    It may seem cowardly, but Ramsey is honestly a way more effective commander than Jon in this battle. Jon gives approximately 0 orders. He's not a commander in this fight; he's a warrior. This is a sad but excellent point. Jon is Ned Stark 2.0. He's honest and forthright to a fault. Unfortunately that is not enough to be an effective leader. In his one previous command, his men mutiny and kill him! A better leader would not have misread the situation so badly.

      @@gunkulator1 How is it not a winning combination when the Stark's basically won the game in the end on the show? What did Tywin's pragmatism and ruthlessness get him in the end? Even in the books you have so many northerners still loyal to the Starks cause of what Ned represented. And Ned lost cause he could not bear to see children suffer for the sins of their family. He was still struggling with PTSD because of Roberts rebellion and everything that happened with his sister and Elia Martell and her kids.

    • @UserJWR
      @UserJWR Год назад +57

      @@gunkulator1 There is a huge difference between a commander and a schemer. Ned misread the situation in the context of political schemes, which he wasn't used to from ruling his own court. However, commanding soldiers in a battle takes an entirely different skillset than political intrigue and I'm pretty sure the books portray Ned as a very capable commander. Similarly, I am quite certain that Littlefinger, who is an excellent schemer, would be fairly useless as a military commander.

In retrospect this is exactly what Sansa meant when she told Jon that he doesn't know him like she does and that he shouldn't do what he wants. The moment she told him they're not getting Rickon back, he should have planned it all from there but as a brother I understand where Jon's mindset was in that moment. Just imagine being seconds away from saving your sibling and having them die right in fron of you... Jon was blinded by grief. Ramsey played him like a fiddle. Which begs the question, how would Robb have acted in that moment ? There are better ways to beat someone when you keep a cool head, and as a leader, it's what you are forced into. Miguel Sapochnik, one of the HOTD showrunners did this epic episode along with the Hardhome episode from last season. Also, good call on Sansa's allies saving the day. Poor Wun Wun (the giant). When those Stark banners unfurl over Winterfell is one of the best moments of the show. They had to take some of the Ramsey death scenes out because it was too gruesome. What's funny about it is how wrong everyone who says he should have zig-zagged are.
      Zig-zagging would have kept him in range of the bow, and with how good an archer as Ramsey was, moving from side to side was NOT going to make him miss. Rickon didn't really have any good options. He could try to run straight ahead as fast as he could to get out of bow range, but that was about it. There weren't any trees in the area he could run into to make Ramsey's view more obscured, so straight ahead was his only option.

But humans aren't random, we always seek pattern. So, his zigzag run would practicality be pseudo random. If he zigzagged he would have been tired and unable to get out of range sooner and thus easier to target, and most importantly; Ramsay conditioned Rickon to go in a straight line by hitting on sides (missing on purpose), so in this case zigzagging puts him in more danger.. but lets say he did zigzag masterfully, Ramsay would have used the archers standing beside him.

    Regarding Jon & Sansa’s argument. Neither one of them were wrong, imo, it’s just that they were both speaking on the information they each had. Sansa’s pov was based on info she had that Jon didn’t, & Jon’s pov was based on what they had to work with.
    I don’t blame Jon for acting on the info he had & not waiting just bc Sansa said so, w/o any explanation or reasoning.

      Ramsay was just toying with Rickon and Jon. He had hundreds of archers at the ready and would have ordered all of them to shoot once Rickon started to getting close to being out of range. Zig zag would not have mattered. Notice how Jon's horse was immediately killed by the dozens of arrows fired after Rickon died.

      @@orothien was that their intention with Rickon? Maybe, but it didn’t seem that way… from what I gather a shaggy dog story is about making people care about something that was meaningless in the end anyway. But here I didn’t care about Rickon to begin with and he was meaningless in the end, nothing misleading about it, just seemed like they didn’t have the time or energy to give true life to his character, which is a little unusual given the style of the rest of the story where they make us deeply love a character just to kill them off anyway. That seems more in line with the shaggy dog story concept where as Rickon is an exception from it here. From other comments from book readers it seems Rickon had more character development in the books but I haven’t read them so can’t say for myself.

    A tidbit of this episode: "Battle of the Bastards" was written by series co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and directed by Miguel Sapochnik. The episode received immense critical acclaim, with several reviewers calling it a "masterpiece", and being praised as one of the series' best episodes as well as one of the greatest television episodes of all time. Critics described the battle in the North as "terrifying, gripping and exhilarating", Harington's performance received high praise, and Daenerys' reunion with her dragons at the beginning of the episode was deemed "thrilling". The eponymous battle took 25 days to film and required 500 extras, 600 crew members, and 70 horses. It notably won the Emmy award for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing; the episode was Kit Harington's choice to support his nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Sapochnik also won the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the episode. Miguel Sapochnik also had directed the fifth-season episodes "The Gift" and "Hardhome" which were also some of the best episodes in the series. Game of Thrones had a lot of episodes that had outstanding writing, vision and direction that were better than a lot of movies past or present on television.
