My favourite picture book at the moment is Du iz tak? By Carson Ellis. It's a story written in a made-up language about some insects that find something in the ground, and are trying to figure out what it is. The illustrations in it are beautiful and each page shows the same scene as the seasons change and characters come and go. It's such a great book to use for teaching because it helps teach students critical thinking skills and it levels the playing field for students who are still learning English! And I truly believe it could be used with students from K-12! There's so much you can do with it!
@@AnooshaSyed I have been using the book at the start of every year in my French classes! I read the book to the kids and we talk about strategies that we can use to help us figure out the story and then how we can apply those strategies to learning French!
as someone who struggles with generalized anxiety and dreads unpredictability, your in-depth style videos like this are SO comforting to watch. Makes me feel way less stressed about getting into illustration as a career 💗💗
You really sold this book to me. I ordered a copy and it just arrived today! It's beautiful and I'm so happy to have it as part of my collection! I've been working on opinion writing with my students lately, and this will be a great book to help teach that. I also just recently saw that Other Words for Home is a YRCA 2022 nominee. Congratulations!
Thank you for this! I'm a graphic designer and a friend asked me about potentially illustrating a children's book, which I would absolutely love to do but don't know what the process is supposed to be like. I don't see myself jumping into this as a full time career, but I definitely want to give it a whirl and this was so helpful for figuring out where to begin.
Dear Anoosha, thank you for giving so selflessly. You are really one of my favorite RUclipsrs at the moment. You have a kind spirit and provide such helpful content. I hope you have a beautiful new year and achieve everything you've set your heart on this year ♡
This was so lovely to watch! I don't even know why it popped up on my feed but I'm really glad it did. It was so informative and wholesome and I really like the stuff you mentioned about putting in Easter eggs and interesting bits in the background. I remember how much I loved spotting those as a kid!
THANK YOU for this video, Anoosha! I've been an illustrator for 30 years (before the current days of publishing) and I really appreciate your informative videos! You are incredibly talented and kind to share your experiences.
Hi! Your content is absolutely wonderful and so appreciated I am an artist myself, but not skilled in the kind of art used for picture books/spreads and I'm trying to work on that so I can illustrate my own book one day, and seeing this process is immensely helpful. Also I am part of a program at a children's hospital that gives out books to the patients, and I handed out 'I Am Perfectly Designed' several times; love it (everyone especially loves the colors)!
Amazing content, you're extremely gifted and thanks for taking the time out to share with us your powerful creations!! May God continue to bless your labor of love and passion, its your purpose and a great gift to our world at large. You Are Such a Blessing!!
So excited for this video! I love your channel ❤️ Your videos have really helped me in my illustration work and gaining confidence 🙌 Favorite children’s book is hard... but I’d have to go with Where the Wild Things Are

I am not an illustrator but I still learn alot from your videos when you talk through your process explaining your thoughts and design decisions to aid the visual storytelling. I love the videos in this series. Would also like to see a video about negotiations.✨
Thank you so much for all the helpful content! This is genuinely useful information and thank you for the taking the time to explain it all! You're such a talented illustrator❤️
this video was so informative and eye opening! as an almost-graduating art student, it's been really hard pinpointing a specific field that i'd like to work in, especially when there's not a lot of information out there about what it's like working in those specific fields. i absolutely love illustration, and this video has definitely put picture book illustration in my radar of things i'd like to do! thank you for making such a comprehensive and easy to follow video documenting your process and experience. 💞✨
This video is amazing 🌟❤️ Thank you so much, I wanna try turning a "book series" I wrote for my little sisters into a professional series. I tried making a picture book years ago but the illustration process was very difficult so I moved onto to writing a novel which is still in progress. And I agree, representation is important and it does feel like a responsibility to make sure everyone is included. Also I love the fact that your book has those cute little letters 🌟 I had a winnie the pooh letter book and loved it so much
Hi Anoosha, I wanted to take a minute and thank you for all your youtube videos. I am a retired nurse who has been taking art classes in fine art at my local college until covid 19 shutdown. But after watching your videos I am going to buy an XP-Pen 22R pro and I am going to illustrate a graphic novel I have had in my head for years. Thank you so much.
Love this video. Such a detailed introduction to your work process. Really helpful to other illustrators too. Please make more videos like this. Enjoyed watching and learning. Keep up the good work. 👍
I'm gonna be working on my Graphic Novel pitch next year for my Bachelors and just generally for entering into adult illustrator life your videos have been so helpful 🥺 I've already reccomended them to like my entire class haha you're my comfort RUclipsr fr
Thank you for sharing the creative process of illustrating a picture book. As a writer, I'm curious about the illustrator's working process. That is so interesting!
That is such a helpful tip about using Procreate with an iPad to create the art. I am currently using a HUION graphic pen display but it is so much bulkier than an iPad.
This is such a huge masterwork. I'm super glad that I came across this channel! And this may seem random, but as a musician and someone that deals in audio, I found your use of those mouse clicks each time you put a point on the screen genius. 💡

Thank you so much for this video :) I came across your channel by chance a few weeks ago and you have re-ignited my passion for picture book writing and illustration. Have a beautiful day!!
As a new illustration to the children's book world, I will add that sometimes you will get asked to do an art test by the art director if they're deciding between different illustrators or if they'd like to see what you can do with the story. If they love the work they will add that fee to the flat fee in the contract as I'm learning with my agent. As far as favorite books, I'd have to say the Stinky Cheese Man And Other Fairly Stupid Tales because it was such a clever story involving fairy tales and I enjoyed my mother reading it. Another great video with great advice as always. Thank you!
That’s right! I think it’s also important that art tests should always be paid; I’ve seen some publishers try to get artists do free tests and that’s unacceptable!!
I think one of my favorites is probably Tessa the Teacher, which I read when I was about 6. I then became instantly obsessed with the styles and small details and attempted to draw in the same way. It’s a wonderful book, for little kids but I can’t get over it 🥰

This was an awesome video. The only let down is that I would've loved to get the dimensions for the entire spread instead of a single page. That I feel is very important for Landscape picture books.
I am so happy you’ve shared this video! Very informative! Thank you so much! If you can, I’d really love to see your process of negotiating with your clients. Im guessing you’d have to collect info from your agent as well 🙈anyway I look forward to seeing more content from you. Thanks once again lovely 🙏🏽🥰
I appreciated your comment about illustrating books with your ethnicity. I understand this since I grew up in South Korea. Most of my childhood was spent among Asians.
Another very helpful video. Thank you! I think my greatest fear is coloring. I just don't know how it will look. My fear is that everything will look super saturated and/or over/under processed. Or that when it prints everything will look off. 😣
Thank you so much!! I guess after you finish painting you can always fine tune it or adjust on photoshop of you feel the colors are off. Printing is such a hassle, but I think it’s just trial and error and figuring out the best settings for your printer
