Townes is a bottomless treasure chest of fingerstyle gems.
I adore this song and you've sang and played it beautifully.
In my opinion, the greatest love song ever written. I'm glad you mentioned Live at the Old Quarter. That's the album that got me into Townes and along with the Silver Jews American Water, my favorite album to listen to on a long drive. For those who haven't seen it, the documentary on Townes called Be Here to Love Me is essential viewing. Thank you for the video and I'm looking forward to learning this one.
What a perfect pairing for driving! I believe DCB's original working title for the American Water album was 'The Late Great Silver Jews' in a bit of a nod to Townes' 1972 release!
Thanks so much I had to play it really slow for about 3 days but eventually got the hang of it.
I like the way you don’t go into too much detail about every note so it forces me to listen by ear more rather than just breaking down everything while not listening to the little details in the song.
Townes , Guy Clarke and Steve Earle the greatest folk singer songwriters of generation! cheers mate , great lesson 🤟
There is a special place in my heart for Townes. Thank you Adrian. You are the biggest match in musial taste of all the people I know.
It's recently been gnawing at me that I've never really spent time with TVZ's work. This is a great stimulus to do that. Loved your performance and looking forward to playing it!
Just learned about Townes in Dylan's Philosophy of Song. What a legacy. Thanks for your lesson.
Ah, didn't know he was included in that! It'a on my to read list, will hopefully get round to it over the Xmas break.
Big fan of Townes. Great choice. Brilliant.
Love Townes, one of the best to ever do it
Couldn’t agree w you more re his place in the songwriting pantheon. If you ever do another one, please consider Rex’s Blues. The documentary mentioned by one of the other commenters is fantastic.
As a keen guitarist myself I normally come to this channel to listen to pointers to some of the smiths songs I’m looking to learn. Today, wow, what a song. I absolutely love it. Learning this one today and I hope to add it to my live repertoire to spread the word.
I've always admired the guitar, vocal melody, and harmony of this song. I can't make much sense of the 70's pop culture lyrics. But musically, Townes really captured something here. The Don Willians/Emmylou Harris version is the one I'm most familiar with.
Beautiful!
Adrian- once again you pick and amazing song and artist. I think your eclectic taste in music is outstanding!
I am also giving myself a backhanded compliment. Since I like all the artist you choose... thanks
Thank you so much for doing a tutorial on TVZ, he was an amazing guitarist and it’s hard for us beginners to imagine how to start learning just by listening to him play
Great the way you mix up the lessons! Beautiful song.
Amazing, TY
Terrific! great singing!. Thanks for doing this song. Esp this version.
Fantastic
Outstanding! Thanks for sharing
Great song beautifully presented and explained. Thank you.
Great player ,teacher ..and your singing is very nice too..thanks for your lessons
Oh... Splendid ! Great playing and vocals ! Thank you Adrian 😉
Thank-you!
This is the first time RUclips has shown me one of your videos in over a year, despite being a subscriber and regular watcher, hopefully now rectified. Great tune!
Thank you for representing Townes so well
THANK YOU.
Beautiful! Thank you!. There's a really nice detail to the turnaround where the final D starts with a hammer-on on the B string into a D7 shape (played together with the D string) then into the D shape (ie the 3rd fret on the B string). Its quite subtly played but really adds to the incredible tenderness of the song.
I love it! Thank you my friend!
Absolutely gorgeous.
Beautiful song and you do it so well.
Been following you since yr Shergold ‘endorsement’ - but wow… this takes the channel to another level… just… beautiful. Thank you.
Thank you
nice performance and great lesson! thank you.
Great lesson.
I've been playing this one for years. Great job breaking it down, Adrian!
Your musical taste is spot on!
Beautiful timing sir. Thank you

For those who luv TVZ check out "Neil Vincent Emerson" a young man who picked up the TVZ flag and is carrying it proudly
Check out TVZ's "Rear View Mirror" - live collection with some beautiful accompaniments. "To Live is to Fly" is a favorite.
Now I want singing lessons as well
Can you have a go at 'As Cold As Can Be In An English Sea' by Cardiacs please?
Fantastic tutorial I am lucky enough to have the same acoustic guitar. Can you tell me what size and make of strings your using.regards Dai

😎🎙🎸✅️
Great lesson, beautiful picking.
Is ur guitar a Martin 00015 ?
Thank you
Seems no one knows exactly what TVZ did in the 1975 live session nevertheless this tutorial is one of the most accurates I've seen ,unfortunately without a TAB is hard to follow. Thanks a lot.
There is tab on Adrian's Patreon page (pay what you wish).
Townes, Prine, Dylan. In that order.
@@arlo2203 that’s a shame, a troubled genius. I’m glad we had him.
lesson start at 4,:30
We have all the same music tastes
Loop and Lil were parakeets
Another great lesson on an old hero of mine, cheers man. Any chance of you breaking down a song by the B-52s original guitarist, Ricky Wilson at some point in the future? His playing and approach to guitar was amazing (Private Idaho being a classic example)...
Personally I prefer 'No place to Fall' which has a similar lyric theme
If you manage this pattern you will also be able to play most of Steve Earle's songs, for example Goodbye, Pilgrim and My Old Friend the Blues. Although Earle usually plays the D chord with the F# in the bass.
Townes Van Zant..... 😎 🆒️ 😎 he had the best quote. "I'm going to play a melody of my hit".
Thank you
