Very nervous to crank it over but im going to try and hope for the best
Just wanted to thank you for your video that helped a lot . I have this same motor and it snapped the intake camshaft. I couldn't find a intake camshaft for the exact M111 motor and the one that snapped were not the original and looks like the previous owner put a different camshaft in as it had a 6mm higher profile than it should have and the reason why it snapped as the valves bottomed out. So eventually I found a camshaft of a later model but the timing pins on different positions. Your video was so that I could see were the camshaft lobes sits in top dead centre. The engine starts and runs fine except for that the one injector is now stuck open and over fuelling because it stood for 2 years.

Thank you it's a great tutorial and really helpful. Really apreciate that you showed us how to properly do it. Please now I'm trying to solve one problem. I'm not able to reach 20° just 10 or 30. I didn't have space for oil pump replacement (noisy chain) and mechanic made a mistake - result contact between valves and pistons.. ok now I'm trying to repair it after year ... Do you think that reason why I can't reach 20° could be that guys in shop took 0.35 from head? All timming parts are new. (Changed year ago by mechanic) thank you in advance.
Hi, if you are checking timing right, than yes, it is most likely because head was shaved alot, also why they took so much, mostly 0.05-0.15mm is enaugh to resurface.
You need to fully retard intake cam, than count 6 teeth and 6 teeth must align with that hole I am showing in video. If camshaft is advanced, than it will not allign and you could not check timing correctly.

I installed the new one but want first that the oil pressure put him in the right position. How do you crank the engine only by starter? I don't want to start the engine and the chain is jumping over.

Hi, sorry, I do not understand your question. It does not matter you turn camshaft or crankshaft first, when installing timing chain. After chain is installed, you do all turns by turning crankshaft.

Brilliant video thanks for the help. The issue I have is when I try to adjust the Vanos it feels stuck and spins the whole engine. If I hold the crankshaft with a breaker bar it still won’t adjust. Anyone any ideas ? Feel stuck

@@SupaTima Not sure what tool you're referring to. I haven't yet done the work...rather nervous about it, it's a big job. But I'm blowing vapor from the engine compartment into the car when not on recirc, so probably a toxic situation and needs to be done. Car runs great otherwise, just the gasket, motor mounts and a little suspension work and be like new even at 250K Also 2002 M111 C230. This guy has the most complete start to finish on M111 head gasket, there are like 5 videos. And there's a pin that needs to be knocked out, another video around somewhere on that easiest way. Also WIS mentions removing the tube on the back of the head where the transmission dipstick goes with 722.6 5 speed auto, but no mention of how to remove it. On the back ofthe engine. Did you remove any fan components, shroud etc?
@@DimlyAwareHUmAn im not sure about the dipstick. I havent come around to removing that as yet, ive started removing my cams but i got busy again so i have to come back to that when im ready. Im pretty sure youre gonna have to remove your sc again though, because at the side of the engine, theres a chain tensioner, which you NEED to remove along with your cams and reassemble, because the chain will be wayyyy overtensioned and you'll wreck your engine. Check and see where the chain tensioner clears if you're lucky you might be able to get away with just removing the sc top housing which is 6 bolts+ the pesky annoying boost hose clip. The tensioner bolt is pretty large tho, 27mm i believe, its the same as the crank balancer bolt so whatever you use to turn over the engine for timing will come in handy there also. I may have screwed up tho, and remove my tensioner too early before marking where my cams were fully, so i lost my timing there. Oh well, ill cross that bridge when i get to it, itll get retimed anyways to account for chain stretch

Hi there I need some advice if you can give it. I recently changed headgasket and with that the timing chain and all things around it. I had NO IDEA about those secrets you shared, but she's been fine and already ran for over 1500KMs. Would my engine simply die if I didn't retard the camshaft or would it take a long time? Asking this because lately I've been listening to a rattling noise that doesn't sound like a chain problem, more like the cam adjuster starting to fail of old age, and it's slowly but surely getting louder.

The engine has been running smoothly though, really nothing indicates I did something wrong except the noise. Hope everything is fine, it's been a bit of an investment in this lol

After mounting a new chain and a secondhand vvt ( vanos) the car keep throwing engine light. Y49 variable timing selonoide mechanical failure. It seems that the vanos is blocked on the retarded position. Is there anything we can do to de-lock it ?

To be honest was one nightmare. The mechanic mounted the tensioner in the wrong way. Even after warning him and showing him what will happen if mounted wrong. In the end he didn’t listen and took 5 minutes to see the engine stops and with damaged valves. Than we mounted a secondhand cylinderhead and followed your steps with the vanos. Also I have a clk in de showroom with the same engine and used it as example. Many thanks again mate. If you where near we would have drunk a couple of bears 😂
Ask the Germans why vanos gear does not lock with the camshaft. Common sense vs sophistication. I see why people love Asian cars especially Japanese. No special timing tool required to set Asian engines timing but you'll need 100 timing tool if you are planning to fix European western car. Garbage

Great video, thank you. However, for earlier versions of M111 without "VANOS" system, it is 9 teeth offset for the intake cam gear, not 6.

But when crankshaft is on TDC. We count 6 or 5 teeth for the intake camshaft? It was little confusing to me honestly

It has to work on all m111 engines.

Hi, it depends how you did everything. Your engine would not die if it is runing now, but how accurate is your timing now, is a different question.
