One of the best times I've noticed when bucks move is before and after a weather event. I'm sure feed is the motivation. To get their bellies full before storm and by the time it's over they are hungry again. I've noticed during wind or heavy rains the deer are very spooky and don't move or feed much. Probably because their hearing is impaired by the wind and rain.
Hunters strongly believe this, but the scientific evidence shows a weak relationship at best between cold fronts (or temperature in general) and deer movement. That's why it is not included in our 4 factors that have a significant influence.
Big bucks are not like your average deer they move in mysterious ways. They don't seem to follow science or the norm in most cases in my experiences and I've hunted 45 years. I've watched them belly crawl under fallen trees they could have jumped over, in fact I killed a nice 8 pointer on a really windy day on the ground on the side of a steep ridge. Shot him close enough to touch him with the end of the rifle when he stood u p in front of me. 11 o'clock till 1 is when I personally have taken my biggest bucks. Mountain bucks and farm land bucks move different at times. Don't siloet yourself on the ground, always use the wind, and most big bucks use the high ground in any area. They normally travel 3 quarters down on the side of a ridge above the doe trails and small bucks. Most all the deer I have killed have been within 20 yard or most of the time less and I mainly hunt from the ground. Just my own experience do what works for you and good hunting. Oh 1 last think no disrespect intended deer move more when there is a steep drop in temps no matter what science says. And try to locate where grandpa is bedding
Since you just told the belly crawl I gotta tell this. It was about 20 years ago. I was hunting a farm where pressure was near 0. The buck I was hunting was traveling the fence row above a large creek bottom. I humped in that morning before daylight up the back from a small side creek and into the hay loft of the barn. Every morning the work hand an 68 year old preacher came in to feed and such. Usually 8 to 9 o'clock. I heard the rod iron gate that morning. When he and the tractor got to the barn, he left it running and climbed up. He told me he and the owner watched that old buck go through the large creek and under the bridge you cross to get to the road to the barn. It got on its belly at the edge of the creek to get past the 200 yards opening I had in front of me. He didn't have to stay low the entire time. I came in the opposite way, wind scent I thought everything I needed to do. He came in to the edge of the fence of that field religiously and i watched from afar with binoculars. Still I was stunned. Thinking, is he pulling my leg? He said no and said the owner and he watched it in amazement. You know I predator hunted that property for a few years after. Saw him a couple more times but never heard of anyone taking him. Until one afternoon the wife called coming from her school just down the road. She said there was the biggest buck hit on the bridge, (same creek and bridge, state highway bridge) she had ever seen. I didn't go but the owner of store, next to the bridge told me it looked like a cow and the mass on the rack was huge. Guess that day he went over that bridge instead of under. People hunted the other properties because of seeing this deer but not one got to stick or shoot him. One of many strange things over 40 years hunting.
Good info! Once a buck reaches 3.5 or older it just seems they have wised up that they become much harder to kill and are creatures of habit. It’s really impressive and also quite a feat to harvest a mature whitetail. I have yet to do it but they are teaching me.

Great solid information. No BS in this video. I've been deer hunting 55 years, hunting exclusively with bow and arrow for the past 35 years. I can verify what's said here. Deer do move more at night but if you hunt at night you'll end up in jail!!!
Much of the key to my success has been to show up in a new spot. Where I am unexpected to be by the Bucks in my area. Many times I have been successful in a stand I haven’t been in that year. And happen to show up there late in the season or during the second rut
Down here in Mississippi. Im seeing a lot of night time movement under this full moon. Thanksgiving day, I saw 3 bucks on the side of the back roads from my aunt's house during the day.
All depends on how much hunting pressure an area has. I've made 8 hunts. I've only not seen deer on one morning hunt and one evening hunt. I'm up to 49 deer sighted this year so far. Granted, I'm hunting 1200 acres of private property with low pressure.
No big bucks in the USNF behind my house once all the green stuff is gone. They move at night in and around the private lands with houses like mine that have plants like roses and azaleas for them to feast on.
Haven't seen shooter buck since last week of bow season here in upstate new york, and I passed it up because i wasn't comfortable taking the shot about 50 yards out with some brush in the way. Gun season 3 doe ,On to next year ! Wish we had another month 😂
Great Info. We should all take in to consideration that there are more than 1 species of whitetail deer, that are found in different parts of the country. All deer will not do the same thing at the same time. What goes for someone in South Texas, probably won't go for someone in Wisconsin and so on. We should study things that are relative to our specific regions, hunting types/means/methods etc.
Hunt where they move close to where they lay and what they eat and what they want to eat early season such as sawtooths and grass when cold but I hunt in south alabama so what do I know
great advice. I have noticed that 8 days after a full moon to about 11 days if cold, the deer will become temporarily diurnal vs nocturnal in their movements. the "full moon" theory in your comments about the 3 minute mark were quite accurate, except that limited opportunity( based on personal observation over a 7 year time span ) cold weather is also a factor for feeding reason movement. possibly for the availability of forage. and as far as pressure, remember, you are in THEIR backyard, not yours. unless you spend enormous amounts of time at your hunting spot, you can't be there to notice things.
Thank you for all the information......(I strictly bow hunt). By keeping records on the few deer I've killed, 9 have been plus or minus 3 days of the new moon, 3 have been between moons or closer to the full moon. I hunt morning and evening equally, and the buck to doe ratio has been 50/50.....??? Understand that I'm not am expert.....more on the beginner side.
A scientist would tell you that what you have there is too small of a sample size to draw reliable conclusions about a relationship between moon phases and when you kill your deer. Several studies with very large sample sizes have failed to find any significant relationship between the moon and 1) deer movement or 2) rut timing. That's why we didn't include the moon among the factors that have a significant, predictable affect on deer movement.
@@DeerAssociation Agreed. I do believe that the length of daylight is the driving force of when the Rut begins more than any other factor. Thank you for all of the information you share, and for responding to my reply.
I agree with everything said. But I also think you hunt when you can. The first buck I ever shot with a bow (6 point 1.5 year old guy I wouldn't shoot today) was a cold windy Saturday morning. Sleeted all night and I thought it was a waste of time to hunt. Shot my first bow buck but would not have watching TV.
This is folklore, and it is not supported by any science we are aware of. Deer are not grazing herd animals. There's no time when all deer in a given area are bedded down and not moving. Their activity rates peak around dawn and dusk every day, but even during the slowest period (mid-day) some individual deer are moving.
here in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains in north Carolina it's simple. find water food on one side of stream the thick bedding area on the outher side ,find where the deer cross the most and put stand near the stream and your good to go. it's worked for me many years. papa says good hunting
This morning I saw 2 does, they were eating some acorns, I was gonna shoot one but I wasn’t comfortable with my shot… there was to much brush in the way
Deer movement peaks are why I sit the first couple hours of a day then move slowly until the afternoon again. I figure by 9 am, Deer are usually heading to bed or already in bed. Unless the signs tell me the rut is really on then I know it's likely the Bucks are moving later sometimes all day.
I've also learned that the warmer it is during hunting season, the more likely Deer are to bed down earlier or move towards water or thick cover to escape the warmth. Last year I shot a Doe as she was feeding near a swamp around 830 am and that day was supposed to be high 50s to 60s temperature wise. I chose not to sit that day because I guessed that the warmth would get the Deer to bed down.
Not trying to be a smarta** but I have seen more deer moving around where I live at around 9 am when it's cold than any other time of day in my county anyway
I am a BC hunter, I found out that whitetail deer move between 11 am to 1 pm , they have figured out we go for lunch between those hours. They are pretty smart animals to figure us out and we don’t move the they move , simple eh
I'm in my sixth year of deer hunting. I already knew all this by just observing while I'm out hunting...I didn't need science to teach me something I learned through common sense and just paying attention.
Scientists tracking GPS-collared deer have looked to see if various weather factors affected deer movement significantly. They haven't found anything that consistently changes established patterns that we discuss in this video. Wind, rain, warm, cold, none of these changed established deer movement patterns in ways that were significant and consistent enough to use them to reliably predict deer movement. Deer move more around dawn and dusk, and they move most during the peak of the rut. Not much changes this.
The data available actually shows deer (bucks and does) move the same or even a little bit more on days with moderate winds (over 10 mph). This would not include extreme winds, though, like gale force. But you're not likely to go hunting then anyway, lol.
Stray dogs can make a big difference I own a small tract of property and notice when strays dogs are about so find out if their someone’s pet before you take them out but strays will suffer a horrible death if left alone.
At best, weather has a minor influence on deer movement, according to all the studies we have reviewed. Far less than most hunters believe, and less of an influence than the four we mention. Thanks for watching!
In wv the 4 things are dogs....coyotes.....hunting pressure....and bear. U can walk right up on them in all this brier cover I've been 3 to 5 yards from deer in the thickets....and believe it or not couldnt get a shot....its kinda breathtaking exciting ....its like hunting grouse lol.
Use the 3 day rule.... I always hunt a stand for three days straight, from a hour and a half from daylight to a hour after dark. Its always worked hella great And ive killed big bucks close enough on the ground up against a tree like im turkey hunting to shoot them with a slingshot and kill em. Almost every big buck was killed in the middle of the day... thoughts anyone ? AND ALWAYS CARRY A PRIMOS CAN WITH YOU !!!
I also use midday to hunt bucks.don't see many deer but the right deer...I usexthe moon to do this @ specific times ,no guessing.neverxdo I put a lot of pressure on the deer if so game over!!!
True. And the bucks really move then. It's one of the pieces of evidence that supports the idea that the rut has a huge influence on buck movement rates, not cold fronts of cold temperatures. South Florida doesn't get cold fronts in August, but the bucks are on their feet!
@@DeerAssociation although the rut is prime time the moon phase is a second best way to determine movement. There are so many myths and theories the best for me that I've come to find out is to just put the boots to the ground keep your eyes peeled for sign and food and bedding I've hunted the ruts the moon phases good weather bad weather but if you do not get your butt in the woods and locate these deer and their traveling trails you might as well be happy with shooting immature deer
I seen a couple moving in the evening last week and then I heard another coming right towards me. It was going to come out in the open 10 yards from me. Then it showed it’s face!!! The biggest black bear I’ve ever seen in the woods and the only bear I’ve ever seen in 42 years of hunting. I almost 💩 myself!!
You can't take a little bit of data and predict whitetails. I'm trying to get a very mature buck and he walked right under my stand on opening morning about 10 minutes before legal shooting time and haven't seen him since but I have him on the trail cams showing up at the same spot I seen him, only difference is he's showing up in the middle of the night. He will probably die of old age because he changed his pattern after one morning of being near me. He is at least a 5 and half year old looking at all the trail cam pictures, saging gut, huge neck, short legs, huge shoulder mass and very smart.
When you use the term "hunting pressure," does that mean any human activity? I'm of the belief that it does, and by calling it hunting pressure you're being a little misleading. I have a cousin that drives six hours, one way, to come and hunt on my ranch once a year. The first thing he does when he gets there is to get on his ATV and buzz around the place refreshing his memory from last year, and seeing what changes/improvements I've made over the Spring and Summer. Last year was the first time I consolidated video from my game cameras to show how the deer disappeared during his visit, and didn't return during the season. The number of times I have a recording of the sound of his ATV passing by really gets your attention. I'm going to show him that video in four days, on Thanksgiving. Would you concur?
No, we are talking specifically about hunting pressure. The studies we are referring to in this video tracked the locations of hunters actively pursuing deer in relation to the locations and movement patterns of deer in the vicinity. None of them tracked vehicle traffic or other human activity besides hunting, so we aren't commenting on those factors in this video. Therefore, we disagree we are misleading anyone by calling it "hunting pressure." That's exactly what was being measured.
There's never a time that deer aren't "moving". They move every day, all day. It's a matter of where and what for. The one and only place you're not going to see deer is in your house. Get out there and stay out there every minute you can. After 30 years of deer hunting all kinds of forests, fields, mountains, swamps, by far mostly public land, I'm absolutely just as confident and comfortable heading out to the woods at 10 oclock in the morning as I am getting out there before sunrise, it really makes no difference to me.
Nope. Numerous studies have looked a lot of weather factors in deer movement data. No significant, consistent patterns have emerged that would allow anyone to use weather as a reliable predictor of deer movement. That's why we didn't include it in our list.
Regardless to all other theories, u will see the more mature bucks while ground hunting over scrapes while raining and in between showers. They rapidly move from scrapes to smell and re mark them. I’ve been close enough to once in a lifetime bucks to jump onto their backs on the same 5 acres multiple times and that’s exactly how. I’ve had them carelessly charge in like Im not even there. They can’t smell or hear you in the rain near as well and they go into overdrive trying to frantically keep their scrapes marked. Rain hunting is best for mature bucks if u are man enough to endure it
Hell I’ve spooked them and they come back when it’s raining. I’ve stalked them enough to know what scrape is what deer’s and I’ve named them all. Also I’ve noticed that useing doe urine doesn’t work as well as human urine. Use your own piss on the scrapes and watch what happens.
Bucks get up and move when they feel like it. No two bucks are the same. There's always a deer moving. Depends on which deer and when he feels like it.
A lot of hunters believe this, but there's no scientific evidence supporting a connection. In GPS-collar tracking studies, deer movement increases as the rut approaches and peaks during the peak of breeding, regardless of temperature, barometer, moon or other factors. That's why weather is not one of the four factors we covered in this video.
Good information, unfortunately none of this is true where Blacktail are concerned. Northern California, August through September, 100deg days, no rut, no dogs. You want a tough hunt? Every Whitetail hunter I know never came back. You guys have no clue until you have hunted Blacktail!
This may seem obvious but if you're hunting grouse, squirrel or other animals in the same places that you're going to hunt deer, the deer are being pressured AND WILL AVOID THOSE AREAS. We have some hunters who believe that, because they were grouse hunting, the deer will not be spooked. 🤦♂️😂
I knew a guy that killed 190 in buck and he didn't even know it was anywhere in the world, a tree branch fell out of the tree hit the ground and the buck jumped up and walk right past him and he shot it with his bow! Good thing that tree branch fell...

@@charlieboggs5210 Yep...plenty of doe movement in the 9-1030am slot for me too. Windy days seem Bad to me
I am a BC hunter, I found out that whitetail deer move between 11 am to 1 pm , they have figured out we go for lunch
between those hours. They are pretty smart animals to figure us out and we don’t move the they move , simple eh
Ive noticed this as well over the past few years in Alberta.. got my biggest buck ever two years ago just before 11 actually lol
Check out The MSU Bedding study..
This year rut is been off and on with weather swing warm and cold been better on colder days
Some of the most spot-on advise for a deer hunter.
I'm in my sixth year of deer hunting. I already knew all this by just observing while I'm out hunting...I didn't need science to teach me something I learned through common sense and just paying attention.
How many monster bucks have you taken? I've hunted for 59 years and have been very successful because I'm willing to absorb any information out there.
I use the moon to break cycles bucks use midday is good to me to see the single buck no hunting pressure and deer know this.good video sir!!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!

What about temperature?
No. Multiple movement studies have not seen a significant, consistent relationship between air temperature and deer movement rates.

Depending on the terrain thermal drop and thermal rise plays a factor in Buck movement midday 💪🦌❤️
The time I see most deer is before sunrise and through 11am have some come out at 9am some at 630 and 745am
I've always heard bucks will move in rain or overcast conditions, any truth to that?
Scientists tracking GPS-collared deer have looked to see if various weather factors affected deer movement significantly. They haven't found anything that consistently changes established patterns that we discuss in this video. Wind, rain, warm, cold, none of these changed established deer movement patterns in ways that were significant and consistent enough to use them to reliably predict deer movement. Deer move more around dawn and dusk, and they move most during the peak of the rut. Not much changes this.
@@DeerAssociation thanks for your input and time.

I do remember you mention that weather does not play a factor in deer movement. Does that also hold true to a really windy day?
The data available actually shows deer (bucks and does) move the same or even a little bit more on days with moderate winds (over 10 mph). This would not include extreme winds, though, like gale force. But you're not likely to go hunting then anyway, lol.

You never mentioned cold front or temperature drop. Interesting.
Love a portable treestand.
Can go anywhere to hunt.
It's November 8 and our fawns are small and spotted. Our rut is a long way off.
Stray dogs can make a big difference I own a small tract of property and notice when strays dogs are about so find out if their someone’s pet before you take them out but strays will suffer a horrible death if left alone.
1- Automobile headlights
2- Automobile horns
Should be # 1 and 2
Interesting. Before you started I thought weather would be a movement factor.

Its always worked hella great
And ive killed big bucks close enough on the ground up against a tree like im turkey hunting to shoot them with a slingshot and kill em.
Peak of the rut in south Florida is August
Thanks. Great info

Mature bucks are mostly nocturnal unless disturbed by nature or people until rut.
Great tips keep them on their toes!!!! Get out and hunt

I agree....less traffic would always be better
What about weather?

@@danieloakes6637haha now I gotta try that
Passed in a mock scrape during turkey season in April, SC. Had seven bucks that evening come to it. Breeding season runs past what we think.

1. Deer need food.
2. Deer movement. Time of day. Dawn & Dusk.
3. Deer move during the rut.
4. Intense Hunting pressure. Avoid it.
a buck sometimes wont eat when in rut and they loose a lot of weight
I have to agree with everyone definitely great information.
Thanks! Glad you found it useful and informative.
@@DeerAssociationwe see it as the propaganda that it is! Find some morals
Put a pair of walker hounds on their ass. That will always make them move.
Bucks get up and move when they feel like it.
No two bucks are the same. There's always a deer moving. Depends on which deer and when he feels like it.
I’m surprised they didn’t say a large temperature drop. Because that will definitely put deer on their feet.
1. Food
2.rut.
3 bigger buck
4.nousy hunter
They will not touch corn when there is acorns .Corn is not a good deer food .A old deer with teeth wore down has a hard time eating it
Night time is when deer move the most on my land!!
Good information, unfortunately none of this is true where Blacktail are concerned. Northern California, August through September, 100deg days, no rut, no dogs. You want a tough hunt? Every Whitetail hunter I know never came back. You guys have no clue until you have hunted Blacktail!
Deer move way more at night time and move way less in the day when there's a full moon.
Thank you for the great facts given. Makes sense. Instructional.
