for the videos. I look forward to seeing each one.
I wish you didn’t make it look so easy.

Some of the Great Western Arms were of excellent fit and finish. The mate to this one is a .357 from a much later run and it is very well done. This .22 was poorly finished and I spent weeks just bringing it up to snuff. The early serial numbers were very hit and miss. Quality control wasn't great at that point.

My hat is off to you! This is an absolutely beautiful piece and a heartwarming story to go with it. The attention to detail is astounding. You even put work into the screws! This is the kind of love of ones craft and attention to detail that inspires other to try their hand at a vanishing skill. As someone who works in leather, I also had to smile at the mention that Lucky made the holster his Colt rests in.

Maybe you could do a video on the background, stippling?, the way you filled in the fields around the engraving looks great. Perfect little bb's... and those dog tags were a great touch. Even the way you dressed those micro welds above the tags. Much better than trying to hide them. Your grandfather would be proud.
