As a beginner my art school friends always showed me their fancy art supplies.. and as a teenager I got so angry over things I didn't had.. now I'm being thankful for not having those at that time and now I can focus on my skills more than the ease that art supplies gave..💕

I used to be the same way! I used to believe that the supplies are what makes the artist too, but many can created wonderful art with a standard pencil and notebook paper.
I never realized how much dedication and work it really takes to get there. Funny how these untrue beliefs can influence negative thought patterns.

Totally relatable! I am preparing for NIFT entrance ! and I have always compared my art to others which left me anxious and overwhelmed only to be consumed in idea of perfectionism ! I would procrastinate and imagine my art to be perfect one day without really putting any effort!

      @@Weeping_lover OUCH! I resemble that remark. 😱
In my defense, I have reasons for not creating as much art as I’d like, that makes sense.
Until someone else uses similar excuses and I hear how stupid those negative beliefs sound out loud…🥶
I have no clue what NIFT is. It sounds like it’s an art school. Either way, good luck with it.

      @@mrs.quills7061 Ditto.
Growing up without something’s has made me resourceful and able to discern what’s necessary, convenient, or just a useless money trap.
It makes me feel empowered and like I have a super power. The power of discernment.
Spending a lot of money on art supplies causes me anxiety.
However I can definitely benefit from buying better quality paints, brushes, and paper. I think I’ve gone too cheap. My brushes fall apart on paper that can’t hold paint.
Hopefully I’ll find the balance. Until then I’ll work on drawing every day. I can’t go wrong with pencils and copy paper.

I am a colorblind artist, and your words about the amount of art supplies really hit close to my heart. I spent so many years looking for the right art supplies so I could be like everyone else. I thought if I had more variety, a greater spectrum I could make up for my blindness. Recently, however, I have found I am happiest with far less. A small set of pencils. A cheap ball point pen. A limited palette when I paint. Less supplies has really freed me of the pressure to fit in and has allowed me to see and interpret the world how my eyes are able.

Your early bird story is similar to mine! I was a 'night owl' for awhile, staying up till 4am and sleeping till noon. One night I stayed up all night to finish a project, and saw the sun rise in my apartment. I couldn't believe how beautiful it was! I realized I had never witnessed that in the whole time I lived there, and literally overnight I became an "early bird". It's been over a decade since then, and to this day I am always up at the crack of dawn!

Dearest Valerie, today is the day, I need to write a comment, because I'm impressed of your knowledge and wisdom. 😊
I am a 56 year old girl from Berlin and If I wouldn't have become a singer and voice teacher, I probably would have chosen to be a painter (artist).
You are doing such a great job here of motivating and encouraging people to be what they want to be and to do what they want to do. It's all about mindset.
Yes..., most of us (especially people of my age and older), got limiting thoughts of ourselves and what's possible in live.
It' s wonderful to see such a young lady like you, who already got that understanding of how live works.
Thank you and lots of love from Berlin-Kreuzberg. 💗

As we acquire knowledge, we also need to acquire wisdom. The two combined are more valuable than either one slone. Few people seem capable of analysing that process as it is happening in "real time". Your gift - amongst many others in your "portfolio of life" - is that you relay your new knowledge and your emerging wisdom in both "real time" and "reel
time" so that your audience learns from but also with you. Keep going, Valerie. Yours is an interesting life unfolding as it should - to paraphrase a famous prose poem. Following each of your tools to mastery is a Da Vinci way of life...

Thank you so much for another mesmerizing video! You really inspire me and make me rethink so many things. I'm a graphic designer and I've been returning to drawing after so many years, the fast pace of the design world really made things difficult, and seeing your videos take me back to my childhood and how time was soooo different and enjoyable. Now I'm trying to allow myself to take the time to create the beauty I want to see in the world and have time to experiment and learn about myself and develop my skills. Please never stop your videos they are really an inspiration and a breath of fresh air in this crazy fast passed world! In spiritual terms I once read that apparently, when we sleep we go into the "real world" and our senses are more amplified, they say we can meet other spirits outside the material world and it may be that you felt that as you were "trapped" in-between worlds, not fully awake nor fully asleep. Maybe that's not true but what do we really know... Thank you again! 😊💕

I was in survival mode for a long time and when I’d try to make a change id try too hard, not being able to sustain the Herculean effort, giving up and hating myself.
I’ve had to overhaul how I approach taking care of my brain (exercise, journaling, studying etc) by practising mediocre consistency. Now I try to put in consistent 50-60% effort into my journaling habit - to make sure I do it I began recording it and posting it on YT.
Giving a small, consistent mediocre effort everyday has allowed me to make the most progress and surprisingly/unsurprisingly the most freedom.

This couldn’t have come at a better time for me. Anxiety has been getting the better of me recently and I think anxiety is that ‘survival mode’ your talking about in this video. I get anxious over small things as well and even tho I know it’s going to be a long journey and I’m not going to be able to make my anxiety vanish straight away I do want to work on it. When I get anxiety really bad it makes me exhausted and basically I’m getting tired of being tired with anxiety. Although I have tiredness issues to do with my health problems I don’t think my anxiety helps with being tired either. Thank you for the inspiration and motivation with this video. I have been stressing out about my future and earning money to move out of my home. My family is nice and my parents want to support me, which I’m very blessed. But I can’t grow because at the same time I have to follow certain rules and think a certain way to be able to live as harmoniously as possible. I see instagram artists grow so fast and get their studios, start earning money enough to support themselves, and I compare my life and growth to theirs. It is unfair to compare since I know they have worked longer or harder than me, and I try to remind myself that comparison is the thief of joy. Still it is hard. You have the same teaching philosophy of my late art teacher. You say the same things as he used to say. I miss him so much. I never purpsued fineart, and now when I want to try to get into it again, I'm overwhelmed with emotions and thoughts that makes it harder to start something. Mastering one or two supplies as you say, maybe I can try that first. Maybe that is a way. Thank you Valerie. I watch this in a time when I really need this because my heart has been sad for a long time

there is no time to avoid your vlogs. I get to understand of myself in you. I am going through those times of concerning mental situation, which is one thing that has gotten me hope to know no matter how insecurities after a while come in with anxiety, I needed a mental exercises such as breathing exercises because after watching this video I laughed at myself because I focussed too much externally of what made me insecure a lot not realising that my inner self needed love, comfort in things I wasn't aware of that led in the first place to insecure me so much. the brush experiment part got me laughing so hard... yeah, there is no need to invest in so much supplies than learning the few we own. love how you paint, playing with the brush strokes it's fun to watch.

Hi Valerie, I am grateful you shared these today. I live in the U.S. I have visited Berlin before and I really loved it there. I love Europe. I am a painter, an artist as well. I like how calm your videos. I want to tell you that my life here seems anxious, I am glad you mentioned the construction workers because my window is above where they pull up every morning, and I live below someone who I can always hear walking above me. It creates a very unsettling environment for me. I hope I can leave/move from here soon. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you very much Valerie for inspiring me and making my evening peaceful and lovely.
In this video one of your sentences reminded me of something. Once when I was having a sculpture lesson in my art school we had to make a sculpture of an ear. So at first the teacher told us to take some papers and start doodling the ear looking at the original sculpture on the wall. We doodled like two pages and some of the students asked why were we doing it. The teacher told, that while doodling the sculpture we study all the little things and details of the ear. And more we doodle, more things we sea and remember so while sculpturing it will be way easier.
    And he was right!

I studied art and wanted to become an artist so I feel the struggle when people bought new and fancy art supplies. But over time I learned that art doesn't improve with supplies. Of course you will have an easier time if your medium is very pigmented and UV resistant. However the cost of high quality materials can really hold you back. I know it held me back as I was afraid to make mistakes on my practice canvases and the worry made it worse. My tip would always be, invest in GOOD not expensive but good quality brushes as your first splurge on art supplies. As the brushes are an extension of your hands. For other mediums, the canvas/paper. Trust me, my 2 euro pencils from Action translate better on quality sketching paper than the fancy pencils on normal paper.

You sparked a thought in my mind! Preparing for the worst is a way to avoid disappointment and heart ache. However, to switch out of a lack mindset, we instead need to learn that failure is not a reflection of who we are, but a tool so that when we are faced with rejection, we don't use it as evidence to support our negative beliefs (not shielding ourselves by preparing for the worst but diving in whole heartedly). To look at failure as a required part of the process that shows you what you can improve or that maybe you're looking in the wrong place and that you should redirect and keep moving forward. !!!Failure is not a reflection of who we are, but tool designed to help us navigate our lives!!!

This video was so beautiful for my soul, creatively & also taught me stuff about emotions & thoughts. So for mental health it was a great video. If your a beginner & this is your work then your pro level work will be out of this world. I also love how to introduce the concept of becoming a morning person from a night one which is what I struggle with and seeing what’s there to look forward to instead of doing it because everyone should wake up in the morning. The true reason I feel one will wake up in the morning is if there is something to look forward to and in your case in was the golden clouds and light, we just have to find that which extends its hand out to us to get us out of bed.

I've been struggling myself for 3 years to find motivation to create again and fight against that anxiety and constant tiredness I'm feeling when it comes to make something with my hands. Your videos are truly helping me and I'm sure so many others. It is such a great feeling to find someone putting feelings so many have into words and illustrate them through art. Watching you painting has become one of my favourite things! Sending you all my support and love for art school and everyday life x :)
