Nah, I agree for the most part, but I think that “broody” vibe for Henry Cavill is SOLELY how he was directed by Zack Snyder. Henry very outspokenly wanted a more hopeful, friendly, classic Superman but respected Zack’s vision enough to go with it. I believe he’s like Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, where it would have been the best casting the character has ever seen, if it weren’t for outside factors like an out of touch director or studio.

That's something James Gunn is really good at. He can seemingly adapt one or a group of C-D list Superheroes and Villains that only hardcore comic book fans know about and make them a mainstream success
Yeah but that is taking things slightly to unfair with James Gunn as he seems to be only focusing on unpopular characters when in reality the league needs to be focused on
THIS. Holy shit dc has zero faith in their characters I swear. So many great characters that should get some spotlight but we always get the same 3 characters. They're cool but things gets stale after a while.
I’ve always had this mindset, Marvel follows Humans becoming “Gods” and DC follows “Gods” becoming Human. Granted there are some obvious exceptions to both statements, but I can’t feel it’s not a wrong oversimplification
Well here's what I think. Every fictional character that we get essentially has the brain of a human being. That's why they share the same human psychology. I mean that's why we can relate to all kinds of characters at the end of the day coz we connect to the core emotional part. So even if someone technically is a god, in terms of powers, etc. They still kinda share the same human emotions. Coz if they would actually behave like ab extra terrestrial, then we would not really be able to relate to that character. Like I believe fr any fictional movie to work, u need some character who represents us, the human audience in this new world. Nd we relate to their reactions to everything that is going on around them.
I was thinking that maybe Gunn should draw inspirations from Grant Morrison's JLA run where the Justice League are pretty much inspired by Greek mythology. Superman is Zeus, Batman is Hades, Wonder Woman is Athena, Aquaman is Poseidon, etc. And maybe the Hall of Justice can act as their Mount Olympus.
Honestly one of the main reason the DCEU tanked was a lack of direction Studio Interference by Warner Executives who thought they knew better and getting involved with the creative process which just ruined the whole thing and soured fans on the product as a whole. So thats something that needs to be avoided again
That’s true, but they also did bad by hiring Snyder to be the architect of the entire universe. He was never the right guy, even without the studio interference. But again, that goes back to WB for hiring him in the first place.
Studio interference isn't the issue, hiring Snyder in the biggest and first mistake. They only interfere because Snyder keep messing up and can't produce a good movie with their most expensive IP
@@luciusnguyen2449 I'm not a fan of Snyders presentation at all but he at the very least had a vision while Warner wanted MCU levels of success with no plan or build up

I’m so glad to finally hear someone else noticed Zach Snyder practically quoting Manchester Black when he said that about a “dream world”. Whenever I think maybe Snyder didn’t completely misunderstand Superman, I remember that he unironically has the viewpoint of a Superman villain.
@King-gk2ce No, it's human. Humane regards benevolence or compassion. The comment is clearly referencing the traits of being human, in which the adjective form of "Human" is correct.

1. Never let anyone with little to no knowledge of the dc characters have creative control over them, least of all, never let them establish a wider universe, that's why james gunn was brought in. 2. Make the continuity more consistent. 3. Make the characters like their comic counterparts and their personality. 4. Hire good directors and writers that knows how to tell a story and how the character should be portrayed.
In the case of 3.,maybe not all the time. For example the Superman suit in the DCEU is awesome because it's not like the comics one(it's more alien looking than Clark's old pajamas. As personality goes,A Killer Croc that tries to prove he's a civilized good guy instead of a brutish monster would be crazy good.
I'm surprise that you want comic counterpart from DC including personality.. did you know that there was alot character that isn't comic counterpart... some most notably is Thor is like nothing like his comic counterpart or guardians of the galaxy, Hulk, Ultron, Gorr, Malekith etc.
We all secretly wish that the new DCU would be just more like the older dc animated shows like justice league and justice league unlimited and batman the animated series
Just with some of the new stories like Sinestro Corp War also give all the characters good screen time, for example Kyle was almost none existent in Justice League and JLU
I think one of the most important things the DCU needs to remember is DC is all about humanity, our “capacity for good” and what these heroes will do to help us reach that. And the heroes themselves need to feel human, it felt like the Snyderverse tried too hard to make the heroes feel godlike even though DC is supposed to be gods trying to be human while Marvel is humans being more than what they were, just look at Superman, he’s a godlike alien but his upbringing made him more human than really probably most people out there, he’s not just meant to be a big gun to take on the big baddies of the week, he’ll stand up for and help anyone whether it’s stopping someone from killing themselves, helping a kid’s cat out of a tree and giving the kid some wise words, or helping someone with their abusive parent. Whether it’s Superman or someone else, the small actions matter, Wonder Woman getting ice cream with a kid, Wally West running all over the world just to find a toy kids at an adoption center would like for Christmas. Even with the heroes without powers, without godlike abilities, some of my favorite Batman moments are the lighter ones, not just him performing cool takedowns, but staying with a dying Ace (I think that’s her name), smiling when a kid didn’t see him as that scary, and of course the reason why he takes the Robin’s under his wing being so they don’t turn out like him which worked with Nightwing even if not so much with Red Hood. Obviously superheroes are gonna do big things, that just comes with the whole thing, but when it comes to who DC heroes are and what they do, sometimes they need to feel more like Spider-Man, less like Thor (even then I feel like the MCU got that with Thor at least sometimes better than DC has lately when Thor has done stuff like taking selfies with fans)
Yea that’s true, he did say that he was planning on doing that. I don’t necessarily think it’s a good idea though because, like karimdavis said, movie tie-in video games have a history of being bad. And also it could make the DCU too convoluted and complicated. I’d rather they keep it strictly to movies and shows (maybe tie-in comics too), and leave the video games alone. Star Wars can get away with it but this isn’t Star Wars.
In defense of Henry Cavill, he is a big fan of Superman and has wanted to play him for years. The reason why he acted so melancholy was because that's how this version was written. I think if Henry was given a better script with a more light hearted and hopeful Superman, he would have done the part perfectly.
I'm gonna be honest, when the better version of the Justice league movie came out I kind of got on the restore the snyderverse hype train. I honestly was just wanting good dc stuff with a consistent flow and a plan of where to go. After I found out what Zack would have done with it in the end I was officially over it. That and James Gunns ideas just seemed so much better to me.
I was only interested in the whole restore the Snyderverse after the Snyder Cut because WB literally had no plans for the future but after James Gunn was hired to reboot DC, rebooting was the better option.
I 2nd what both of you guys said. But there are still people on the RTSV train even though it’s crystal clear that it’s over that it’s not gonna happen, and it’s pretty annoying lol.
@@akilbrazier1421 they’re still going on about that? Sheesh, I guess if that’s what they want to wait on then do it. Ima stick with this promising new continuity
I never really liked the znyders justice league and I never understood why it was considered so great. Superman should be a symbol of hope and a force of good and positivity.
I think his issue is the same with JJ Abrams, he can write good scenes, not good movies. The scenes may look and feel cool, but don't hold together as a cohesive whole for a movie.
As James Gunn leads in reshaping the DC Universe (DCU), there's a compelling need for strategic overhaul, drawing lessons from the strengths and missteps of past adaptations like the DCEU and Arrowverse. This initiative aims to redefine how DC characters are perceived on the big screen, ensuring a deeper and more resonant connection with both new and long-standing fans. A critical focus of this strategy is the faithful alignment with the original ethos and characteristics of DC characters that have captivated fans for decades. For example, The Question should maintain his deep philosophical inquiries and distinctive faceless appearance while adapting his storylines for contemporary cinema. This approach ensures that all characters remain true to their roots while appealing to a modern audience. The importance of employing directors and writers who are not only talented but also genuinely passionate and knowledgeable about the characters they bring to life cannot be overstated. It's crucial to capture the spirit and emotional resonance that elevate these characters beyond their comic book origins. Each character should maintain a distinct tone and style, akin to their portrayal in the comics, ensuring their narratives are both authentic and engaging. The success of the Arrowverse in creating long-running TV shows that stay true to the core essence of DC characters with hopeful and colorful narratives provides a valuable blueprint. This contrasts with some DCEU projects which have sometimes ventured into overly dark and deconstructive territories, alienating broader audiences. The DCU can avoid these pitfalls by embracing a variety of tones and themes that are suitable for each character, steering clear of a one-size-fits-all approach to storytelling. Looking forward, the blueprint for the DCU's future should be clear and detailed, establishing a vision and plan that allows creative talents to freely express their ideas within the constraints of the franchise. High production values, respect for character history, and consistency in continuity are essential to ensure the films are not only true to the comic books but also stand as outstanding works of cinema. In essence, by amalgamating the best practices from various DC adaptations and ensuring a deep understanding of what makes these characters special, James Gunn's DCU is poised to unite classic appeal with innovative storytelling. This strategy honors the legacy of DC characters while adapting them in ways that feel fresh, relevant, and exciting for today's audiences, thereby enriching the cinematic landscape.
I grew up thinking DC was darker than Marvel which is crazy looking back. I was so confused when my friend in high school told me that it's more the opposite in the comics. But even looking at the adaptations now, yeah. That makes sense. It's closer to the real world, of course it's darker.
Dude I'm glad someone else also agrees with me on this. I absolutely love Henry Cavill, but out of all the live action iterations, he kinda ranks at the bottom just bcoz of the vibes. Like Snyder probably didn't understand the essence of Superman.

I'm just glad that we're finally entering a time where people can freely acknowledge what a failure Snyder is and how he singlehandledly ruined the DCEU from the start. For the past few years, most people have stayed quite about this because they don't like to deal with the Snyder cultists
As terrible as Snyder was, the failure of the DCEU was not all on him. I blame DCEU for not having an overarching plan and being so reactionary when something failed.
@@carlosjavier771 I’m talking about actually posting videos like this. 5 years ago, you can only count on 1 hand the number of videos criticizing Snyder.
@@luciusnguyen2449 Not really lol, there's been so many people criticizing him since his release of BvS. Critics and youtubers alike. If there was no criticisms, then his version of the DCEU would have been successful, but it isn't.
I agreed with the video until the "I think Barry Allen should go away or stay dead". It's Crazy cause so many people grew up and come to know The Flash because of Barry Allen. Everything people constantly brings up about The Flash and his usage of power, his intelligence, and usage of Time Travel, some of his relationship and mentorship, kindness + "boy scout" attitude, etc. is because of the Character Barry Allen. It's interesting to me that a talking point for Wally West is that "so many people grew up with him", but it's thrown out the window for a character who isn't Wally. So many would say "Barry Allen copied everything from Wally West" when the opposite is true. Or "I believe everything told about Barry Allen is done" just to fridge the Character, when the same could be said to even Spider-Man or IronMan. I don't mind if Wally West shows up in the movies, that's very cool! I actually WANT to see it, but why is it that we can have: - 3 CONFIRMED Green Lanterns (Hal, Guy, and John) - Batman, Nightwing, and Robin (Damian) - a Bunch of characters people don't even know, or paid attention to - etc. But why can't we have a movie called "The Flash" and it stars Barry Allen and Wally West as both The Flash? We can have Nightwing without the "Abusive" side of Batman. We can have multiple Green Lanterns without the "2 Green Lantern per sector" rule, we can have Damian without Tim Drake, we can have a Young Superman with an Experienced Batman, we can have a world already inhabited by Superheroes, but we can't have Barry Allen AND Wally West in a Movie? Call me crazy, but would it not be cool if we got both because other titles are getting both or more too?!
You are forgetting the fact that speedsters are the most OP characters ever, hard to write and balance with other super heroes. Comics tend to deal with that with varying degrees of succes but Imagine haven to deal with that from the get go in a brand new universe.
@@danyaelgonzalez9396 Speedsters are considered OP because most of the time, they're written with maxxed out abilities. It's like starting a game on Beginner's Difficulty with a Maxxed out Account. Of course you seem OP, Your account is maxxed out and you're on Beginner's mode!! The worst part of this is how the same treatment isn't done to many characters, including Flash's own Villains. Example: - Gorilla Grodd has Telekinesis and Telepathy, had he been written better, he'd realise he can sense the Flash's Thoughts, and create shields with cars, the ground, or launch them at The Flash at high velocity. Matter of Fact, he could just lift The Flash off the Ground, and yeet him to the sun. But guess what? He's often written as a Talking Gorilla who could lift 1 item with his mind per battle. If The Flash was written more reasonably, he'd be a more enjoyable character in adaptations, cause now he has to think of what's his next move. MAWS isn't even written as a Cracked out Superman, and still does Superman well. And we know Superman in Comics is powerful enough to sneeze a Galaxy apart.
14:37 this is why I’m so excited for Woman of Tomorrow! That comic is one of my favorite comics of all time! And she’s sooooo different from Supes! A lot more like Cavil’s performance of Superman tbh
Cavill would've been a GREAT Superman. We've never seen him play the character so we can't use that to judge him. Snyderman is brooding and edgy because Henry is an actor. He plays the character he's paid to, not the one he wants to.
I think one of the most needed changes is consistent musical themes and motifs for characters. It allowed moments in Endgame and Guardians to hit so hard and the DCEU never really had that
4:23 I think aquaman was pretty fun in his movies, it feels like he is always unserious but when the situation is really bad he goes to his full rage mode
15:53 A good way of having Wally as the main Flash while introducing both Barry and Thawne would be telling a story that borrows elements from or straight up adapts “The Return of Barry Allen” into a movie.
It isn’t that his Batman kills that is the problem. Burton’s Batman killed. Nolan’s Batman killed. The problem is Snyder does an Batman movie where Dark Knight Returns is the blueprint and bastardized the message of the comic!! The exact words of the comic are “Guns are the weapons of Cowards!” The comic book has Batman breaking a rifle in it. He says “Those who use guns are the enemy.” That is the problem with Snyder’s Batman. Also he did Doomsday fight too soon. That storyline should not be done in the second Superman film in the Henry Cavill canon. Then his resurrection in Justice League has no emotion to it. Even though I did like Snyder’s Justice League, I still hate that there is no emotion to Superman’s resurrection.
Thank you for making this video. Honestly, if only these movie studios could pay attention to guys like you truly care about the franchises and source material then we would be living in the golden age of comic book movies.
What makes me more excited by James Gunn's DCU is that isn't going to be like the DCEU/Snyderverse or the MCU that decostruct the origin story or put the characters in the real world. Gunn seem to willing to do a literal comic world in live action with different movies, tv shows, animated shows/movies and games having all different style and tone just like a comic run haeded by a writer(s).
One thing you tiptoed around was the fact the DCEU jumped ahead of itself WAY TOO EARLY. It pulled out all of the “big guns” too soon. When is at that, I mean heavy hitters like _ARES_ for Wonder Woman (then we got Cheetah next! WTF?!) Oh, and this version of Ares straight up annihilated his pantheon of fellow gods. Ares should have been the ultimate threat way on down the line several movies in and a legitimate danger to Wonder Woman, or better yet - her, and a formidable group of allies. He should NOT however, been hyped up as this threat that is impossible to overcome, then be easily defeated in the introduction movie’s third act! ZOD was the first rogue for Superman. On the surface, not a terrible choice, but there were many that were WAY better. Maybe have Supe go against some underused rogue and rethink him/her from the ground up. Maybe make them cunning, broken and desperate. The villain does not even have to be someone who is much a of a danger to the man of steel himself, but to his loved ones. Regardless, the DCEU IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED UP with frigging Doomsday! *_DOOMSDAY!_* …as in, the only being that successfully unalived Superman! How can you escalate conflict? How does the threat level rise proportionately in the Extended Universe? …or realistically?!
I think that needs more media is the Lanterns. Whether it be Green Lantern (Hal, Jon, Guy, Kyle), the Corps, the other colors, or some of the story lines (to many to list), there is so much room for TV, Movies, Mini-series, etc. Blackest Night was one of my favorite events in comics. You talk about something. to build towards, that includes practically every hero and villain group in DC.
i still want barry as primary flash ,but mainly because i want to see the titans with wally and nightwing ,as best friends, and later on after a crisis event seeing him step up as the main flash
I just hope it goes far anough and stays good so we can see characters we have never seen in live action like cyborg superman, a set consistant reverse flash and deathstroke, even blackest night
15:24 Don’t get me wrong I love Wally as much as the next guy, but having Wally be the main Flash without Barry Allen is like having Dick Grayson be the main Batman without Bruce Wayne. One of the reasons why I personally feel like Wally was a great Flash was that he was trying to live up to Barry, but he only had to be a hero in his own right (hence the Return of Barry Allen arc). For the new DCU, have Barry for a trilogy and introduce Wally in the second movie, have Barry die in an ‘endgame’ type movie, and then have Wally be the main Flash! Also on a side note with Ezra’s Barry Allen: don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate what they did with the character as an ‘ELSEWORLDS’ Flash. Trust me, there are way worst Barry Allens (notable Flash: United they Fall by Gail Simone, and DC Superhero Girls). Now that we have unique portrayals, let’s have a 1:1 accurate Barry Allen where he is nerdy yet charming, extremely intelligent, and hopeful.
I hope down the line we eventually get movies of the magic users of the DC universe like Dr.Fate, Constantine, Zatanna, swamp thing.etc. These characters are never used but if adopted properly they will rise in popularity in all DC media like MCU did with their more unknown characters. Hell, even throw the Question in there too.
Sorry, but I completely disagree with Barry Allen and Wally West. Barry deserves to get a trilogy or two seasons of the series before being killed, because for all the time he never got a normal film adaptation (while Wally has everything ahead of him).
John Papsidera definitely seems to be the Sarah Finn of the DCU. Gunn worked with him on The Suicide Squad and now Superman. Won't be surprised if he also works on future DCU projects
not sure if everyone will agree with me but a point that was missed in this video is the fact that the guys in charge of the live action movies always took away from the characters instead of trying to give them something completely original of their own, a good case can be made for Donner's Superman or Burton's Batman because honestly I don't want comics fidelity to the point of the films or shows be a literal case of copy and paste like the animated Killing Joke, well the actual Killing Joke parts of said adaptation.
I agree with everything here. However, my own opinion is that Red Hood should not in any way want to kill Batman, or be written out of his original motivation when he comes back in an "Under The Red Hood" story (i.e. Titans making Batman kill Joker & Arkham Knight and Titans both making him a Scarecrow henchman)
Everything you said in this video, I couldn't agree with you more. Other than the Flash's suits in the later seasons, I liked the the one from season two the best. But you were able to say everything I wished I could say and with much clearer language than I would use ( Navy vet and a roughneck's kid). You always do great work and you are always respectful that says a lot about the type of person you are. Keep up the great work and thank you for the amazing work you do.
@@thecdog09 Honestly, I and majority of people do not really care about the writting of the show, sure, we may have found it confusing or annoying at times, but most of the times we enjoyed it, we loved and grew up with it. Personally, I binged watch The Flash up until Season 5 in just a week 5 years ago, and then when Season 6 came out, it started the downfall and I started to skip some episodes or get uninterested, but even with the terrible Season 7 and 8, I still watched every episode carefully and with excitement mainly because of Grant Gustin's hard work, Cisco Ramon's W presence and the action scenes, whether pooly executed or not. For me, the CGI did not affect my point of view of the show, I honestly like it way better than early seasons.
I think they need to give equal focus to every character until the fans decide who is your star, this way we don't have 15 Batman movies, 5 Superman movies and nothing with Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Zatanna, ect
I remember how mad everyone was when grant wasn't given the flash role in the dceu he would have absolutely carried the franchise with his performances, like he did his own tv series for like 9 whole seasons
In regards to Shazam, I hate to say this, don’t include these characters in James Gunn’s universe. The actors playing Billy and Shazam wear great but I think would be hard to find actors that could replace them. Which sucks because I do like the characters and I did like the actors. Honestly Dwayne Johnson is the only actor I didn’t like. I wonder who will be playing Dr Fate and Hawk Man. I will wait to see.
Would love to see Oded Fehr as Doctor Fate, he voiced him in Justice League Cartoon, and his very distinctive voice really worked for the character. And would be a great call back for us DCAU fans.
It sucks that Dr fate was used and then immediately reset. The actor was perfect, the suit while being different and a bit weird was actually surprisingly good and just the way he moved and his powers worked was great
Yea he actually felt like Superman the most in that movie compared to the other ones. That was easily the best aspect of that awful movie. If only that damn cgi upper lip wasn’t so bad 😩😂

People say that Batman wouldn't work in real world if he follows the "no kill rule" but actually is the opposite The villains just get out of prison often because it's how comics works, they always return so we can have stories and you don't need to create a new villain every time, but in the real world all the villains would be locked in prison forever the first time they try to do some shit, probably only Falcone or Penguin would get out and return 2 or 3 times because they have contacts in Gotham but eventually even they would be in prison, the justice system may have it's issues but rogues as Killer Croc, Joker, Two-Face, Hugo Strange, Mr Freeze and a lot of others would never escape prison
Yep if anything, movie world lets the no kill rule work at its' best. The villains are often perma removed in movies after they are defeated. And Batman could potentially be closer in strength because movie versions of superheroes are often nerfed compared to their comic counterpart
I can see Blackmask also getting out through his connections but that only incentivizes Batman to be more thorough with his breakdown of the criminal underworld that when Blackmask gets thrown back into prison, he'll be jailmates with the people he was trusting to get him out again
Another thing and I can't say this enough... DON'T FUCK THE TIMELINE The TOMORROWVERSE started of great with Superman: Man of Tomorrow and Batman: The Long Halloween. Then they just fast tracked and jumped over a lot of key moments
I would love that instead of teasing up Heroes & Villains, the movies tease recurring normal characters, Like for example, In Superman Legacy Teasing Lana Lang or in Brave & The Bold teasing Julia Penniworth
I definitely fully agree with all the things you mentioned. One of my expectations for the DCU is to avoid the mistakes that the DCEU has done and most of all they should not hire someone who did not truly read the comics. Zack Snyder and Dwayne Johnson are the perfect examples of who didn't understand the DC characters very well. As much I like Man of Steel and ZSJL, in my opinion that;s one of the reasons why the Snyderverse should not be restored cuz he'll just continue to make mistakes by treating the characters way different from the comics. It's good to have someone like James Gunn to be in charge of DC because he is truly a comic book fan and an experienced director who can make great movies.
one thing that I believe is a mistake about the dcu, is that for the second time we will see an older Batman with a young Superman at the beginning of his career, as I wish the dcu's Batman was still in his 1st robin, but he There will already be Damian Wayne, which means he has been Batman for at least 15 years
@cjuw yeah, but that's because they crammed all of Batman's stories into like 7-8 years in the timeline. He's not even a father figure to Dick in the New 52 in terms of age, more like an older brother.
Great video. I’m “not sure” we can blame any of the actors with these poorly written movies. Superman was a loner without hope Wonder Woman was NOT a warrior at all. Shazam was two completely different characters The Flash was a little too silly even when he decides to let his mother die. Black Adam hired an actor with a ton of charisma and made him sullen and quiet.
One really personal and random thing I wish is that they just respect the linneage of heroes. DC has A LOT of people who dawn the same mantle, and I think it would be best for all fans if everybody gets to appear, even if they aren't as important
What i want to see from James Gunns DC universe is more B- list heroes getting shot. Less Batman and more Wonderwoman and Flash. I'd really like to see more obscure heroes adapted onto screen like Looker, Catman, metamorpho and the Question.
It's simple just do the exact opposite of Zack Snyder and follow the DCAU instead. We don't need Space Jesus or Wannabe Punisher. We need Batman and Superman. Bring back Superman's optimism and bring back Batman's compassion. Those are Batman and Superman's defining traits.

Just watch any of Henry Cavill's interviews and tell me that he doesn't have cute, charming and humble vibes that Superman should have. He just had a bad script and a director who misunderstood the character. If he was given a proper script, Henry Cavill could have pulled off a great acting career as SUPERMAN.
One more lesson from modern mcu I think they can learn is don't have giant gaps between character appearances. In 2021 alone we had white vision, Shang chi, the eternals and a few more that 3 years later haven't been heard from or close to appearing again soon. Characters should pop up at least every 2-3 year. And same should be said for gaps between sequals, except for teem up films like justice league which can wait however long. But there shouldn't be a 4+ year gap between Superman and Superman 2
But the thing is, that’s what happens when you have so many characters in your universe and you give so many of them movies and trilogies. There’s too many of them to keep track of and it has to make sense for them to appear in whatever they’re appearing in. It’s part of the reason why I think the MCU should’ve ended after Endgame or after Spiderman and Guardians of the Galaxy wrapped up their trilogies. The universe got too big. And it’s fine for a lot of characters to be introduced and to get movies. But a lot of them don’t need trilogies. That’s where you get problems of movies in a trilogy being 4+ years apart. Or you’d have to put out like 4 or 5 movies a year.
Thank you, I never understood and still don't how some people defend Zacks movies... He has no clue about the material he uses and just makes shit up as he goes
He actually knows, it's a news52 in all the forms "dark for being dark, an initial plan going nowhere and characters who doesn't act like the original characters"
One of my buggest issues with the DCEU is that they wanted to cast a comic accurate, older, burlier, more gritty version of Batman. But then when it came to Joker they chose something completely different when they could’ve gone with an older more comic accurate Joker that could’ve easily been mastered by Willem Dafoe.
Zack Snyder was never fit to lead the DC movie universe. I like the guy, but his philosephies are totally wrong. James Gunn understands characters and the heart behind them. He made me tear up over Rockets Friends dying, or Ratcatcher summoning her army of rats. Snyder couldnt even make me emotional over Supermans death. DC has incredible characters and Im glad we now have someone who chooses substance over style.

Here are my opinions on the DCEU some might be controversial 1. The DCEU was doomed from the start with the involvement of Nolan and Goyer. WB took all the wrong lessons from the Dark Knight trilogy and thinking a gritty and realistic reinvention of all its DC characters was the path forward. 2. Zack Snyder was creatively and fundamentally the wrong choice to spearhead the DC universe. His lack of understanding of the source material should've been clear from his Watchmen adaptation. Sucker Punch honestly should've been the end of his career. 3. Henry Cavill was never a good Superman. Online discourse has gaslighted people into believing his take on the character was perfect and that he was this generation's Superman comparable to Christopher Reeves. MoS he had no charisma and his character was flat. BvS continued the same trend and so did ZSJL. The closest representation of a comic accurate Superman is ironically Josstice League. Not only that but Cavill is not a leading man or a box office pull that his fans claim he is. 4. Trying to be different from Marvel in tone fucked them from telling DC's best stories. 5. Being different for the sake of being different is never a good idea. Sure they had a "vision" but that vision was not a good one. 6. WB meddling does play a huge part into why this universe failed but at the same time if they didn't there would be no 1 billion dollar Aquaman or Wonder Woman or Shazam. I think it was for the best that they did. 7. The Fans of the DCEU ruined its image to the public and online fans. 8. The five story arc Zack had planned was utter dogshit. Also Snyder cannot write a good story to save his life. 9. Actors like Ezra Miller and Amber Heard embroiled in controversy tainted the DCEU.
Lesson from Arrowverse, don't forget the most important part, bring Matt Ryan back as Constantine and use Spoken Spell as the magic ritual in DCU. This Spoken Spell makes DC magic different and unique, compared to other superhero series with magic in it. . I like DC Magic.
Looking back, while I enjoyed certain projects from the DCEU, I think that universe felt more like an Elseworlds than main continuity DC (or live action Earth-0 so to speak). Almost like how Frank Miller's TDKR was interesting but worked better as its own universe and not the main one. I liked the Snyder movies but certain stuff from his films and the other films in that world definitely don't work as main DC continuity (Dick Grayson being dead and never having become Nightwing, "Insane" Lex, Flash not being able to physically move people at super-speed (that detail really irked me), The Rock's entire Black Adam portrayal, etc).
I will say, with Marvel too, gonna be hard, at least with DC, cause they like as Gunn said to do 6 issue arcs or miniseries for movies. So with that in mind, not a whole lot you can do with that, and even then some heroes don't really have much big stories you can do, like Barry Flash, Trial of The Flash and that's it yeah. There's newer stuff, but not as big, Death of Iris is big too, but don't know how you can make them into movies but if they combine enough stuff, pull from Wally's stories, I guess they can do it but well yeah.
Valid points man, I'm glad you mentioned the costumes coz I honestly thought even Gunn missed the opportunity to make the Superman suit style n fabric be like Spidermans in Homecoming (nothing too much)
Finally someone else that recognizes that Henry probably wasn’t the right fit for Superman. He’s a very likable guy, that is why he has his fans but I never saw his interpretation of Superman as good
It annoys me to no end how people keep blaming Snyder for the failure of the DCEU. I can understand if you don’t like his vision but he at least had a vision. WB did Zack Snyder and David Ayer dirty by constraining him and altering his vision. David Goyer even explained how WB was trying to just catch up to Marvel and put Snyder in a no win scenario.
One lesson that I heavily hope that WB learns is that they should take the formula from The Batman where we see all of our heroes in their early phase not as origins but more like them trying to balance their lives so it's half a world building story half a full universe like Superman starting at Smallville then going for Metropolis and the post creds introduces Batman, Batman's mid days as a hero needs to be fantastical like he's already dealt realistic villains such as Joker or Penguin and now has to overcome the biggest challenge of his life: the fantastical villains like Poison Ivy or Killer Croc
I still think having origin stories is a VERY important part of building a universe. The MCU has given us an origin story for every hero except Spiderman, and even Spiderman has had his origin story alluded too. And I honestly don’t think Batman’s origin story has been over done, sure we all know it, but I’m not so sure we’ve all seen it.
I would also like to see Barry Allen be the main flash for the first saga of the DCU. Mainly because I want to see Wally West be kid flash for a Teen Titans movie. Sure we could see Bart Allen, or Wallas West, but I really want to see good old ginger Wally West in the Teen Titans roster. Maybe in whatever the big overarching story the first saga has to tell Barry dies in the final battle leaving Wally to take over as the main flash.
The problem with Ezra is that his character was more like Waller or Bart than it was Barry. Barry's... not a loser. He's very down to earth, he has a charm to him. He knows how to talk to people and is often a mediator in the Justice League. Wally and Bart are far more antisocial(although Wally is a bit of a flirt) and would have fit the awkward aspect much better. That's why Grant played Barry so well. He had no issues making friends or getting dates. He just loved one woman and struggled with processing his traumas.
One thing they gotta make sure they do is tell one big story and build toward something big the correct way. After Snyder bounced (or got bounced, either way) the DCEU became directionless to the point where they were throwing shit at the wall and seeing what would stick. They weren’t building toward anything, and we never even got another Justice League movie after 2017 (no I don’t count ZSJL, because that’s what the 2017 movie was *supposed* to be). Everything felt random and like they were making movies just to make them, and they happened to exist in the same universe. The DCU has to learn from that. Give us a grand story with quality movies like the first 3 phases of the MCU did. But then they gotta also know where to end it. We don’t want it to get over saturated and lose its way like what happened with the MCU. I have hope that Gunn will do a better job than Snyder, Johns, and Hamada. But I’m moreso cautiously optimistic as of right now.
Nobody cares about that crap. Snyder's Superman was just fine. The WB shills boycotted and sabotaged BvS and especially Justice League, that's why most movies after Snyder's departure lost a ton of money and WBD is now for sale. i hated him in the movie, but wow. The show.
Superframe also shares the same mindset.
That phrase is a meme that does not line up.

This guy gets the idea of what dc superheroes and stories should be about
I heard that Gunn also opened to the idea to have time in video games with characters in his universe
We all know how bad tie in video games are. Doing that might not work
Yea that’s true, he did say that he was planning on doing that.
Sounds hella risky but I want a good Superman game before I die so let's give it a shot.

Nah I’ve read DC comics for a while and it’s 100% more darker than marvel on average.
Barry has to be in the DCU. We NEED REVERSE FLASH ASAP.
They could do something like “The Return of Barry Allen”.

I actually WANT to see it, but why is it that we can have:
- 3 CONFIRMED Green Lanterns (Hal, Guy, and John)
- Batman, Nightwing, and Robin (Damian)
- a Bunch of characters people don't even know, or paid attention to
- etc.

The worst part of this is how the same treatment isn't done to many characters, including Flash's own Villains. Example:
- Gorilla Grodd has Telekinesis and Telepathy, had he been written better, he'd realise he can sense the Flash's Thoughts, and create shields with cars, the ground, or launch them at The Flash at high velocity.

I just hope it goes far anough and stays good so we can see characters we have never seen in live action like cyborg superman, a set consistant reverse flash and deathstroke, even blackest night
zach loves slow mo so much, he put in every fight scene.
Neither has wally!
John Papsidera definitely seems to be the Sarah Finn of the DCU. Gunn worked with him on The Suicide Squad and now Superman. Won't be surprised if he also works on future DCU projects
Whoever hired gunn as the runner of the DCU is a genius and made everyones life better!! GUNN IS A COMIC BOOK FAN GOAT
I think Barry should be the main Flash, but only for a couple years. Give him a solo movie or two and then have Kid Flash take over.
Agreed
I agree. I think this would be the best approach.
I think that's the best approach, the Barry fans get to enjoy him and we don't completely erase him while Wally still shines just a little later on
I personally think Barry would be better as a one-movie mentor figure to Wally, like Anthony Hopkins' character in The Mask of Zorro...
not sure if everyone will agree with me but a point that was missed in this video is the fact that the guys in charge of the live action movies always took away from the characters instead of trying to give them something completely original of their own, a good case can be made for Donner's Superman or Burton's Batman because honestly I don't want comics fidelity to the point of the films or shows be a literal case of copy and paste like the animated Killing Joke, well the actual Killing Joke parts of said adaptation.
It used to be exciting back in the day to think about crossovers but I actually miss when everything was just its own standalone thing.
7:45 who’s the one exception?
I think it's guy gardner
Everything you said in this video, I couldn't agree with you more. Other than the Flash's suits in the later seasons, I liked the the one from season two the best. But you were able to say everything I wished I could say and with much clearer language than I would use ( Navy vet and a roughneck's kid). You always do great work and you are always respectful that says a lot about the type of person you are. Keep up the great work and thank you for the amazing work you do.
2:32 thank you! It makes no sense that Snyder’s version of Superman is so disconnected from humanity when he’s fucking raised as a human
I still think Grant Gustins flash would've fit perfectly in the DCU
Nah. Unpopular opinion: The Flash was a trash show with or without bad CGI
@@thecdog09 Agreed, but that has nothing to do with OP's original comment. He is simply praising the actor.
I remember how mad everyone was when grant wasn't given the flash role in the dceu
he would have absolutely carried the franchise with his performances, like he did his own tv series for like 9 whole seasons
The actor was perfect, the suit while being different and a bit weird was actually surprisingly good and just the way he moved and his powers worked was great
Shazam is too big of a character to leave out of an entire cinematic universe imo
@@tomwestwood yeah but they cast him and his family perfectly. The first movie was lightning in a bottle. They can’t recreate that
@@biguy617 You can say the same thing about Matt Reeves Batman and they are going to be released with the DCU Batman at the same time.
I don't agree with you. Every scene in JL 2017 with Cavill that was Weadon-made was great and Cavil played him really well
Agree. For all that movies faults, it really got superman.
Yea he actually felt like Superman the most in that movie compared to the other ones. That was easily the best aspect of that awful movie. If only that damn cgi upper lip wasn’t so bad 😩😂

People say that Batman wouldn't work in real world if he follows the "no kill rule" but actually is the opposite
The villains just get out of prison often because it's how comics works, they always return so we can have stories and you don't need to create a new villain every time, but in the real world all the villains would be locked in prison forever the first time they try to do some shit, probably only Falcone or Penguin would get out and return 2 or 3 times because they have contacts in Gotham but eventually even they would be in prison, the justice system may have it's issues but rogues as Killer Croc, Joker, Two-Face, Hugo Strange, Mr Freeze and a lot of others would never escape prison
DON'T FUCK THE TIMELINE
The TOMORROWVERSE started of great with Superman: Man of Tomorrow and Batman: The Long Halloween. Then they just fast tracked and jumped over a lot of key moments
Young justice pulled this crap too. I frigin hate timeskips and especially when the writing is worse after the time skip
It end up working better as a universe than the news52 universe (mostly)
@@jakehiebert8664 not better than the timmverse but better than the news52 one
Make great movies with great worldbuilding and great characters. Thats it
one thing that I believe is a mistake about the dcu, is that for the second time we will see an older Batman with a young Superman at the beginning of his career, as I wish the dcu's Batman was still in his 1st robin, but he There will already be Damian Wayne, which means he has been Batman for at least 15 years
He got up to Damien in 10 years in the new 52
@cjuw yeah, but that's because they crammed all of Batman's stories into like 7-8 years in the timeline. He's not even a father figure to Dick in the New 52 in terms of age, more like an older brother.
Executives should not step into the creative process of the filmmaker. Let the filmmaker and storyteller tell there stories.
Great video.
I’m “not sure” we can blame any of the actors with these poorly written movies.
Superman was a loner without hope
Wonder Woman was NOT a warrior at all.
Shazam was two completely different characters
The Flash was a little too silly even when he decides to let his mother die.
Black Adam hired an actor with a ton of charisma and made him sullen and quiet.
One really personal and random thing I wish is that they just respect the linneage of heroes. DC has A LOT of people who dawn the same mantle, and I think it would be best for all fans if everybody gets to appear, even if they aren't as important
ezra miller's flash looks less like he's running and more like he's trying to swim through air or he's throwing imaginary shurikens from his belt
Don't be stvpid and ¡gnorant. The WB shills boycotted and sabotaged BvS and especially Justice League, that's why most movies after Snyder's departure lost a ton of money and WBD is now for sale. Andrea Romano handled the casting of the DCAU. Maybe she should do the same for the DCU.
Think she's retired, also a voice caster, so she looks for different things than a standard casting agent.
Fantastic video mate 👌
16:37 all of those suits look great I only wish 2 of the 4 shows were too
Thank you, I never understood and still don't how some people defend Zacks movies... He has no clue about the material he uses and just makes shit up as he goes
He actually knows, it's a news52 in all the forms "dark for being dark, an initial plan going nowhere and characters who doesn't act like the original characters"
I am not opposed to Henry Cavill as Batman in the DCU
16:35 you gotta admit the flash s4 suit was the best, dont get me wrong the newer ones are still good (excluding s5)
John Papsidera has been appointed the casting director for the DCU
Zack Snyder was never fit to lead the DC movie universe. I like the guy, but his philosephies are totally wrong. James Gunn understands characters and the heart behind them. He made me tear up over Rockets Friends dying, or Ratcatcher summoning her army of rats. Snyder couldnt even make me emotional over Supermans death. DC has incredible characters and Im glad we now have someone who chooses substance over style.
Another one: DO NOT have ANY suicide squad
LIKE NONE AT ALL
DC deserves a good live action adaptation

Here are my opinions on the DCEU some might be controversial
Insane to say Henry was a bad super man casting
I think Paul walker would’ve been a good Barry Allen if younger
And Ezra miller would’ve been a good trickster.
7:59 Actually, she did skip out on The Incredible Hulk. Still a butt ton of films, though
The Batfleck suit in the flash was great cuz it was blue
I never had cable, so naturally i grew up a dc fan. The Batman animated series was on regular tv. Got me into JLA comics
Maybe in whatever the big overarching story the first saga has to tell Barry dies in the final battle leaving Wally to take over as the main flash.
basicially lets get the new 52 supergirl with Anger Mangement issues and almost becoming a red lantern
As a beginning for character arc (like the news52 storyline) it works
The problem with Ezra is that his character was more like Waller or Bart than it was Barry.
Barry's... not a loser. He's very down to earth, he has a charm to him. He knows how to talk to people and is often a mediator in the Justice League.
Wally and Bart are far more antisocial(although Wally is a bit of a flirt) and would have fit the awkward aspect much better.
That's why Grant played Barry so well. He had no issues making friends or getting dates. He just loved one woman and struggled with processing his traumas.
Have no idea how someone with so little care for the source material and the characters got so much backing from fans for his 3+ hour movie
