The New World Situation is a Disaster

  • Amazon teased an announcement for months about the future of New World, building up hype until the Game Awards.
The ensuing announcement has resulted in review bombing and general frustration beyond just the announcement but more so about how frustrating their communication has been...and well...the fact that they now call their MMO an Action RPG.

They knew what they were doing. It was all testing and prep for a console release. This is their 1.0 release. That’s why they focus on the early game so much when people begged for end game content. Once it hits console they might start on end game content since that’s all that’s left at that point, but far too late for their current player base at that point.

My thoughts is because MMO for console players could be considered World of Warcraft. Alot of young console players could be thought of as those who play Fortnite or call of duty and so perhaps calling it an ARPG sounds like the Witcher or dragon age. So to them it could sound cooler than saying MMO. I don't believe they are getting rid of any aspects of the game. Though anyway anyone could be right or wrong at this stage.

Let PC players wait for 6+ months while constantly hyping up their big announcement in June, only for it to be basically just a console port and some minor content that won't last longer than a week or two. All of that while trying to rebrand and repackage the same lackluster game riddled with bugs to unsuspecting console players for a quick cashgrab and showing a middlefinger to the PC community. Perfect case study on how to run an MMO with a great foundation into the dirt.

Old player here, They kind of did us super dirty. I felt so backstabbed every time they spoke, I lowkey lost over 300K+ gold because of their stupid updates that made ZERO sense! On top of killing off my entire server and having delays on delays on the "merge". And killing off the server they had use merge too, And offering a "Transfer" that NEVER came and I was left for dead with over 600 hours spent and every piece of progression I've done undermined and all motivation killed. Anyways to get to the point I feel like them charging 30$ for content is WILD, the game is less than that on a sale $15.99 I checked. So they're asking TWICE the box price for an expansion that is only going to spilt the player base because not everyone going to want to pay for that. Kind of wanted to get back into it but saw the 30$ and left a sour taste in my mouth and said NAH, rather go to a game that doesn't suffer from an monthly crisis.

Sounds design was the first thing i noticed when I played New world. It was SO good, the echoing of trees, players mining ore. Top notch, I do not understand how the sound design team is so far ahead of everything else in the game. The icing on the cake, why I will not go back after about 3k hrs is the healing. Healing flat out not fun. Then in this "action combat" system people are forced to stand in a circle for heals. IDK why that alone made it past alpha. You are not wrong. I have 6042 hours played in NW since launch but I haven't played in the last two months because nearly everyone I know and played with, stopped playing. AGS has consistently mismanaged communication and information. They claim that the vocal dissatisfaction is just part of a very vocal minority and that the majority of players are getting what they want from the New World DEVs in regards to fixes/features. However, the attrition numbers say otherwise. This game is beautifully rendered and has a lot of great content for a few hundred hours. After that, there is little to do except what I did: farm expeditions on muscle memory, do endless OPRs on the one and only map they have had since day 1, login for war after war after war, and ignore the horrible way the devs have tried to balance weapons/abilities while introducing new bugs with each patch and still having old bugs that have been around since 2021. Such a shame...

I would set up bot traps and they would run into my tent and couldn't get by for a while. Sometimes there were bots that had actual people behind them and they would camp the nodes and not let anyone else come and get them. I don't like PVP and I was sick of having to fight actual people to get any of the mats. That was really tough. It made it really hard to get enough materials to increase a craft. The story was completely lacking. The world is amazing. So gorgeous and the houses and furniture are incredible. It was what I liked the most. So many let downs with this game.
The console launch won't be as big or good as they are hoping for.
They are really more focused on LOTR and just appeasing PC players and adding console.
They are 2 years too late for reviving this game with crossplay, controller support, etc.
I've moved on to other games like many others have.
They don't give 2 hoots about us legacy founding players.
It's all about profit margins coming from new players, but it won't last, all new players become old players who get tired of the same BS.

They're suffering the same sort of issues other companies face when they're contracted out by a larger firm. There was an update a good while back that had the devs visibly frustrated at the way things were going - having their own work held back or revised. Embracer is a good group and the game has a good framework. Sure it is not necessarily great for PVP leaderboard players, who have really short game loyalty on any platform. Any. But the overall dynamic is a good one. However they still have to follow whatever AGS is telling them.
What really gets me is the number of "content" streamers who've jumped on the bandwagon and are hammering away at it, because doing THAT is popular now. You're not savvy.

Wake up call: Amazon is many things, but one of them is not stupid. They will not continue to throw bad money after good. I suspect it will be like umbral shards and down the road they'll do crafting updates for the jump to 800 GS gear. So basically the new 10 man raid will be a way to get the new umbral shards.

When I saw the paid DLC for mounts, I knew the game was doomed and it would be a waste of money. I was right. Who in their right mind would make people pay for mounts in an open world mmorpg????

Is it an MMO if there's only 150 hours on content? Or is it a sort of once and done action RPG?
I put 260ish hours in Black Desert and Lost Ark basically as baby's first step in the water... Just enough to get an idea of how they work and then stopped playing them for various reason. I put 1300ish hours into ESO but now there isn't really enough to keep me interested and I'm not really that interested in mastering the combat. Everyone says they really liked New World but they only last around a month and then put it down.

It’s a dead game. Just give up and stop playing it. The Only option is to turn this into a downloadable ARPG and close down the mmo servers. They’ve lost 99.9% of their players. The .1% are all that’s left. Calling it an mmo hurts the game. Calling it an ARPG makes it seem like it’s not dead.

  • @jordangoodoien2863
    @jordangoodoien2863 Месяц назад

IMO. This comes down to the perceived cost structures of those classifications. MMORPGs are often associated with either a mandatory or highly pushed subscription model. An ARPG usually has no extra cost or only an optional season pass. I’m sure they don’t want to turn away potential customers on the basis that their classification may include extra costs.

bro, no mater what you called it, its not a MMO because it is not MASSIVE multiplayer online, it is actually a Action RPG. They never get fix the big fighting system, ive got 3k+ hours in game, they never fix the problems. And when the servers start to collide (because of no ppl playing the game) they had the excellent idea of launching a PTW DLC, losing the rest of the ppl. They are just milking the game. The same will happend with ashes o creation, because its the same metodology. Also NA ppl need to stop saying "oh, i get 200 hours of content, so its ok to pay a PTW DLC, they need money" please stop simping big firms.

The whole premise of the game originally was to create Clans and overtake each section of the lands. If they are trying to do that without claiming its an MMO, then I would have to agree that they are just pretty much moving on from that aspect. My friends and I have over 800 hours in the game and ultimately stopped because the amount of bots that would stay near the higher level fishing spots, wood, etc and it would be designed to just go from point a to b and constantly collect it. Then it would sell the stuff to the point no one would ever make money on the trading posts. They had no control over that.

  • @SomeGuyFromUtah

I don't have any real problems with this announcement. I still think there's some massive problems with certain decisions for this game, but not these announcements.
IMO the goal here is capture a new MMO crowd with New World... teens and young 20's first MMO, now on console... I think there's a negative connotation with MMO for some players because MMO = massive time sink. IMO they are trying to capture a mini-FFXIV ARR moment with this re-release. I think very few players have really played through the revamped story and I think it's better than most people realize... and to be fair, the game does play like a 3rd person ARPG.
My actual problem with the game has to do with a progression item, Chromatic Seals, being locked behind gold. Many important gear upgrades require this item, but you can only buy one a day and they cost 5000g each, plus faction tokens (but the faction tokens can be aquired pretty easily IMO).
Last time I was playing my gold supply was slowly diminishing because even though I played a ton I wouldn't passively make enough gold to cover the cost of these seals. It would take an hour or two of my time dedicated just for gold generation to afford the seals, and that's just not how I wanted to spend my time in game. Most people I knew who wanted to play competitively (territory control etc.) would just RMT.
Maybe making gold has been made easier, but that's not really my point... these seals were an important part of upgrading gear, and there's already a daily throttle built into them. Doubling down and making it also into a gold sink is really bad design. Gold sinks and other progression bottlenecks should not be tied to each other for something that's needed pretty often. I don't have a problem with the gold cost or the time limit of another item, Azoth Inductors, I think they are called because an Azoth inductor literally allowed you to make one perfect (3 perk) piece of gear every week... So a 1 week cooldown and a 25k cost does make sense, but I never even got to consider buying these because I never had enough to buy both the Chromatic Seals and the Azoth Inductors.
Anyway.. my actual hope for New World, and the only reason I might play it again, is that my son lives in Germany and we play video games together about once a week...he's on Xbox and I'm on PC. If I can get him interested in a game like this it would be a lot more fun than playing Rocket League for 6 hours (for me at least).... However, I only give him like a 30% chance that he'll actually like the game enough to want to play it much.

I got over 2200 hours in the game, but went on hiatus a few months after Angry Earth expansion was released. Then when this "big" announcement came and went, my heart sank even further. For shits and giggles, last night I logged back on to New World (I hadn't uninstalled it yet, while still keeping up with the steam updates it was given over the last few months.) My 4 characters are still in the same exact position/location I had left them earlier in the year. I decided to run 2 faction missions last night in Elysian WIlds and nothing has been changed. The same feeling came back quickly which caused me to take a hiatus earlier in the year. After 20 minutes, I logged back off. It's just repetitive fluff with no meaningful rewards, especially if you are already geared out for the specs you like to play. Biggest complaints still hold for me: There is no meaningful Endgame that has much replayability, especially after you are geared out. No multi-boss big raids (though, seems like a 10-man raid is coming with multiple bosses.) Doing the 3-5 man expeditions/dungeons over and over becomes boring, doing chest runs becomes boring, running faction and town missions becomes boring, and gathering/refining/crafting becomes boring and quite frankly has become useless too. Also, the limited number of types of mobs in the game is disappointing. And when they do introduce a "new" type of mob, it's just a reskin of an existing mob. As for PVP, I can't comment on that in New World. I like to PVP in other games but not in New World. Tried it once and hated it. Still going to keep it installed on my PC until October 15 when the new game update/relaunch occurs to check it out. But I don't think nothing major is going to change, especially for us PC gamers.

New World on PC was only dying because they let it die. A lot of players gave AGS the benefit of the doubt and their trust that they would eventually get stuff fixed and add things we could use in the game (more than one OPR map, barbershop, etc.) and the players got burned. The same thing could happen after console launch with the same people making the same decisions on what players really need. Thumbs up for the video.

I quit playing last December because the writing was on the wall that PC players were going to get to spend the next year being beta testers for the console release. First controller support and most recently reworked combat, which has left the current state of the game a complete buggy mess. AGS gave everyone hope by saying there would be a big announcement in June that everyone would love. However, the big announcement was just more crap about console release and the weird shift to being an ARPG. I've put thousands of hours into New World and I used to think it'd be a game I'd be playing for the next 5-10 years, but now I wonder if I'll ever even play it again.

I don't get all the hate tbh. There is really a lot one can do in this game. I don't care about the genre name at all. Most people do play solo or with a small squad of friends anyway.
The mmo era died long time ago. Heck, even in wow people are solo players mainly and wow has the biggest player count.
Call it a barbie survival game, and rpg, and mmo... who really cares.
Releasing it on console is no problem for a pc player.
Ps: I a super pessimistic person, but if I recall everything I've done in new world, I had a blast randomly roaming around, collecting stuff, crafting, doing music in cities with randoms, ambushing people in the wild.
The world is phantastic and NOT hollow or soulless, you can do a lot of things.

The anger comes from the game reinventing itself marketing wise for a 2nd time. First it was a Survival pvp game, then it was an MMO, now its an Action RPG. Its a marketing issue more than anything else and PC players, the few that remain, feeling cast aside after being told "wait for an announcement" for months.

So get it on some sale if you really want to check it out, but do expect a lot of bugs even those for main story and don't expect them to be fixed (I have quests that I cannot finish even 10 months after reporting it). OK, so I’m gonna give my perspective on this.
My gaming laptop died back in October 2020 instead of going with another PC. I decided to get a PlayStation five. And I am happy at that choice with the exception of one thing. The lack of cross platform, MMORPGs, most of my friends that I played MMO‘s with are on PC. I tried Final Fantasy 14. I didn’t really care for it because it was so single player driven with the story with many of the instances for hours of gameplay not being able to actually enjoy it with friends.
I have a couple of friends that have played New world on and off. I’ve heard the good and the bad about the game. But I am anticipating this release as a PlayStation five player. I will be trying it out for the first time and hope I like the game.
Over the last several years, I have really enjoyed a lot of the single player titles and I did a little bit of Diablo with one of my friends. But this is huge news to me. None of my old MMO friends are interested in DC universe online, which would be another option , and I said I would play that
But like I said, this gives me the opportunity to play with my friends
I did actually pick up a new gaming laptop this year, but I just enjoy my PlayStation, I enjoy being able to kick back and played on the screen and would rather game on it on all honesty.
Anyway, that’s just my perspective. I understand the benefits of PC a lot of times, but I also understand the relaxed benefit nature of the PlayStation.
From what I hear also one of the reason they’re doing this is their new Lord of the rings online MMO that they are producing is supposed to be cross platform and this is a way for them to set up their controls.
    Anyway, I’m excited personally

Oh yeah it's not an issue with it being in console. It's about them promising content for half a year, not delivering that content, then the announcement that was teased for pc players is thst the game has been rebranded and recategorized to appeal to console players. Other mmos have gone to console before and it's been well received because it brings in new players. This was a masterclass in how *not* to do a console launch from the bad communication to the bad rebranding.

I think the Devs realized in trying to create Rise of Angry Earth that the lumberjack engine just isn’t going to cut it when it comes to making content. So this is their way of saying, this game is never going to be a strong MMO. So let’s cut our losses and take what we have to the console market as a coop or solo action RPG. With the console market we can meet and possibly exceed those expectations. But for PC, this is now an open world RPG, with some PvP and group content.
