Another really useful tip, if you have a plastic palette that's caked with dried paint that doesn't want to come off easily, pour a bit of water on top so that it fills each well and carefully put in the freezer until the water is frozen. What happens is that the water freezes and binds to the paint, so when you rinse it under warm water the dried paint comes off effortlessly. I would recommend doing this in a bucket so the paint doesn't clog your drain.
Daenerys thank you
Can you do it with a wooden palette?
Nice!
Daenerys thanks! I have a plastic pallet and there is black paint in it and it’s not coming off. I’ll try this. Thanks!!
I have so much stuff covered in acrylics at work that i gave up trying to clean I cant wait to try it.
Edit: it worked about as well as boiling water.
I love how she just goes right into it without a long intro
Right? I picked up my phone expecting to wait for the intro to be over and was surprised when I had to put it down immedietly. I love it.
Same!!
I know, right? People these days would slap on vintage filters and overlays then spends 5 minutes of the video playing overrated ‘relaxing’ music as they pour tea at a snail’s pace and dramatically munches on some crackers before going “Heeeyyy guuuuyyys, welcome to my channeeeeelll” and blathers about their life for the next 5 minutes for no reason at all before actually getting onto the video :/
Bonus points if they somehow manage to get a sponsor, and they spend another 5 minutes uselessly rephrasing unimportant details.
RUclipsrs take note!!
Thanks Katie. I am 70 and started painting a year ago and I am really inspired by you.
Yay that’s amazing! 😄🙌🏻

Her: don’t use too much water
Me, who didn’t even know you should use water when painting: *surprised pikachu face*
If you are worried about too much water, you can always dab the access at a sponge, napkin or tissue paper ( because I am broke) before starting to paint :)
Me too haha
I've heard using water instead of the right kind of medium can cause the paint to eventually flake off the canvas, but I've never really seen that. Just a thought, though.
lol and I use acrylic paints like water colour paints
Yep I didn’t know that either 🤦🏽♀️
Colour mixing is definitely a struggle
luminor007 i do use it but I still don’t understand completely! Haha
There are some really good videos on color theory on youtube, they really help you understand colors on a deeper level
what’s that you don’t understand? it’s really with practice. Tints, tones, hues, shades, oh myyy!
Me too for sure. I have been using a colour wheel and that has really helped, but where I really struggled is never mixing enough paint OR mixing TOO much paint. The worst I find is when I mix too little and then cannot get the same colour mix back for more. :(
especially when you cant find the right color again!

Agreed 🤠🤠🤠
I just found you on RUclips . I'm 64 years old and last week I picked up a brush , opened some acrylic paint tubes and did my first painting in 47 years . I painted a humpback whale breaching out of the ocean . My friends were amazed . I've been receiving nothing but compliments . I've even had 2 friends request that I do some paintings for them . After watching your videos and learning more about acrylics from you I think this will help me to get better at it . Your videos are great .

Hello to all who live in tropical countries! 😁
aryan hugz hello! It's sad how climate makes painting more difficult
Yes but do you live in australia
No, I live in the Philippines. It's like summer the whole year round. :D
Hello from Australia where it's always hot n dry!🙄
I live in the center of Brazil
It's ridiculously hot
I’ve been trying to paint for 3 years now and never knew I needed to use water with my acrylic. Bless your heart thank you so much for this helpful information!!
I was just about to comment on my God. I never knew I was supposed to wet my acrylic paint so girl, we are totally in the same boat. Let me know how it ends up turning out for you when you do!
Jesse, I love how you said “trying to paint”! You described what I do, even after 15 years!🤣
I used to really suck at painting with acrylics and then I took this painting course in college and I gained so much confidence with the medium since. Now I painting big canvas paintings and absolutely adore it
I do still struggle sometimes with getting the right colors. And I like, for some reason, to limit myself to using only the primary Color tubes because I like to mix my own paints. For some reason I also tend to lean towards warm colors then cool colors when I paint. I don’t know why
I'm a beginner but I got a good tip from an artist. I put a wet paper towel on a surface (like a palette) and then I put some baking paper on top, on which I put my acrylics on, so they don't harden and dry out that easily while painting. And you can put another layer of baking paper on top of the acylics if you are taking a little pause, so they don't dry out.
The water is one of the biggest thing I struggled with in both acrylic and gouache paints, and I hope more people find this helpful because it’s such an important element that not enough people talk about!
Can you do more arcylic art tutorials please, I love watching them soooo much.
I'd love to! 😀

Thank you, I am a year 7 painting lover and stay after school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday just to paint and get my skills higher
Is there a tutorial for the painting in the background
I want one
These were really helpful! I had huge problem with water, I used too much water. I paint mainly with watercolours, so adding water is like second nature :D I use glass from picture frame as palette, it works well.
There are tons of comments saying 'you look like Luna lovegood' but I think you look like a young adult Annabeth Chase (this is a compliment btw)
YES
THANK YOU!
wait hello do you know tøp?
Yep but not as calm
Yeah
Really loved watching this so glad I found your tutorials a few months ago when I first started painting. Thankyou for your help and time xxx
I just discovered you and am having a great time learning from you. Painting is my therapy during the pandemic!
Hi Katie, lots of great tips thanks. You didn’t mention a Stay Wet pallet that I use and love. I use paper towels as a base and baking parchment as a top, keep base moist and a light spray of water on my acrylics and I can keep paint moist for up to 2 weeks.
Sheila Burdon wait.....so.... how do you keep the bottom paper towel wet?
Sheila Burdon , do u mean u put your paints directly on the paper towel? I’m a beginner
So, do you mean you put paints directly on the paper towel? Anyone?
MrBoguechitto2 The paper towels take a really long time to dry if they’re the slightest bit isolated from circulating air, so she probably covers the palette with plastic or in a box. The paints are laid out on top of the parchment paper, which is on top of the wet paper towels, so the moisture comes from both underneath and from the top (water spray)
Some people use actual towels to provide moisture for longer btw, but just keep in mind that this means there’s a chance the towel will get stained by the paint if you’re not super duper careful, so use an old towel or piece of thicker cloth
I use foam plates as palettes, work great and cheap....and grounding/toning your canvas is always a very good thing...that way you never get those tiny spots of white coming thru your painting. I usually do mine in a very light tan color...great video.
TIP - for palettes, I like to fold a piece of recycled paper and cover it with clear scotch tape! Afterwards it's disposable or you can wipe it with a damp cloth and use again.
I’ve been painting with acrylics for around 10 years now and this was incredibly helpful! Thank you so much!
Thanks Dear Katie! This list has been very comprehensive and useful! ❤️😍 I first came across you flower paintings and they inspired me much. Thank you for all your efforts❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for your tips. I just starting getting into acrylic painting recently and your tips are proving very helpful with what I may or may not need in terms of supplies soon. Keep up the great work.
Great tips thanks. You remind me of Luna Lovegood

I use icecube trays that come w/ a lid to mix my most needed colors for a painting and a palette on the side to constantly mix other nuances or thin them up w/ water.
This way I don't need to take a breaks to make my basic colors too often, they don't bleed into each other thanks to the little containers, they don't dry down in between painting sessions thanks to the lid and the quantity I can make.
Great advices, thank you!
I made myself lids with self made waxed fabric and elastics from old face masks that I attached with a few stitches, or I put the elastic over the waxed fabric to seal the tray.
Thanks a lot for your helpful videos, Katie! I'm learning so much from you as a novice painter, you are my inspiration!
I just found this channel form looking up paint tips and I'm in love with this channel! She's so nice and gentle with her tips and she gets right to the point. I'll be sticking around to see more!
It took me 7 year's of my 15 year's as an artist to really learn how to mix colours to create atmosphere in a painting. Being self taught sometimes take's you the long way around thing's but in the long run you're a better artist. Thx for the great tips 🎨😊
Great tips. I may try the grounding. And the mist bottle i often struggle getting the paint across the camvas. At first i thought it may be the brand i was using but if i spray the canvas it will help👍👍. I love ur videos!

Thanks Katie, great video. Two question - How do you prepare the canvas - do you use gesso? And do you use anything in the end to finish the painting?
I love everything about you ~
And great tips!
Good basic tips. Especially looking at the object for its lines. Paint what you see not think. This definitely where I need to improve. Thank you.

I have been searching youtube for a half an hour looking for a great video with actually good tips and this is the first one and only one I've found that is good. So, thank you. You're amazing. This really helped. Definitely subscribing.
Some great tips in there - us artists' get ripped off royally: point being the glass palette vs chopping board for a start!
I started to paint with acrylic and I don't really have a problem with mixing colors. I personally love acrylic paint. I've painted a sunset and the night sky and a galaxy and it turns out really well. I use the face that acrylic dries fast to my advantage.
Thank you Katie, very useful tips. I am 67 and started painting last year and I love that so much information is available online. Your tips are short and sweet and deep
That is awesome! I love people who paint
I like that light misting idea! I also like that tip about really looking at your object. Nice tips. Thanks!
Hello))) Thank you for sharing))) But have you ever had your painting flake off the canvas? I was using water in the beginning as well. But now I prefer to use different fluids and gels instead. There are also special sprays to keep the painting and the pallet wet, but not with water. Water is in fact a dissolvant for acrylic. The more water you are using, the less binder there will be in the acrylic. Special fluids serve as a binder in fact. With them we can be sure our painting will not flake off in a couple of years even in a very dry climate.
Thank goodness I found you I have just been painting and I was using straight acrylic paint no water at all lol
Paint
me too 😬
i’ve been using a lot of water but i didn’t think i was doing it right 😂
Flow medium will also help and is better than water alone.
Thanks for these tips! They seem so obvious but I never thought of them
I use a fine mist sprayer for both my palette and the canvas. The fine mist helps me not go overboard. Fluid/mediums do work, but can also mess with mixing and transparency.
My DIY pallete fits in a low-profile wide tupperware container and is just a sheet of acrylic panel. I can preserve paints in there for quite a long time, especially if I mist it up. I use wax paper to make cleanup easy and keep the paint from gumming up the plumbing.
Paint what you see is hard to put into words, but I try to go for general shapes. I discard all the notions of seeing things as objects, and I have to trust the process to eventually make something that looks like the object in the end. It's scary. But it's really exciting when you occasionally step back, and you can see the objects coming together!
❤ this video is very useful! Will you also make one about oils?
Yes I love this idea! 😀
Here's a tip for cleaning up: Windex practically melts acrylic paint.
My coffee table says otherwise 😭 the wood is stained now.

Hey Katie, I'm a beginner and don't know what "grounding the canvas" means. Do you have a video that explains this? Or maybe could you do one?
Matthew Hines priming the canvas with a darker color like a brown or orange
You Need to prep the canvas or your paper, its help to creat a non white base, add texture and also block water (goodbye waving paper from water).
Two options :
-light one, with white and tiny bit of yellow
-dark one :dark brown (terre d'ombre brûlé, idk the English name sorry) and phtalo blue. It makes a sort of black. But dont use black
And no water!! Crossing gesture to make texture. Need to be drying for at least 5h
