  • The longer I own my N55 powered BMW F30 335i, the more issues I find. Sure buying a cheap BMW is always a gamble, but this one is a lot worse than I expected. Today we will go over the results of the oil analysis we sent over to Black Stone to see everything that is wrong my my clapper's engine. The results are strange to say the least.

    Do the rod bearing regardless of what anyone says on any n55, specially if ur going to add a good amount of boost. my stock rod bearing slipped at 29psi and 180k miles really good for n55 but I wish I changed it first tho.

    The same exact thing happened to me. Saw flakes in the filter, sent them a sample, and they told it was all good. I drove my car down the street for some errands and the engine seized. I learned that flakes and pieces that are visible cannot be picked up by their machines. I would suggest multiple oil samples over time. This will tell you the real trend pattern.

    I recently changed my valve cover on the n55 and had the same reaction when oil leaked out. My pcv valve was bad and was making a terrible squealing noise, similar to when old cars have a serpentine belt squeal. That cover was NOT cheap, paid waaay more than I wanted to. Hopefully it will be oil free now with the functioning pcv. Please make more f30 content!

    For a bit of piece of mind, I had the exact same metal shavings in my n55 oil filter. Crapped myself when and changed the bearings and there was no wear, they all was pretty good. I still get a few shavings here and there in filter after oil change. I’m sure there aluminium shavings, dunno where there coming from. If they where hard metal I’d think eccentric shaft. I read a few others with same situations as me. But there’s only one way to find out……….

  • @3007Doug

    Spectrometric oil analysis (SOAP) is an invaluable tool in diagnosing and predicting failure of jet and turbofan engine components. The reason for this is that the major assemblies and components of jet and turbofan engines are coated with very specific metals and wear of those metals can predict failure of a system or group of systems. Comparatively, there is exponentially more friction in an internal combustion engine than in the aforementioned jets and turbofans and the various components of an internal combustion engine ARE NOT coated. Don't waste your money on SOAP for a car engine or any other reciprocating engine because the reliability of testing just isn't there yet.

      I sent a sample into Blackstone on an engine (13B-MSP rotary) I knew had low compression and I did not tell blackstone, and the report came back basically telling me that the engine was a goner. I am not saying they are 100% but I think they are valuable.

  • @drivejapan6293
    @drivejapan6293 2 года назад +2

    I would recommend starting the engine before draining and collecting an oil sample to give it a stir metaphorically speaking. A lot of contaminants will settle out and depending on how long it sat and how you collect your sample, it may not be accurate. The fact your valve cover didn't look like it had a layer of peanut butter on it shows that any water in your oil was very minuscule or introduced after it sat and metal will settle out reasonably quickly, not to mention that is why you have a filter. I am not saying there could not have been an error in the results but it unlikely.

    Seeing that it's a 2013, that means it's a PWG N55 thus a smaller turbo and weaker rod bearings and rods. The PWG N55s are far more prone to spun rod bearings. The 2014+ EWG N55s have the S55 rod bearings and S55 forged rods along with a bigger turbo. The N55 in the M2 and M235 also have forged cranks vs the standard cast crank. Spun rod bearings in the EWG N55s are pretty rare compared to the PWG N55s.
    If you have big power goals for this N55, definitely do the rod bearings.

      All N55's (all factory BMW turbocharged engines actually) have forged rods and the part numbers changed (which doesn't mean anything really, they change for many reasons) but the rod bearing themselves were never improved, and later EWG N55 rod bearings fail just as often as earlier N55's because there is no change in the bottom end on 335i's but the M235i, M2, M135i, etc do have a forged crank but those engines fail as well, it has nothing to do with the rod bearings themselves and everything to do with how the car was maintained and driven.

    On all non pure M cars BMW's maintenance schedule is to go 10k miles on new cars with the original oil!?! This is terrible as brand new engines shed the most amount of metal shaving within the first 1000 miles so essential most owners are driving the next 9k miles with oil that is full of metal 😳. If you buy a new BMW definitely change your oil at 1k miles and at 5k. Then proceed to a regular maintenance schedule if you want the engine to last.
