The Vicar featured a lot in the show and was important in contributing to the overall atmosphere. Williams played the part really well but as his character didn't get the funny lines it seems to me his contribution was underrated.
One of my favourites. I had taped many episodes, just the audio, in the 70's and knew this one so well, I wrote it down from memory when bored on a hot holiday. Those were the days...
😊Even for those who haven't!!My family have been defending England since the Viking attacks and the Battle of Hastings. Both my great grandfathers served in WW1 and in the Home Guard,my great grandma served alongside Princess Elizabeth,my 1st husband was a Vietnam war conscriptionee, suffered PTSD and suicided after our daughter was stillborn😢I've recently retired from Medicins Sans Frontiers(Doctors Without Borders)suffering PTSD.The things we see in war zones will haunt us forever😮
They always seem to get their vehicles right - at first sight that van of Hodges seemed a little bit too modern for the times, but it was in fact first registered in October 1939. It is still in use today.
😂"The vicar says it's okay to have a lot of men in his garden as long as we don't do anything improper!!He's not used to having a lot of men in his garden."The looks on some of the guys faces were priceless😂The vicar was sooo gay.😊
Capt. Mainwaring could not resist the joke 7:30. For those not familiar with British WW2 history, the Air Raid Precautions (A.R.P) wardens were a domestic force whose sole responsibility was to guide the population in the event of a German air raid. They were also charged with making sure that not a speckle of light was visible in the nights, that might have unwittingly guided bombers towards targets. This explains the paranoid reaction of the Warden, Mr. Hodges.

TheVargevass the actor playing lance corporal Jones was actually on in his early fifties as he was born in 1920. John Laurie the actor portraying Frasier was a year younger then Arnold Ridley who portrayed Godfrey, and he was energetic. Arnold Ridley was not as energetic only due to wounds he suffered in his youth in the first world war. They were all great in this show.
Funny stuff even still today. It is a shame all these people have passed on Pike was the last one to a go a few years ago. All were lovable characters.

that is a 1970s garden - growing of such abundant flowers and ornamental shrubs would not have been possible, as all available land had to be given over to growing crops.

There is a film on making Dad's Army and Lowe was notorious for not learning his lines e.g. he never took a script home so many of his pauses/mistakes were quite genuine.
Even if one were to be produced it would be a cynical comedy about fighting the war, it wouldn't be an honest view of old men veterans of 14-18 defending their homes
Consider the significance of the events of this episode. If I remember correctly, this is the first time members of the platoon came under direct fire of the enemy (as opposed to bombs) - and I think the third time they took prisoners? So -- well done, men!
@@jordanhicks5131 I wonder why Capt. Mainwairing frequently sneers at Hodges for being a greengrocer but doesn't look down on Jones for being a butcher.

Frank Williams the Vicar passed away today. Ian Lavendar is the last member of the Dad's Army cast who is still alive. 27th June 2022.
Ian Lavender recently passed away. They're all gone now. 😢😢

This series had the perfect cast for each part . Mr. Blewitt is one of my favorites.
It's either the hedgehogs or us. A brilliant line.
I'm backing the hedgehog cause.

Jonesy's butcher van is SOOO nice.
I like this one I thought the garden is very pretty
Still watching 2024 so funny rip too them ❤❤❤❤
"It does seem a little odd, three grown men going out camping". Lol
Pike was really the hero in this episode. The tent as a cape, trying to clean his hands on mr. Mainwaring and then the bow. Not so stupid now.
👍 Capt. 'If anything I cant stand is a sulking Nazi' 😂 Pike, always ready to shoot Hodges 😂💖

Action Jones! agreeable Wilson, sceptical coveting Frazer 😂
'' why dont you shoot him mr mannering, you have every right!'' i love that line
Pity the picture is stretched and only 360p. I feel I must ask why?
Because it matches the film time stamp of 360s per minute. This was standard for settings in the 1970s

I'm amazed that Wilson didn't complain about having his brush covered in mud. Most out of character.

Where does the phrase "come in your time's up" come from?
When people used to hire/rent small boats for an hour and their time was up
Hodges doesnt know what the petrol-meter is for :D
