As someone who has aged alongside Trivium, I can appreciate the aging on Matt's voice but also his growth as a singer and technique improvement. He has managed to compensate the passing of father time and use his vocal tools at an amazing level. I can't imagine how cool in 10 - 15 more years he would sound. Kepp up the art and the professionalism Matt.
Idk, there's something about that young reckless sound i guess, love his vocals on the first 2 albums, idk, on ITCOTD he sounded amazing too, so maybe it's better to just go in diff direction instead of trying to achive the past sound
This tour is literally going to be the best run ever!!! You’ve gone and now are touching up the albums, somehow making them even better than they were!!! I PRAY TO JOIN YOU WHEN PLAYING IN ADELAIDE, AUS!!!! 🇦🇺
Hey Matt! If you're interested in getting back the tonality of your screams in the Ascendancy/Shogun-days, you should actually go way lower in pitch (somewhere around B3-F4). The high note you are hearing on those older recordings is actually a really strong overtone that obscures the fundamental (sung) note behind it. Try also using a little less compression/constriction and placing the resonance forward in the throat. Experimenting with the volume is also critical. The basic rule (at least with this technique) is that the higher the actual sung note is, the less overtones you get and the more it starts sounding like a super raspy yell, instead of a white noise scream! The way I explained is also more responsive to overtone manipulation using different mouth shapes, while the beltier range sounds more "static".
matt, props to you man. it seems you passed all previous difficulties with your voice, and even came out through stronger and with more control than ever.
The thing I loved most about the old Heafy vocals was the switching between clean and distorted. For instance the live version of Built to Fall at Chapman. It's not just rasp or just clean, it's a non-stop switching between styles which give the song/words so much more power. I really hope that Matt will be able to switch as quickly as he used to with the new/healthy technique! Looking forward to the tour with BFMV.
I like to imagine that while he's listening all these old songs he's thinking "damn that's a sick riff! Somebody should sign this dude". Because I've forgotten how awesome some of the old stuff is lol
That's definitely an immense improvement, but the only thing that I like more in your previous style of screaming is that you sounded harsher back in the day, I mean, there are definitely notes in those screams but they are buried in a thick layer of grit... My favorites are those you did on the "In Waves" album. Your current style is good, you hit those notes precisely, but it sounds stripped down of some other characteristics. But I prefer this technique over that save one. Nice job
The wife got me tickets to the show in April for Christmas can't wait to see u guy. My favorite band in the world every album is amazing even got the trivium skull tattoo rock on guys .
Ascendancy will always have a place in my heart since it was the first Trivium album i heard. Listening to this comparison can only be compared to me telling my friends "Yeah Kill em all is one of my favorite metallica albums, but i really love Hardwired aswwell" It`s all about artists evolving and developing their own sound, not a "This vs that" scenario
Love listening to you sing something from the crusade. I had that album on last night when I couldn’t sleep. The songs, riffs, vocals, and arrangements are so great on that album. I might’ve fallen away from my fandom but shogun and the crusade are desert island discs for me. Recently checked out latest album and couple awesome tracks on it. Oh and you were cool as shit to meet when I met yall in like 2010 and I was this dweeb sixteen year old Cheers!
Do those long rasps from the last chorus of both Furies and Sin "these eyes can hardly see what is eating MEEEEEEEEEE" and the "You condemn me 'cause you don't understand MEEEEEEEEEE"
can’t lie, that’s how silence in the snow should’ve sounded! Watched this band evolve so much over the years as i’ve grown from a kid to a man, yet you guys still smash it out with every album 🤘🏻 please never change ❤️
I fckn love WTDMS album's sounding and your voice on it. IMO PEAK Trivium to my liking from sound perspective. Drums, vocals, guitars, all around a very well and thick sounding album
I fucking love ascendancy so much. U were the biggest inspiration in music that ive ever had. I appreciate very much the technical prowess and growth. You lost me on a couple albums they were almost too complex theres something for simplier dongs. My two fav albums are sin and the sentence and ascendancy followed by shogun. You rewon my interest and love for the band with sin. Ty for all ur hard work really appreciate it and many others love you for it too.
Huge fan since first days of Trivium, i have to admit i really prefer the "before" voice, was like more strong and consistent, and i don't know why but there it doesn't sounds like in the albums, even the last one :0 Thanks anyway, love u
For me screams and raspy singing sound kidna same, just with different notes in them. Like the screams are higher in pitch, but ask for more raspiness. As for the cleans, the album version like have more attack and attitude to it, they sound more open
You're almost back to the old era ascendancy... voice but like you said it still takes practice to get into it, so far you still sound rough for this era but that doesn't have to mean it's bad, maybe it's not even possible to sign younger anymore idk :D In your new era your vocals are on point. Overall I feel a very big improvement and energy in your voice when you will sign like this live :)
Matt do you have any videos of what you use on your vocal chain or what metal vocals should have on their vocal chain? I've been practicing vocals for a while now and want to record vocals now. But have no clue what to add to my vocal chain.
sounds great, am i crazy, obvi your voice got deeper but it sounds like you are head voice and not singing the same way even on catastrophy? and adding pitch is neccessary to scream safe? it makes it sound more like singing. this is just me being a curius music nerd fyi , no hate all love.
But seriously, I like the actual vocals very much! But in my opinion, you don't need to apply to every song. Some songs are good to hear with the original vocals, without rasp
The raspy voice was the best and is missed. The super clean singing you started with silence is boring as shit. Hope you bring the raspy stuff back for future music!
I don’t know any singer in metal who needs to talk about his vocals this damn much. Insecure much? Relax, Matt 😂 I feel sorry for anyone touring with BFMV. The bass player singing backups (sings half the set) blows everyone out the park on stage
The screams are not really screams in my opinion. They sound basically the exact same as the singing you’re doing in this video. Sounds more just like gritty singing. Doesn’t sound like there’s any diaphragmatic push to it. In my honest opinion if this is how your screaming will sound on this tour, I’d rather Corey just do all the screaming duties.

Same mate, it’s great watching an artist grow an evolve; a living legend of our time
Ah, father time. A shame that we can’t sound as amazing as we would a decade later. But damn, Matt’s good.
I agree. I can see a parallel between him and James Hetfield. Both are like a fine wine, getting better with age.
So true! Seeing Trivium for the first time in April after being a fan since 2004 and he's never sounded better!
Definite improvement, not only in the vocal sound, but in Matt’s confidence in his vocal abilities. Wonderful to see & hear
Idk, there's something about that young reckless sound i guess, love his vocals on the first 2 albums, idk, on ITCOTD he sounded amazing too, so maybe it's better to just go in diff direction instead of trying to achive the past sound
Though I've seen he can do pretty good "old" screems
@@KML-XX I believe he’s trying to improve on the past sound, just my opinion
Yeah, when he warms up good and all he can do them even better prob now, can't wait to see them on the tour
This tour is literally going to be the best run ever!!! You’ve gone and now are touching up the albums, somehow making them even better than they were!!! I PRAY TO JOIN YOU WHEN PLAYING IN ADELAIDE, AUS!!!! 🇦🇺
Adelaide, represent!! 🎉
Yoooo, Adelaide gang

Agreed
Kirisute Gomen simply gives me chill everytime!!!! Hope to see you guys in Brazil onde day!
Bringing rasps back will be a game changer live and for albums going forward.

Damn I didn't realise the tour is so close now. Gonna be my first concert. Idk if I'm even ready yet.
you are going to have a blast!
What a killer first concert!!! You'll have a blast
Same, same and same lmao. Gonna be banging tho
Matt! Im so excited for your vocal improvement. it takes years to get this good and you put in the work! cheers :)
Cant wait to see Trivium & Sylosis share the stage
Your evolution is always cristal clear to me! You're an amazing singer and amazing guitarist. Keep up inspiring us! Cheers from Brazil!
This is the content that I’ve dreamt of for so long! Thank you so much!
I can't wait for your new albums and projects.

Matt sounds fucking great
NO😓
Sounds better than ever. Whenever that next album comes out it's going to sound amazing.
Got my tickets as a Christmas present. Can't wait to see you guys again this Spring!
Can't wait to see you guys in Manchester, been needing to see you guys for years!!!
The wife got me tickets to the show in April for Christmas can't wait to see u guy. My favorite band in the world every album is amazing even got the trivium skull tattoo rock on guys .
This sounds incredible! Can't wait to see you guys in PHX in April
@Matthew , I am French and I love you, I love your music 💖
Gwen
This is awesome I can't wait till 17 February in Milan!!!!
If this is how your vocals will sound like...then i'm excited to hear this in Vienna 19.2.!
Beautiful!
If you are able to carry it through the whole tour it would be great!
I love this format. Matt’s voice has aged like a fine wine IMO.
Considering spending my 32nd birthday at your concert in Nashville. It will be my first time seeing you guys!
Absolutely destroyed Kirisute Gomen! PS, pleaseeeee bring the poisened ascendancy tour to Orlando next year....

This is so exciting….All hail Trivium 🤘
Do those long rasps from the last chorus of both Furies and Sin "these eyes can hardly see what is eating MEEEEEEEEEE" and the "You condemn me 'cause you don't understand MEEEEEEEEEE"
God I love that song
9:31 WOW, that was brilliant
Like lights to thr flies! Wooooooooow
Seeing the first and last show in the uk 🤘🤘🤘 see how the voice holds up after 5 shows 🤣🤘
Hell ya man, got the grit back
Awesome job with you vox brotha

It sounds to me that you are now on your peak concerning your vocals! Sound so good, damn it!
For me screams and raspy singing sound kidna same, just with different notes in them. Like the screams are higher in pitch, but ask for more raspiness. As for the cleans, the album version like have more attack and attitude to it, they sound more open
he kinda sounds like james hetfield when hes not singing
He turns from a young and aggressive warrior to a lethal and skilled samurai master 🐉
will bfmv and trivium be playing the bonus tracks? (washing away me in the tides and curses is a MUST)
much much better than 2020 safe screams but needs more air I guess, little too raspy
I think Vengeance Falls is perfect the way it is, easily my favourite Trivium album.
Helloooo
A huge evolution congratss 🔥🔥
About Mic live gear, whats your signal chain, Matt?
Love the Master os Puppets voice ❤
Cannot wait for the tour. What are your settings for vocal reverb?
Still got the juice!
I just wanted to stop by and say BOAT! RUDDER! STRANGE MOUNTAIN! ... TWIGADEE!
where can i score the shirt?
Please come back to Australia!
You're almost back to the old era ascendancy... voice but like you said it still takes practice to get into it, so far you still sound rough for this era but that doesn't have to mean it's bad, maybe it's not even possible to sign younger anymore idk :D In your new era your vocals are on point. Sounds deeper ! What bout the higher pitched screams
Listening to Brave This Storm without reverb reminded me of Rob Halford-like but maybe an octave lower.
❤
How are the lows sounding? Done a lot of rasp and highs here. I think the lows need to be worked on also
Wait so does this mean we are finally going to get Master of Puppets live again after all these years of not playing it?
Matt said once that there won't be enoguh time for the special edition songs, so I wouldn't expect it.
@ ah damn that’s too bad but makes sense.
Mate as long as I like their version, they have plenty of albums to play they won't play any other bands songs...
@ it’s a tour for ascendancy. Master of puppets is one of the bonus songs on that album. They used to play it all the time
@bananaman_04 yes in like 2005-2009 man
I hope they play Kirisute Gomen live sometime soon. Especially with the gritty vocals 🤘
Matt do you have any videos of what you use on your vocal chain or what metal vocals should have on their vocal chain?
I've been practicing vocals for a while now and want to record vocals now. But have no clue what to add to my vocal chain.
Howard Benson plug-in works great
@@Tybren thanks, checked it out. Looks promising.
@@jani14jani NP. I like it quite a bit and helps take a lot of the guess work out
MEAT BEEFY RETURNS
Matt you got your own lyrics wrong! It's clearly "Do you want to buy a fridge!?"
:P
Or lack of breast?
😘
sounds great, am i crazy, obvi your voice got deeper but it sounds like you are head voice and not singing the same way even on catastrophy? and adding pitch is neccessary to scream safe? it makes it sound more like singing. this is just me being a curius music nerd fyi , no hate all love.

Bro I BEG you play MOP on the tour
Ha the effect tho
Would you ever consider doing a re-recording of Silence in the Snow with raspy vocals? Gives more of a storyteller vibe imo
The raspy voice was the best and is missed. The super clean singing you started with silence is boring as shit. Hope you bring the raspy stuff back for future music!
Have you even listened to ascendency? Many cleans on that record
@ yeah but it was different. No all operatic and gay like silence and onward
I don’t know any singer in metal who needs to talk about his vocals this damn much. Insecure much? Relax, Matt 😂
I feel sorry for anyone touring with BFMV. The bass player singing backups (sings half the set) blows everyone out the park on stage
sounds like strained grandpa
Please record the firsts concerts until you fuckup your voice again 🙌🏽
The screams are not really screams in my opinion. They sound basically the exact same as the singing you’re doing in this video. Sounds more just like gritty singing. Doesn’t sound like there’s any diaphragmatic push to it.
In my honest opinion if this is how your screaming will sound on this tour, I’d rather Corey just do all the screaming duties.
He can just do the raspy cleans and scream with his safe technique, sounded pretty strong lately
@@FeercholainThe safe technique sounds so bad. It is passable live, but still not great.
The cleans sounds better here
