    The square inch method sounds interesting (now I only have to figure out how to put that into a centimeter scale - we dont use inches in Germany)

    • @DenaTollefson
      @DenaTollefson  Год назад +1

      Hi Manuel! Yes, this method can be used with the centimeter scale and Euros as well!
      Say you sold a previous painting or drawing sized at 31cm x 41 cm for 127 Euros:
      You would take 127 Euros and divide by 31 cm and divide that number by 41 cm and get a Euro Metric Multiplicative rate of Euro 0.1 per square cm
      Now say you had previously sold a 31cm x 41cm work of art for 317 Euros.
      You would take 317 Euros and divide by 31 cm and divide that number by 41 cm and get a Euro Metric Multiplicative rate of Euro 0.25 per square cm
      So if you wanted to then sell a 20cm x 20 cm work of art using the Euro Metric Multiplicative rate of Euro 0.25 per square cm, you would take 0.25 Euro x 20cm x 20cm = and charge 100 Euros for a 20cm x 20 cm artwork using that rate.
      Hope this helps!!! Hugs to you Manuel

    Here's the conundrum for Me in pricing Collage pieces... very different 'work times' go into My collages, as opposed to 'painting/drawing'. All my collages are analog and some take longer to find the 'pieces' required to make the entire resulting image happen; starting with 1 main image and then searching from there.
    For example... one collage created is 36x48". It took 1 YEAR to FIND all the pieces to make it happen from the 'image in my mind' of what I wanted to see happen... a "Wild, Wild West" theme for a former Cowboy (searching through books, magazines, posters, old letters, etc); 2 weeks to cut out each piece (some very tiny detailed cutting with a scalpel bladed knife) and arrange them into a cohesive image. It then took 12 hours to glue down (the image is laid out in its entirety and then VERY carefully, with tweezers, each piece is glued down w/tiny doubled-sided sticky squares cut to fit... no gel medium... without moving any of the other pieces.) Each piece I create matches the 'Narrative' I've written for it... they go hand-in-hand. This is not mixed media... no paint involved.
    The square inch method would not work... maybe the hybrid method would come closer. I know this is a very different venue than what you do, but I intend to get my work in galleries at some point... I've had rave reviews from many, including from an Artist & Graphic Designer with a Masters in Fine Art Degree that stated very kind words and told Me I would go far with 'My Style'... MOST encouraging... grateful and humbled at the same time. LOL
    I am open to any suggestion you may have, if any, even though this is not in the proverbial 'wheelhouse' for what you create... which is MASTERY, to say the least! If you have a video that addresses this sort of thing, please advise.
    And Thank You SO much!
    MUCH Love & RESPECT... Deborah

      Hi Deborah! Agreed, the square inch method would not be a good pricing fit for you. I think the hybrid method, using the artist comparison method, discussed in this video "How to Price Your Artwork Part 2" ruclips.net/video/e341t5zYz9Y/видео.html
      as a baseline, and following the principles in "Part 1 Do's and Don'ts" ruclips.net/video/qTaHo3eyqeM/видео.html would be the way to go. What is nice about the artist comparison method is you don't have to be a painter or draw to use this method- it can apply to literally every art method/art medium.

    Thank you for this helpful video Dena, the hybrid method seems more appropriate for many professional artists. I was always recommended the square inch method using 1 euro per inch and it was never including my time, materials, etc so I stopped making my artwork available for sale.
    The shipping costs are terrible too and you don’t recommend we include shipping costs for clients ? So we have to absorb the cost? Or add it into our materials cost?
    Very informative 😊

    • @DenaTollefson
      @DenaTollefson  Год назад

      Hi Rebecca! Thank you so much! Yes, shipping can be a big factor, especially international shipping. One option is to have your retail price and then add shipping on top of that for each client, which would be very specific. Another way to go is to have a lump sum you add based on an estimated average shipping cost, which would be a generalized way to go. A third option is to build it into your pricing and use the Time and Materials Method, which is described here ruclips.net/video/TELfhhqzL_g/видео.html

    Hi Dena, I've tried the square inch method of pricing before and found that people where I'm able to sell, think my artwork is too expensive. They won't buy. So, I began using a combination of things. Not too convoluted for figuring. I take the cost of materials, time to pain/create and then add to it a $15 or $20/ hour. Because most of what I sell locally is small pieces, I find this gives a pricing that seems to fit. I have some people who still think it's too much but, I suppose that will have to do. A small 6 x 6 is $40 and 8x8 is $45. To give you an example. I'm thinking that my larger pieces should go priced differently. A 10 x20 say, is $155. But I'm thinking I need a different pricing. I had one 10 x 20 in a show, recently and was surprised that mine was one of 3-4 that was the least expensive. I have a difficult time thinking of pricing my work higher. Because, I can't see people buying. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places to sell the bigger ones. Ugh...this is such a confusing process.

    • @DenaTollefson
      @DenaTollefson  Год назад +2

      Hi Brenda! Thank you for your excellent comment. Agreed art pricing is difficult for sure!! I encourage you to keep looking for the right venue to sell at where your artwork is not the most expensive, and not the least expensive (that usually is one indicator of a good fit) Persistence is key!!! How would you price for different medias,I pencil draw and want to know how to price pencil drawing from a 9×12 art pad.

    • @DenaTollefson
      @DenaTollefson  Год назад +2

      Hi! Thank you for coming to my water lilies real time painting live stream today! For this pricing your artwork question, You can price your pencil drawings the same way you would a painting- 9x12 art pads are 9 inches x12 inches = 108 square inches. So if all your drawings are the same size, you would need to decide if they are all similar in complexity- for example, are some just sketches, and others are super detailed? If they are all of a similar consistent complexity, then the square inch pricing method would be a good fit. If you find you have a lot of variability in how much time and effort is put into each drawing, then I would recommend you go with the Time and Materials approach- a link to the Time and Materials Method for pricing your drawings is here ruclips.net/video/TELfhhqzL_g/видео.html
      Hopefully this helps. Please let me know if you have any follow on questions. Take care!!

      Hi Jen! I hear you, small work tends to take a much longer time to create compared to larger work. With this in mind, you can price your smaller works with a greater factor, using the Hybrid Method discussed at the end of this video instead of a straight-up square inch pricing. Another option I might recommend is to use either the Best Artist Comparision Method (Part 2 of this series) or even a Time and Materials method (Part 3 of this series) where you would determine ahead of time what you want your hourly rate to come out to and then price accordingly. Hopefully one of these methods works well for you. Please follow up with any questions!! Take care Jen
