    • @MTStingray
      @MTStingray 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@fluffy_walrus Except it's pretty obvious he can't change the past. "The past is already written; the ink is dry." Everything Bran was going to do in the past was always going to happen, so nothing he does will change anything, as it was always going to be. He was always going to call out to his father at the Tower of Joy. He was always going to warg into Hodor and cause Hodor to become Hodor (otherwise Hodor would still have been Willis).
      Likewise Arya was always going to get that dagger. It wasn't a product of his green seeing, it was as simple as him just giving it to her and knowing what she would do with it.

      @@AnkokuDragon How can you say that this episode had suspense when every time a character is about to be killed by 8 zombies they cut away, and the moment they cut back that character is perfectly fine. It happens like 24 times throughout the episode and after a while you just sort of mentally check out.
      As for this being something "new" and "different", it certainly was that. I've never before seen an episode that so expertly killed the themes of it's own show.
      Also you can't just write off good strategy as an "extra bonus" that doesn't matter. Even if we pretend that everything else in this episode wasn't equally as shit, GoT has always established itself as a show where smart strategic thinking is rewarded and poor planning and mistakes gets you killed. Until s8 this show had consequences. Remember that this plan was devised by Tyrion, Jon Snow, Jamie, and many other characters who could be listed as some of the smartest and most strategically minded people in westeros. To have THESE CHARACTERS devise THIS PLAN isn't a thing you can just shrug off. It damages their characters heavily. I get that you liked it but stop talking out of your ass. this whole "put into perspective the differences of binge watching vs watching back in the day" is actually a really poor apologist argument that I've seen gain traction for many shows that have declined in quality drastically.
      there were people who watched S8 when it released and loved it. S&P would have likely reacted the same if they watched back then as they are now binge watching.

    • @TheRealRealMClovin
      @TheRealRealMClovin 11 месяцев назад +1

      Well if you remove season 8 sure it will be one of the greatest shows, not really worth watching if the ending sucks though. Also won't be that different, as on patreon they have already finished it and they are mad at the ending and how it went down XD
      It's like what David benioff and Dan themself said ironically in an interview, "A show is nothing without a good ending, even if you have a fantastic show, all of that means nothing if everything that leads up to it is a bad ending"
      Well they just ate their own words, literally XD
      But I agree for it's time before season 8 it was one of the greatest, even when I and probably others started notice a shift in quality from season 6-7 compared to the first 5 seasons, Season 6 and 7 are still up on top compared to other shows.

    I really agree with Spartan on the point of making more of Bran's storyline. In my opinion it would have been really awesome to see sort of a mental battle between the night king and Bran / Three Eyes Raven involving some of the visions about night walker origins or something, maybe through utilising Bran's warging ability to get into his mind. Presedence was already set with Hodor - so I really thought this was where it was going! As Spartan says this could be the distracting factor that makes Arya's kill more believable.

    Miguel Sapochnik, who directed this episode fought tooth and nail with D&D over the lack of deaths of main characters here. He wanted to kill Jorah in the initial charge along with the Dothraki to set the tone of "nobody is safe". He said he was up for killing everybody, but ultimately D&D wouldn't hear of it. Don't necessarily think everybody needed to die, but more deaths would definitely have been better as it would've shown how dangerous all of the prophecies about this war and the dead really are. Still feel the war with the Night King should've been the final 2 episodes too.

If Arya disappeared for the entire episode, to then appear with the face of a White Walker and stab the NK i wouldn've said: cool, unepxected, but it somehow makes sense, she is one of the faceless men, she somehow managed to get the face of a Walker. Or better, what if Arya took Bran's own face and layed there in his chair until the Night King reached Bran, then surprise-surprise, she swiftly gets up and stabs the fucker, then pulls down Bran's face to reveal it was her actually and that Bran sacrificed himself to give her his face... that would've still made little sense, because it wasn't freaking Arya the one who should've ended the NK, but at least it would've been original, unexpected, planned. Charge the dothraki into death and darkness head-on as your first move...
    10/10 strats big brain move
    For all the critiques;
    - The Dothraki are light cavalry, they have no armour, and therefore their purpose is to flank, retreat, flank etc. That charge was unjustified to the writers' incompetence.
    - The 'planned' scenario before Malisandra came out of nowhere was to charge the Dothraki into the skeletons with weapons that couldn't even neutralise them... this adds to how stupid the whole thing was, they were thrown in to die by the writers.
    - There was no kind of preparation to this battle, this is obvious. They had at least 2 days to dig fire ditches, to plant posts for visibility, to transform all blades into dragonglass blades, to set fire traps upon fire traps.
    But nah, all we got was *Muh Kween* , *don't have balls lololol* , *let's fuck* , *i got beef with blondie, blondie got beef with me*

      I feel like with the manpower they had, a better plan would have been to entrap the wights in a forest on the road to winterfell that they would then set afire to kill quite a portion of them. Simultaneously, you'd enlist every able body in the winter town and it's surrounding to dig the largest moat the north has ever seen around winterfell, fill it with pitch and wood, and once everyone has retreated to winter fell, set it aflame and rain arrows and catapults on any wight still walking while Jon and Dany deal with Viserion.

It kills the rewatchability of the series, kills the feeling that this was one of the great shows of all time. It all ends up in a moronic, anti-climatic ending that abandons every hint of foreshadowing, betrays every subplot and character, and smothers one's memory of GoT overall. Not just this (boring, stupid, dingy) ending to the "Ice" aspect of the song of fire and ice. But the remaining episodes as well. Hot garbage from this point to the end.

It should have been Jon or Bran that killed him, not someone who'd never seen him before and didn't know anything about him. It was also a huge missed opportunity, in terms of explaining what the meaning behind the white walker symbols was and why the night king wanted to rule. She was the last member of House Stark to return to Winterfell and the least involved in the preparations to fight. This comes perhaps a little bit out of left field. The showrunners later stated that they chose Arya to kill the Night King specifically to subvert expectations. Meaning that they set up seven and a half seasons of other people being more involved with this plot and Arya not being very involved with this plot only to throw it away for a “fooled you!” While I’m sure it was satisfying to the writers, it’s not very much fun for a viewer. When we invest years in watching characters realise the extent of their problems and seek to solve them, having the writers yank the payoff away right at the very end with a _*_“nope! Someone else solved it!’_*_ is not a good return."_
    _"Plus, while _*_“wow, wouldn’t have picked that!”_*_ is the end result, it’s not the _*_“I wouldn’t have picked that!”_*_ which comes from creative use of foreshadowing and careful structural and thematic development so that everything falls into place in an unexpected yet logical way. This is the “I wouldn’t have picked that!” which resulted from there being nothing to pick at all. It’s a plot twist divorced from the plot."_

Spartan or Pudgey will point out the largest plot hole, weak storytelling, or wasted potential and then follow it up with "this episode was fantastic". Also, I completely disagree that "any way the White Walkers are defeated would be unfulfilling". Spartan is lying when he said he didn't want Jon to 1v1 the Night King and win. That would have been epic. That was clearly where the story was going. They even bring up all of the stare offs and close calls between the Night King and Jon. It is a pretty clear attempt to "subvert expectations" to have Arya gain the ability to fly just so that she can kill the Night King while Jon... has a staring contest with a dragon... The thing about subverting expectations is that it can easily be done poorly, such as in this episode.

    what makes the dothraki scene even worse is that melisandre showed up at literally the last minute without anyone knowing. so the plan was to send them charging with just regular weapons, no flame, which we’ve been shown time and time again will not stop a single wight. so yea the plan was to lose thousands of soldiers while literally not killing 1 enemy. thanks d&d!

    Theon was the best-written character in the whole story and Alfie Allen was the best actor too. Like so many characters ended the series as different people than they began but none of their arcs were as coherent as Theon's. It's like Theon was a fully realized character and every motivation from the first episode to the last came from the same core person. Arya, Bran, Jamie...they all had such sharp turns that made them feel unrecognizable. Even more subtle changes like the one's in the Hound and Sam felt less fleshed out and too indulgent. Theon's was so nuanced and organic and relatable and it made him such a tragic hero of the story. Alfie should have won every Emmy for his performance. And I think his death was a good death--a true redemption--but part of me did want to see his and Sansa's story play out a little more. I'm glad they gave us a glimpse of that potential even if it never manifested.

    Arya killing the Night King was epic, but the show really missed the mark here when it comes to the prophecy of the “prince or princess that was promised”. It was supposed to be a Targaryen, so either Jon or Dany. That didn’t end up going anywhere left GOT fans frustrated.

    • @Nattiie
      @Nattiie 11 месяцев назад +9

      Even in HOTD if you’d watch it back, Viserys has the exact same dagger Arya used to kill the Night King. Then Viserys talks about the prophecy about a Targaryen (so what happened in GOT) & it really doesn’t make sense why Arya killed him, even though they tried to “foreshadow” a bit to make it makes sense with the Red woman. Neither does why HOTD still pushes this narrative. Hopefully HOTD somehow explains it.

Jon was my favorite character so to watch him just dissolve into this lesser version of himself was sad to see. Also, them saying he was always the hero is utter nonsense. Hardhome, he failed. Battle of the Bastards, he failed. The journey beyond the Wall to get a wight, the mission was successful, but he still failed by basically sacrificing himself where he honestly should have died. I only say that because, they claim he was always the hero when he wasn't. Battles like fight for the Wall, he couldn't have been the hero because it was a combined effort by the Night's Watch to hold the Wall. They were just pull things out of their ass at that point.
