It’s actually called paver base. It’s the same material you would put down before you lay pavers. It creates a solid base that won’t sink or shift over time when it is compacted. You can purchase bags of it from Home Depot or Lowes. Thank you!
I’m doing something similar, but with much less work. Existing patio, grout missing everywhere, rubbish slabs colour. Paint slabs with epoxy paint, kill remove weeds in between pavers, buy bulk “ grip fill adhesive” (U.K.). Squeeze in between pavers filling large gaps. Cut fake turf into fairly equal strips, doesn’t have to be perfect same size. Gripfill glue down fake grass strips. Bingo! Now just need a few dry days to get started! Love your much more pro job!
Thanks for great video. For the concrete slabs, did you pour those? Or purchase them as is? We're trying to find ways to save on labor costs (we're not DIY'ers).
You can do it using the “dry-pour” method. To build a few small 3x4 concrete slabs, this method works perfectly when is done correctly, saving you a lot money and effort.
Great Video and fabulous idea, just curious how is the turf holding up? I am debating whether to go w/ turf or Large rocks. How is the turf holding up, i know the warranty last about 5-8 yrs. Do you get weeds growing thru the turf?
It is really cool! This was done well before we owned the house but it was a pretty common pattern back in the 80s/90s. They must have used some kind of stamp.
For a more solid base, you want to use decomposed granite. If it’s just small strips like I’ve done in this video, the paver based worked just fine. Definitely don’t use sand though as the stakes won’t hold. Hope this helps!
Looks really nice..what's the measurement of your concrete slab and how much is the gap between them? I am inspired to do something similar on my own :) Also please let me know what paver base/crushed stone you used to fill in.Thank you!
These slabs are 3 ft x 4 ft with 2.5 inches between them. The paver base is from a local wholesale paver company near me but this stuff from Home Depot is pretty much the same thing: www.homedepot.com/p/SAKRETE-0-5-cu-ft-Step-1-Patio-Paver-Base-40100317/205153034 Hope this helps!
I just measured all of the spaces between the concrete and added them all together to find the square inches. Then I just converted that to square feet and added about 10% extra. Hope this helps!
Yes, I put down paver base which you can buy by the bag at home improvement stores. Then I put the weed barrier. Then the concrete slabs. Then more paver base between the slabs and then the artificial turf. For large areas of turf, you would want to use a decomposed granite as a base. No sand is needed.
Where did you get the artificial turf from? Also, if I wanted to do 3x3 slabs, what should the measurements of the form be? Also, I love your videos! They’re very informative! Thanks in advance.
Thank you! We purchased the turf from Costco. They have 3 different grades and we went with the middle grade. For 3x3 slabs you would cut two of your 2x4s to 39” and the other two at 36”. Assemble them so that the interior dimensions are 3x3. Hope this helps!
I’m not sure if anybody could help me but I am trying to install synthetic grass on the sidewalk side by the street I have an area 41 feet by about 4 feet I dug out about 8 inches because I needed the dirt for a big flower box I am trying to get a definitive answer as far as the fill I should use someone told me something called RCA ?
It depends on your goal. RCA stands for Recycled Concrete Aggregate and it definitely could be used as a base material under artificial turf - it's also affordable! If you have pets that will be doing their business there, it may not be the best option as the concrete pieces will absorb odors. Decomposed granite (DG) is considered one of the better options and provides great drainage, but it will be more expensive. For my project, I used paver base which is made up of crushed rock and shells. It worked great for my area because it was just narrow strips that won't really have much foot traffic. If you have a large area, I would suggest one of the other options I listed above. Hope this helps!
4:54 Your dog loving the turf was great! 🐶
He still loves it! We have a bigger section of it in the yard and he rubs all over it after he swims! :)
Great job. I want ask you about the sand that you used. It is a special one for that job, or is any kind of sand. And where to get it. Thanks

Awesome!!!!!! A very nice one-person job. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Just another idea but you could also lay bricks between the caps of you concrete sections... Like what you've done 👍
Absolutely - so many different options. Thanks!
what size are the slabs and how was that installed? custom made slabs onsite? or store bought
They are 3’ x 4’ - I poured them myself. Please check our channel for the full video.
Well thank God for this video,,,,,,saw the short of the pads pour and OCD went insane trying to understand the massive gaps left 😆😂
Haha! :)
@hanover oak do you have a video for how you formed, poured, and finished the concrete slabs?

Hi there. I poured the concrete slabs myself. You can check my channel for the full tutorial. Thanks!

Thank you! Turf is holding up great! We have had a handful of weeds come through but they pull right out.
@@hanoveroak Can you apply weed chemical to the synetic turf to keep the weeds at base?
@@1jbegic I have never needed to do this. I would test a small area to make sure it doesn’t damage the turf. I think it would probably be fine though.
It looks so good would love to have this around our deck area ! Thank you
Thanks!
i wil sugest use this product "Polypropylene Paver Base Panel" on those area instead to create more cousion help alot and use glue instead
Looooveeee the tips and details you added. This really helped me plan my project !
Thanks - glad it helped!
I love your main concrete sunburst pattern! How was this done?
It is really cool! This was done well before we owned the house but it was a pretty common pattern back in the 80s/90s. They must have used some kind of stamp.
More stakes than grass! 😆Jokes aside, this was informative.
👍
Haha very true! Thanks!
Great stuff, how did this project last? can this be done in a day?
Thanks! Installing turf for this size area could definitely be done in a day.
What’s the size of the concrete slabs? What’s the spacing between them as well? Looking to do something for my yard. Looks great!
They are 4’ x 3’ with 5.5” of space between.
Hey great video. I’m actually finished the pavers and now to install the artificial grass. Should I use paver base gravel or sand?

Thanks for your reply. Keep up the good work. Will send you end result. Thanks again. Next outdoor lighting
Is crushed fine concrete good as I'm doing exactly like you are.
You did an incredible job Sir!
Thank you!
This looks lovely, Is there any alternative to paver base?
Thank you! Yes, you could also use decomposed granite.
Can water permeate the paver base ?
Absolutely - it drains great!
❤your video .what tape of send did u put under it ?
We used compacted paver base. It’s made up of crushed rock and shells.
This is awesome! Question….how much concrete (how many bags) did you use all together?
Thank you! For all eight 3’ x 4’ slabs at 3.5” thick it took about 60 bags of 60lb concrete.
And what was the total size area you covered with those 8 slabs?
This is beautiful and very similar to what I want to do to my patio. Do you mind sharing the cost of the entire project?
Thank you! The materials cost for the entire project, including the concrete slabs, was slightly over $1000.
Do you rhink this method would work for a driveway?
Absolutely! I would go 5-6 inches deep on the slab to handle the extra weight of a vehicle.
Thinking about it too!
Pls what size is the pavers and where can i get them. Also the price of that size
We actually poured concrete slabs for this. Check out our channel for the full video!
Great video 🤘🏻💯
Thanks!
❤ love your video mate 🏁🇦🇺💚💛

@@hanoveroak That 2.5" space between the pavers doesn't seem right. I think its 5.5 inches between the pavers and 2.5" between the forms.

3/4” crushed or smaller for pets, DG holds in odors also.

doesnt weed still grow through it?
Occasionally but not too many and they easily pull out.
Amazimg
Thank you!
River rocks then sprayed with mulch glue would have created a more blended look.
It's all about preference. I love the green look of it, plus the mulch glue doesn't last long. After heavy rain, you have to re-apply
This video slabs! :)
I would of dine the space as a 2 x 4 and then taken a 2x4 a d cut down it after measuring the with with the 2x4 much easier
I needed as much space as possible, so I went as big as I could with the slabs :)
How
wouldn’t the sand drain over time?
No sand used here. It's all paver base which is small crushed rock and shells. I compacted it before installing the turf. It's not going anywhere. :)
@@hanoveroak I’m going to try this out then i already poured the patio and walk way now just needing to do the turf
@@LeonidasD828 Awesome! Feel free to reach out if you have anymore questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
You should be used 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 inches of level 2 base gravel then adding decomposed granite over it.
I like your Rolex
You are supposed to used non galvanized staples because rust is what hoods them in place.
Instead of the turf, I would fill it up with concrete.Just my opinion.
Overkill on the stakes!
Overkill is definitely better than underkill on a project like this. Don’t want that turf lifting anywhere. ;)
