How to Find Pinch Points for Deer Hunting

- How to identify pinch points or funnels. This isn't a totally exhaustive list. Things as minor as deadfall in the woods can help steer deer movement, but these are some of the major features I'm looking for in terms of funneling deer movement on a map.

Your details make this difficult subject easier to understand. I have more confidence as a result. Thanks Garrett.
This is just another example of you continuing to share great info and helping others. Love your channel. Keep up the good work. Thank you for sharing.
OK this is so weird. I live 10 minutes away from the lake that was showing right when you opened OnX. I had to do a real good double take
Garrett, this is great. I live in Western NC in the mountains. We have a lot of public land. I needed this to help me get started. I got OnX and am looking forward to what I find. Thanks David
Bro you make some of the best content anywhere. Thank you for the info and breakdowns with actual maps. Helps a ton. Thank you again.
Really enjoy how you break down and explain your videos. Thanks!
Thank you very much for this video. I am a self taught bowhunter and this video made everything ive learned and researched just click so much more. Great video!!!!
Nice job Garrett. Those outside river bend are phenomenal during cruising. Most focus on oxbow but old mature bucks will hit the opposite side as they can wind check the oxbow for hot does bedded in the oxbow.
This has officially gotten me jacked for hunting season. (too early?) Been hunting for a while with not much success (still looking for that first buck). Really appreciate the nuanced scouting videos.
Awesome video! Thanks for all this info Garrett. It helps adult onset hunters like me a ton
Great tips and nice video Shane! Thanks for sharing all these great ideas for finding pinch points. I too have found the beaver damn connection, but learned so many new ideas even after all my years of deer hunting experience. Good luck to the THP team this Fall!
Great job! I actually jotted down a video concept similar to this last month for me to do regarding the places I hunt. In particular, the man-made pinch points on small plots (20-100 acres) with residences surrounding and hunting pressure from adjoining properties.
Thank you for putting together this presentation and sharing. This was very informative and I know I received useful information I’ll be putting to use in 55 days.
Loved it! We need more of this information. Thank you very much
Good job breaking down some maps, appreciate it!
You have no idea how much this video helped me! Thank you
Great video! Thank you!! Going to back to the OnX to look for the examples you went over.
Thanks Garrett - you are one of my go to’s for this stuff!
Thank you for doing this video! It’ll help me tremendously using onX.
Very helpful!! Thank you for all the examples. It definitely helps
Awesome, informative video Garrett! This simplified the process of looking for where to set up during pre-rut and rut. Once you find these pinch points, the only thing left to do is map out the appropriate entry for that day’s wind direction.
Very informative video on many different terrians
Great tips and tricks to look out for. I should definitely try to find some of those on the property around the house that I do hunt and definitely on public land. Trying to get my first buck and doe with a bow 🏹🦌 this upcoming fall season
Getting pretty excited for this season! You planning on hunting opening weekend? I hunt the river valley too. Might see you out there!
As always a wealth of information. Thank you and keep it up
Very informative. Great video!
We must be neighbors! I had to do a double take when you opened your map and I saw it pull up Medicine lake. That is my view every time I open Google maps....I live in Golden Valley and Work in Plymouth right off that lake. Thanks for your insights. I have been a long time grouse hunter in the north woods and got my first deer permit this year. A lot more planning going into this hunt!
What a great video that was very informative. Thank you for sharing such great information
Great video man. This stuff is super helpful!
Great video, can't wait until opening day!
Great video! Very informative!
Gosh your videos are the best man made me a better hunter learned how to one stick from you as well!
Well done ,thank you for the great info.
Great for a beginner deer hunter. Thanks
Great vid! Lots of good info here.
This was really good stuff. I have a decent idea of these areas in certain terrain, but not in others. Thanks for detailing many different terrain features

Awesome Garrett! Thanks so much!
You need to teach on the university level.. concise and very applicable... I'm so on it. Thank you Garrett
Thanks Mark!
Great video!
Good information, thanks
Garrett great information...Really like the funnel information. I'm hunting more marsh area.... do u know if OnX made changes to maps... doesn't seem like u can get a closer view or detailed view...I'm finding that HuntStand Maps have more clarity....
Outstanding. There are so many how to videos out there that are amateurish with more “uh’s” and “um’s” than Bayer made Aspirin last year. Just saw one titled “How to find funnels” I hunt Nebraska and he started talking about a Google earth map showing clear cuts. We harvest corn beans etc., no forest products. All your videos are first rate. Best to you and your wife. Any little DIY babies in your plans?
As always awesome content. Question, how often does OnX update maps? I use the app, but there is a few spots that does not show land that had been cleared and built on over a year ago.
I used to feel that funnels & pinchpoints were 1 of the same but they have subtle differences. I shot a buck with my bow 1st week of November last year that most people would call a funnel. However because of terrain & direction of travel the funnel would be north to south. However the pinchpoint is east to west due to water & a steep hill. The 🦌 could easily cross 50 yards broadside to me but the terrain directs him to me. Behind me is no hunting so I know anything coming from that direction is not orange. All the public spots I'm in r of this variety. Saddles & subversion r 2 other things I like to key in on. Saddles r nice cuz the deer 1 day will come from 1 direction or vice versa but always on the same line. All that is left is the killing 🌳. Subversion when all things come together to form a perfect ambush spot. There always seems to be a lone cedar rubbed raw in these spots. I like to find a nice red oak since this may take a few sits to get results since there isn't a funnel or pinchpoint. However on the right day the deer is dead to rights when conditions all point up 4 u.
Good job man, we’ll done! Quality stuff on multiple scenarios.
Couldn’t smash that thumbs up button enough!
Love the channel, especially the scouting videos. I have also done some gear modifications using your videos as a how-to guide. From one fellow native Minnesotian to another.
For what it's worth I really love videos I save to my folders on RUclips
Well Done!
How would you hunt a major power line that runs between ridge lines In East tennessee near Harriman Tn.
Just acquired 174 acres. Wet swamp mostly. Can’t seem to find a pinch point. They are all over the place. Would love your opinion on this piece!
If I sent you a property I'm about to buy, would you pick out some spots you might start out with?
nice video
Great job, make sure to report the tree stands to the DNR assuming this is recent finding of stand outside of the season still there. Just send them a pic with GPS on and they will take care of it :)
Yeah, they can go in there & muck up the area & then decide they need to hire a crew. That crew will be there the few best days a bowhunter could wish for loud sprayers that spray purple herbicide to control evasive species. Happened to me last year on public land. Luckily I had somewhere within a half mile away to go to. The next day they trashed that area & the following two days they were over a mile away on new ground & terrain. I was didn't go where I wanted to go then since I could just stay home & listen to the same noise with my neighbors leafblower. Not the season I started planning for in April of 2019.
@@josephtreadlightly5686 um, I think you replied to the wrong video :) I was talking about the DNR pulling illegal stands, I have no idea what you are talking about...LOL
Ha haha, 1 of the same. The gun season opens anywhere from November 3rd to the 9th in this state. So what do they do but hire a crew of guys to walk around everywhere on a 1000 acres of land during the best week of bowhunting all year. A couple of months later people r trying to setup vacation time for the year. Go to their website & there is everything from gun season to underwater basket weaving season but no mention of the bow opener. By far the best & worst state to be a bowhunter.
@@josephtreadlightly5686 You're still not getting it. These stands are there RIGHT NOW, which is illegal. Just take a pic with GPS on and problem solved. Has zero to do with hunting seasons. I personally would take them down myself, but the DNR told me not too. I'm not sure what type of land this is other than it's public, if it's an WMA...etc..etc....stand needs to leave daily, pretty easy to understand, if it's there, it's illegal. If it's forest it can be there for like 14 days or something, but then again, it can't be there right now...again, illegal...pretty straight forward I think.
I get it, they will investigate the stand issue & then come check your freezer next.
Does onX have a wind indicator?
Great strategy, especially for deer cruising during the rut.
Pinch points are the best places
Anyway you could do a video on something like this in a state like Maine or new hampshire. These two states are so different compared to other states that are even close like mass New York PA. Even those states are close they are not like Maine nh. So anyway you could maybe do a shorter video on terrain like those states.
Good idea. I'm not an expert in that type of terrain but can see if I can collab with someone
Your tracking function on onX works WAY better than mine.... I tried it a few times and on a whole scouting walk, it basically resulted in a 7 sided polygon... stopped bothering with it after that... though could be my phone.. I went super cheap on it... thinking about getting a decent GPS and the onX chip
Hey cory, maybe you walked in that shape over the course of your scout? Also if your cell service is limited in the area that your scouting, you will need to pre download the area you will be in with the offline feature. This will allow your gps to better pinpoint the route and location you are in.
It's your phone's lousy gps. I had the same problem and upgraded to a better phone with a better gps and problem solved.
Have you tried Eberharts tactics? Has it worked?
His hunting tactics or scent control?
Wow, do you ever do anything wrong, excellent work please keep it up, if your ever in WNY look me up thx Bobby J
This is IPP
I call them funnels
Fail on x isn't for canadians sadly
Pass. We don't need to kill others for pleasure or entertainment.
Who asked and why would you watch the video if that’s what you think
@@carterlarson9055 They are defenseless. Would you stand up against someone being bullied?
Levi Vegan a deer and a person are two different things.
@@carterlarson9055 Neither are things, neither are inanimate objects. They are both individuals, with thoughts and feelings, have families, and a desire to live free from harm. Does the way someone looks justify killing them?
Levi Vegan whatever you say... not sure why you would watch a hunting video and leave a comment if you’re against it. That did you think the video was going to be
