Hey Anoosha, thanks for your great contents ! I'm a full-time children's book illustrator from a third world country so I totally could relate to what you said about getting low budgets because of my location... But it's all a matter of being confident enough and trusting in your ability to create amazing works ! I can say I'm proud of myself for making it into the traditional publishing world and getting represented, but it's never a definitive win because we artists are always learning and growing. Keep up the great content ! Love from Madagascar ! Sawyer
Hi Anoosha, could you do a video talking about working with studios like Disney, Netflix, PBS etc. How do you ask for work for your portfolio when the project is completed, what are you allowed to use and what not to use.
@@AmnaAbbas04 I'll note that for my character design work (for the studios you mentioned), since I do development work (early exploration design work), I'm never allowed to share that work. :( For full-time projects there is a bit more leniency if you ask, but I haven't had a lot of experience in those positions. I have a secret password-protected page in my portfolio which includes that work, so if animation recruiters need to see my portfolio, I direct them there.
@@AnooshaSyed Im currently working with an animation studio in Pakistan, and I wanted to know if I leave mid project (due to personal reasons), how will I acquire the objects and assets I designed and all the shots I animated from key frames to clean up? Is there any official process or will it vary from studio to studio? It would be unfortunate to have worked 3 years on this film and nothing to show for it.
I’m right at the edge where I feel I have the skills to jump off! I published a comic, and learned print on demand! And all this info is making me more confident thank you for your time!!
Thank you for your transparency and thank you for sharing your experience! I already know I'll come back to this video from time to time just to try and learn more about how to price my work :"D (also your voice is always so soothingggg)
This is the most thorough pricing video I've seen, thank you for your work Anoosha! Being a freelance illustrator based in France, it's super interesting to hear about market prices from other countries and how the industry work elsewhere!
Anoosha, you are awesome and the art community is lucky to have someone who is willing to lift others up and be transparent to help people make a sustainable living doing art. Absolutely!! I have always been able to ask an artist for advice; if I don't get a response I understand that they are probably just busy and not out of malice.
Hi Anoosha. This is superb advice! I know I'm 3 years late, but I was just watching your video because I'm stuck with pricing a fully illustrated book cover art for an indie author. I've done 2 covers for him already, but each time they get more and more complex. The 3rd one I finished illustrating the front cover (with various characters, effects, backgrounds etc), but I felt it was a bit underpriced. Now I'm doing the back cover, and I'm pricing this separately because author wants something different for the back (which I'm taking as a separate illustration). I break each illustration Concept Phase and Final Phase (line art+coloring+effects etc) because each is its own beast. Concept Phase we're brainstorming ideas and I'm sending him many sketches until he's happy. Final phase is where it all comes together, and anything that didn't work in concept is updated here. I'm having a hard time pricing each phase up front, because the art evolves so much from initial talk, and I find myself putting in more work than I initially intended and planned. Ex: Artist will find a pose of a character awkward, and they;ll want to keep changing it until it's right. I can't foresee this before I start, or even in sketch phase, so it's hard to give just a flat fee upfront. I can charge hourly, and even give a price AFTER each phase is done, but my issue is that he'll think I'm taking advantage of him and racking up the price over every little thing. I don't want to break our relationship. However considering that these are complex projects with not a definite timeframe, I can justify an hourly rate if it comes to it. I would just like to know what a happy medium would be in this circumstance. This is an open-ended question for all. Any advice will help from any illustrators out there (and totally fine if not because I am late to this chat lol).
I think setting up some boundaries at the beginning of the project in the contract might be beneficial (check out my contract video for this). Having an agreed number of concepts to send (5 max maybe) and two rounds of revisions for each stage could be a starting point. And if they need more, then an additional revision fee would be required. This can make sure that there are limits set to your work and make the client more aware of their decisions. Otherwise, if the client needs that unlimited use of your time then an hourly rate might work better!
This is the best pricing video I have ever watched! Thank you SO MUCH for all of your hard work. I appreciate it so much! I am really happy that you have made this channel.

Saaaame. I asked an artist friend, who was working in a similar line of client work, what I should charge because it was my first freelance thing. All he would respond with was "what ever you think is fair" and refused to give me any more info. I understand it's a touchy subject, but how are new artists supposed to know what IS a fair price unless we know what others are charging??? This is how clients take advantage of inexperienced workers and I'm sure it hurts senior artists too since people can get cheaper work from those who are ignorant of what is a fair wage.

Thank you sooooooooo much for your advises and experiences! Is so important to have videos like this one that are truly helpful for artists and illustrators all over the world! xx
Hi Anoosha, Thank you so much for this wonderful content! It has immediately made me feel much more confident in figuring out pricing for my digital art which I'm just starting to pursue professionally. So thank you, thank you, thank you! This is super helpful.
thank you SO much. I recently worked on my first commissioned piece, it was a logo. I ended up charging Rs. 350 for it because I was afraid anything more than that would be overcharging. It was after all just a simple logo. And then I see other artists, just as new as me, charging Rs. 1000 for designing logos and people being willing to pay that much and that was such a shock to me but ultimately my own fault. Which is precisely why I'm here and this helped a lot. Thank you!
Thank you for this video Anoosha and thank you so much for highlighting third world and POC illustrators. It's difficult to be taken seriously when most clients still have the mentality of us being "cheap foreign labor." It's also so difficult to break into the industry knowing that we don't have the same access to resources as first world artists. This was incredibly helpful, thank you so much!
The artist undercharging is really only a problem for the artist. The client would love this. Having to pay less for a service is always good for the buyer. The seller, though, has to operate at a loss. Some artists may actually take advantage of this and intentionally reduce prices as a promotion, but once they get a stable stream of clients, they will jack up the prices at a more sustainable level.
Thank you for this! this is so informative and straight forward. I'm so glad to see a fellow Torontonian making it in the arts. will be starting up my art work for sale soon
Thank you for sharing a lot of resources! This is so helpful and insightful as someone who started as a hobbyist and is looking to be a full time illustrator.
Thank you so much Anoosha! This video was amazing and full of really helpful tips! It’s definitely better than the pricing tips I received at University.
Thank you so much for this video Anoosha! You're a life safer! I took so many notes while watching this video and I'm feeling much more confident now about pricing my work! Thank you so much!

Thank you!
You're so welcome!
I'm so glad it was helpful!
This is so amazingly helpful, thank you for putting in SO MUCH WORK to put this video together!
Thank you for this! this is so informative and straight forward. I'm so glad to see a fellow Torontonian making it in the arts. will be starting up my art work for sale soon
