    I'm a year and a half late for this video but thank you! One thing I've noticed is that there are so many RUclips videos and before golf articles on grip, stance, swing plane and on and on that don't really assist with PLAYING the game. I have finally realized that course management is way more important than getting an extra 10 yards on my driver. Tips like quit trying hero shots, laying up, taking more club and just getting out of trouble is way more valuable and shaves way more strokes off your score than getting a few extra yards distance.
    One of my biggest faults is trying to get it as close to the green as possible that leaves me in awkward distances like 30 yards where if I was using more course management I would give myself an 80-100 yard shot with a wedge which I can hit way more often than I can a 30 yard pitch. Laying up in front of water instead of trying to hit the perfect shot that will just barely carry a hazard is something that I have never honestly considered. I'm normally in the 95-105 range when I play and looking back, most of my errors are poor course management. I had knee surgery a few months ago and haven't been able to play for the past 2 years because of knee pain. That's starting to go away and I can't wait to get back out on the course and apply all the lessons I've learned about playing smart.
    Thank you so much Matt. You and other channels that give advice on how to manage your way around the course are invaluable.

    v. good useful advice. #5 - i've found coming relatively late to golf (40) that your brain is programmed from other sports to automatically see the target (hole) and what's in front of it, as you're instinctively seeing a direction of travel from you to the target (hole).

    My most common disaster shot (here in northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin) is hitting my tee shot into the trees (LOTS of trees on the courses here). Jail... dead! Most of my friends hit driver, and when I hit 5-word or hybrid off the tee, they ask "Why are you hitting that 'baby' club?" 😂
    I would rather play short and out of the fairway.

    • @Mattfryergolf
      @Mattfryergolf  4 года назад

      Yep out of the fairway has it's advantages! If you can work on the driver in the mean time and get that straightened up then youre on to a real winner!

    Have to say Matt I’ve watched a few of your hints and tips videos and they’re some of the most helpful videos I’ve seen for game improvement. Clear and concise and a real issue for golfers at all levels.
    I would say 3 out of 5 with the hero shot on par 5s with a 3wd or going for glory out of the rough and the aiming for the flag and not the largest part of the green are what cost me with the occasional wedge skull that bullets across the green.
    One of your other videos I seen recently really helped me with knock down wedge distances and using clock positions. Keep up the good word Matt!

    Great video Matt, I know this is a couple of years old now, but still so true. Another key one for me is to 'Take your medicine'. If you hit a bad shot and end up in trouble, don't try the hero shot and aim for that 2 foot gap between a couple of trees, get back on the short stuff as easy as possible and don't cost yourself yet another stroke.

  • @mal2ksc

    It seems to me that a general principle of more than one of these is _know where to miss_ and then move your aim a bit in that direction. Your average shot will still be close enough, but your bad shots won't be punished as much. You do lose the benefit of a really good shot, but if you hit those a lot then you probably don't need to shade much.

  • @robertrenekerjr6819
    @robertrenekerjr6819 2 года назад

    In other words, we need to play more conservatively in order to avoid big numbers and lower our score. Reading a book that Ray Floyd published in 1998 on scoring and that is one of his themes. He also talks about how amateurs often under club on their approaches to greens (and on par 3) and consistently end up short of the hole. That goes to shot #5.

    Great video for course management especially for stroke play tournaments where the disaster seems to be always come in play. This video makes complete sense on paper. However, this video doesnt seem to work for me when Im on the course. Golf is very mental and just having fun and playing freely seems to result in the best scores than overthinking under pressure. I pulled off shot #1 this year 240 yard shot 3 wood with my buddies and nearly made the eagle putt. Ive also taken the safe play in touraments for #1 and #3 and still make double. You are right on paper with the #4 putting, however i seem to make more 2-3fts by just going back of cup, than giving putt too much attention, overthinking the putt and missing under pressure. With tip #5, you are correct on paper again, however most courses ive played the trouble is always long of the green, not short. Center of the green is my general mentality when looking at distance/accuracy.

    Hey Tuck,(sorry I can ya fryer Tuck)
    Got a question..I just bought a shaft online and it has a GP MCC+4 standard grip with 3 wraps of tape underneath so close to midsize... It is the best a club has ever felt in my hand BUT I have small hands, cadet medium, so I'm wondering should I use it..I have always used standard and honestly never felt completely comfortable but I'm a +2hc so I just never tinkered with grip size but bring an ex professional baseball player the thicker grip just feels natural to me... Should I test it out or do you think my hands are too small to even waste time on it

    For me? ALWAYS under clubbing on approach. I've got to get into the habit of clubbing to the back-of-green yardage. Most courses, the trouble is almost always at the front.

      @@Mattfryergolf I've done them all. As a 26 handicap now I try and keep it on the fairway and work on my short game.

    In my mind, the first mistake is to have used the driver on the first shot in your first exemple. 4 iron, 7 iron and wedge would have been more conservative but safer.

    10 feet past the hole is the same as 10 feet short.

    Matt real quick I hit my 56 wedge 110yds I hit my 5iron 210-215 driver 270-280 but I struggle with my 9,8,7 irons with filling in the gaps 6 iron is even short at about 180-185. Long irons wedges I’m good but those mid irons are thought for me to get the distance to match the rest of my game.
    Any tips

      Without seeing tuff to say, could be scooping slightly in to impact. Also the loft/gaping of the lofts could be out due to manufacture tolerances
