    i trashed two rear ends on my 03 lb7 and spent alot of time looking for in depth builds specific to the dmax and this video is better than anything i have found. excellent work by the gentlemen who assembled and explained the differential.

    Another great video Josh! As you say, learning together. Kodiak seems like a class act to deal with. You are one of the few people I know who are doing it right with HD drivetrain throughout when shooting for that high HP mark. Usually it is backwards where diesel owners go high HP and torque and then fix what gets destroyed! LOL!

    there's plenty of guys running the factory rear ends at the track with 800-1200hp! you just had some bad luck. I'd say your set for life now though! 👍

      Only if that was actually true ! Lol my grandfather built drag cars and trucks the rear end was one thing that was one important part most rear ends cant hold Up to 1200hp

      Very true. Pushing 8ish in my 07 lbz on 5 for the last 5 years. Replaced pretty much everything except the rear end... knock on wood

    Josh, I hate it that you had this happen. BUT, I really appreciate you showing the video of Kodiak doing the work. I am very impressed. I live in the Texas Panhandle, but will be using Kodiak when it comes time for the transfer case or axles. I'm assuming they do front axles as well.
    I've got an LLY and I've learned a lot from your videos.

    Great video! Glad Ryan's Diesel Service/Kodiak Truck help you not only with the repairs/rebuilds but also provide content for your channel which helps us all!
    Not sure what the process is with getting the rear end. Did they have an axle to perform the repairs and then ship it to you? If so, do you have to pay a core fee unless you ship yours back? Did they discuss gear ratios and the options they offer to make the rear end stronger, more suited to what your truck will mostly be used for, and/or improve driveability/fuel economy? Also curious if the diesel rear end could go in a Yukon XL 2500? Maybe you could make some content based on these questions.

      I had them rebuild a existing one they had at the shop and I will Be sending them my core back but they definitely gave me the info I needed to make the right decision

    It’s crazy but when you’ve been in this field long enough, you can actually feel .010”. .005-007 is just a bit tighter.

      I know axle rebuilders that don't use gauges, they go by feel. You've done it so long, you just know.

      2015_ Rubicnn oh exactly man. Seeing how simple this guy makes it look gives me confidence to try my hand at a simple ring and pinion swap one day on a project build. I’ve heard you don’t mess w carrier shims unless you change the carrier. 🤷🏼‍♂️ you can def feel when something is too tight. Just like how most of us don’t torque axle nuts after doing bearing preload. We just know.

    I have a bigger rerend under my 2000 Chevy 2500 now I used out of a 05 3/4 ton I put a solid spool in the rerend an 3,73 gears it dose way better thin ever now over the stock 4,10 gears I pull anything 100 down the road with a 6.0 automatic in it

    Does the same race and bearing set for the stock carrier work on the Trac-Rite carrier, or do you need a different set? I'm doing an overhaul on my 2015 lml, 3/4 ton and I'm considering this upgrade.

    Just bought a 2020 2500 Diesel Denali with a auto locker rear end. Hope it is a good product, planing on traveling with a RV trailer with it in the future.

    Awesome video! Couldn't find a dodge aam carrier so I ended up getting an Eaton truetrac, the gears on my g80 are trashed. It won't even lock, so I'm upgrading before it grenades

    great video I like to build my own axle learned a lot your g80 locker had problems from the get go if your lucky they only last 160 miles and that is if you don't abuse it thank you again

    300k on factory bearings.?........ i have a 06 Lbz one owner with 550k original bearings. No problems at all

      Same here 422k miles 2004.5 lly rearend,engine & 5spd allison haven’t ever been cracked open-its had a 90hp ppe tune since deleted in 2007-original turbo(vanes stick in summer time)original injectors etc.routine preventive maintenance & driving it hard is how it’s lived.Best truck I’ve ever had & probably my last one.

    Yup, should ALWAYS have some lube on bearings, even on a 'dry' build, because micro-welding can eaily occur and, later, be a start point for failure.
    Another weakness with the gear type slip limiting differential is if a wheel is lifted/lifting - same thinjg, hold light pressure on the brake to give some resistance so the 'diff' can work.
    Many years back, I believe Quaife used a small plate type LSD in the middle to provide that resistance for some models but think they dropped that option - cost and/or lack of demand?
    If you're going to be doing 90mph, especially loaded tows, I would strongly suggest a proper diff' cooler - or at a minumum a monitoring the rear end oil temperature!

    700hp that would be awesome! Wish I could put more hp thru the 05 I have, anything 120hp over stock and the trans goes into limp mode :/ any "cheaper" modifications out there to help handle the extra power?

      Heath Brockway I have a lb7 with the 5 speed and on my 120 tune it goes into limp quite often but I installed a transgo shift kit and it helped for a while but it all depends on what shape your trans is in before you install it. Also it’s more of a band-aid until you build your transmission.

    I converted a 2004 Chevrolet Express 3500 shuttle bus into a camper. I will be using in snow, beach sand and desert sand. I was in snow last week and the right wheels sunk of the road into a snow bank and the right tires just spun and they are all I had to get myself out. Those Stupid left ones just sat there and laughed at me.
    So, if I want good traction in those conditions, I would need a differential that would switch to the tires with the better traction but I know for a fact I don't want the axles to lock because if they are both spinning, the vehicle will just slide off the road as neither side has tires in control. I always want one side rolling while the other is digging in. So what type do I need? What is it called? Limited Slip or Posi traction or what? Thanks!

    That looks like a 10 bolt or 14 bolt 9.5 g80, the g80 in a 11.5 14 bolt is like a clam shell design and much stronger

    Hey TMas,been sub for long time,great stuff. I've got 06,3500 dually,LBZ,egr delete,pcv reroute,5" exhaust,modified stock air. Vanes in the turbo seem to be sticking,which turbo would be best if pulling weight on this engine? Egr bellows are busted so I have to do the uppipe. Will LLY turbo work ok? Thanks

    Why did he use an air gun to tighten the pinun bearing bolt? You are supposed to torque them I’m. Not hating on him just curious the reason why? He even said if u over tighten them u we’ll wreck it witch i do know just to clearafy

      They don’t go off torque, usually go by pinion drag with gauge or backlash. But when someone has been doing it a long time , they have the feel. Man in brownsburg Indiana, pappy Blair was the same . All by feel. Built a lot of race cars as his son and grandsons. Nobody better.

      Ya and that’s when you know your (or the guy doing the work) is good. After watching some of these guys and their work...especially with the Allison....I would not hesitate to trust his.....”hand feeler gauge”. These guys know their shit without a doubt and they are a pleasure to watch do their thing. I live 2000 miles away, they have never worked on anything of mine personally so I have absolutely no stock in these guys whatsoever, I’ve just seen their work and the true professionals they are. You can tell a difference just by watching someone work and their knowledge!

      Joshuas10 Typical build is from $1350-2450. This is a wide window but I can tell you if your gear set is still good generally then at that point your closer to the $1350 mark. If your gear set is junk or the rear end in completely blown up its closer to the $2450 price.

      I believe that both rears are built by AAM, basically the same rear housing for both manufacturers. Simple manufacturing for AAM just different spring perches etc on the outside.

    Research proper driveline angles before spending good money on putting that rear end back in. I don’t think The lift blocks you have did you any favors, possibly the reason the pinion nut came loose. Pinion angle and driveline should be within 1* parallel of each other. At worst a double cardan driveshaft is needed, still not that bad.
