”Paint what you see, not what you think you see.” - That was probably the best piece of advice I ever received in a painting class, while I was working on my graphic arts degree. And you are the first person I’ve ever heard quote that exactly. I do think of that often, and thank you for reminding me.
I like all the things you said as I have been painting for 25 years now am not doing it on a daily basis, I know that I should be, but life gets in the way, and now that I'm a widow I can have more time to paint, so my greaving process will be a little easier for me . My husband was WWll veteran and I lost him in July at the age of 99, I miss him so much, as he enjoyed watching me painting and went to classes in town . That's was before I found a lot of different artists, like yourself that give so much good instruction. Each one of you have your own personal style and I can use all of them in a painting style to fit my needs. Will send you a picture of my very first painting, and I had on real instruction on how to get started, as the teacher had 15 others that were asking for her help, .. when she came to me she said just follow what the paper instruction said, so I did, but put my own spin on it. I hope that I can send you the picture , am not teck savi but will try.
All good tips! If anyone is reading, don’t buy a staywet palette because you can make one by using an airtight plastic container, flat cellulose kitchen sponge(s) and freezer or cooking paper. Wet the sponge(s) and wring them out a bit but leaving them damp, cover the bottom of your airtight container with the sponge(s) then cover the sponge(s) with the freezer or cooking paper and put your blobs of paint on top of the paper. Lightly mist the paint blobs. You can periodically mist the paint during painting but it must be done by a fine mist spray, not a normal spray bottle. Then when you have had enough of painting, mist again and put the lid on to seal. If you won’t be painting for a few days just check the sponge underneath is still damp after a few days, and spray the sponge if it’s dry or put it under the tap and wring out. Put your paper with the paint back on top, lightly mist and reseal. I managed 12 weeks of doing this when I became too ill to paint. Replace sponge if you spot any mould on them.
But the water???? So many say DONT THROW IT DOWN THE DRAIN! PLEASE help ideas on how to get rid of the washing water (that I've washed my brushes and sponges etc in)!!
Using dawn dish soap and an old toothbrush with warm water helps me wash my used brushes when I'm cleaning them. Of course, brush out the old paint by using the tooth brush from the base of the paint brush out to the tips. Loved the hand soap idea to reshape a brush. Thank-you!
Learning to mix colors is so important. It took me years to realize I should have been following the basics of mixing the basic colors "red, blue, yellow" making a color wheel etc. That improved my painting. Mixing my own blacks from colors like ultramarine blue, and burnt umber, or alizarine crimson. etc. I still use straight black from the tube sometimes But, it looks more natural if mixed for things like landscapes. I also keep a journal of the colors I mix in a little sketch book. That way I can write down what paints I'm using to mix the color I paint a swatch of in the sketchbook. I also paint color wheels in it of different reds, blues and yellows. Just good to get to know how different colors work together.
I learned this recently. Limited color palettes is how I have managed to improve so quickly. And now I save myself a lot of money by mixing my own colors.
Great tips, I wrote down all the tips that were new to me ... I'm hoping to start painting again after a 40+ year break. And I had never used acrylics. Most appreciated!
I am a beginner in painting . I didn’t draw anything for years . Now I want to try it more often and your tips encouraged me a lot to start it beautifully . Thank you !
just a tip, I use little lids from empty pill bottles as little covers on my palette over each blob of paint color, many of my paints are still wet for my next session, usually paint every day, sometimes more than once.
I absolutely love all these tips, but I had to add on for those struggling to keep their paint wet when they need a break, I put my palette in the freezer whenever I need a little break, works up to 2-3 days I’d say, depending on the brand. I love this trick and helped save me a bunch of paint
You are spot about Painting from memory. Having done that many times I realised it is one of the ways I have held myself back from creating good paintings. Thank you 😊😊
There's a problem with tip number 1. A lot of walls are not square. You're better off judging by eye looking at the canvas rather than trusting any old corner of a wall. I'm a plasterer by the way, so I know lol
Don't store your wet brush upside down in a pot, the water gets into the ferrule and wrecks the brush, that's the other reason you don't rest your brush in the water pot. It weakens the glue binding the bristles together, often weakens the glue holding the ferrule to the handle, and if your brush handle is wooden it will likely swell and or split, unless you want to destroy your brushes.. then have fun
Appreciate the solid logic you gave to support each tip, esp as even though I paint a bit, I didn't know why for some of what I do. Really insightful and thank you! 👍
Your tips are pretty great towards the end.... Buying a more expensive paint... Is right but a few reasons why some people. Can't afford the expensive paint
This video was extremely helpful. I've got a boyfriend, and his dog of nearly a decade passed away just before him and I met. He loved this dog very much and still talks about him all the time. I've always been a decent sketch artist and have begun branching out with different utensils, one idea that's been recurring is to try painting his dog...I want it to actually look realistic and personal, not just like a dog that looks similar to his. Never having painted before, I have no idea what I'm getting myself into with fabricating this idea and your videos have been very helpful to have predispositions of materials, methods, and techniques. Thank you! If there are any tips anyone has for painting shorter fur that would be great. (The dog is a white short-haired pitbull, very handsome, and I want to do him justice in artform)
If you want to paint wet in wet, because of the blending, with acrylic paint I have a tip for you. (I also teach) you can use the glazing medium from Golden. It’s a retarder with normal medium. Each color you put some drops from this medium and you paint stays wet longer.
One of the best tutorials for the basic beginners supply line up...very simple and to the point...easy to grasp...and the best part was the music 🎶...finally something upbeat and progressive...OMG...please keep that vibe...in my opinion activates and ope s the minds eye for creativity...love it
Thank you for these tips. Love the one about the canvasses. I thought they were all the same and about the primer as well. I bought the Galeria one you have there and it makes a vast difference alright. The first time I tried I painting straight onto the canvas. And I thiught give me paper anyday but I know better now. It pays to put that extra time and money into it. If im going to do it I'll do it well or not at all. Honestly I had no idea there was so many primers and mediums for different things until I got into RUclips Thank God for it. . God bless Susan 🙏👍🎨😀
Hang on, with regards to the tip of putting the canvas in the corner of the wall to check for squareness. That's making a HUGE assumption that the Wall is actually square, and that's a dangerous assumption. Even in buildings that are supposed to be square, the walls usually have quite a bit of varience to them.
I was just going to make this comment walls are rarely square.the best way is to measure the two diagonals if they are the same then the canvas is square.
5:12 I always wipe my brushes before swooshing them in water. It gets most of the paint off first and keeps the water clean and clear for so much longer! Sometimes I paint acrylics using a waterbrush. Not so much on canvas where you need thicker layers but on paper when I'm colouring illustrations and using acrylic paint as if it's gouache
This was one of the best 'starter' videos I have seen. (don't think you drew breath once!) Even my 11 year old was fascinated and got very excited. Thank you so much. One question: how do you know when to use water or not???
I've been using the exact same 2 dollar water based paint since I was 7 (some are even the exact same bottles 😭) I seriously need to get new paint, especially since i'm starting to a do a more realistic wildlife art, a lot like yours but done my an inexperienced high schooler 😅a lot of this I have figured out by myself after a lot of trial and error in my 9 years of art and 6 years of painting with acrylics, thank you for making this cool video to save beginners from the same mistakes I had. I finally got to try out some better paint at my school of all places, and wow, using paint that his a higher viscosity is sooo much better, even if it was still just cheap public school paint.
Got set of 6paints from my grandparents (they learned i got into drawing and wanted to give me something i may like) Now i want to learn how to paint To make something for them
Hi I have found that if you not only cover your palette with cling film, but to put them in the fridge. I know crazy, but I experimented and they were still wet to use a week later
I've just sort of always mixed colours as I go along, mostly because I forget to mix enough to begin with, so usually I just start with one base colour mix then shift it as I need to achieve lights, darks, and hue shifts.
I was led to believe that storing your brushes upside down causes water to remain in the ferrule of the brush and ruin the fibers of the brush. I always clean my brushes with brush soap, rinse thoroughly, pat them dry with a paper towel and then store them laying flat. Thoughts?
Hiii Dear Your artwork is very beautiful and captivating. People are learning a lot from your efforts. I am one of them. You go ahead I am with you. You have a different talent than the people of the world. Salute your art from the heart.🙏
You are amazing young artist, very helpful tips and very inspiring artwork, I also wish one day I could make tutorials and teach on RUclips, been asked a lot from Fb fan base, but I need time and motivation. Anyways keep up the awesome work 👍
i loved this video it was really helpful, my parent bought me a wooden pallet to use for acrylic paints and i am having a hard time using and cleaning it. can you please suggest something that that can be done to make my pallet work more easier on a wooden pallet
When it comes to the pallete, I use a hard cardboard from an old anti-frame, put two layers of brakfast foil on it. When I'm done I just cut the foil and throw it all away. It also helps me a lot in paint usage, I can grab more paint from the pallete because it doesn't stick to it and the surface is so smooth I can mix colors better. I tried to use a wooden one, a few plastic ones too... But they were always so scratched that it was hard to clean them. Now it's way easier and quicker. Still, I prefer to make a sketch on my computer and then use transfer paper on an already toned background. It also saves a lot of time. Now I painted a spider for my fiance's birthday, using your fur tutorials. I'm getting better at it really fast. I'm sure he will like the painting a lot. The only thing I really need to do is trying to find better paints and learn more about mixing colors. I sometimes waste the paint when the color I wanted to create turned out bad and I need to try again to succeed.
Great tip! I sometimes do this but with biodegradable grease proof paper instead. Works in the same way but the paper can be recycled afterwards. I’ve tried plastic and wood too and didn’t really like them either, I much prefer glass now, so much easier to clean! Really glad you’re finding the videos helpful and good luck with your spider painting!
I buy rolls clear plastic gift wrapping, at the dollar store, and tape it on the edges to a cardboard backing from a paper tablet. I used to use a paper palette tablet but those are more expensive.
I disagree about the paint brushes, learning how to make best of one bigger brush first is extremely important. In my studying years of art, when I started to learn painting, I was only allowed to use a one medium to big brush and only primary 3 colours and a white for the longest time, and only when I mastered that one brush and those 4 colours, only then I started to use 2 more brushes and 3 more colours. This way I learned how to mix colours very well and very quickly, but also I learned how to master loose brush work, shapes and proper technique, instead of focusing too much on the detail too early.
Thank you this video was very helpfu! I am trying to take that step from becoming a hobby artist to becoming a professional. Could make a video on how to sell your art?
Thank you! I’ve just made that leap in the last few years, of course I’ll try to make some videos sharing my process for selling art and making that switch to becoming a professional artist!
I've worked in construction long enough to recognize the flaw with canvas squaring wall hack. Walls have all been worked on by drywallers, so one should be skeptical about their squareness.
Great video great tips the one thing I disagree with you is taking the canvas and sticking it in a corner to see if it's Square the reason that doesn't work is because most walls you're going to put it up against are not Square to start with so that's not going to really tell you if the canvas is square.
Question? Can you build up layers with acrylic and finish certain parts of a painting with oil? Or would this cause the acrylic under the oil to crack?
As long as the acrylic layer underneath is completely dry then you can work with oils over the top of them this is something I’ve started doing in my oil paintings.. But you cannot paint acrylics on top of oils 👍

@@mc_navias2 I had to buy more shades of paint than I wanted to, but who doesn’t love buying art supplies? As a student I was short on cash.

i loved this video it was really helpful, my parent bought me a wooden pallet to use for acrylic paints and i am having a hard time using and cleaning it. can you please suggest something that that can be done to make my pallet work more easier on a wooden pallet
I advise just covering it in some metal kitchen foil before you paint, then just peel away the foil when you need to clean the palette and start fresh
You could get some spray lacquer or clear coat and give it a hard glossy coating that the paint won't soak into
Thank you so much for your informative tips as it will help me to paint correctly
Thank you very much for those tips!
Hi thanks for these amazing tips on painting 🖼️ your pictures or photos I’ve done 👍 some of those mistakes you mentioned myself David 🖼️🇬🇧❤️👌👍

Whats the pros and cons of natural hair vs synthetic hair for acrylic detail brushes??
That’s was nice of you, good job
thank you so much for this tips. I learned so much as beginner. thank you, appreciated 👍
Thank you for this video, useful tips
You can mix airbrush medium with acrylic paint instead of water. Adding too much water dilutes the paint binder so it doesn’t adhere.
Thanks. Tips were very useful!

Very nice. Thank you for the tips. Did you think about making a video on how to apply gesso?
Nice tips but should mention the do's & dont's of drying brushes. Flat is best so the water doesn't go into the metal tip and loosen the glue.
Thanks for the tips~~^^ 💜
Great video great tips the one thing I disagree with you is taking the canvas and sticking it in a corner to see if it's Square the reason that doesn't work is because most walls you're going to put it up against are not Square to start with so that's not going to really tell you if the canvas is square.
Great tips!!! Thank you!

As long as the acrylic layer underneath is completely dry then you can work with oils over the top of them this is something I’ve started doing in my oil paintings.. But you cannot paint acrylics on top of oils 👍
