My grandfather passed away and left me with his 1998 W210 with the 2.3 litre M111. It only had 80tkm on the odometer. I've been working on the car quite a lot and it is very pleasant to drive despite some claims from online forums that the 2.3 litre is underpowered when paired with the W210. It's a lovely city driver, and I've been rotating it with my W140 S320. I conclude that both engines are extremely competent. Thank you for the fascinating discussion.
Thank you guys for talking about this fantastic engine. I'm so happy with my 1995 C180, it's my second car and first Mercedes (first car was E32 735iL). In Australia in Feb 2022 I paid $1500 AUD to get my upper and lower wiring looms replaced at an auto electrician. Don't know if that expensive or not just an FYI. Great video.
Thank you so much for sharing the information gents. I just got a C230 Kompressor w202. What an amazing Car, I'm hooked !!!! Glad to know the M111 engine is so reliable. I would like to bring my Merc for a service and Tune Up to you. Respect from Jhb
Over the years i've owned four M111 cars, a 98 E200, a 98 C180, a 95 E200 that was still running perfectly with the original wiring loom at 400k km and currently a 93 220E. What a bulletproof engine. I've never had anything to do besides oil and sparkplug changes. Just an occasional water pump but everything in the front on the engine is extremely easy to replace. Probably the best engine for a DIY mechanic. I don't like the M111 with a manual and i think that an automatic is more suited. The other engine worth considering is the OM605, good fuel economy and a far better sounding engine and a pleasure to drive with both an automatic and a manual.
Getting to know this engine after owning the diesel 2.3L for a month or more. I absolutely love it, it's not the strongest engine for a large van full of gear but it is very solid and doesn't miss a beat. I'm getting good at driving it to its potential now with practice on the manual 5 speed gearbox.
I recently was granted ownership of my grandmother’s C230k (w202). It had only done 60 thousand Kilometres when i took possession. She has owned it since new, and it still feels like it’s just rolled off the showroom floor. Cheers from New Zealand
@ coincidentally, its been a bit of a nuisance.. currently the butterfly diverter valve is ‘stuck’ open, so the supercharger rarely works.. potentially an easy fix! And the transmission is very sticky when cold (unless i turn it off and on again) Other than that, very comfortable motorcar
Hello Gents, Thank you for this nice overview of the M111 Engine. I do have to correct you on a fact here you have wrong 🙂 *They dont use Centrifugal Superchargers. They are Eaton M62, around 1000cc, ROOTS type positive displacement supercharger.* Why do we know that? We have been literally building supercharger kits for BMW's for over a decade and we use The M62 Supercharger from the Mercedes for a few of the kits.😉 The M62 is very compact and reliable. The other matter here is, we plan to do a High Boost Supercharger project based on the M111 and your video was very inspiring to see how enthusiastic you are. 😄
Ah, variable valve timing is different to variable valve lift. Vtech can do both. That merc can only vary the timing of the cams, not the amount of valve lift as well. Cool video!

Hi Guys, huge thumbs up for posting this info about the M111 engine,i have a c180 Classic face lift, not my last,i think that TERM " bullet proof " suits this engine providing you mantain the basics correctly and stick to servicing and shorter than recogmended oil chargers, will definately give you super long mileage and happy confident motoring, please share your contact details for future referances, local is definately lekke to chat more about our passion for this ' TIMELESS ' W202.
Wow thank you guys amazing talk.. i was given a beautiful W202 C220 with a engine loom issue , i just removed it this morning to who can i send it to be rebuild or where can i buy the parts.
M111 is an extremly reliable engine. I have an W202 C180 and it never let me down. Regular engine oil, coolant, spark-plugs changes and that's it. I even changed the thermostat, water pump and belt by myself with some basic tools. Easy to work on and I'm not a mechanic! C180 is not underpowered...low revs suit the car very well and it floats. If you want to move faster, you just have to use the power band at mid-range revs. All the power shows off better at higher revs/highway speeds (because bore vs stroke design). Manual transmission is better for versatility, choosing your driving style and fuel consumption too. My perspective is that these are made for effortless long journeys and open road driving. W202 and W210 RUST VERY BADLY in cold and wet winter climates. M111 engine will outlive everything else on these cars.
HI guys! I've just restored my father's W203 C200 Kompressor (M111.955), it has now 385.000km and I am wondering if I should preventively change the timing chain, rails and tensioners. What do you think?
Biggest problem with the M271 is that it needs regular timing chain replacements. Not only are the repair kits randomly unavailable, they're also quite expensive and the labour cost even more so.
The biodegradable wiring was available from MB a few years ago but we doubt that they'll be interested in carrying spares for these older cars. A qualified auto electrician can make a new one, as we don't recommend taking the chance on a used loom.
@@GalimotoMediaThank you so much for your input. I’m looking into a facelift W210 E200. Should I go for a Non Kompressor or Kompressor model? Thank you.
I have an S124 220E and I don't like this engine. A lot of vibration, noisy, unpolished. Oil leaks wherever possible. Cables a familiar story. Bobbins in an inaccessible place. It's no match for an outstanding car. Especially with the M103 or M104 engine. But it is strong, durable and relatively economical. Anyway, great video.
Interesting you said never went below 10 km/l on an urban cycle? I guess your trips are not that short and you don’t stay on traffic jams? With automatic gear box c200, those are some impressive numbers… Edit: also you live in an area without any hills?
I am 18 years old my grandfather gave me his prefacelift c180 1997, i drive it for 7 months now and its my first car. I REALLY love the styling interior and exterior, also i find it very reliable since from 1997 he hasn't change much he only went for the basic services and rarely for some broken things like fuel pump, fridge and his front headlight and it is still nice just like new with almost no rust on the paint even tho it was parked on the streets BUT i think i have a small over heating problem ... Idk if this is normal but in greece temperature are pretty high like close to 40 C° sometimes and when the outside temprature is above 30C° in the city my coolant car temperature usually is somewhere between 100-107C° when i am start and stop in the traffic... From your experience do you think this is normal ? Cuz my mechanic and my grandfather are telling me that every summer they remember the car being over 100C° when driving in the city and they say it is working like that for so many years without any problem .... Also keep in mind i have the version with no pre installed air conditioning so it has weaker fridge ( even tho my grandfather put later air-conditioning but he never changed the fridge so if u open it in the summer the temperature can rise up to 110+ C° and my mechanic says if i DON'T change the fridge it would be better not to turn it on in the summer 😅)
Hi there, thank you for your detailed message and we hope you have many happy travels with that C180. By the way, we hope to do a documentary on the 202-Series in the future! 100°C is fairly normal for these cars, 105 or 107 is a bit high but still acceptable in hot weather and slow traffic. You should worry (and start taking action) when it goes beyond 110°C or gets close to the limit, 120.

use a 2.3 that uses the bosch hfm ecu it should be the exact same make sure its the pre-evo engine the use an updated head design so it might not work
