Aesop Rock's "Labor Days" is also an incredible LP, from the era of Indie Rap. If you like instrumentals, Gasoline's "A Journey Into Abstract Hip-Hop" is pure fire.
When you think DOOM isn't staying on point with topics and schemes, check Rap Genius while you listen. The man is untouchable. The best emcee with no chain ya ever heard.
I was in Jr High in 1990 when KMD dropped Peach Fuzz. It was my theme song. Been rocking ever since. The other day, I heard MF DOOM on my 17 yr old daughter's playlist. I almost shed a tear as a Proud Dad. I love that your Dad is feeling this album. This is dope. Shout out to your Pops.
in re: to "Deep Fried Frenz"... after his brother died, DOOM roamed the street for a bit and was basically homeless (essentially his villain origin story). So I'm pretty sure he knew who his real friends were after that & was wary of everyone else. Mr. Daniel Dumile was a genius in his craft. Never met him or got go to any of his shows but I miss DOOM. Hip hop misses dude
I first got exposed to MF Doom thanks to an episode of the Boondocks. I don't remember which one, I just remember a bank robbery taking place and "Strange Ways" playing also "All Caps" playing during Huey's fight against the Jim Kelly parody
Your father is rad! Many reviews of rap songs/albums I feel like peeps don’t know rap or aren’t rap fans. Your father catches a lot that I think many people don’t, even stuff I missed! Very cool!
Man, I love how your pops already knows the DOOM vibes. How his persona reflects that “comic book” feel but understands how smart of a rapper he is and that it’s designed that way
Damn this is a really good review, you're both well versed in music and your dad caught ALOT more than any other channel on youtube. I'd love to watch another hour of you reacting to MF DOOMs collab with madlib, Madvillainy. Keep it up lads!
Once dad started singing along to Anita Baker, I knew it was a rap. Nah mean. She produced her own stuff as well, so I think she was a big influence on Dumile.
Resident DOOM stan here. I’ve been rapping and writing for a while now, DOOM changed EVERYTHING for me. How I wrote bars, songs and even viewed rap as a whole. Love the reaction so far but you should’ve kinda told your dad what to expect and look for. Like the rhyming, the syllables and schemes he’s putting together is one of the main reasons he’s held so high and he’s changed a lot of people process. I can break down a lotta bars in here, not all of em because some still going over my head.
HA! Yeah, it's so funny how years later I heard a line and say "AWWWWW SHIT!!! That's what he meant!!!" lol He's the best. #1 MC of all time. STrong statement, but I'm sticking to it, forever. FOREVER!
He’s arguably one of the mostly complex rhymers in hip hop all time. My #1 issue with DOOM though is his vocal audio is too quiet in relation to the beat.
He was highly on point... the best thing you can do is google the lyrics and read them... you'll see just how much sensea they make and witness how skilled he was!
Ohhhh I didn't know about that Friends and Strangers sample until your Dad brought it up! Went and looked up the song just now. Good stuff man. And the title makes so much sense in the context of the track!
It's funny he mentions Wu-Tang because MF DOOM collabed with I think all the members in some way, except ODB, of course. Technically they all appear on a DOOM beat (without DOOM) on 9 Milli Bros from Fishscale, too. He even did whole albums with CZARFACE which has Inspectah Deck in it. Songs with Ghostface Killah. He might've been the first of them to notice him and reach out. RZA too maybe?
Deep Fried Frenz is the perfect combination of technical hip-hop and a popular song, if other technical rappers would use catchy quality samples like this, we might be able to hear more technical rap everywhere ( or am I just dreaming ? )
You favorite rappers favorite rapper. He wore a mask because he wanted you to focus on the music and not his appearance. The albums premise is about food of course but at the same time its about finally getting some good music to listen to. Food for the soul.
Aesop Rock's "Labor Days" is also an incredible LP, from the era of Indie Rap. And you must have heard Madvillainy right? If you like instrumentals, Gasoline's "A Journey Into Abstract Hip-Hop" is pure fire.
Angelika's line on Guinnesses is my favourite one. "Flower essence: Penstemon Gentlemen, my favorite shit, so I've never forsaken it I persevere, make it fit." 😂
The sample from one beer is cortex and that french band is dope as fuuuuck. Also what is the wiz track that has the cortex sample? Im sure i can google it
GOATED project hope to see more MF Doom in the future this album helped me explore the underground scene more than ever i have this album to thank for that and it’s very unorthodox as well✍🏽🎯💯
So glad you covered this album, it's one of my favourites that I discovered last year. My favourite track is Vomit Spit - unpleasant title, awesome beat!
The problem with doing this type of reaction video to something like DOOM’s art is that it is so dense and complex that it takes many multiple listenings to decipher. Edit: I spoke too soon. You analyzed Poo Putt Platter intricately. 😂
MF= ‘Metal Face’ while DOOM was on microphone duty & ‘Metal Fingers’ when he was on production duty, but he actually got the M’F’ ttle from his longtime & very close friend ‘MF Grimm’ who unfortunately had a beef with each other throughout the 1st few years of the ‘00s, which they eventually squashed, but they never got close to being the rhyming partners, never mind the very tight friends that they were throughout all of the ‘90s. Empress Stahhr or Angelika is really dope, I've listened to some of her solo stuff just because she really impressed me the couple of times she was featured on DOOM's projects, she's probably got my favorite voice and flow of any female rapper.

FOR REAL. The guy's been my #1 rapper of all time since I heard him in '99. I don't think anyone can knock the man off his throne.
Yep, solid writer.
