- 2019 BMW K1600GT Review First Ride - Helga had to go for her service recently and Coopers BMW in Tunbridge Wells very kindly gave me a 2019 BMW K1600GT to take for a spin. Never one to turn down the opportunity to try out a new bike, I bit their hand off! Here's my first ride of the 2019 BMW K1600GT captured on my all new GoPro Hero7 motovlogger setup.

That route reminds me of my commute a few years back on an old honda dominator, certainly not as smooth as that 1600GT, great bike and great review, cheers
At 76 years old l got one & l love it does things it’s not supposed to above 3 miles an hour as stable as a giro.
Yep absolutely 👍
Good video Bruce. GoPro7 looks good. Liked your review, like you said no TMF, thank goodness I would've been asleep lol. 👍
Mate, what an entertaining and informative video! Thank you so much! I'm about to pick one tomorrow for a one-day rental and found your video when trying to get to know the bike better. I appreciate it!
Thank you for the commuting footage. People don't realize or they don't believe. I do with mine. Btw turn off traction control and get some power wheelies... if you can believe an 800 lb tourer can do it. It's a very FUN bike!
Absolutely loved this review mate! First class filtering sir!
Cheers Mark 👍
I've had two GTLs, slightly softer more touring /pillion carrying version and I love them.
Dont think I'd have anything over it.
Good vid. I’ve got the Grand America 1600. Absolute beast, I’ve also had fitted the ShotGun Exust witch gives her a lot of carrictor, she has a amazing growl in the mountains also the pops put a massive smile on me especially thru a tunnel. The power delivery is especially good for having a pillion. And on 14hr ride days she is comfey and stable. And when you get to the twistes she handles like a sports bike, even with a pillion.
Yet again good vid.
Thanks for another great video Bruce. Very enjoyable viewing!!!!
No bother Matthew, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Fantastic honest and fair review Bruce. I’m on a GSA , love it, love the K as well for Europe. Always a dilemma. Like you I’m a Scot in Kent. From Ullapool but living in Dover. I’ve used Coopers , some really great guys there but find Customer Service at Bahnstormer Alton absolutely unbeatable and worth the distance. Cheers Neil
Neil Carrington
Hey Neil, great to know. I’m visiting B’stormers, Alton this Saturday. Two bikes on my list: the 1250RS and the one reviewed here. Decisions decisions...
Great review! Felt the same when I rode one. Awesome engine though!! Still keeping my GSA. 👍
Voyage of button discovery. Just bought a K16 after a Pan; love it.
briliant bike which i use as daily comute to work and back as well for trips. This model have some issues like my one pulling to left when you take hands off, others report this as well. Good review and you are right it is oturing weapon.
Great video! Love the bike. Takes me back to being pillion on my dads K1200LT when I was a teenager (and riding it a few years after I passed my test). Seems this is the modern version of that beast.
It’s a great bike Gordon, really surprising what it can do 👍
I love your accent and funny commentary. Thanks for a very entertaining review and video of riding though the city.
No bother Les, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great video! You did a super job and easy to follow and understand. Thank you!!
Thanks Jeff 👍
For me, here in California, it would mainly be used for touring. It's a nice looking bike worn a great deal of advantages. Thank you for your review, it was very informative. Now I need to go to a dealer and sit on one since I'm 6'4" with long legs.
Nice vid Bruce. I have a K1600B,,, and I am loving it!!!
What about between 75 and 100 MPH? Do tell, won't you?
Thanks TP1, you’ve sold me on it over the GSA. I was looking for someone who’d commuted through London on it, and you’re the man! Years ago, I had a K1200S, which I loved. One time, it needed its timing chain replaced. It took BMW a month to sort it, and they loaned me a GS1200. I hated it, not because of the dynamics, because they were superb. It was because every Wednesday night, for the whole of November 2007, it would piss down on me, from M1 Jnctn 21, all the way to M1 Jnctn 12.
The GS has virtually Zero weather protection as I found out on my weekly trips from Leicester back to Kensington. In fact, on the very last time before I got my K1200S back, I was so wet (on the outside) with my gear so cold, I wanted to give up biking. I ended up doing something I’ve never done on a 100 odd mile trip. I stopped at Toddington Services for a coffee. I was dry inside, but when you put on kit that’s wet on the outside in the winter, it’s horrible.
Thanks for the review of this bike, now I’ve just got to get over my spinal surgery and pop over to my BMW dealer. (I can’t wait until November!)
Great video good to see how she filters👍
I enjoyed the review balanced pictures of a bike ill probably never get to ride. That’s what you’re out there for, Thank you.
Cheers Ron 👍
The way you throw that machine around is simply amazing. Nice work
Wow thanks Chris 👍
Love that sound 😍
Great review Bruce, last trip away 2 of the lads had these, was pillion one of the days to collect mine after getting chain & sprockets (yes should've done so at home beforehand instead of BMW Santander) but what an impressive bike, smooth power everywhere throughout and so much torque we were taking 30kph roundabouts in 6th!! My mate keeps his in 6th everywhere. Anyhow, keep up the good work!!
Cheers Mark
Great review and nice riding! I'm looking at getting the 1250 RS although this looks pretty tempting! I should probably ride both.
Thanks bud, I’ve not ridden the new RS but it’s supposed to be great fun 👍
Top vid as always Bruce! at 24:00 I was expecting the 'reverse' function to be tested out ;)
Reverse works very well, but it is operated via the starter motor, therefore, no real speed control. More of an on/off affair. Quite manageable though. A valuable feature on a bike this heavy.
Nosed in and downhill, it's a godsend.
Well that was one of the best reviews I've seen for the big BM. I used to be a courier for Addison Lee back in the 80's and that brought back many happy memories of getting to the front. I'm thinking of getting one of these. I have a 28" inside leg and the GS is too high, but probably a 2017 as i can't afford brand new but still want reverse gear. The RS is on my list too but I really want as much weather protection as possible and I think this will do a better job. 2 year old 1600 or brand new RS, dilemma. My current bike is a FZS1000 so I'm used to smooth inline 4's rather than a tractor. Thanks again for a great review, especially in town
Cheers Michael, the new 1250 boxer engine is a joy to ride mate so the new 1250RS may well be the bike for you?
The GT is fantastically smooth, but it will cost a fortune to service unfortunately. 🤷♂️
Pick mine up in two days , swapping from a GSA. Can’t wait . Great review .
Nice one, hope you enjoy it.
👍
Great review 😃
It's a nice big, got a 2015 and just changed exhausts it sounds amazing 😃
Aye I bet it sounds mint under power with after market cans! ❤️
Great vid TPO, what a bike. What a commute to work, you need a knighthood for having to do that every day. Keep up the good work, ride safe buddy. 👍🏍
Ha Ha thanks Ian 👍
Nah.. The only bike that’s going to get in the way of GS ownership for me will be a Superduke GT. Great vid again bud 👍
Great video brother, everyone knows it can cruise down the motorway but you show it can scoot in traffic as well great job.
Thanks Rondo, it was fine in traffic, really quite agile for an oil tanker! 😉👍
Great review TT, just traded in my k1300s, without bike at the mo, looking at the GT (17 model).
Got one coming next week, you certainly can filter on it which is great. Loved the video and you have a new subscriber. Amazing filtering dude, respect.
Thanks David, welcome to the channel bud 👍
I’ve been lusting after one of these for sometime, but I’m really happy with the GSA. I’d ideally like both! I test rode one with a pair of Akro’s fitted, it had a lovely exhaust note. Maybe one day. Nice review, I don’t envy your commute though.
I did think it would sound mega with aftermarket cans, got a lovely over run.
Cheers Marc, glad you enjoyed the vid 👍
Great video as usual TP1. I do think that the GS is a much more versatile machine, and you can go fast on them as well! Glad I don't have to go near a big city, way too many tin tops for my liking. Once again, great entertainment. Thanks mate.
Cheers Andrew 👍
Great review, had one of the first k1600 gtl in Devon, great bike and got 60mpg over 1800 mile Europe ride.
Wow that’s great! I actually really liked this bike after I’d made this vid, when I rode it the following day and took it back to the dealership, I really enjoyed it and would love to do a trip on one to
See what it’s like to live with properly 👍
Rode the GT & GTL, fantastic machines that are now on the purchase list once I reach the couch age. At 6.3 ft the 1600B GA feels super cramped though.
Good man, great to see a realistic ride through a town centre as the size of a bike like this always makes me wonder how effective filtering it would be. You demonstarated that perfectly thanks!
Yup Hero 7 is soooo good, esp the stability.... another super review, certainly a mile cruncher; think though I still prefer the GS...
Entertaining Video, thanks for the show. Great bike!
Cheers Bernie 👍
Stunner of an engine, all it needs it's a full 6-1 system to let it SING and BREATHE or maybe just 2 decent aftermarket cans.
I would love a new K1600R or RS.
Great work on the review. 👍👌😎
Thanks Jiga 👍
Awesome review and a bad ass bike. I want one
A very nice looking bike Bruce. If it was just long highway miles across the country then maybe, but with the mix of highway, rough country back roads, including gravel, twisties & some filter work in town then I’m with you & will stick with the GS. Enjoyed your ride through London. Was on holidays there this time last year so thanks for the memories. Your trip with TMF, Chops, etc was an enjoyable view so hope there May be some more outings some time.
Thanks Russell, glad you enjoyed it.
Aye I think the GS is hard to beat as an all round machine 👍
I have a 2017 K1600 GTL and fell for her the moment I saw her (bit like the wife!!)....if you hit the sport mode on the GT it becomes a different beast.... my GTL doesn't have that button so I get to keep my license a little longer!! Enjoyed the video..... was fun.. BTW love the Angry Owl analogy..gonna steal that!!
That may be an "old review" Brucey but I do love it. Micky had his when we went to Spain.. he rode it around like a toy ..such is his natural ability ... and seeing it first hand like that was inspiring. A lovely bike indeed, x.
Cheers My Lord 🙇♂️
I’ll never forget that trip, was amazing to see how Micky handled that big old bugger! 👏👍
Great review mate. I bought mine in 2011 brand new! It now has just over 134,000 miles and is as good as the day it came out the factory. Word of advice: stay away from BMW servicing as it costs a fortune. Invest in a decent tool set and a GS911 diagnostic tool. The biggest pain in the arse is taking off the tupperware but once you get over this it's easy to work on - invest in a good cordless dril too for the tuperware :-).... I love mine and I use it almost daily. I've travelled all over Europe and as far as Moscow and back on a few occasions. Never missed a beat. The ABS and warning lights you were seeing was probably just a dirty sensor. Had the same thing happen to me coming back from Berlin a few years ago. Pulled in at a services, and a quick wipe of the sensor, sorted. I'll be getting another one soon - and like you said, they are expensive but in my opinion, worth every penny. But it's all about personal preference and riding style. This thing is simply a mile muncher. I did Bristol to Berlin via the Channel Tunnel in 12 hours (with stops!). Secondhand prices have plummeted over the past few years and not unusual to see 2016 models fully kitted out sub 10k mark.
2019 bikes with hill hold, def 1250GS gentle pull of lever sets it...normal pull away releases it....and can be set to come on automatically if you stop on a incline/ferry ramp/mountain road, saves a lot of revving and clutch work....would guess it is on the 1600 GTL
Had Pans and RT's but love my K1600GTL, you're right, it's a mile muncher, but god is it fast, you just have to have eyes in the back of your head....... So comfortable though, and it comes alive on the back roads of sunny Yorkshire. Did 3,000m tour through Europe and it never missed a beat, the missus loves her armchair on the back with the armrests and big foot rests. Its so comfy, it's worth getting the Mickey taken out of me by my mates for having an old mans bike like a wing! Everyone I know who has a GS loves them, but never been interested at all in them. Great little video!
Great video Bruce. Pretty bike but I have to agree, not my cup of tea. The 1250 GSA is threatening my bank account. Have to wait and see, still need to ride the Multistrada Enduro and the Superadventure S. Hopefully next week.
Happy Easter.
Peace!
Love the video. I’m shopping and choices are down to a Gold Wing or this. I fear this one will be out of the range I’m willing to pay. Nice bike.
Gold Wings are pretty expensive also . Both are great bike though .
What a monster of a bike, commuting through London with that thing-respect-Bruce. 👍😉
I genuinely didn’t mind commuting through traffic on it Gaz, didn’t feel any bigger than the GS to be honest
Great vlog as usual. You get character with Teapotone! 👍
Horses for courses. If I had £20k and wanted a BMW I'd choose this over a GS. Each to their own.
Anyway, glad to see that no matter what BMW you choose, the electrics are as unreliable as ever. 😁
Ha Ha, yeah I’m not having too much luck with the new ones! 😬👍
It might be a grand more than the new GSA but by the time you've paid the extra for luggage for the GSA prices are very similar, plus this has a heated seat, electronic screen and stereo built in.
I've had the R1200RT for 4 years and thinking about moving up to the 1600GT; love the sound, the extra power and the agility of the 1600 but did see the comment about hand protection. I'm in Canada and use the heated grips and heated seat a lot in the spring and fall. It looks like the R1200 has better wind protection than the 1600 which I find strange. I'm sure I could find an after market solution, but BMW should figure this out.
I totally agree with the demonic owl look lol can’t believe you got through those gaps I was just getting ready for the scrapping sounds good man definitely a two up touring long days with along way to go in a hurry great job keeper coming 👍👍👍
Lots of practice commuting mate, gaps are there to get through 😉👍
Great review Bruce would agree with all you said, love a go on one though
I’ve got to admit, when I got back on it after this vid, to ride it back to the dealership, something seemed to click and I had a whale of a time riding it back!
It’s a total weapon for the road 👍
Love the bike review vids mate. Top banana
Cheers Jay 👍
Good review, enjoyed the humor!
Thanks Nick 👍
Great vid TPO, I OWN A 2011GTSE, love it and did the picos last year on it, very chuckable on the twistys, it does look like an angry owl and I've called mine "Bruce" 🙌😎😎😂
Ha Ha thanks...... I think 😉👍
@@teapotone👍 its a pure compliment, every time I open the garage doors I think "look at that" (in your accent !!) Hence Bruce 👊👊
The 2019 has a more relaxed throttle map, so if you think it's fast now, it's a lot perkier and will max out at 170-175 after a remap.
Dynamic also makes a huge difference. The K16 has very tall gears so you could stay in 2nd or third for quite a while before being forced to shift. I've stayed in 3rd till red line that's about 120 MPH.
E-Nonymouse where do you get the remap?
Had the same prob with my Blackbird crazy turbine smooth high speed back in the late 90s commuting to Apex each day. Working the Pan Euros around central London, then jumping back on Bessie to get home- i was definately going to go to prison. So chopped it in for a Africa Twin, there started my love of adventure bikes 😇🏍
Great review mister. I definitely have my eye on the GT for my next bike. Have always liked them. I want one. In black. But definitely no top box!
On problem is my height: 5’8.
I’d loved to know your view of the new RS as that’s also in contention
Cheers.
Cheers Clive,
I’ve not ridden the new RS yet, hoping to get one soon for review so I’ll let you know ASAP 👍
The way you pronounce „growl“... love it.
Wow, I do commuting on a RT, no way I would do commuting (a) on that beast or (b) in London. Excellent vid, nice entertaining commentary.
Cheers bud 👍
Of course i will leave a like. You are now, officially, my favourite RUclips blogger..
Wow thanks Kevin! Glad you’re enjoying the channel bud 👍
Gutted you don't like the K, I can't imagine riding anything else now, but I do mostly long distance 2 up riding. I really thought the K16 was peerless and really didn't like the Boxer engine.
However the 1250 Boxer is a work of mechanical art and totally changes the character of any bike it's fitted in (only ridden the GS and RT though).
Good work my friend, thanks for an entertaining channel, maybe see you out there. Stay safe.
Thanks Dave,
You know, I’d actually like to give the K1600 another go but this time maybe take it on a trip and do more varied riding on it. I’ll see what I can arrange with BMW?
Totally agree with you on the 1250 Boxer engine, it’s beautiful to ride with isn’t it 👍
great review. your road craft is impressive.
Thanks very much Jason, glad you enjoyed the vid 👍
Your funny and i love your tone 😂. I wont cancel the delivery of mine, coming tomorrow. Changing from Ducati ms enduro to this and are really looking forward to prove your wrong 😍. Keep it up mate ❤️
Ha Ha thanks Jorn, enjoy the new bike bud 👍
@@teapotone fucking sales, gotta wait another day. This would never happen i Britain and im so frustrated of the level of professionality, not only in this matter but i have recently many excamples and this just top it today. Well, well, its only a day but when you clear your schedule, u know... and im just a little boy waiting for my present :-) im glad he´s more than next door away, i could have ended up in prison
Just to came here to say i stillabsolutely love my K1600GT. What a fine machine !
Has your bike given you any problems? I'm considering buying one and Im wondering if they're a dependable machine.
@@thollingsworth4910 They are really good bikes but keep in mind next year BMW is releasing a new model.
Nice film Bruce....I stepped off my XT660Z Tenere and rode the big BM from Air Studios in Hampstead to Midhurst...quite a difference!. There is no doubt it is an incredibly sophisticated grand tourer/ posh town bike...BUT....I could never get excited by it, and it feels like a small step away from having a car. I'm definitely not its target audience!!! Cheers, Steve
So close on the lane splits, brave man. :)
I like how you went straight for the dynamic settings 😂
No point in any others surely?? 😉👍
I like it! It's a popular bike. Going to south of France
I love this bike, however, I can never find a windshield position to stop buffeting, and I hate to put it all the way up since I don't like to see tru it,but over it!
Great review, thanks! But as the forums point out, from 2017 onward the K bikes are dumbed-down due to Euro 4 and need a Bren Tune to restore the "kick in the pants" acceleration. I purchased a 2016 GT earlier this year specifically because I wanted that edgy throttle. There is nothing else like it and I absolutely LOVE it!
I didn’t know about the pre 2017 models, I bet they are a hoot to ride!!! 👊✊✊✊✊
Greetings from Stornoway..Good video! I'm a very happy RT 1200 owner but maybe should test ride this..
I do love this bike tbh, very comfy and great tank range. I like the inline 6 engines on the gold wing and this. Very niche audience though
Love the bike especially the gtl version but could it tempt me away from my RT probably not. The RT does everything too but is more licence friendly
Top lads at Coopers TW. The only people I trust with my bike!
Good review TPO 👍
Cheers Craig 👍
I have to agree with your sentiment about UK Bikers not giving the 'Nod'. It used to be the norm to acknowledge each other, sadly becoming a thing of the past. I still give a nod, my other moan is the lack of courtesy from all drivers on the roads. A simple thank you goes a long way. Love the vids Bruce
Here here John, thanks a lot bud, glad you’re enjoying them 👍
Plenty of nods wherever I go. Mainly Peak District, Yorks dales and lakes. Based in Manchester
Here in Australia we nod.. except the Harley boz. They dislike anything else.
Excellent review and not totally sure filtering on that would be advisable Bruce🤨 And can’t believe you broke another bike with the ABS/ESA lights on?!?; awesome bike but just doesn’t look as sweet as the HP 1250 GSA IMHO🥰
I did the very same thing but with the red one they are a good dealer highly recommended
Well done review, Mr. Connery ! How about you and the Flyer take a drive together... would be hilarious... the social commentary would be priceless.
Great video. You sure know how to handle that cycle.
Cheers Bill 👍
I've ridden one a few years ago ... I know what ya mean Vs the GS feel ... GS has the punch with it being a twin .. the straight 6 is a beautiful motor .. so smooth.. a continent killer in total luxury, looks smart in the black too.
Absolutely 👍
Borrowed a mate in Reno's 1600GT and rode it down to the Grand Canyon with the missus on the back and fully loaded. Mad fast machine but HEAVY to heave around the traffic in Vegas. Pure pleasure on the open road. The whistle rather than the roar takes a bit of getting used to as well as the shaft drive. Left and right hand corners aren't the same. Nice video :-)
Thanks John, glad you enjoyed it
Loved how you blocked out the mph on 20:02-20:06 as you are speeding and the "pervert breathing"...dude you had me cracking up. I have a K1600B Grand America and it has the same setup basically and I love my bike.
Ah there’s seems to be an issue with my editing software as it keeps doing that on some vids? 🤷♂️
It’s a great bike isn’t it, really capable machine and a lot more fun than I thought it’d be. I’d love to take one for a longer trip 👍
teapotone I did St Malo to The dunes de pila, across the Pyrenees to Perpignan then back across central France. Didn’t miss a beat and loved the ride. There’s a video of the trip in my timeline.
You look really comfortable in London traffic, I could have made it look much more difficult 😂
Great review, thanks!
One of my favourite bikes was the Blackbird; maybe the K1600 would be be more boat floaty for me?
A good bike I’m sure , can’t see you on one long term tho , your so well suited to the GS , you think of the teapot and instantly think GS
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! 🤣
That was my total nightmare when I first started TeapotOne, I HATED the GS and all it stood for, I was a Gixxer man through and through!!
Weird how times change eh 😉👍
You seemed to have amazing confidence when ane splitting fitting in places I wouldn't do. Does the camera distort the view that much. Looking for a K1100 LT replacement as mine has 278000 kms. Cheers from Oz
Yeah things always look a bit different on camera, there’s plenty of room. 👍
This very well maybe the ultimate form of long distance riding! The cruise missle for the highway bound traveler!
I really miss this bike, would love to do a bigger trip on one and really give it a go 👍
Nice review , it must be difficult to review a different bike other then the one style you prefer . The GT is away different style bike then a GSA with a Boxer . I had a 2011 R 1200 RT , and move to a K 1600 GT . The RT was a much better bike for twiste roads ,much lighter . The GT 's inline 6 has some great power to it . So I guess it all depends what your looking for in a bike . Careful with you're lane splitting . Keep up the good work .
Good looking bike but I'm worried that the smoothness and quiet engine will make me want to nod off especially on long rides. I need a bit of buzzing and engine noise to keep me alert. I'll go with Kawasaki's ZX-14 (ZZR in the U.K) with saddle bags and a set of akrapovic slip ons 😎
Some of that filtering made me sweat a bit! Man, I hate filtering. The Hero7 view is so much nicer. So much more immersive to the viewer, and of course, quality. Cracking vid, mate, and cracking bike. Almost made me feel warm and toasty, too! ;-)
Agree, pretty swish bike but it's no VFR!
Ha Ha I actually quite enjoy it tbh!
Yep I’m really happy with the new GoPro, just wish the battery life was better 👍
Good morning Bruce, Thank you for the video and review. If you get chance try a Honda st1300 paneuropean!!! You will not be disappointed ( I know it’s long in the teeth) what happened to the Gloves!!!!!! Take care 👍😎🇬🇧.
It’s literally a 500m ride to my house from where I stopped to get the off bike shots. The amount of grief I’ve had for not wearing gloves!!!!! 🤣😂
Bloody kit Nazi’s the lot of ya 😉👍
Nice review! No nonsense and straight up. Not acting like a professional reviewer does, just like one of us normal blokes, because you are 😎
How do you have your video setup on your helmet? I am personally waiting for the 2020 Yamaha FJR 1300es to drop, so I can see what changes, if any are made. That will decide if I buy the 2020 or the 2019. The FJR has almost everything the BMW’s have. Hopefully the 2020’s will add some of the new features. Great video again, thanks much from across the pond near Atlanta Georgia. Take care and keep both wheels down my friend.
Cheers John,
I’ll be doing a vid on my helmet setup in the new year bud 👍
Thanks for your support 🙏
Did you decide? (1200rt rider here)
Found myself missing your gs too whilst watching. Two cylinders are plenty enough
that's the bike a'l buy when i get old. All those buttons though seem a bit distracting, whilst you playing with them i expected the ejector seat to go of 🤣
Ha Ha, now THAT would’ve been a ratings winner!!! 🤣👍
