Ended up going with merchant automotives kit with the new case half just to be on the safe side. Also comes with fluid too which is the perfect amount and obviously all the gaskets and silicones needed.

    Because the case is magnesium it is subject to lots of expanding and contracting along with some flex. Because of that you have to use an anaerobic sealer that never completely dries. I had pump rub that I fixed with the Kennedy diesel repair kit. Almost 200K later and no issues.

    I’ve rebuilt the same transfer case on my former 05 Duramax and on my 01 1500. You don’t have to send your case off to have it rebuilt. You can do the same mods on your table far less then having someone else do it. The NP 261’s are very simple to disassemble and repair. In your video your halfway done by opening up the case. Good luck on your adventures with the Duramax, the best diesel on the road by far in my opinion.

    Thank you for your service firstly. Have you, or anyone reading, figured out what that busted off nub of metal is that was pulled out with the broken anti-rattle clip? I thought it may be the pin on the rear case half that the anti rattle clip seats onto, but they do not look the same. I may have to tear the whole thing apart and make sure whatever that is hasn't come loose in mine and worked its way down into the planetary gears while the case was on end for removing the rear cover.

    I'm not much on getting other people to work on different parts of my truck. And this case you are 100% right to do so. There are a lot of known issues with these transfer cases. If you Google it it will show you the list of all the things that other owners have experienced. The number one problem as that pump rub. A lot of times people don't find out until there's a hole or a crack. Good luck I hope you get your truck back together quickly.

    A transfer case service doesn't involve tearing it apart so obviously someone has been in there for some reason before. That transfer case has been leaking obviously if you barely got anything out of it when you drained it. Fluid doesn't burn up it just leaks out. Normally a drain and fill is all that is needed in a transfer case.
    Yep, clean it out really good, throw it back together and put it back in. Reseal it properly refill it and it'll be good to go for another 100k LOL.

    Buddy of mine drove his on fwy in 4wd. It broke the chain that got wedged in case and locked the transmission. Amazing how much torque a Duramax makes only to transfer it through that cheap diecast POS New Process Gear transfer case. Don't worry my Dodge Cummins uses the same POS they all do it. I recommend using brass plugs to keep the steel ones from laterally welding themselves to the case.

    Transfer case fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles along with transmission fluid. There’s no reason not to check the case fluid level when oil change is performed. Pump rub kit should always be installed and grey rtv used. Good videos, keep us informed on the researching “built transfer case” companies out there.

After a lot of research online and talking to a few suppliers, I installed a new pump housing from Merchant Automotive that has an improved design with wider footprint. My TC housing had some wear but not too bad for 180k miles. BTW, don’t use that black RTV. It’s the wrong stuff and will fail. Use a grey gasket maker that’s designed to withstand ATF or hydraulic fluid.

    I would have just got a bearing kit, rebuilt it and did a pump rub, these transfer cases do not break very often and take a lot of abuse. Oh, and....check the fluid more often lol. I rebuilt the one in my LLY, not too bad of a job.

  • @Condor1970
    @Condor1970 2 года назад

    I believe the new rebuilds have an Aluminum case cover, instead of Magnesium. It's heavier, but much stronger, and should last the life of the truck with regular fluid changes.

But i did find out i have a water leak on my truck and had a mechanic look at it turns out my water pump is slightly leaking and the 1 of the o-rings on the back plate between the motor and transmission

    Should use AutoTrac II transfer case fluid only need like 3 quarts or so. Permatex 81182 Gear Oil RTV Gasket Maker (this is what I bought) SEALANT

    • @MrBlueJK4
      @MrBlueJK4 5 лет назад

      I'd spring for the gaskets, I'm thinking RTV was what he was pulling out of his transfer case, and you definitely don't want that in your pickup pump in your transfer case or transmission.

    • @Blackneck1994
      @Blackneck1994 5 лет назад +3

      Autotrac fluid is only for transfer cases that have the "auto 4wd" feature - not to be confused with "automatic/push button" transfer cases. Autotrac has friction modifiers in it for the clutches that are used in the auto 4wd transfer cases. That friction modifier does not do anything for the NP263XHD transfer case, which is what he has. 261/263XHDs (Duramax and 8.1 transfer cases) should use Dex 6 or GM manual transmission and transfer case fluid (which is said to be the exact same as the old Dex 3).

      Most gm truck T-cases only use auto trak II fluid if you have electronically selectable t case with an auto mode button. Otherwise they can use manual trans/transfer case fluid (previously known as dexron III)

    That's about how much pump wear was on mine when I pulled it apart. I was hoping you would have dug a little deeper in so we could see if the shift forks were about worn through. With no fluid in it I'm assuming they probably are. Mine were and i had fluid in my case, lol

    I enjoyed the video and the technical information was very helpful. I do not want to be a jerk but it is a New Process transfer case Duramax doesn't make transfer cases. I know what you mean but it is like when someone says his Duramax pulled a stump out. No his GMC or Chevy pick-up with a Duramax engine pulled the stump out.

    Good vid. I think my transfer chain is stretched in my 07 2500 Duramax. Have you done a vid on how to tell if it's stretched or not without taking it out of the truck? If so I'd like to watch it. Another guy made a vid on doing that, but would be nice to get your take on that technique. Also, do you or anyone else know of anyone that has transformed their Duramax from a 2500 to a 3500 dually? My truck needs a new box anyway so im tossing around that idea. I so miss my 05 Duramax dually.. Thx.
