So in the late 80's to early 90's, MF DOOM, was part of a rap group named KMD. Which consisted of him and his brother (there was a third guy but he dipped before they signed), unfortunately his brother died in a car crash just as they were about to get big. This was of course a huge hit to DOOM, but even worse was that nobody in the industry, at least not labels and such, dared to sign DOOM after that accident. He basically felt betrayed by the music industry and took a hiatus from music, until he started showing up at small venues freestyling in his mask. He chose this mask and the villain persona as a reference to Dr. Doom from The Fantastic Four, due to Dr. Doom having a similar backstory where he was on the expedition with the F4 that gave them powers. As far as I remember Dr. Doom felt he was betrayed by F4 and the company they worked at that time, which made him become a villain. So yeah, Metal Face was very intentional and has a tragic backstory to it, I urge you to study up on it, as I am writing this from memory and I could have gotten some things messed up.
MF stands for both Metal Fingers and Metal Face. He uses Metal fingers when he is producing songs as such on the special herbs pack. He uses Metal Face when he is Rapping on albums such as MM... Food or Madvillany.
"He wears a mask just to cover the raw flesh". Originally DOOM was in a hip hop group KMD with his brother in the 90s, but his brother died in a traffic accident and DOOM had many dark years in NYC being homeless. He arose from that as MF DOOM, wearing a mask to cover his face after going through so much trauma. I think another purpose was he thought hip hop was becoming too materialistic and so the mask represents how it doesn't matter what he looks like as long as the musics good.
bro its so fire how ur dad fill in the lines when its some deep cut ass reference from his child hood thats so dope and special bro keep it up w yall i fw it
20:40 - Forgot to mention on "Bistro" that DOOM also mentioned Madlib's aliases Yesterday's New Quintet & Quasimoto 57:22 - Wildchild was a co-member of Madlib's group from his early years Lootpack, Madlib did most of his rapping apart from Quasimodo in that group 1:09:59 - Madlib was producing this song as YNQ, which is mainly Madlib playing as 5 jazz artists that covered "How Can You Believe" by Stevie Wonder HAPPY BIRTHDAY RON🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for the info, I always assumed YNQ meant Madlib, MF DOOM, Quasimoto, King Gedora, and Victor Vaughn. Now I've got some more Madlib to listen to :)
A few things…. 1.) Happy belated birthday. 2.) instant sub. 😎 3.) I dig your pops insights. I’ve listened to this album hundreds of times always trying to find something new. But the point your pops made about not focusing too much on the lyrics but listen to the beats and the individual parts, wow 🤯 Good shit bruv.
My father did the same when my brother (37) and I (27) showed him (60) the album, he caught a fuck ton of references that wer his generation, and he loved it instrumentaly, lyricaly, and the structure of the album. We knew he would, but it was dope to see his take on it all, plus he's a gorillaz fan, so he knew doom from "November Has Come"
All the names DOOM mentions on Bistro are alter egos of him and Madlib (other than the two cats at the laundromat) Fancy Clown is brilliant because it’s featuring Viktor Vaughn, which is the alter ego of DOOM that’s his younger self, and Viktor is rhyming about his girl being with some “fancy clown” that wears a mask all day - himself as DOOM in the future.
MF Doom is Zev Love X from the group KMD. He was first featured on 3rd Bass' Gas Face back in 1989. So technically he was out as a rapper before Wu Tang.
Also worth noting he was chummy with at least a few Wu Tang members and did a few collaborations - particularly with Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck and RZA.
I love hearing your pops take on DOOMS music because he sheds some light on context in the song I’ve missed in the past. Been a DOOM fan for over 7-8 years and I still learn and catch new stuff.
this the type of music i like to skate to or work on homework with its just some good music to put me in a mood. also feels like i could be transported into this record with its very cool sounds
DOOM being born in England was basically an accident his mother was visiting family there when she had him, because he was born in England he got automatic English citizenship and he never bothered to get US citizenship which would eventually come back to haunt him as he would eventually be denied entry to the USA and be forced to live in England, he is in reality from NYC he had absolutely no memory of his time in England so was completely influenced by growing up in NYC The MF DOOM persona comes from his experience as part of kmd and his love of comics, in the late 80's early 90's DOOM was a part of kmd with his brother sub rock and another guy, they had a fairly successful first album getting played on mtv and selling decent numbers, while making their second album sub rock was killed in an accident crossing a road shortly after their record lable dropped them feeling like their second album was too controversial this caused DOOM to have a major dislike of major labels combine that with a love for comic books and you get MF DOOM the supervillian here to destroy the rap game DOOM'S career started before wu tang formed i belive the earliest appearance of DOOM was in 1989 back then know as zev love x he was featured on the 3rd bass song the gas face, if you wanna see a super young maskless DOOM give the video for the song a watch it's on RUclips pretty good song too
He became MFDOOM after his brother died. Just like Doom from the comics the mask came to be a much more ell known and "darker" version of the man that once was
The laundromat was in the song bistro because DOOM lost a bet with someone and he had to put a few words in a song somewhere on the album. It ended up being the word laundromat. There is more to this but this is what i remember.
The old dude is right. DOOM has mad flow but it distracts you from the song itself. You either pay attention to the beat, or DOOM. After a listen or two you get the whole experience. That is why DOOM is so good. He really makes you listen to the music. He wants you to recognize the samples and be like "AYY I LOVED THAT SHIT FROM BACK THEN". DOOM was apparently an old head and didn't really enjoy rap music. He just used it as a means to make money. Yet you can tell there is a passion behind his work. A true artist. Fuck why is he gone..
I'm pretty sure DOOM was always his nickname. Comes from Dumile. Pronounced "Doo-mih-lay" if that makes any sense. But yeah, the mask came first I think. It was part of his persona. The super villain coming for revenge on the industry that dropped him when his brother got killed. He's coming with bars to murder these weak emcees too. He's just a villain with a metal mask. So it made sense to add Metal Face to DOOM. Then shorten it to MF DOOM for the play on words.
You two are perfect for reaction videos! Y'all seem like wicked good dudes. I've subbed after discovering your channel via this video, and I'll be watching your 'MM.. FOOD' review as well (my fave DOOM album)! EDIT- Happy Belated Birthday, dude!
Wildchild was in a group with Madlib called Lootpack in the late 90s, along with DJ Romes. They have one creative dope album called DA soundpeices I think. MED's solo work is great as well. He had a album with all Madlib production called Bad Neighbor in 2015, which featured Doom. His first album had just blaze, Madlib, and J Dilla production. Worth checking out.
After hearing how DOOM died, I'm sad. They didn't attend to him and he died. He was sick, yes, but it could've been easily avoided if they did routine checks as per usual. They also didn't come when he rang. So bad. Some hospital in Leeds, UK I think. Why not London? Thought he was here. Sucks man. Hated how the US never allowed him back in.
Frank Zappa testified before the PRMC Senate in protest of censorship in music back in like the 70s or something. My dad loved him so I heard a lot of his shit growing up, your dad should def check him out! Edit: it was in 1985 lol
Meatgrinder is one of those songs that is super fucking dense but at the same time it goes by so fast that if you aren't paying attention it's "Just another song" When in reality it is WAY more than "just another song."
"he could probably make a whole instrumental album" madlib was the main producer and made a (basically) fully instrumental album entirely of jazz. Its noice.
Fun fact we almost got an album from the super group madvillanz (with a Z) the members of this super group consisting mf doom, madlib,Kanye west (the Z comes from yeezy) . Kanye was in another super group called child rebel soldier which was Kanye lupe fiasco and Pharrell
Look at pops. I love this for y’all. Subscribed 💰💰 Shake Pop hand for me. Awesome reaction, insight and clarity on one of the best album ever. It’s up there with illmatic. MF DOOM effortlessly played around on Madlib Production. Rest in rap Villain
Love both of your energy, I subscribed and I'll definitely check out more of your videos, but if you have botched audio like that in a video about music you need to address it somehow. Either mirror the right audio channel to the left or at least put a disclaimer in your video. I first thought my headphones were fucked :D
I wonder if your pops would enjoy Pinata by Freddie Gibbs, that album is insane if neither of you have heard it before. Danny Brown also has a feature on there that is nuts, and Madlib did all of the production if memory serves me right,

This is pretty on point summary of first memory.
The DOOM character was also originally already planned when Subroc was still alive before KMD disbanded
MF Grimm past on the MF moniker, DOOM had the doom nickname forever as a short for Dumille
there were 2 third members of kmd, it was originally rodan but he dipped and onyx joined
I knew it was based on Dr. Doom but never knew the full backstory appreciate this comment!
RIP to the SUPERVILLAIN 🙏🏼
He encouraged adult swim so much. I did not realize at first how many show tracks and bumps he did for them.
Get the "soundfixer" extention ;)
All CAPS!!!!!!!!!
❤
Its really fitting how he died on Halloween.

thought it meant "Mothaf*ckin"
it also stands for Manhattans Finest

Aye happy birthday Rod! this is absolutely one of my personal favorite records, glad to see your dad enjoying it.

this the type of music i like to skate to or work on homework with its just some good music to put me in a mood. also feels like i could be transported into this record with its very cool sounds

One of my favorite albums of all-time, rip to the VILLIAN, also Happy Birthday
Your dad a real one for saying hardcore hustle was too short, that's gotta be one of my favorite tracks that I wish was longer
He became MFDOOM after his brother died. Just like Doom from the comics the mask came to be a much more ell known and "darker" version of the man that once was
coincidentally Doom in the comics became who he is due to he wanting to save his mother's soul a personal tragedy too
the illest been waiting for this one 🔥

The mask came after MF DOOM. It’s the Gladiator(2000) mask. And DOOM first released villain style music in 1999.
Apologies if I’m late but happy bday Rod! Hope it was a good one man thanks for the content as always, be safe y’all :)
Also still waiting for the currents reaction 😌 I can feel it happening soon
