I'm walking down the aisle to this song in July. This is one of the few songs I've ever heard that captures what it means to be in love and to be committed to someone.
the song is deeper than you can imagine...it is of 3 persons...Townes Van Zandt, was testing his faith...the "lady" is the third person...come on people....don't you see, true music, is passion, for our Creator and Saviour
What an amazing songwriter, being a recovering alcoholic I am truly amazed at this man's abilities to write and play. He is truly an awsome person, and I am glad to know of him and his story.
Lowed like a cow? Sorry man, that’s not one of the lyrics. The line is “lady’s with me now, since I showed her how, to lay her lily hand in mine-Loop and Lil (“Loop” and “Lil” were Townes’ pet parakeets) agree, she’s a sight to see, and a treasure for the poor to find”
Just woke up and have to go to school in a few minutes. Starting the day with Townes Van Zandt is probably the best wasy... Just feeling free and happy!
"I'd swim the seas for to ease your pain." He's got that down home country vernacular that is unique to genuine musicians from east Texas. Beautiful lyrics Mr. van Zandt.
I miss Townes. I am so glad to see this amount of his work on line. Thank you for adding this. This is a lovely version. I love to hear him sing his own songs. Just a note: I was trying to tell someone about Townes years ago. I thought they would have known him. The person said, "Oh, you mean the opera singer?" I will always remember that. Don't know what Townes would have thought, but hope it wouldn't have offended him.
@midnightrebellion01 You can take the child from Tennesse, you can't take the Tennesee from the child. I have lived in Australia for 38 years, and my okie accent is like I never left home, and I truly love this song. The line he commented on Lowed Like a Cow, that is when a COW calls the bull, wants to mate, so he took her hand and showed her how, to a country boy that line is pure shakespeare, no one else would get it unless you knew a bit about cattle. He is for real.
There is an actor who was in westerns in the 50s and 60s who looked just like Townes. Does anyone know who that actor is? For me, it's Townes Van Zandt and Marty Robbins, then everyone else. Townes lyrics are more abstract than Marty's, but both are so amazing.
@fatchuk812 who can sing the song any better than the one who wrote it? Townes' heart is where the lyrics and the SINGIN always came from...I would much rather listen to the songwirtiers than some painted up media darling lip synching somebody elses material...what an insult!

How’s it been these last 9 years?
Such a gorgeous song.
One of those timeless works of art.
A gut punch of the finest variety 💔😎
Poor ol towns. You can really tell alcohol and age had taken its toll. My favorite poet to ever scribe. Rest in peace towns.
For those of you that write, or for those of you that just appreciate music, listen about how the song came to be. Amazing...
One word comes to mind AWESOME!!!!!
Such a beautiful song from a man who sings from his soul. I hope you are at peace, dear Townes. Thank you for all your magnificent songs.
How many of us have More than a wish we could say thee this
Imagine getting a private show from Townes… 😭
Always one of my favorites from Townes. What a treasure....the song, the performer, and the recording.
This song brings me to my knees.

I love the line lowed like a cow and I'm not from TN, but I think it's perfect for the song. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Josh Morningstar He does state, those were the original lyrics, and that he had to change that one line..✌️
God bless you townes. i hope you finally found the peace you so well deserved.
Just woke up and have to go to school in a few minutes.

Brilliance and beauty of the human spirit. Thank you Townes.

Greatest of them all
If the explanation for the words is true, then that is amazing. We will never know though, sadly. Food for thought. That's for sure. Gerry Farry.
Townes is such a poet. He always speaks to me.
that is amazing .most of us just have stupid dreams at night at best.
What I want to know is ,who are the 10 A-holes that disliked this? Love Townes and love this song.

Terrible
Oh to be in the room when this was happening!
What a song! I love it so much! Thanks Townes from Germany
Thank you for posting this. And now we know and have witnessed that cows love music and are very gentle loving when you sing to them.
Thank you i love townes, and I really appreciate that little touch of context.
thank you Townes!!
Ultimate - after all has sung, it is morning, and only townes..... can capture it. :)
we needed townes
My favorite version, by far...giggling at his dream-state composition narrative gives way to a deferential sort of vulnerability

KILLER TUNE !!! Beautifull melody
@dogwaine paul macca heard "yesterday" in his sleep and wrote it down in the morning on piano!!
not so, I think yesterday is a poignant lyric and a stunningly gorgeous melody - it's a soulful and touching song@Marten Dekker
Like a lot of things, doesn't matter when as long as you find him
Beautiful Song

Can't thank you enough you precious gem for this!!! : )))
I love townes
Townes is a great songwriter.
Thank you for posting this, lapislazuli42.
Oh How I wish what this man understood what he did for country music. Sad days
A poet interprets his thoughts and words...
while picking guitar.
Yes

How cool is he
Just heard this song.im drinking again.
God rest his soul -- in the next life,
as it never did rest in this ….
a good track
Townes van Zandt, John Prine, Blaze Foley produced by the same country that produced Reagan. Bush, Cheney and the like, go figure.
💯%❤️🔥
he was notorious for tall tales.
that's van Zandt for you :)
imagine if you still drank, you'df prob appreciate it even more and then play something similar
no one comes close to Townes......
whoa he wrote a song in his sleep? awesome
steve von till really covers this one great. original is nice, too.
there's a longer version of this story on the Austin Pickers version
Anybody knows the story behind this private concert? Why and how it happened and stuff?
@steele917 I think he is working on my soul now...even though I am a lost 'cause he still keeps trying to help me.
The man was a Texan.
does anybody use thumbpicks? if so please let me know what they think off using them
@McGrenzer i know, right? that's like saying Lightnin' Hopkins wasn't a very good guitar player.
1:21 to 1:45 ... sigh
Sounds a lot like "Would You Lay With Me (In a Field Of Stone) by David Allan Coe
Townes released this song in 1972 while Coe recorded his song in 1973.
Yes, I always thought that!
I hear snoring in my sleep ...should I record that ?
@Devaprakash777
Your reply was irresponsible and meant to illicit a reply. So was mine. We're even. Think before you post trash and I will too.

Too many musicians have traded their souls to heroin. It sure has made for some amazing music throughout the years though.
