- Opening day is right around the corner here in Michigan! After 9 months of work, getting your property ready, it's finally time to get back into a tree. But is it really time to push into your favorite stands? Most of the time, probably not.
In this video we will go over a few temptations you should try to resist in order to keep the deer on your property pressure free and the movement predictable well into the season. Although we take a more conservative approach to the start of the hunting season, we are still in the woods, so we'll also discuss when and where we prefer to hunt in early October.

Firmly believe in the baro playing a part in deer movement . Can't remember where i heard it from but this season for the first time with my reveal cam proves the point with it's stat feature and between 29.75 to 30.25 and above see the most movement by 100's . 30.00 and above have the most . Everyone has there own way but maybe something to think about and it works for me ....good luck this season everyone

I agree with you and your techniques are spot on. The only thing I’m wondering if you have seen is pre -frontal deer movement. It appears they know when the bad weather is coming and want to fill there bellies
That's a great point and yes I have noticed that. Not as significant as post-front, but there's definitely an increase in movement / feeding just before the storm hits.

Nice! Sometimes those older bucks are still locked in on those summer patterns in the early part of the season. Great job recognizing and capitalizing on them!
Awesome Informational video as always. For me, rising Barometric Pressure - Post Cold Front makes it a pleasure to be outside and I would think that this would translate into the same for deer and other wildlife.
Thanks! There has to be something. I know a lot of people that swear they can feel the pressure change after a front moves through in a knee they had surgery on or if they have a bad back. I also talked to the nurses when my kids were born on whether they thought barometric pressure acted as a trigger to induce labor, the ones I talked to believed it was. So if we can feel the change and like you said it's more comfortable to move around, it has to translate to wildlife as well.

It's been so dry. 3 years ago we were flooded, this year no rain whatsoever. Hopefully we get a little more rain soon.

Great video,far as the barometric pressure,I 100 percent think it affects movement,I do alot of bads fishing and it plays a big factor,and ask anyone who has had surgery,my mom has and it affects her back at times
I'm with you. I know too many people with joint issues and they say they can tell when a front moves through just based on how their knee or back feels. Too much anecdotal evidence out there for there not to be some correlation between high pressure and deer movement.

I’m new to hunting and I have never seen a deer in the wild. I just bought a Benelin R1 chambered in .308 I’m currently trying to get some practice at a gun range to familiarize myself with my rifle and scope. How would you suggest I proceed getting into the hunting community? I live in Boston, MA.

animals are like us we don't want to move around too much when it's hot n muggy we prefer it to be comfortable and when it gets cooler and colder especially after a hot muggy patch of weather right
I think you're on to something! That's why we tend witness more rutting activity when it's cold as opposed to when it's really warm.
@@whitetailevolution don't get me wrong when it gets like super cold then its the same we want to move to where we can find some sort of warmth even if its by just a few degrees or some sun light and less wind so the animals do the same thing

You’re looking at we humans as if we are in our natural state. If you lived in the woods and knew nothing about A/C you wouldn’t have near the issue with the heat.

Im ready for Missouri opening day September 15th. First year bow hunting.
Otherwise in our area (WV) the morning hunting is more successful during the early season.
I disagreed about early season hunting. I do not know about your area, but in our area (Northern WV) the deer movement in later summer and early fall is mostly during daylight time. But then 2-3 week after the season started (Sep 24 this year) they completely switch to night time movement. I guess they starting feeling hunting pressure and change their movement pattern. It is just my experience. It becomes better during rut, but it is still mostly night time movement. So, I prefer to get my archery bag limit in the first 2-3 weeks.
Excellent video. Bow season starts this week for us. Only bad news is the bucks that started coming in to my plots about mid august havent been seen for about 9 days now. Im freaking out as to where they have gone! And im in big woods. Ag fields dont exist around here. Very confusing pattern change
I’m on the other end of that, I haven’t got any pictures of bucks all summer, so I hoping they are transitioning. No Ag fields around.
Late summer / early fall buck dispersal is something that we all experience and it can be frustrating especially if you have had them in your food plots recently. I wouldn't panic just yet, there's a good chance that they are breaking up from their bachelor groups and finding their fall core areas, hopefully on or near your property. They also don't move much during daylight this time of year. Another possibility is since you are in a big woods setting, they could have shifted their attention away from food plots and on to early dropping acorns as this is a preferred food source this time of year.
Like Chris, we hunt one area that we don't get many pictures of older bucks until mid October when they move back into their fall ranges. The pattern each year is fairly consistent but it does always make me nervous when we don't have any pictures of shooters in the early season. Just need to stay patient and try not to bugger up the area constantly checking the cards.
Hey, I've heard something and it kinda makes sense to me as I've seen it happen as I've tried this but idk if I should be doing this or not. So we use to be able to bait. Just 5gal bucket but as it stands today , no baiting and that's fine with me however...I have 3 kids and I'm a single dad . No mom!. So....during the day sometimes I can't get out to the woods and I find myself with free time after they go to bed. So I was told to go into woods at night , that it won't spook deer as they may just jump a few times stop and look back as we use flash lights right. So if it was daytime that same deer would run like hell to get outta there. So I was told was to move if I have to at night and not during the day. As there is less chance to spook out a buck. However my prob with this way of thinking is most mature bucks move at night and if I'm out in the woods at night time my chances go up of running into said buck and jumping it . But back to what has happened so far is that deer I've come across has not run outta there like a bat outta hell but rather acting confused and not all that worried about me really. So is it a good idea if I have to do something at one of my many blinds , to do it at night time with flashlight or normally and do it during the day
My hunting land is 50ac some simi thick but my land butts up to very thick old clear cut bucks come out run the edge l got rubs all over that edge l should hunt afternoons catch Buck coming out and got lots of turkey to 😊👍
I hunt small public parcels it seems random to see deer because you never know when or where someone went the day before or day of.
What do you do when you have more big food than small plots. I hunt areas with massive ag fields and alot of wet hardwoods that hold water. Lots of big timber but just patches between fields few hundred yards. Deer are bedding in these remote areas. So how would you hunt that given youre either going to hunt near bedding or main food source. There is no inbetween

12:32 high pressure means less rain. Not sure it really affects movement so much as it does hunters
I put in multiple stands one for early season , I won't hunt till mid October and only evenings for a week and a half but if warm won't go
Do you want to go hunting? Or would you rather go whitetail SHOOTING?? Best tips to go whitetail SHOOTING... well established salt lick, clip on thermal, obsidian 9mm and 350 legend with suppressor rounds. Head out about midnight, finished by 12:05a. Meat for the freezer

Hey Jason that's a great question but without seeing the setup it's tough to give solid advice. From what you described, we hunt something similar with a large swamp in the middle of a wide open hay field. We try to always be on the downwind side of that swamp, catching the the deer as they move in and out through a few ditches. So depending on the wind, we'll rotate around that field to reduce our chances of them catching our scent.
I am a new subscriber from here in Maine. I too have a youtube channel "Maine North Woods Hunter". What is your opinion on hunting in Hill and Mountain country where the wind seems to be constantly going in every direction?
The wind will move through every area differently so it's best to try to figure out how it will move through your area before you hunt it for the first time. I like to do this in the offseason with milkweed seeds. Set up in your stand with a NW wind, drop the seeds and see where the wind is pulling them to ensure the wind is moving through how you expect it to. The last thing you want to happen is get to your stand and figure out the NW wind is actually SE in that spot.. In hill country you have the advantage of using the thermals, which will lift your scent upwards in the morning and pull in down in the evening. Make sure to keep this in mind when choosing your stand locations. Hunt high in the morning.
What’s your thoughts on “ low glow” trail cameras? I pride myself on placement of trail cameras.... hidden, perpendicular to trail, high, most of my buck pictures are daylight and I view that as a sign you’re doing something right. I had two dandies at night looking directly into the camera for a couple pictures and changed positions! Wished I had it on video to see how they moved but I’m thinking they saw that red flash and didn’t like it. I know I have some nice deer on camera and I have decided to pull all cameras. Can’t hang trail camera pictures! Does anyone have success with “no glow” cameras going forward?
I think everything you 're able to do to hide your camera, you should. That includes purchasing low glow cameras. I know that these are more expensive and not everyone can afford them, but if you're able to, I think they do make a difference. It's one less thing the bucks could potentially notice. That being said, a lot of the cameras I run are not low glow and are the standard IR. Like you said, if I want to get daylight pictures and lower my chance of spooking deer with those cameras it starts with the placement. And I would say that most of the pictures I get the deer do not look at the camera, even at night when the IR is lighting up.
However, I do notice that deer / bucks look at my cameras at night, but it's really only at a certain time, sunset, when the IR filter is coming down in the camera to take that first low light picture of the day. That process makes a subtle click and if the woods is dead quiet they will hear that noise, causing them to look right at the camera. I'm not saying they don't see the IR, I'm sure they do to some extent, but most of the time I think they are hearing the IR filter coming down, tipping them off to the fact that there's something on the tree.
To answer your original question, yes I think low glow cameras make a difference and if you can, I'd invest in some.
@@whitetailevolution thank you for your reply! Cameras I have are “ low glow” but still had a couple night pictures staring straight at the camera. Very well may be the noise you speak of! I’m looking into the “ NO GLOW” cameras from Exodus. The cell signal is not strong enough to go that route. Cameron informed me you need 3 bars or you will be frustrated with cell cameras
You need to have your cameras 4 feet above the deer eyes. When a 4 year old or older buck sees a red glow on a tree, you probably won't ever see that buck there again, (they won't tolerate it) I have seen this too many times, until I started putting my cameras high which stopped getting those pictures of a big buck staring at the camera. (It also helps from trespassers stealing your cameras)

Everybody says different things. I hear people say bucks move most at noon and I hear people say they move at night... just hunt.
I think what most people are being honest with their observations and different areas / different times of year produce different movement patterns. For example in the early season I don't notice bucks moving mid day. But that changes during the rut, we see a lot more late morning movement from older bucks. I think where you hunt plays a roles as well. If you hunt in an area with a lot of older bucks, they'll be more active laying down sign and pushing out other deer in the area. However if you're in an area with very few older deer, you might not see as much movement mid day because those deer know they are the only ones around, they don't need to defend their territory.. a lot of factors. And I agree with you, just hunt and have fun :)
@@whitetailevolution yea I just moved and I notice alot of different movement with the deer population just a couple towns over. It's weird to think it changes so much. As soon as the season starts of course I see less deer than I've ever seen lol usually I can't get away from them. They follow me around the yard and I can't get them to go away. Now I want to hunt and I see none. 🤣🤣
...I agree with you ...like my boyfriend says...you can't shoot a deer if your not sitting in a tree and hunting mostly public land. He sees it as regardless of pressure the deer have to come through eventually especially in October for the acorns he sits by a food source then evening hunts he sits by bedding or thick cover with very faint trail use. Bucks will eventually show up day , midday , or night you just gotta sit and wait where the does are. He shoots a nice buck every year off of public land but he does do his homework by putting his foot on the ground. Not everyone has a piece of unpressured land or a hunting paradise to go and hunt in. Good information non the less !

They have free rent and free food in the Midwest. They still have big ranges just better nutrition and it shows in their size - like the rest of us midwesterners
