It’s great that you’re able to get lots more venison in the freezer. When people hear I’ve taken some deer and express they want some I always tell them to get their winter clothes on and I will take them. No, but hell no. Nearly every single one over the years wants it packaged etc. Ain’t happening. Takes too much $, freezing my butt off, and the work getting it freezer ready. Some think that’s being selfish but when you offer to take someone and they cringe at the thought, well they don’t deserve any consideration of free venison.
Very well done. The scouting, the harvest, your composure, the filming and way to just act like you’ve been there before. Great respect to the game itself and the whole overall hunting process you displayed. Not to mention this was on public land.
Congratulations !!!! Glad to see you help others out as well.. i try and do the same as well but it was a tough your for me this year... i was planing on geting a Silencer Co for my 30-06 and 308 Win for next season
Its so nice to see a left handed hunter using a left handed rifle...i see so many youtube hunters shooting lefty and reaching across the gun opposite handed to work the bolt
I also have a Savage Axis lefty in 350 Legend - hows you bolt lift, is it kinda heavy ? I did some polishing on mine and installed a bolt lift kit that probably cut it by a third. I also use a Silencerco Omega 36M, even supers are really quiet.. great job getting 2 deer !
It's not terrible. I actually got a bolt lift kit though it was more of a "want to try" than a "need to have". Definitely not as smooth as a Tikka. I also had to grind a little off of the outer edge of the bolt handle so it cleared the scope fully.
that explains busting your cover for the doe. hats off to you man in nearly 10 years you have perfected the craft of hunting and videography. what are you shooting? the suppressor makes it sound like a .22 really cool to see your you on camera trying to tone down buck fever to get the shot lol.
Nice! Had the same thing happen in NC during bow season. Shot a fat doe and killed an 8 pointer 20 mins later. Alot of work but worth it. What gun and caliber is that? Congrats!
Great video! What do you hang your rifle on when you are hunting public land? I was given a saddle to try out and am looking for recommendations to hang my rifle on. Thank you.
I used two of the Tethrd Fold-n-Go's on a HYS strap. Only one is needed to hold the gun, but they can be useful aides as a rest if shooting to the opposite side of the tree. Pretty much any bow/gun hanger, even the cheap screw in ones if legal, can work.
Dang on the wide 360 angle I thought someone was walking out in the marsh without blaze orange after you shot the doe, then the 10 minute later part with the buck came and they were still walking not too far from where they were before and thought boy that is super unsafe. Then thought hmm very odd they barely got anywhere in 10 minutes, looked a little closer on a freeze frame and realized it was a spot on my monitor. Time for some new glasses. 😂🤣 Congrats on the venison. On sharing the venison make sure whomever you share it with is able to provide the registration confirmation number, or name and address or customer ID of the holder of the harvest authorization. In other words leave a slip of paper with them with the confirmation number and/or your DNR customer number they can show if any issues arise.
Congratulations! I’m just getting into saddle hunting and have a question for you on your camera placement of your main camera. Why did you have it up so high? Or was that the angle of the 360? You should also consider consider getting the tactacam 6.0. It actually is really good for that shot footage. Much better camera than the 5.0 by them. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the tip on the Tactacam 6.0. I was trying out having the camera arm just above my tether. It looks really high with the 360 angle but the camera arm base was probably neck level with camera being about the top of my head. With it placed like that you don't need to reach around the tether at all. It's one of the reasons I was able to get back on the camera so quickly after the shot on the buck. But I'm still getting used to it. There was a little glare on the screen as well with it being higher up and rising sun over my shoulder.
@@DIYSportsman thanks for getting back to me. I’ll have my 360 camera and main camera & arm up with me this weekend. So I think I’ll try mounting it high and see how that goes. I like that you don’t need to reach around the tether. Great camera work on that buck. I know what goes into getting footage like that.
Impossible to say for sure. I think he might have regardless if he wasn't sure where the sound had come from or had gotten pushed. Or maybe he'd have stayed more tucked into cover longer if the shot had been louder.
Good work bud! 🤛 what is that rifle you are using? It looks solid. I am looking for a good rifle and caliber for deer hunting, what would you recommend? Thanks
This is a Savage Axis in 30-06. I upgraded the stock to a Boyd laminated, put an updated trigger spring kit in, and had the barrel threaded for the suppressor. None of that was really necessary. The rifle shot well right out of the box for whitetail hunting distances. If I were to start now I'd likely go with a tried and true midrange offering like a Tikka T3x. I'd also likely go with a 308 instead of the 30-06. The -06 is more versatile when you start looking at pushing heavier bullets or higher velocities for say, elk hunting. But for deer the 308 is more than sufficient, has arguably better ammo selection and availability, and less recoil. Just about anything will work and some of the newer calibers are tempting, but proven staying power and availability are nice if you're not into reloading. I've also started shooting copper monolithic bullets and have been liking their performance. They don't seem to have as much meat damage either on my small sample size. But I like the idea of a bigger hole with them vs smaller 6mm or 6.5mm calibers because monolithics usually penetrate further but don't expand as much as lead core.
Was this MN or WIS opener? Congrats for helping out those other meat eaters. The Sandhills Friday migrated in big flocks out of the Sherburne,/Anoka cty. areas. It should be quieter up there late season deer hunting. It was so obnoxious with the flocks last weekend grouping & making more noise than ever b4. 😮
@@DIYSportsman There's no doubt they add to the equation & I won't miss them @ all. A guy I know on public yesterday with his shotgun shot @ a buck @ point blank range. I passed on that deer @ 20 feet a year ago. There wasn't any blood. U know why? He had slugs in the wrong jacket pocket. He hit it with #8 birdshot. Didn't realize it until we were back @ the parking lot. I was listening to a leaf blower too close to me over a half mile away but I should have heard a slug going off. I forgot to ask him if he had his bird barrel on the gun, ha haha 😄.
I posted a traditional hunt on opening day. Got a couple others I've been hanging onto and will post soon. By and large it's been a slow year. Much more area scouted but fewer bigger bucks located compared to years past.
I think so. I didn't really check. But I was using a copper monolithic so it likely went all the way through and had a small exit. The front humerus was completely shattered but I didn't lose much meat all things considered.
No, this was full velocity barnes vor-tx 150gr going probably 2900 or more. Sometimes it's tough to tell through the microphone. The tone is accurate. Their marketing says 36dB reduction, which brings it easily below the 140dB "hearing safe" threshold.
30-06. It doesn't have a recoil system, just adjustable length of pull. Most non-adjustable stocks I've shouldered still don't give me a solid cheek weld without additional material. Must just be my facial structure. This stock seemed to be one of the less expensive options to try a stiffer, better fitted aftermarket compared to the cheap plastic stocks that come with the axis. I may still end up going back to a traditional shape and just build the cheek riser accordingly.
I mustve said "ok now" "shoot" "get em" 100 times while that buck was standing around. Super risky he couldve trotted off anytime and never seen him again. Very lucky. Epic hunt
Good hunt, way to go. Ohhhh, people love asking for free venison don't they, lol. Some even ask me for backstrap! That crosses the line. I tell them if you want backstrap, you get your lazy ass up and go get a deer, lol. Good luck in the future.

Great job!! I did the same thing 33 years ago but haven’t been able to do it again. Congratulations.
Congrats Garrett. Curious what your rifle and suppressor set up is if you don't mind sharing.
I've got a Savage Axis 30-06 and Banish 30 Gold suppressor. I put a Boyd's stock on the Savage, and a Vortex Razor HD LHT 3-15x42
