Starting a New Capital City: How to Build A DOWNTOWN In Cities Skylines! Let's Play Coniferia EP21

  • We're continuing the brand new city in the Cities: Skylines Region of Coniferia! With Major Infrastructure being covered for now, it's finally time to start placing the very first buildings! I often find it very tricky to start building a Downtown, as it feels like a very important part of any city, and one which might define many future developments - so, I share my thought processes along the way and the things that I consider before I start picking and placing buildings.
We place down a mix of residential, commercial, and offices, getting a substantial part of the new city's downtown developed - before rounding up with a quick park in front of the Coniferia regional capitol!

14:12 Beginning the development of Downtown - with procedural objects usage to shape buildings to our liking - placing down residential, commercial and office towers, new and old!
39:11 Building the central park that cuts through Downtown and leads up to the regional capitol building

49:02 Final cinematics of the highway traffic and developed Downtown
    - What's the rationale behind this project:
What happens if a washed-up-used-to-be-RUclipsr gathers a bunch of "generic" looking assets (though mostly inspired by Australian / Canadian cityscapes) with the hopes of creating a Cities: Skylines region full of towns and cities that both look realistic and are inspired by Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, while at the same time don't really replicate any one particular style? No idea, let's find out.
Join me in this Cities: Skylines modded gameplay / let's play / timelapse series as we expand the region, and build new infrastructure, highways, public transit, industrial pockets, NIMBY-neighbourhoods, sprawling suburbs and bustling downtowns. And of course, use tress excessively to cover up any imperfections!

In this episode we're placing the FIRST BUILDINGS, getting a BIG chunk of the New Capital City's Downtown developed - wooohoo! I also try my best to carefully explain my thought process when building a Downtown.. Sorry if it dragged out a bit 😅😅
Remember that there is a Q&A in the description for the most common questions! And if you just can't get enough of Coniferia, there's hundres of additional screenshots over at my Patreon 📸📸📸 www.patreon.com/infrastructurist

In the hills behind the city, I think you should build some low density suburbs, maybe like Hollywood Hills or a similar place.
Another idea: have a railway line go through the city with multiple stations at important areas (population centres, tourist attractions, etc.), somewhat like a metro service (but with regular trains, of course). This would improve the accessibility of the city, decrease traffic, and also just look very quite unique.

In the blocks between the train tracks and the water, in the new city, you should build an older warehouse district turned hipster neighborhood. The area along the tracks would've historically been very industrial.

Great start! It is really starting to look like a decent, actually somewhat walkable city. I cannot wait for the next episode. Also just like you said, the bus hub should probably be right in front of the train station, so people dont have a hard time transfering to bus. A lot of cities have it like that. You could just add another bus only road next to the already existing one in front of the station, it would look really nice and be quite realistic. That wouldnt even make a huge gap in the skyline. I imagine it would make sense to have the city be quite dense, or make it look that it is building new skyscrapers, because it is pretty small, for how important it is.
Nice job Infra, even after a pretty long break, you still manage to build beautiful cities! :)

And Another suggestion is to make the Highway/Expressway elevated rather than the sunken it will look amazing as it is in the mountainous region. you can take reference from the Atlantic Ocean Road, Norway. and also if you can consider making the Railway line with in total of 6 platforms rather than with 4 Platforms (4 Platforms are terminal for the capital city bound trains terminating here and 2 Platforms for the further going railway line). So what my idea for the railway line is to make one another railway platform along with the current station as that line is going further into the city and crossing it on the other hand and entering into the underwater tunnel and get onto the other island as you mentioned( for the highway) in the last video you made while you were letting us know the planning of the further side on the island on right side from the capital building. Thanks.

Hello Infrastructurist, As per my imagination I would like to suggest you some of the ideas like that you can reconsider the planning of the heights of the building in the downtown area as the main governor's/capital building is placed a bit further down the avenue from the harborfront/beachfront. as the tall buildings are covering the view from both the point of views(from beachfront and from the governor's building too). I suggest to make the lower height building's or touristy places infront of the Capital building's avenue that are going towards the beachfront/harborfront or maybe re-positioning of the Capital building to the higher place on the mountain from where the capital building can have the view of the whole city just like the museum in the Los Angeles have or even take inspiration from the India's RASHTRAPATI BHAVAN & RAISINA HILLS Layout till the INDIA Gate( A stretch of 1KM). because this looks a bit odd(personal opinion) as the tall buildings has covered the view of both the harborfront and the capital building.

I get that you don't want any building to stick out, but I think it would be cool to have one building stick out slightly just to have a centrepiece in your downtown. Maybe a slender building that's 65-75 metres tall?

    • @Infrastructurist
      @Infrastructurist  Год назад +1

Hi Vojta - a big welcome to the channel and community! 😀 That is a great suggestion - and actually something I considered when building the Downtown Core. I think I refrained from it due to fears of it sticking out, or clearly making the city much more prominent than the City of Pine Harbour.
With that said, it's clear that in this capital city, land is costly, so developers are incentivized to build up - which means that as Pine Harbour and the capital city grows, we will definitely see some investors come forth with plans for buildings above 55+ meters - and the range you suggest (65-75) is a really good start when that time comes.
Thank you for the suggestion 👍

I also agree with an underground station. Could be like a Grand Central Station in NYC asset type. Would look great downtown.

Hi Ethan - you and me both. Could be cool with some small pockets of hollywood-hills vibes. Where rich people go to look at a sea of lights 😊

Why don't you do more speed build, I think I can see the progress better and then I can say more about it.
You build a nice city. :D

This is a really nice downtown, but I do have to ask, is it possible to build a downtown in Cities: Skylines without a large freeway nearby. I've noticed that most cities in the game that many creators build have large highways running through their cities, like many NA cities or some kind of Dubai monstrosity. Is it possible to build city centers that feel more natural and walkable?

I'm pretty sure highways aren't a requirement at all for city centers, many cities in Europe don't have highways going through their city centers at all, as the highways are usually outside of the city I believe. And they also look pretty bustling. I think Akruas' Asturis is a great example of a massive city center not having a highway go through it, as instead a massive train line runs through it.

I don't want to be that guy but I think that, at least in what was built this episode, there is not nearly enough parking available

Where I'm from, parking downtown is mostly street parking or an underground parking lot accessible through buildings. Very rarely there are carparks.

downtown is nice, but I dont think the style of the central park fits. It is too symmetrical/regular, kinda soviet style, however downtown is more mixed. It would look better with irregular placement of trees, bushes. Bus terminal near the train station would look good. But I think the park definitely doesnt fit.

I think you should call the island "Gran Island". Sort of sounds like grand, men du ved, gran i stedet for Pine like Pine Harbor. Also your train asset has included bus stops, no need for the other terminal.
