- Oops. I said rotating shift lock when I meant to say tilt lock. Well, anyway…This is a great running original engine with probably under 5 hours of use on it. It still has the original spark plugs in it! This video was made with the original propeller on the engine. I believe this vintage 8hp differs from the newer top recoil style 8hp’s in cowls, flywheel, connecting rods, carburetor and cylinder ports to the best of my knowledge and from recent input from another RUclips viewer that claims to know something. A parts lookup comparison would confirm or deny this.

I was born in 84. Makes me feel like an antique lol
😂 it seems like just yesterday to me!
Same
Looks just like my brother's motor. Carb got plugged up and just took it into the shop. Suspect ethanol gas w/o Stabil, and/or Chinese fuel line on his new gas can. I hear the fuel line liner disintegrates and plugs up the carb. I told him to make sure he's using non-ethanol high test gas, proper 50:1 mix + Stabil and swap to rubber fuel line and a new squeeze bulb. Cheaper than another carb rebuild.
Unfortunately it seems like the #1 problem with marine engines is fuel related.
I agree! I love these engines as well, in spite of a few unforgiveable engineering flaws. Yep, this one has got the bigger intake/exhaust ports, and slightly different inner exhaust cover. The 8hps also have a bigger intake manifold as well. I too, prefer this vintage for the reasons you mentioned. It was a big mistake changing that bullet proof carburetor to that dumb ass "modular plastic carb". In addition, the sync procedures are crazy complicated on the newer ones as well. The newer ones (91 and up) are ugly, and full of CPS. I hate that front shifter also on the new ones, very sensitive and too easy to accidentally jam it from forward into reverse. The only nice thing about the newer ones is that they do have better rods, so the powerhead is much quieter. I don't think the newer ones are any faster than yours. You have got a gem there, these 8hps got plenty of power for sure.
I just picked up 2 of these motors in beautiful condition earlier today took about 30 minutes to get each one running.unfortunately in upstate ny my lake is frozen so i have to wait till spring for a water test
Enjoy them after the thaw!
I just got one yesterday! Where do you have your idle mixture adjustment set at?
@portvert2301 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated is a good starting point.Let the motor warm up and slowly turn the mixture screw in until it starts to kick/backfire then turn it out 1/4 of a turn and you should be running nice and smooth. Also use a 50:1 fuel mix on the engine with good quality 2 cycle oil.I suggest quicksilver its great oil and not very pricey.
I have the same one on a 16 v hull and it still run like brand new
Great! It’ll most likely outlast any modern engine.
Yea probably
the exhaust baffle on the 1991 and up w. top mounted starter makes them idle noticeably quieter. I haven't found these 84' and up 8hp motors to be any more powerful than the 91' and up ones. same 2 big intake ports vs. 3 smaller ones on the older 7.5hp/84' and up 6hp motors.
Food for thought. Thank you.
Great Vid and a sweet outboard. I just picked up long leg and the gent gave me everything needed to swap to a short. idles so sweet.
What boat do you have this on? Thanks In advance.
Sea Nymph 12K
pERFECT SIZE--lightweight engine !!!
Sure is!
I just bought this same motor, where do you have your idle mixture adjustment set?
Start at one turn out from fully closed and then go by ear.
Does this one also has the booster port technology that the 2001 8hp of yours has?
Yes I believe so, though I haven’t had the cylinder head off of this engine to confirm. It’s performance tells me it does.
What size prop is the best for this engine ?
I believe the stock prop is 8.5 x 9P, but selection always depends on application.
I intend to run the 8 hp evinrude in a 14ft aluminum v hull boat with 4 persons .. so for this application, which prop would you recommend? The 8x7 or the 8.5 x 9.
Definitely 8 x 7
Thank you
@@GearHeadJPmy top speed on the same outboard 18m/h., prop 8.5x9, What could be the problem?..
What speed did you get ?
21mph. I show it in the video.
