I've read all of John's books on Hunting Pressured Whitetails. They've changed my hunting techniques on Public Land in MI and have been very successful.
I have hunted more than one public place where there were big bucks near the road. One in Maryland I never could sneak in. It was right behind a DNR building in a small patch of brush with a couple fence rows leading into it. Others were where houses backed up to the public land. There was a swamp on an old farm with open fields that went for hundreds of yards in either direction. I have often seen deer in very open woods bedded on a slightly higher spot, especially on windy days.
Public ground is very tough to hunt. I hunt exclusively public ground in PA which makes it very difficult to kill a buck on camera but when you do it is very rewarding.
You may be too close to a spot that is easily accessed from major populated areas. I rifle hunt where I live and rarely see another hunter unless going in or out. 20 years ago it was a hunter every 50 yards, if that far. We are not exactly over run with deer, but there is still some here.
Old Goat there are small communities but closes town is 30 miles away. It’s a big piece though and gets a lot of pressure. I might start driving further away in search of some more off the beaten path stuff.

I go where it’s too far for lazy hunters. Most hunters I’ve seen do not like to put actual work into hunting. If you can drive into the hunting area, you’re in the wrong area.

I witness the easy, open access areas while hunting wma's. It's true people flock to them. I usually bury my self where nobody else wants to go or its to far of a walk, thick' or wet for most and have success.
If the public land has easy access points like almost all do your wasting your time (if your looking for a mature buck) it aint easy but you got to find public lands that allow you to get far away from the hoards, there are not many of them
On public you better get close to bedding area and wind right direction for the big bucks
Not true at all. I killed 20 big buck not even close to the bedding.
If you just want to kill a doe/fawn/just a deer for the freezer, what's the best type of place to be? Would a large opening in the woods be good? And also.....can't scout can only blind hunt....
That was awesome are you the guy that did an article I think 2013 rut issue deer and deer hunting. Rainy day bucks? I hunt the rain but I must be hunting the wrong spots? Only had action twice in the rain were I hunt, I always thought rainy days would be great days too
How do you find primary scrape areas and fruit trees on public land? I he been very unsuccessful at locating either of those especially here in Michigan. Ohio there was more scrape activity. I don't think I've ever fond a Rouge fruit tree on public land either. I've always kept my eyes peeled for persimmon and apples but never found any other than a few really unhealthy crab apple trees which I think we're native . But any tips on those 2 things would be appreciated.

You're flat out wrong about mature bucks never being out in open fields and open hardwoods. True they don't walk out in open areas as much as the thick hardwoods. But never will they ever walk out to open areas during legal light. Not always. Even on public ground I see bucks from yearling to mature age bucks out to open fields to feed during legal light. If the does are out in the open areas, So will the big bucks. Success is all about patience.
Just depends on your area. If the area get's a lot of human traffic during the hunting season, chances are the Mature Bucks won't frequent them during daylight hours. Why would a Mature Buck access this same area when he can do it in the Cover of Darkness? Not saying Mature Bucks won't visit during daylight hours, just depends on hunting pressure.

100 percent talking about Michigan or any other highly pressured places, if you see bucks in your area walking around fields in daylight, then my guess is you are hunting leased land or are fortunate enough to live somewhere where there’s not many hunters
@@kylemurray7086 Once the corn are freshly picked. Deer will walk out in the fields feeding more than staying in the woods. I hunted public land too. I've seen some nice bucks out in the fields before in pressured public land. Yes majority of the big bucks stay in the woods. Common sense deer are slightest to their stomachs. There will be a time thell walk out during the day in the fields feeding..
@@meateaterwhitetail7291 I wanna hunt in your area then lol I hunt in a place where by the time the corn comes down there’s a truck in every pull off spot on the road for miles and miles and rifle opener you can literally see the orange specks in the trees everywhere, it’s like D-day for these deer around here lol
Public areas I have hunted all my life all have shooting lanes cut out. That's bullshit if you believe no one cuts a branch thats in their way.

ive cut shooting lanes and trimmed trees on public land for over 35 yrs so what at least i never cut down well maybe a few bigger trees but any way if i need a shot at a trail its getting cut i dont care what the cost im sorry
meanwhile, logging companies kill more trees on the wmas and national forrests than they take out. compared to what we could ever imagine on doing as one person. and they do a shitty sparce job at replanting

I find myself tripping a lot and grab branches and saplings to help break my fall. All seem to snap out of my way.... guess it's meant to be
