This sounds 100% like a spitefic. Seeing it was written by an adult man it feels like a hateful "teen girls who like music are hysterical and dangerous"
This is so much wilder than what I expected from an Avril Lavigne manga
Yeah while I believe that the main character is the absolute worse because of her behavior (then again she is a child) I feel like the ending and the whole story was a little to edgy for anyone who can handle edgy content
Coming into this I was not expecting the story to get so dark. Some scenes just left me flabbergasted especially the part where Hannah ended her own life. The story gave me insane whiplash and the worst of them all was how abruptly it ended, I would have loved to see a continuation of this manga just so that I can watch what bizarre and unexpected events that were gonna happen next. Also Avril Lavigne rule!
When I saw Avril Lavigne in an animanga video, I immediately thought of how her covers of "How You Remind Me" and "Bad Reputation" played as the ending songs for One Piece Film Z

I clearly remember watching the motion comics they did for this like over a decade ago (many of which are still up) and the physical books actually censor a lot of the explosion damage...

The crush was freaking out about being on fire, but he was actually drawn WITH clear damage to his face, nothing intensely visceral but the first panel of his damaged face actually freaked me right out as a younger person (and honestly still does a teeny bit, but I'm weak to uncanny faces so personal opinion)
More notably is the teacher and the blonde girl - it shows the teacher in shock and the panel noting that he burned, but it cuts out the part where he was in shock because he was HOLDING THE BLONDE GIRL'S SEVERED ARM as well as cutting out the full page image of the teacher aflame (not really creepy since it was just his silhouette in flame but oh god still)
and all this for a middle schooler who loved Avril and manga and was excited to see the two together :/

Ok I looked it up and WOW that was really visceral?? The teacher holding the severed arm and "it was still twitching like Jessica was still alive, like she was dancing for us". And he's so traumatised he just stands there as the fire gets closer and doesn't even move as he burns to death, even though he could have escaped :(
Damn I can see why this was censored! Heck, even WITH the censorship it's way too much for such a young audience wow...

I found a Star Trek Amerimanga at a Barnes and Noble once. You can definitely tell but it does actually look like manga. It’s structured as a series of short stories based on the original cast, like it was a collection of the 60s/70s trek comics.

If you know Card Captor Sakura, you know Tsubasa and XxxHolic. They are a shared, interconnected universe. It gets very dark and very complicated, so no I will jot go into it. But yeah, CLAMPs works all secretly being connected was a hyperfixation of mine as a high schooler. (Tsubasa in particular) Anyway, love the video. I personally never read this manga, but it's interesting to listen to.
Edit way later. Also, some of their manga are not even secretly connected, but blatantly shown. That is the case for CCS, TRC, and XXXHolic. Clow did not die in CCS, he literally had to go deal with the consequences of his actions, leading directly to both TRC, and XXXHolic. Sakura in CCS even appears in TRC, thought it is WAY later in the manga, and though it has been awhile since I read XXXHolic, she may also appear there.
I am An Old (TM) and was a adult when this dropped. But an adult into anime/manga and going to cons. And I will say this. This book was FUCKED UP even for the era it came out in. We were already mostly beyond the edgy era and I remember this being something we made fun of a lot because of how dark it is while having such a cute art style.
There's no truer mid 2000s experience then walking into your local library and seeing Make 5 wishes, Vampire Kisses and Princess Ai in the manga section. Would love for you to also talk about Princess Ai one of these days, I remember reading it and having no idea what was going on with the plot.

Bought this at a charity shop today and read both in a few hours and dear god the twist, that flabbergasted me. When she ended her life at the end it completely shocked me.

Excuse me?! That was dark 😳I remember seeing this manga and thought about buying it but decided not to cause I thought it looked a bit silly. I’m kinda disappointed I didn’t pick it up when I came out. I would have been very shocked.
I remember seeing this both advertised in a magazine, and when Video OnDemand's Anime Selects section (showing my age here, oof...anyone remember Anime Network?) put the first two chapters in a video set to some of Avril Lavigne's songs. I remember, as a Lavigne fan, thinking the premise and art were interesting, but nobody I knew really talked about this one, and after the second volume what little talk there was stopped entirely. ...I can see why; I can see wanting to make a darker story or a more flawed/unlikeable lead, but this was just so mean-spirited.
I do genuinely have to wonder how much say Avril actually had in the story, especially considering her appearance and line at the end.
Honestly this tiny bit of the story feels like something from school days where the main character is the absolute worse but at least school days ending was satisfying this story's ending is a little too much especially on the whole be careful of what you wish for aspect

On the topic of Amerimanga/why these don't "look like" or "feel like" manga. I think it goes beyond art style to an extent. Honestly I doubt this concept would be hard for viewers here to understand but, cartoony manga and anime, or anime that looks more "like a cartoon" have existed since the 60s with things like the works of Fujio Akatsuka, Sakura Momoko, Yoshito Usui, and Fujiko Fujio.
The reason these don't feel like manga in many cases, is in I think, a lot of the smaller details both culturally and in technique. Even with a lot of gag manga, there's a distinct Japanese aspect to various elements, and writing tropes that are far more popular in Japan from decades of cultural influences.
Most of these don't feel like manga because even if they were closer visually (less amecomi style colors, using a gpen or other tools popular with manga artists, proper ordering), the writing will inevitably be closer to American media.
My oh my was this a ridiculous manga. I guess that’s where the mangaka for Magical Girl Site got inspiration/hj

Gotta say, this is definitely the kind of thing that I would have written as an angsty & miserable teenager in both the best & worst ways, complete with the recurring suicide motif. So while I can't say that I *like* this story, they definitely knew their target audience.

I’m quite sick, which is almost perfect because I forgot about this fever dream of a comic. I’m gonna try to condense myself as much as possible (I grew up during this era and I study comics, so sorry in advance).
1. While I loved her stuff (I literally received 2 copies of “Under My Skin” for the holidays one year, that was awkward lol), I always felt like she and her label tried HARD to brand her as edgier than she was. Canada rocks! There’s definitely adversity and a mix of experiences there. But all my relatives, even at their harshest, haven’t come close to some of the stuff I’ve heard on the news here in the US??? So the edgelord fad cash in doesn’t surprise me, and I don’t think it did then, either.
2. The art has no right being this good for this, lol, I kinda feel bad for everyone involved and hope they got paid a LOT
3. Methinks they were trying to ride the coattails of “Princess Ai”, which, while I can’t remember if it had any, would have waaaaay more right to bring up self-harm than this did, given Courtney Love’s personal life. (I have it sitting right in front of me, might read it after a nap)
4. I have a feeling you’re right about the “this got canceled early so we had to wrap things up” point, but tbh I also wouldn’t be surprised if they just decided to go in this direction, given that, like you said, this is an obvious cash grab
5. I also reeeeeally wouldn’t be surprised if the explosion was because “Columbine just happened, so this could totally happen, too! Schools today are complete war zones, and the kids today are more angsty than ever!!”. Iirc there was a lot of media around that time that involved some kind of school shooting/bombing/etc tie in or plot point, since it was so widely broadcast. I think the only bigger plot point at the time was “OMG TERRORISTS AROUND EVERY CORNER”. Makes me cringe to the 12th power. >

It feels weird hearing about this, I remember finding the manga as a kid but I only saw the second/final volume & thanks to not seeing the first it made it feel like Hana was just someone struggling while dealing with some demon doll she found that implies in some shown flashbacks that he fucked a lot of people over & her parents ending up divorced(had no idea of the cheating) with the possibility of reconnecting due to the sorrow of her disappearing after she jumped off the bridge. While weird I didn't think to much about it & got really interested in the picture of I think Avril picking up I think an elf or something doll a few pages after the final pages. That pic of her with whatever that doll was weirdly became an obsession cause for a bit I based some outfits on my characters around her outfit.
I did find the first volume at one point but I think I only saw a few pages from it like Hana imagining herself to be friends with Avril Lavigne while her parents have issues. I don't recall seeing how she met Romeo nor even how she met the old man cause whether it's partial face blindness to certain things or just being a kind with issues understanding I thought the old man she was visiting later in the second volume was the teacher that was killed in the explosion & his mental state just ended up pretty bad thanks to being terribly injured in the explosion some how.
All in all I agree that this could have been done better & Hana's parents clearly need counseling, family therapy & to take Hana to therapy but seeing as they thought making her go to this one thing would help(I mean it could have but she needs more help than keeping people company) I doubt they would think therapy was a good idea
