I often think of the moment Manwairing says "Don't worry, Godfrey. You stick with me. I'll get you home." No matter how ridiculous he is made to be, Manwairing is always willing to do the decent thing and risk his life for his men.

I think this is what separates Mainwaring from the other archetypal tragic heroes in British comedy. We love characters like Basil Fawlty, David Brent, Harold Steptoe, Mark Corrigan and Jez Usbourne, etc, but ultimately what we really love is to see them fail, deriving pleasure from seeing them get their comeuppance for their arrogance, snobbishness, laziness or selfishness. With Mainwaring there's definitely an element of that, but the crucial difference is that for all his character flaws Mainwaring, unlike those other characters, is ultimately who he presents himself to be- a fearless patriot who will gladly lay down his life for his men. As such, even though we enjoy seeing him brought down a peg or two, ultimately it's good to see him triumph- which in and of itself makes him pretty unique in British comedy history, given that most classic sitcom episodes end with the protagonist hitting rock bottom. Although I'm normally more of a fan of bleak, dark cynicism in comedy, I do think it's that genuine, unironically sweet and heartwarming element to the series that has made Dad's Army as enduring across generations as it is...
Sublimely brilliant . Indicative of a Tim gone by , never to return . I'm 62 ,going on 19 ( my children refuse to go clubbing with me ), remember watching this in the 60's and 70's , we could play outside as children , all day , no worries . I never thought in 1964 when asked about the near , distant future , that it was such a long way away , I couldn't imagine being around now . If you're interested , I'm still a Punk and aim to die as young as I can , as old as I can !!

Yes you can watch them in perfect condition with great sound here on RUclips.....if you pay for them! This is free content and the BBC are savage with their copyright so this is the only way they can do it!
Poor picture quality - fuzzy and rather zoomed in, sound quality not much better. Playback speed is wrong too, evidenced by 1. The presentation is much longer than the original half hour slot this program would have fired into and 2 the actors sound drunk and slurred unless playback speed is increased to 1.25x. Not recommended.
"I can hardly see to read!"
- I love Wilson!!!

19:57 Always loved Walker's expression at this moment.
This show did subtle humour so well .
Jimmy Beck was brilliant much missed
He's the spitting image of my uncle. It's uncanny 😅
One of the best espodes ,and truly one of the best sitcoms ,thank god its still shown, the crap comedys now are dreadful.
"Mr Mainwaring you're our inspiration sir what we do without you? We wouldn't be in this bloody awful mess to start with" XD
It was a racist series.
I love the Dads army it cracks me up everytime I watch it. 😂
Guarantee that any classic comedy on RUclips and someone will be moaning that "there aren't any decent shows around now". Dad's army was great though.

Long live old British comedy.
And the sex pistols.
I'm 82, British and play in 3 rock bands in Prague - just finished a gig at an Austrian ski resort.
Probably my favourite episode
It's so Mainwaring that, even in a dangerous situation like he thought he was, he still gets irritated and impatient with the fella at the station 😂
Play at 1.25 speed
Thank you
And how to get the rest of the scree
I had a boat once. Small world!
Frazer really liked these exercise moments...
classic timeless comedy genius
Brilliant episode
One of those exciting "headless" episodes.
It was sponsored by ISIS.
which is the episode wear Mainwaring shows how to get into a boat?
put that light out- I think.
Menace from the deep

They will be walking along way looking for there rifle bolts, they are on the wrong side of the track, lol,

They're walking in the opposite direction to the way the train was
going, so they're on the correct side

Why would you upload this? The playback speed is too slow & the picture is zoomed in too far. Unwatchable.
C'est que ce la gare!!?? La Gare Eastbourne actually" XD
This is unwatchable. Running at the wrong speed and zoomed in so much half the picture is cut off.
R.i.p. pike😢
It sounds like they were on valium.
Why is it so zoomed in?
Also I have to play it at 1.25x

@@meganeloise8189 what
It would be classed as copyright if they showed the whole screen

Don’t panic!
Why bother, when half the screen is missing? You've wasted your time and, more importantly, everyone else's. I just don't understand it.
What railway Is this 28:16
Mid hants railway I believe
@dustpanandthebrush5293 I really appreciate the reply thank you but I can't find this section of track anywhere, it must of been a large goods yard

If it takes 6 men 1 hour to dig a hole how long would it take 4 men to dig HALF a hole. Its kind pointless watching this headless video.

Abysmal editing 👎
