I always thought they didn't open because if she was knocking on the backdoor of the church, the Archdeacon would have been closer to the front, where the altar is located, performing a mass or prayer service (as is seen later in the "Heaven's Light/Hellfire" sequence), and the knocking was too brief for him or any of the monks/priests to really register what was happening. That, or the Archdeacon was asleep when it happened and it took him a while to get up and reach the doors in time. By the time he managed to get the doors opened, it was too late for the mother, but he saw Frollo about to drown the baby, and managed to stop him.
It's not a small church. It would be no surprise if it took him at least one or two minutes to walk to the door and Frollo was extremely fast and impatient.
Plus it is night. Except for some holidays, there's no night service. So the church would have been empty and the priests sleeping in the nearby parish house. And even if it was a service right then, music and chanting was a part of it and a short silent knock on the door was very unlikely to be heard. Anyways Notre Dame of Paris is huge! The doors must have been very heavy (wood+iron+size) and therefore not easy to open. If you observe many big church doors have today some smaller sized door cut into them to be opened without the assistance of a dozen people.
I thought it was because the priest didn’t get there in time because he would have had to safely drop what he was doing, get his cloak, open the heavy doors and go outside. A process that ate up too much valuable time.
Catholic churches are meant to be left unlocked so people can come in at all hours to pray, as well as the constant presence of those wo pray before the Eucharist. The way my dad put it, the Lord is never let unattended.
@@heathercontois4501 no. They are open for everyone but the place itself is closed when theres no attendant for obvious reason. Ur making it literal that doors should always be open. If that was the case they wouldnt bother making doors anymore. The actual quote meaning is that everyone is welcomed in the lord's house.
@@midnightfun1277 not at protestant churches, no, but catholic churches are required, by Rome, to keep the doors unlocked and the eucharistic in constant vigil.
Imagine going through all that work, searing heat and probably even passing out at the strain and crafting magnificent doors just for people to blame the devil for it. I feel bad for the guy.
I imagine that he just worked very hard on them because he wanted to construct something beautiful for God. I don't understand why people are quicker to assume the concept of him possibly making a deal with the devil for those doors, instead of considering that God might have blessed this man with a miracle who just wanted to serve Him and labored diligently to show his love.
@@nathenewendzel7806 That's "Christians" for you. The ones that hate people because they're different and make actual Christians ashamed to admit their faith.

It was interesting to hear about the stuff to do with the doors despite me not being sure if you were digging too deep. What I 100% DON’T agree with is when you got to Esmeralda. There was nothing shown in her actual actions to suggest she practiced witchcraft, she was just a talented performer and very clever and resourceful as well as beautiful. She DIDN’T place a curse on Frollo, it was an incredibly big part of his character that he’d been taken by surprise at her beauty and dancing, fallen in love with her, and gradually became obsessed in a way that would even make incels shake their heads. His behaviour is ENTIRELY on him because he’d been attracted to a beautiful woman, couldn’t get what he wanted, and couldn’t find a healthy way to deal with his feelings or his prejudices. It’s really important that folks don’t perpetuate the idea that Esmeralda being one of the Romani people meant she was actually using any kind of magic or had any responsibility for the atrocities Frollo committed. Remember, he set the whole damn city on fire trying to find her and tortured if not killed many innocent people.
I wouldn't say he fell in love. I think he was just attracted to her in a really creepy obsessive way and that's it. And because she was a gypsy he was using that as an excuse for his behavior. I mean he even calls her a witch at some point in the movie. He goes on to say that it's her fault that he feels that way.
The magic tricks Esmeralda used on her performance to dissapear or change her looks could be very well called witchcraft by Frollo (and the rest of the population), even if she explained how it works, the guy just wanted an excuse to trap her in a corner, and force her to accept his demands.
I agree 100% with what you said and was coming to the comments to say the same this but you did it first and much more eloquently than I could have. That part really made me mad, like when people say Anne Boleyn was a master temptress. No!!! She was doing her job and even left court to get away from Henry. Esmerelda did not put a curse on frollo to make him obsess over her. I’m pretty sure that she wanted nothing to do with him
Judging from what i just hear: the blacksmith was a master craftsman, but to create the doors in record time. He pushed his body to the limit and beyond, so shortly after the doors were made he died due to exhaustion.
I remember her grabbing the ring-handles and pulling desperately to open them before frantically pounding on the doors begging for sanctuary. EDIT: Just rewatched the scene. She really didn't have time to try anything beyond knocking...
Poor guy, he did too good of a job and everyone got suspicious. All I can picture is that metal smith being so happy and proud of his awesome doors, and everyone being amazed for like 5 seconds until that one idiot shouts out "Wow the devil himself couldn't make finer looking doors." and then some Karen being like "The devil you say? Oh yes I saw him sell his soul to the devil to make those fine doors. Everyone pay attention to me now while I tell you this crazy story I just made up." and thus a really amazing artist's life was completely ruined when all he wanted to do was show off his craft, and make some really amazing doors. The lesson: Don't do TOO good of a job on anything or you might be seen as a in league with the devil.
@@miscalotastuff733 Very true, such craftsmanship would take its toll on a person physically n mentally especially if it took weeks or months to complete
I know right? Imagine all the time it took him to make those doors too😥 sounds to me the stress and exhaustion he got from it after finishing them messed with him so bad it killed him.
She knocked like, 3 times on giant doors in the middle of the night. Arch decon probably just barely woke up right at the end of her knocking, got to the doors, and opened them to see her dead body and Frollo bout to yet the child.
*A lady runs through Paris' streets, chased by a man on horseback, knocks on the doors of the cathedral in the dead of night. The horseman catches her and runs her over, only to be stopped by a churchman a few minutes later.* Deluxe: Clearly it's because it was the Devil Doors. Couldn't be that there was nobody close-ish to the door at that time and that a horse at full speed is pretty quick.
The stone carver WAS Quasi. There is a whole documentary on him somewhere, I remember watching it. He wasn't anything like in the Disney movie, by far, but neither is Pocahontas. It's more like an Alice in Wonderland start, based on a real person but the character itself is completely made up, just some aspects taken and the rest is all fabricated to make a good read.
@@jasminkrieger8228 Yeah but I think they are talking about the person who Victor Hugo based his quasimodo character on when mentioning «real life». He wrote the book to bring attention to the plight of the gothic arcitecture that was falling into disrepaire at the time, so that’s why there is so many descriptive sections. It makes sense that the characters would be inspired by people who would have worked around there at the time.
The movie…was based on a novel…written by Victor Hugo…to raise money to renovate Notre Dame as a piece of French architectural heritage vs…getting torn down… (it’s not a folktale)
It was a Nobel yes however just like Dracula, Frankenstein and Sleepy Hollow the story would likely spread through word of mouth making it a folk tale just like Treasure Island, majority of fairy tales and even stories like Aesop’s fables
pretty sure it just happened so quickly. They were unlikely to have someone just sitting at the door. So hearing a knock they would walk over there and not necessarily rush. It all happened in a matter of seconds
Exactly. And Notre Dame isn't exactly small, it's a looong walk from one end to the other and in the middle of the night not many people would have been around. Even if the priest guy had run from one end to the other, he didn't look particularly young and nimble and would never have made it in time to beat a galloping war horse.
_Because_ it's church and most of Christendom is seeped in blood and doing demonic things, like torturing people who're different than them, ironically enough. Which imo doesn't sound any "work of God" rather than works of well.. :-L Btw, do you know if the Church has officially apologized for all that? The murders, witch hunts and attempted genocides'? (Genuine question, not trying to be mean or anything) I hope they have-
REMINDS ME OF SOMETHING! Near where I live there is a town with a church where the roof of the tower where the bell is in, is literally twisted. According to a legend during the building process of the church a demon or the devil (can't remember who exactly) appeared and said if that building will not finish to be a church but instead be made for them they will help finish it without a problem. The mortals agreed and the building was finished in no time- as a church. When the demon/devil later returned and saw that it was a church they were so mad that they wanted to rip off the roof of the tower where the bell was. They got up there, but no matter how hard they tried it just wouldn't come off. They only accomplished to twist it before giving up and leaving for some reason. That was the legend, but there is actually a real reason why the roof is twisted. During the building process of the tower a strong rain came up for a while. Thanks to the way to much water the wood blanks (or whatever the things are called that were used for the building) for the roof bowed and turned in such a way that the towers roof now looks like as if somebody tried to get it off in the same way you take a screw out with a screwdriver. After they saw what happened to the tower the town was like "Eh, now we can create a cool story why it looks like that without having to pay to restore it!"
I believe that the reason he died was that the stress was too much and exposure to the intense heat caught up with him and when he finished the doors his body gave up
REALLY SMART ANDSER, BEING MADE FUN OF AND NOT GETTING CREDIT FOR VERY HARD WORK THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IS VERY STRESSFUL THAT CAN CAUSE CANSER AND DEATH
Did they forget that God is capable of blessing people with amazing gifts and talents? Why did they all assume the devil instead of considering the fact that God blessed this man so he could construct this beautiful work for Him. For what we know, he could have prayed for that skill set. I believe those doors were His gift for God.
because their leaders care more about their own POWER and influence than they do about actually helping anyone, muchless for them to learn the truth by listening to the divines themselves or guiding anyone to know the difference between the divine and random spirits who know you're gullible
Keep in mind that Notre Dame was built during the Middle Ages also known as the Dark Ages where people used to believe in mysticism a lot more than we do nowadays. Now I think it was, not only God helping him build the walls, but also, he might’ve put a lot of superhuman effort on what he was doing and that’s why he dyed out of exhaustion after his work was done.
I think it was because the priest didn't get there in time. It was happening so fast and Notre Dame is quite large. Also it's at night so they could be anywhere or asleep.
I really don't like the "Esmerelda used witchcraft fron Frolo" twist, sure she's a Romani and they're known to be linked to witchcraft, but that doesn't mean they really are magical. Not to mention that we KNOW Frolo is a really sadistic and cruel old twat even before Esmerelda does her dance, it really isn't above his character to be creepy and obsessive about someone that would defy him Not to mention that by cursing him in that way, she would have practically knowingly doomed her people as it led to an even greater persecution of her people
Yeah, I mean, I didn't like that part, it's like the same old "let's blame it on the victim". She placed a curse on him, what? He was obsessed with her because he was an a**hole.
“Frollo would go to hell if he murdered baby quasi” Well I think we all know he still went to hell by the end of the movie. Lol that reminds me and my grandma were watching this movie she went to the bathroom before the sevens where all of Paris was burning. When she came back a few minutes later the scene were Paris was burning showed and my grandma was like “did he burn down all of Paris” and I was like “yeah”. She saw this movie before and she was shocked Frollo burned down all of Paris. Lol find it funny.
Am I the only one that believes that frollo went through the devil doors . When the lava fell . He was in front of doors . Were those the devil doors ?
Possibly since the lava / molten metal was meant to symbolize that hell had come to claim the man who believes he could buy his way into heaven with deeds alone and that his murder was justified. Even though as a learned man of the church he should have known that works alone can’t save anyone and that’s kind of the whole point of church. It’s likely the “devil doors” didn’t open both because of time and because the surrogate devil in this film was already on her heels
If you pause at about 8:06, there is a clear frame of Frollo standing in front of the devil doors. You can tell because of the statue in the middle splitting the two doors, much like its real life counterpart. I never noticed this detail until I went by frame by frame, but I personally think that its great symbolism of his character.
Here's a question, how do they know that GOD didn't just BLESS the man with talent? Take a look at other great artists that were born a century later. Michelangelo or Leonardo Da Vinci. Nobody accused them of being in league with the Devil! Michelangelo who could carve muscle and vein from pure marble and painted the famous 16th Chapel ceiling or Leonardo Da Vinci who painted what is perhaps the most famous portrait that is the Mona Lisa. You didn't see mobs forming to burn them at the stake just because they did great works of art that outclassed other artists. Just look at Notre Dam itself, it's Architecture and internal structure, it was all beautifully made and yet there again! No one's pointing fingers at any of the architects and others who worked on a house of the Lord and accusing them of Devil worship.
Because of their status, if they had friends with a wealthy family or they were from a wealthy family, they will frame it as God's blessings if not then it is the devil.
@@cristyjaller Salem witch hunts in a nutshell and those were sad deaths as well. Heck I'm sure the majority of the people that got accused were just really good doctors. The only thing I dislike is the theory of that Esmeralda is really a witch who casts spell. I find it disgusting and also doesn't fit her character and has no reason.
That poor guy, being and artist myself.🖌 There's nothing more nerve-wracking than the odds of putting all your heart and soul into one of your biggest projects yet, only for it all to go to waste with so little people understanding what it takes to bring art to life.😰
I always just thought the doors wouldn't open because it was the middle of the night and it took the Bishop a while to get up and walk to it. I mean really, it's not like the cathedral has servants or guards to stand by every single door 😂🤷♀️
I'm not sure if they meant for this to be canon in the disney movie, but in a previous stage show it was revealed that Quasimodo's father is actually Frollo's younger brother, so his hair and skin color could've come from one of his paternal grandparents.
@@queenmarshmallow8013 Yeah I know that, but that's the only reason I could find as to why Quasimodo is a romani woman's child, but has white skin and red hair.
So not that long ago, there was this whole controversy in Europe because a Romani family was found to have a red-haired child. Everyone believed that the Romani parents had stolen them. DNA tests revealed that the child did, in fact, belong to them.
Honestly I think Frollo's obsession with Esmerelda is literally a lite edition of creepy old white men's obsession with women in general, but also Esmerelda being melanated again can hint at the fact that back then and including Today women of color; especially POWERFUL women of color were/are seen as something to be tamed in the white male gaze. I don't think Esmeralda had to be sexual or promiscuous or provocative in any capacity but her just being strong-willed and compassionate for people and being outwardly spoken John Claude frollo saw her as a challenge. Because if you think about Esmeralda as compared to the average French woman at the time. Their personalities would be drastically different and their Acceptance in society would be drastically different as well. Be quiet white woman simply keeping her head down and being Pious would not Garner any attention from somebody like frollo and therefore would be easily dismissible. Especially in asexual or lustful manner. Esmerelda would be considered a wild woman essentially by that day standards would therefore already have her shunned by society anyway. Then add to the fact that she is Romani and the fact that unfortunately the Romani hasn't been given a good reputation throughout history which is dumb and sad therefore by Nature even if she is not going out and doing anything inherently wrong she is already seen as something evil or to be avoided or unclean. Obviously none of this being the truth but back then because of societal manipulation racism and ethnicism being rampant in those days. Also as meralda just by existing as her Sovereign self would be seen as a bad example to other young girls of how not to act and would be used as a means to invoke fear into young women's Minds who acted out. Yeah history is full of fuckery
I mean in the original it comes out that she wasnt even a gypsie to begin with, but a kid they had kidnapped as a baby. Ir we applied the standards of the day to her we would have to do so to her book counterpart as the disneyfied version of history is already pretty innacuarate. What we rather should look at here is that to make Esmeralda a sufficiently innocent victim Hugo was forced to incert this bit of info about her being an person of non gypsie discent at the verly last minutt changing practically nothing in the story (though it is fun to see a bigott who wanted her killed just because she is a gypsie come to the realisation that Esmeralda is actually her long lost daughter), while Disney didn’t need to do so for her to be a sympathetic character in their movie. Didn’t they even include the word romani in the movie? IDK I’m just reminded a bit of how when Charles Dickes wrote about poor people he had to make them so sickeningly wholesome and perfect so that the readers would feel sympathy for them because he was fighting against their ingrained prejusices against them, when it comes to how Victor Hugo wrote Esmeralda. I’m glad Disney changed that part as it’s not needed now, hopefully.
I read the book The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo a few years ago and it talked about the carver and how he was a troubled soul and that’s what inspired him to write the story, but it doesn’t really say if it was a real life Quasimodo or not.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is Disney's darkest, most gritty and most adult film that they've ever released. It's such as underrated masterpiece. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💯💯💯👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
When I watched the movie I thought the reason she could not open the door was because it was incredibly heavy or had a lock on the other side. She died because it most likely takes a while to open those doors, not because holy water is the key to opening it. The timing between life and death during a chase can be a difference in seconds, and that door looks like it'll take a whole minute to open. Not only that, but it takes a while to get to the door depending on where someone is in the church. There was no saving her from the devil man on horse back. Also his whole infatuation with esmerelda is just a whole song about how horny he is for her and how he blames her for making him lust which is a sin, so she clearly must of done a spell cast on him 🙄. He is gross and creepy. She's a beautiful lady, but he chose to be a horny bastard. There's no witch craft there
While very much like a lot of Disney's movies, I'm always amazed to see how many people don't realize that most if not all are based on some book form. This movie is no exception. I wish people would actually take the time to read or listen to audio to understand the depths these stories have. In fact, one of the point Victor Hugo was making in his book was to pay attention to these 'Books in stone'! He was juxtapositioning the great monuments of architecture against the written word(the advent of the printing press). How sad and disturbed Victor would be to know that his book received the same treatment at the hands of moving pictures!! I don't blame Walt Disney personally because his drive was to pass on and cherish these tales for future generations just like Hugo, it's the audience that did it in both cases. What we the viewer chose to see and remember is the culprit. When we only chose to skim the surface of a topic and think that that is all there is to know, we end up with only a shallow understanding of what is. Living like the mayfly, only hours!! Please chose to swim and discover a brand new world! Read the book!!
It's not nearly as deep as what you're making it. But it is a cool story about the doors. In times like that, superstition and rumors can make or break a person... and or could kill a person because he couldn't find any more work. Disney's Quasimodo vs the book is like a blueberry vs nightshade berry.
Now I can say much on the subject of the layout of Notre Dame, but if it was like many other Roman Catholic churches, holy water would have been by the doors for the patrons to bless themselves with when they entered the Church.
So they thought the doors were cursed by the devil, but wouldn't get rid of them? Is this a case of keep your friends close and your enemies closer or more of a "lets stir the pot so the parishioners think they need us even more" kind of deal?
I don't really like the theory of Esmerelda cursing Frollo during her dance. I think Frollo was just a creepy, prejudice, and perverted dude anyways. He was so absorbed in his self and thought he could do no wrong, therefore it had to be "the witch's" fault.
I cannot believe that no one made the connection between the 666 in the ironwork and the superstition of the devil doors. I do not subscribe to that line of thinking, but that is how it starts.
Neat history about the doors, you just used a very poor jumping off point with Quasi's mother. Romanis (more commonly called by the slur gypsy) were commonly considered in League with the devil thought of as feral people. You connecting the Doors with a Romani implies that she in part is at fault for her death, especially since you completely omit the fact that this happened in the dead of night in winter. The priest would've had to hear her, get his cloak, get to the doors, and open them in a matter of seconds to save her. That just cannot happen.
It could be possible he inherited recessive genes. In the original book however, Quasimodo was a stolen child iirc, with similar fair skinned features.
Uhh can we stop perpetuating the idea that all Romani have ties to witchcraft?? We don't, sure some do but not all of us. And I think it's wrong to suggest that Frollo's infatuation and lust for Esmeralda is her fault.
Esmerelda didn't curse Frollo with anything. He was a deeply repressed hollier than thou type who realized he liked the way Esmerlda danced a little too much and blamed his unwanted feelings he believed to be sinful on her. This is pretty common, Frollo was an incel icon before that term became widely known.
Hello I could have misunderstood a sentence because I speak French but did you say that the hunchback sculptor employed by the Church lived in the same time as Victor Hugo ? 😶 If its the case I am lost because the cathedral was built between 1163 and 1345 and Victor Hugo was born in 1802 and die in 1885 and he wrote the "hunchback of notre dame" in 1831 so maybe Hugo through research new about that sculptor but they never lived in the same time. If I misunderstood please don't pay attention to this comment 😉
The young man who crafted the doors most likely had some kind of underlying health issue, he worked himself to the bone to get the doors completed quickly and beautifully. All the added stress due to the horrific rumors and people doubting his work may have worsened whatever underlying condition he had. Many such underlying conditions to worsen with stress, it most likely wasn’t that he made a deal with the devil at all. Most likely people being so cruel, unkind, discourteous and spreading vicious lies is what led to his early demise. They killed a very talented artist with merely the words they spoke. This is why things like bullying and cyber bullying should be taken seriously. Basically that’s what this amounts to. He was too good and people got jealous. So they spread horrific rumors mayhaps not even out of superstition, but instead envy, greed and jealousy. When mob mentally set in everyone just went along with it, because they were all too ignorant and quite frankly judgemental. It was their own moronic idiocy that took an incredible craftsman from this world to soon. For those who claimed to appreciate the holy word of the Almighty it’s a sick perception. You’re supposed to leave the judgments to the big man upstairs and his angels, not pass judgment yourself and do as you see fit. Kind of warped. In reality this poor young man probably kept himself up all hours of the day and night working endlessly to try to get it done. Knowing the job was so large and so important and what it could mean for the rest of his life, he probably suffered severe insomnia. He probably knew the only way he was going to sleep well was after the doors were completed. Instead of being able to be proud of his accomplishments that was taken from him, All because humans are too stupid and pass judgment to quickly. If they don’t understand something or don’t like the way it’s done, they automatically assume someone is toxic or bad. This happens with everything from artwork to even the comments people make online. They assume everyone acts as they do and is only capable of what they are. The truth is everyone’s mind works and functions differently. Everyone has a different capability level especially depending on what task it involves. It’s sad to even with his much as mankind has achieved, they still can’t seem to wrap their head around the fact it different people are just that, THEY ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE!!! Meaning everyone has their own way of thinking, their own special talents, their own faults and their own way of going about things. Until humanity learns this, there will never be any kind of true peace in this world. This world will remain a toxic and terrible environment for everyone who lives here and this includes more than just humans. The dumb idiocy our race causes affects even the animals of this planet. Well the term it’s not all about you should apply to the entire human race, just because that’s the automatic assumption you make about someone else doesn’t mean it’s true either. Just because someone acts differently than you doesn’t mean they’re entitled necessarily. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re toxic. It just means they have a different way of thinking and a different way of going about things. Yes there are legitimately some people in this world were absolutely toxic, however there are people who are completely misunderstood in this world. Whether it’s comments online or even how they function as a business model or with their artwork. At the end of the day every human is different, what we all need to wrap our heads around is learning to work together with our differences and not judging them. We need to learn how to recognize and appreciate those differences no matter what they may be. Rejecting these differences doesn’t help anyone, instead it only makes this world even more toxic. If humanity ever does fall, it will be through these narcissistic and idiotic ideologies. It will be the lack of ability to adapt to each other, Rather is an anything that comes naturally. Mankind will ultimately be what destroys itself unless it learns to work with itself. This case is just proof of that, nothing more and less. It’s just a sad reminder that humanity would prefer to pull it’s self apart than work together.
Imagine making a ten minute video about this. She just knocked, she didn't push or pull the door (didnt know the doors were open). And everything went way too quick for anybody to react. Churches are big. That's it. RUclipsrs are kinda desperate for content
Deluxe makes allot of BS theory videos. And worse still, the ones that are so obviously wrong they disable the comments so people cannot point out all the flaws.
Those doors are solid AF and locked at night because it was the dead of winter. The priest simply didn’t get to her in time (he has to be able to hear her crying out for help (and he was probably fast asleep at the time), throw on a robe and shoes, then get the keys and run down - all before Frollo gets to her on his horse), but he came in time to save Baby Quasi
I think God and the Devil are one and the same being. And He himself never pretended to be anything else. It was the humans who couldn't phantom their creator, a being that, like nature, is inherently chaotic and by human standards heartless and cruel, to be anything other then a benevolent father and thusly invented the devil to explain away everything about His actions that we don't understand or approve off. Never forget that the Bible, Torah and Quran where all written by humans with a, through their mortality by default limited understanding and, through their cultures and individual life experiences, biased worldview. (As where all religious text ever written for that matter, including all the non-abrahamic ones.)
Actually the real fall of the catholic church came from the bourgias( sorry for the mispell). The catholic church never recovered after their removal. Alot of the pedophilia and current behaviors greatly worsened after their reign. It was getting slightly better before them then boom. Instant regression.
As a fellow witch and Pagan, I believe it has nothing to do with divinity. It has everything to do with the time period, control, and power. And who knows, those doors could be heavier than the rest in the building do to the amount of metalworking that went into it. I believe that just like all Gods, the Christian God both helps and harms his people. The Christian God would not be under being the devil, and quite frankly, I'm surprised he allows so much hate of his own son who only had a different opinion and loved God so much that he would make sure we all were able to join God again. It makes no sense in my mind how that all works out, but you know, everyone has their own theories and stories regarding any religion.
I......But why would she do that? That doesn't even make sense. In this situation she would only do more harm to her people and herself. That theory is extremely victim blamey and just stupid-
It always just seemed logical to me that the Archdeacon just simply didn't get there in time. Quasi's mother knocked at the door, but barely had seconds to wait for a response before Frollo got to her - during which time the Archdeacon had to wake from sleep or otherwise put aside whatever he was doing, grab a cloak and go to investigate. Naturally, by the time he could get there, it was already too late for her. That's some interesting history about the cathedral though. The whole thing about those so-called Devil Doors just sounds like the kind of superstition that would have arisen around the Middle Ages. People in those days were superstitious, as you say, and they believed lots of weird things. Here was a man who worked himself literally to death in overheated conditions to complete those doors in record time, and the public put it down to a deal with the devil because they simply didn't know any better. Who put that rumour about in the first place? Perhaps somebody was jealous of his skill and so spread malicious gossip? Who's to know? It's rather like the twisted spire at Chesterfield Parish Church in England. It's still debated why the spire ended up at such an odd angle. Unskilled workers (due to Black Death), unseasoned timbers, uneven sunlight exposure, etc But of course, in those days, there were also some more sinister theories, some of which involved the Devil - in which is was said a blacksmith mis-shod one of his hoofs, causing him to leap over the spire in pain, angrily kicking it out of shape. Other stories said the Devil either pulled the spire out of shape out of sheer spite or just sneezed violently from the smell of incense as he sat on its pinnacle.
I mean she never actively tries to open the doors; she runs up to them before knocking, turns to see Frollo, and tries to run away again. I didn't even know this was a question people would ask, as most people would just assume the doors were locked at the time.
This is such an underrated disney movie. It's been my favorite since I was a kid. I think it didnt get super popular because it doesnt have a traditional disney princess in it. But quasimodo and esmeralda were real people I believe
Okay gonna say this Frodo is actually a combination of 2 characters from the book. So it wasn’t a curse that was placed on him. In fact it was the Older brother that was madly in love with her from first sight. Frodo claim he wasn’t sure on why he fell for her a Gypsy, to his younger brother, who’s a priest in the book. Who than told him to try to get her to convert and marry him by the religious laws. Which brings in the guard who supposed to be this womanizer and seduce her. One event leads to another and they all die in the story. But the book was all focused on Esmeralda as the main character. Honestly reading the book is better than me summing it up.
Now I'm excited to show this to my Gramma next time I visit her. I like to use her Roku to go to RUclips and show her interesting videos based on the movies and shows she'd show me as a child. This one will most likely be more interesting to her than the last video I showed her, which tried to figure out how many safety problems were in the factory of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
I thought the comment that people at the time were very superstitious especially churchgoers was inaccurate since the Church was against superstition as giving power to things which belong only to God. They also showed repeatedly during discussion of Notre Dame's building the facade of a church that is not Notre Dame. I found interesting the discussion of how metalworking craftsmen worked hard and long at their trade in creating things that are artworks themselves.
If the devil doors are that spectacular it makes me think it might be the main entrance. In my home town the main entrance of the Catholic church (not Cathedral!) are only used on three occasions: baptisms, weddings and funerals. I don't know if this is universal though. Interesting story. I'll be sure to look out for the door next time I'm in Paris.
I know the g word was used in both the movie and the books, but it is derogatory. I wish the actual term of Romani was used instead in this video. Still, one of my favorite movies and this was a well crafted video.
many painters, sculptors and muralists went insane during some of their projects. There is no other way. The pressure is too much to make everything perfect and artists become so involved in the project that they forget to eat, sleep, have a social life or all of the above.
Back then churches didn't lock the doors. A person seeking sanctuary had to yell it as they knocked. Once admitted, a person could be granted up to 30 days protection regardless of what was going. Heavy iron and 2 inch thick doors can take a few minutes to open. Hence why there are stories of people dying on church steps.
A lot of people are born with deformaties, it's not exactly impossible that a deformed guy worked there in past hundreds of years! I think it's awful for people to blame that poor guy who put all the effort to make such beautiful craft. They were backwards then but we know better now so why make out it could be true? Don't be ridiculous!

Wait.. did he just say esmeralda put a curse on frollo to act all creepy and being obsessed with her.. boiii u crazy ain't no way no women is gonna curse a guy she doesn't want to be obsessed with her...
If I was Quasimodo and somebody made fun of me for having a hunchback I’d be like yeah you better watch your posture also happened to You too and get them all freaked out.
I barely remember watching this movie but I think that in my mind door's don't open because she don't use handle or any push to try but as I said I watch it long time ago. Now I think that maybe they was locked because of time in the day/night 😅
I'd wish to know the name that quasi would have been lovingly called by his mother and a theory that he and esmeralda may have been cousins or the same traveling tribe.
That’s the church for you. This poor man worked so hard to create the beautiful doors and the church accused him of devils influence because they were too impressive. The church never ceases to amaze me. He was probably killed by the church guards or could have died from exhaustion or a broken heart.
"some people think the fire in 2019 my have been linked to evil spirits" ah, well, about that... Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn 😱😱😱😱
IDK I always thought the doors didn't open because it was SO fast. I mean a few seconds is hard for normal doors let alone giant heavy ones like that.
That’s what I thought. I highly doubt that the priest of the church was right at the door when Quasimodo’s mother arrived.
Yeah, and the Archdeacon did come out later
I thought it was because the priest didn’t get there in time because he would have had to safely drop what he was doing, get his cloak, open the heavy doors and go outside. A process that ate up too much valuable time.
Catholic churches are meant to be left unlocked so people can come in at all hours to pray, as well as the constant presence of those wo pray before the Eucharist. The way my dad put it, the Lord is never let unattended.

Imagine going through all that work, searing heat and probably even passing out at the strain and crafting magnificent doors just for people to blame the devil for it. I feel bad for the guy.
I imagine that he just worked very hard on them because he wanted to construct something beautiful for God.

Yeah I can’t imagine that he was taking great care of himself during that time
Also his mother didn't pull on the doors, only knocked.
I remember her grabbing the ring-handles and pulling desperately to open them before frantically pounding on the doors begging for sanctuary.
EDIT: Just rewatched the scene. She really didn't have time to try anything beyond knocking...
Even if she did try pulling on them, doors like that were heavy and she had a baby in her arms so, sadly, they wouldn't have even moved for her.

@@Karen-pk3uv Door handles. But apparently my memory is flawed and possibly substituting a scene from another film...
Poor guy, he did too good of a job and everyone got suspicious. The stone carver WAS Quasi. There is a whole documentary on him somewhere, I remember watching it. He wasn't anything like in the Disney movie, by far, but neither is Pocahontas.

Not to mention that by cursing him in that way, she would have practically knowingly doomed her people as it led to an even greater persecution of her people

Am I the only one that believes that frollo went through the devil doors . When the lava fell . He was in front of doors . Were those the devil doors ?
makes one wonder..
I think they were
Possibly since the lava / molten metal was meant to symbolize that hell had come to claim the man who believes he could buy his way into heaven with deeds alone and that his murder was justified.

I thought the doors didn’t open because the archdeacon didn’t get there in time.

Very well said!

I would have never thought this whole background story would explain that 1 little moment in the movie. You've got to love history.
It's not nearly as deep as what you're making it. But it is a cool story about the doors.
In times like that, superstition and rumors can make or break a person... and or could kill a person because he couldn't find any more work.
Disney's Quasimodo vs the book is like a blueberry vs nightshade berry.
Perhaps the young iron smith angered the older ones by producing such fine works. So they spread rumors about him dealing with the devil.
Now I can say much on the subject of the layout of Notre Dame, but if it was like many other Roman Catholic churches, holy water would have been by the doors for the patrons to bless themselves with when they entered the Church.

A lot of us assumed the priest was just late to open it. That's the most rational answer, plus it's a big building and he was on a horse

I cannot believe that no one made the connection between the 666 in the ironwork and the superstition of the devil doors. I do not subscribe to that line of thinking, but that is how it starts.
Imagine working yourself to death to make a fancy door and everyone calls it the devil's work 😔
Neat history about the doors, you just used a very poor jumping off point with Quasi's mother.
What bothered me most that Quasimodo doesn't have any stereotypical Gypsy features, darker hair or skin.
It could be possible he inherited recessive genes.
In the original book however, Quasimodo was a stolen child iirc, with similar fair skinned features.
@@herbalwolfooo5413No in the book Esmeralda was a stolen child. Quasimodo is abandoned at the church in the book and adopted by Frollo
I feel so bad for that door's creators.
A FRENCH FRYE!!!! I'm never letting this go. That's hilarious!!
What with French calthoic church having dealing with the devil?
Imagine making a ten minute video about this. She just knocked, she didn't push or pull the door (didnt know the doors were open). And everything went way too quick for anybody to react. Churches are big. That's it. RUclipsrs are kinda desperate for content
Deluxe makes allot of BS theory videos. And worse still, the ones that are so obviously wrong they disable the comments so people cannot point out all the flaws.
Jinkies, Frollo & Quasimodo just needed some Scooby Snacks & they would've been fine. 😋
A French Fry 😆😆😆😆 I know your not talk in about fries, but that’s what I’m thinking of
1:39 did he say a French Fry in Paris? 🧐😆
Yup
As a Witch I can very much believe/know there's ties to their devil in the catholic church [explains so much of their terrible behavior]
God and the devil are not the same
@@highlyopinionated5611 not the same
Actually the real fall of the catholic church came from the bourgias( sorry for the mispell).
Unskilled workers (due to Black Death), unseasoned timbers, uneven sunlight exposure, etc
But of course, in those days, there were also some more sinister theories, some of which involved the Devil - in which is was said a blacksmith mis-shod one of his hoofs, causing him to leap over the spire in pain, angrily kicking it out of shape.
I always thought it was because she was voiced by the same lady who voices Cartman's mom and they just assumed he would grow up to be Eric Cartman.
I love how 50% of the comment section is like: "HE JUST DIDNT GET THERE IN TIME"
This is such an underrated disney movie.
This is really cool
I thought the comment that people at the time were very superstitious especially churchgoers was inaccurate since the Church was against superstition as giving power to things which belong only to God. They also showed repeatedly during discussion of Notre Dame's building the facade of a church that is not Notre Dame. I found interesting the discussion of how metalworking craftsmen worked hard and long at their trade in creating things that are artworks themselves.
Imagine being so good at your job that people think it must be the devils work
If the devil doors are that spectacular it makes me think it might be the main entrance.
Well that’s a compliment your masterpiece is so amazing that they think I a supernatural force helped you
I remember hearing about the devil doors on Top 10.
So some dude hyperfixed really hard on making fancy artistic doors and got accused of dealing with the devil.
He confuses that empath means witch they can b the same but they can also b separate one dont mean the other also ur talking hex which dont mean dancing a group is required to dance for demonic curses
That's weird. There is no reference to these devil doors in the book.
1:23 correct me if I'm wrong. But that picture isn't the Notre dame.
Can you even hear knocking through such big heavy doors if you weren't standing right next to it?
Wait.. did he just say esmeralda put a curse on frollo to act all creepy and being obsessed with her.. boiii u crazy ain't no way no women is gonna curse a guy she doesn't want to be obsessed with her...
It was like the middle of the night in a giant building, it takes me a minute to open my door in my small home
I barely travel anymore whenever it comes to flying coach out of the country.
If they accuse him of devil worshiper yeah i would be upset to
He probally stopped eating
.....I can't wait till RUclips puts subtitles on man...I really. Really need to know the answer to this!!
Molds, aren't a new concept. But these dors are beautiful regardless.
Church go-ers: This is pretty!
Church go-ers:
Church go-ers: That's suspicious, that's weird
"some people think the fire in 2019 my have been linked to evil spirits"
ah, well, about that... I did sing there 5 days beforehand.
*non-Christian agnostic and sang "swing low sweet chariot"
jk, jk well, did sing that but like, I don't think I'd be the cause haha... also, wow, 2019... what a year, ronavirus started then too, do ya think maybe it's all linked?
Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn 😱😱😱😱
Has anyone seen how big Notre dame is? An older man had to get to the door and was probably asleep since it was late at night.
