He was an Oxford scholar, a defensive back, a bartender, a Golden Gloves boxer, a gandy dancer, a forest-fighter, a road crew member, and an Army Ranger who flew helicopters. He was a peacenik, a revolutionary, an actor, a superstar, a Casanova, and a family man. He was almost a teacher at West Point, though he gave that up to become a Nashville songwriting bum.
To Beat the Devil, The Pilgrim: Chapter 33, and Sunday Morning Coming Down are the songs of his that are better with his haggard voice than the many other fantastic singers who covered him. When he was a failure, he was the greatest failed songwriter of the century.
Wife picked this as "Her favorite Song" in 1980. We played it in 2020 for her funeral. My first time to hear it since. Sorry for the bummer, but heartfelt thanx for playing it. "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it ever happened at all."
He is much more than just a Highwayman. Kris Kristofferson is one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century. A Texan, an Army veteran and a Rhodes Scholar. Absolutely brilliant. His duet Help Me Make It Through the Night 🔥 with his ex wife Rita Coolidge are just incredible. Sunday Morning Coming Down makes me cry to this day. Great video guys. ❤❤❤❤❤
Kris is known more as a songwriter than as a singer. But sometimes, his voice is just perfect for the song. You might enjoy watching A Star Is Born, starring Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand. Great movie.
Jay & Amber, you should react to the movie 'A Star Is Born' with Kris and Barbra Streisand on your movie channel!! (even though you've heard Barbra's "Evergreen" from it)
Beyond his voice, he was an incredible song writer of his hits at that of others.... seriously one of the most accomplished writers, singers and personal achievements... Way too under-rated.
LOVE KRIS! I met him and his wife Rita Coolidge in 1978 at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. Me and my friend went down to the Texas Jam in her Vega without a cent! Fun times and I can listen to Kris all day. I love his singin! I just LOVE IT when you guys love the songs! People have often not given Kris the credit he deserves but as a songwriter, a beautiful singer, OMG, I love Kris! Your next Kristofferson MUST be Sunday Mornin Comin Down!!!
one of my favorite musicians. I have been buying vinyl for my grandson as he is 12 and really into music. I just ordered him a Kristofferson album, I told him Kris was his grandpas favorite artist so I hope he enjoys every song on that album. Love Kris' ability to put the emotions into words. Got to hear more - Sunday Morning Coming Down, The Pilgrim, Bobbie McGee, Why Me, etc. Thanks for reacting to his music
I love seeing young people love the songs that I grew up with. This is arguably one of the greatest love songs ever written, and it was written about a love he lost. Check out his other songs from this era, as well as his protest songs. Sunday Morning Coming Down is haunting. We lost an icon- he was a very accomplished scholar, poet, and Soldier before he ever became famous, and he turned his back on everything to pursue the poetry. His family turned their back on him for many years.
My favorite Kris Kristofferson song! Thanks for reacting! Please give a listen to Kris and his wife (at the time) Rita Coolidge sing Help Me Make it Through The Night.
A true Renaissance man. Army brat, singer, songwriter, actor, pilot, Rhodes scholar, PhD. Wrote "Me And Bobby McGee" for his ex-girlfriend Janis Joplin (y'all have the hear the live version The Highwaymen do). Was so desperate to have Johnny Cash record his songs he rented a helicopter to deliver Cash a demo tape at his home-Kris landed it on the man's front lawn! "Sunday Morning Coming Down" was on that tape. Y'all need to check out Aaron Neville's version of his song "For The Good Times".
Barbara McKee was a secretary at the recording studio, who everyone called Bobby, krisoffersen wrote the song using her name, Bobby McKee, the producer thought Mcgee and a better flow to it, so Kris changed it to Bobby Mcgee.
The story I've heard is that while Kris and Janis were dating, he played the song for her, for a birthday present to him, she recorded it, he didn't hear it until after her death, he daid he had to go to a room all by himself and play it 1000 times to be able to do it without breaking down
He was writing songs for everyone else to sing. When the record company wanted him to record one of his own songs. He told them that he wasn't a singer, he was just a song writer .
Kristofferson is easily the most underrated American songwriter in my opinion. He's close to (if not on) Mount Rushmore status for American songwriters for me. He penned incredible songs that have been covered by a wide array of artists in various genres. Kristofferson is truly a living legend.
"Somewhere along the way a lonely bell was ringing. And it echoed through the canyon like the disappearing dreams of yesterday"....SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN

I’ve had a crush on him for decades. He’s such a great songwriter. He bares his soul. I especially like him with Barbra in A Star is Born. It was so sad, though.
Kris was most known for his songwriting. He was considered the golden boy in Nashville. My favorite song he wrote was "Help Me make It Through The Night" for Sammi Smith. A huge country pop crossover fr her. It ranks among the most successful country singles of all time in terms of sales, popularity, and radio airplay. It's a classic song!
His best song writing is when he was stoned👍🏻being a philosopher just made it even better. I got to see him live at a winery in CA at a private event. Amazing!
If you love a good "story song" try Kris Kristofferson's Darby's Castle, it is lesser known, but it is a cautionary tale. I think it is my favorite Kris song. Give it a go.
When you are doing films link this in by watching "A Star is Born", the 1970's version with Kris Kristofferson and Barbera Streisand, it's WONDERFUL, the music, the singing from BOTH of them, is stunning. Saw Kris WITH Barbra in London in 2022, she was brilliant but Kris, who is quite old now, he had to be led on stage and he was struggling to remember words and but Barbra adores him and held his hands and sang with him on his bits when she realised what was happening❤❤❤❤❤
Guys, Kris flew helicopters in Viet Nam for a while. He used to fly with the National Guard or a reserve unit after he moved to Nashville. He took the job as a janitor in order to get his songs heard. He felt one of his songs would be great for Cash and so he found out where John and June lived and flew a helicopter to their estate and landed it in their back yard. They weren't home, but he left the tape with the property manager who gave it to Cash. Kris is a poet as well. He and Johnny, Willie, Waylon and Hank Jr (among others) became a real tight knit group. Kris used to take some good natured ribbing from his buddies about his singing. He showed up for a show with some of the guys and told them he had been sick for a couple days and his throat was still scratchy and his voice was hoarse. Willie asked him how he could tell. When he was on though, he sounded great. Great musical journey with Kris' songs. Try "Help me make it through the Night" or Pilgram chapter 33, or maybe Why Me Lord. I'm leaving a link to a live performance of Why Me Lord, where he tells the story of his inspiration for the song and then sings it. Enjoy!! ruclips.net/video/1tA7E7pbUws/видео.html

I absolutely love this song - one of favourite Kristofferson tracks. Always liked him so much. Got to see him once with the Highwaymen and 4 times solo. Awesome songwriter - his lyrics are brilliant.

ps - FYI - Kris, Johnny, Waylon & Willie were friends from way back!! Willie Nelson almost always included at least 2 of the guys in his yearly "4th of July Picnics which he had from 1972 - usually in or around Austin TX - I was fortunate to attend several of these in the 80's!!!! I always looked forward to going to the epic all day long concerts!!!!
Back in the 70's I saw Kris & Rita Coolidge in Concord Ca, at the Pavillion. Smallish venue in the round. They were fantastic. We were right next to where the entered and exited the stage, so I got some pretty good pics.

His Why Me Lord, one of the most honest songs ever. He starred in the 1976 version of a Star is Born with Barbara Streisand, . Flew helicopters in the Arny, and landed one on Johhny Cash's house to deliver a song he wrote. Also a Rhode Scholar.
Wow! Loved KK since around the late 70s. The Pilgrim and Sunday Morning Coming Down are my favourites but I'll basically listen to anything he sings. 😎
The studio version includes some nice strings. Like many others, I'd love to see a reaction to "Why Me?". The list of huge hits written by Kris and performed by other artists in and around 1970 is truly impressive, and I think you'd really like Ray Price's version of "For The Good Times", Johnny Cash's rendition of "Sunday Morning Comin' Down", and Sammi Smith's "Help Me Make It Through The Night".
His songs make me feel as if I'm either inside his head listening to his thoughts, or having a conversation with a very close friend. (or should I say inside his heart?) Someone else mentioned these but I'll suggest them too "Help Me Make it Through the Night" (the live version with ex-wife, Rita Coolidge), Sunday Morning Come''n Down" and "Why Me Lord?". He's so heartfelt and raw.
One of the greatest singer songwriters of his generation! Tom Paul, and the Glaser brothers did a phenomenal cover of this tune. Keep on bringing it you guys are awesome.!

I’d give it to Townes Van Zandt but Kris is definitely up there. We lost a huge talent and an incredible man
