Honestly, if you can surf well in small waves, scaling-up to bigger waves won't be an issue in terms of catching and riding them. You might have to get used to the timing of a more powerful wave, but the quickness you develop in smaller surf to pop-up as soon as you feel the wave breaking lends itself to knowing when to stand in larger waves... you just feel more energy. My only advice is to REALLY dial in your paddling and duck diving, because if you can't duck dive larger waves well, you'll get gassed or get beat up and maybe lose your board, which makes you a liability in the line-up. If you can't paddle hard/fast, you'll find yourself out of position... so start swimming laps in a pool when it's flat. Oh, and know where the channel is!
Slowly getting used to the power of the bigger waves , not letting the power startle/scare you when you wipe out or take one on the head, and being able to face them head on and to duck dive deep enough into the calm part below the whitewash is a big part; with big waves that break in front of you the big difference between small waves is u cant just turn around and try to ride the white wash, they'll thrash you way too hard and take your board, u have to face them head on with a duck dive try not to ditch your board Especially if others are near you, so ya the #1 thing as waves get bigger: be aware of others, bc consequences are bigger.
Typically there will be set waves that break bigger than the regular waves, so as you progress and go out on days that are in your comfort zone, you will start to catch more set waves which will get you comfortable on bigger waves and will make you naturally progress to bigger waves.
I was gonna ask the same thing. Cause I live on the northeast coast and I'm taking a vacation to surf in Hawaii. The most I've shred were 6 to 10 feet with maybe a few barrels, but I really wanna hit real waves
Can you make a video on foot positioning specifically on a short board, such as where your back foot should be while pumping (ex on the tail pad or off of it) and how and when to shift your feet while surfing a wave cause I know your supposed to shift your feet forward while surfing a smaller wave, so you don’t apply too much weight to the back of the board and bog it down but I just want to know how much further forward you should put that back foot because sometimes I want to go for a turn on a small wave but I find my back foot is just too far off the tail pad and then I don’t have time, to quickly put my foot back and hit a section; essentially I just want to know where the sweet spot is while pumping, so this would be incredibly helpful if you could go over that..please?🙏🏽!
Can you please explain proper/easier ways to handle a big white wash and big waves, especially when getting held under. Do you ball up the whole time after wiping out? Bail your board if unable to duck dive? I can’t find videos on these... 🙏🏼
Been surfing for 3 years now, just got rid of my trusty wavestorm with a single fin on it for a Thomas Patrick 9'6". I ride a CatchSurf Skipper 6' as well but there's something a a nice longboard and how they glide that makes them my stick of choice. Nothing wrong with loveboards. :) Great tips for novices guys keep it up!
Going surfing tomorrow and thanks for the video. These videos help me with my surfing and I think about what you have to teach every time I go out. How to Rip - FTW!!!!!!!!
Nice and simple video that explains most of the basics, thank you. One thing i do i carry plastic bags to put over my feet or hands to get into a winter wet suit, makes it alot easier.
I did the bag trick this morning, works Wells, especially for the feet. The shoehorn is for doffing ankles. It helps when you're old, tired, and crampy.
@@jimmccarley9609 i know the feeling, I will try shoe horn, I have trouble trying to get my shoulder and arm out of a front side zip wet suite, had to ask for help a few times...the struggles of old age
Hi, I have almost finished 15 surf classes from a great coach, each class goes for an hour. So my issues still exist- 1. Not able to read wave 2. Not able to get the soft spot whilst paddling 3. Have skin bruises on my lower chest 4. Nose diving 5. Not able to turn. My instructor has told me the mistakes and solutions for above, yet am not able to achieve my desired result.
Another great video, I'll be heading out in an hour or so. My take offs are good, quick to the feet. Now I'm starting to shift weight, heels, toes, up, and back. Had to take two months off for hernia surgery. All better now.
Great tips and vids! I went to maui in june. Watched most of your beginner vids right up to my vacation. Went out and only could get up to my knees. Also learned should’ve wore booties. Every beach out there pretty much coral all the way out. Had a blast only could get up to my knees. But I was close to the standing part. Stoked to go out more here in Washington state! Thanks again.
Nice work Brian, I hope our videos helped. Getting to you knees is common in the early days, try slowing things down at this point and bring your front leg through as soon as you can. At that point slowly take your hands off the board and stand up, staying low to maintain balance!
Great videos, you have helped me get back into surfing with all your tips. Can you do a video on difference of fin types and the different tails on a board? Got a fresh new stick and I dont know what type of fin to get for my bat tail type board. Maybe you can maybe you cant I'll still watch your awsome videos and progress through my surfing activities. Cheers!
Please clarify what is meant by beginner surfers. I wasn’t sure if these are people first learning to stand up or learning to ride along greenface waves or already doing that and learning to pump.
Good tips thank you, Ryan, its good to know that your tips really do help me progress, when the swell eases a tad i find this helps also, pl pardom moi ! 💃🏄🏂🎿⛵🚀
hey guys, i am wondering to buy a HYPTO KRYPTO because i saw in your videos advising to get a fish board, what do you think about this model? i can do nice cutbacks and other tricks but i really wanna a board to help me to learn some Aerial. Is this board a nice one to pick? I usually surf small waves, like in your videos. thanksss
Hey Lucas, I think that board would be a good option, or certainly something like the Hypto. There are heaps of other boards similar to it that would fit what you are after. Do lots of research before you make your choice!
Love the videos! I’ve just progressed to a smaller board and I’m trying to learn to duck dive. I’ve got the technique from your video on it but every time I get under the wave my board gets ripped out of my hands!! any suggestions??
You might also want to check your wave selection. If the waves you’re catching are closing out too quickly, that could cause this. Alternatively, you may also be catching the wave too late?
I feel you. I use a mark on the board to move up, and back from. If moving back, looking up, getting in earlier, and angling don't help, then waves too steep, quick. It's exhausting, and less fun, getting rolled without reward.
Is there anyway to get rid of my fear of sharks or stingrays I don’t know why but I’m just so nervous! Maybe I should just man up. anyone got suggestions?
Hey guys Ryan here, check out my new version here. ruclips.net/video/_ImGueVdAaM/видео.html

@@victorg3782 And the faster you paddle at an oncoming wall of whitewater, the better off you are when you duck dive.

Sounds good Olav!

Excellent.
A video about step-ups would help a lot.
(When to use; board size; and benefits of using a step-up board.)
Great idea!
Love the channel. I'm 45 and a beginner, but I think you are a great teacher. Love taking the knowledge to the beach.
Hey Clifford, thank you for the feedback. Hope it helps you out

We touch on this a little in 'How To Duck Dive Like A Pro', but good idea :)
DO NOT bail, specially if there are people around you. Better to get a good beating than hurting someone.

I am a teenager looking to find the right board, I can turn but am looking to go a little further in my skills. What board would u recommend?
That all depends on what board type ur on now and what u want to do
A little thicker of a shortboard
@@laidbacklocalproductions6717 I want to start doing better turns and tricks. I am on a foamy now. What do u recommend ?
Caden is right something like a fish or a longer short board
Lily Rose I would get a short fibreglass surfboard that is a little bit thicker also maybe try a friends board and see how you like that
What about a bigger board like the one you are surfing like the smaller one
Yes I am new 4 once

Why are all surfers so hot?
Hello, thank you for the video! It helped me a lot. I may ask I bought a 6,2 32L fish. I weigh 78 kg and 6.0 feet tall. Is it ok to progress?
Depends on what kind of waves ur surfing but that sounds great man, keep it up!
Love the videos! I’ve just progressed to a smaller board and I’m trying to learn to duck dive. I’ve got the technique from
your video on it but every time I get under the wave my board gets ripped out of my hands!! any suggestions??
Hold tighter! Also, try performing your duck dive earlier, so that you can get underneath the turbulence of the wave.
I’m having trouble taking off right, I feel like whenever I try to catch a decent wave I nose dive
Try paddling into waves on a slight angle rather than straight ahead, this might help.
You might also want to check your wave selection. If the waves you’re catching are closing out too quickly, that could cause this. Alternatively, you may also be catching the wave too late?
maybe you can try a longer board, or position yourself more to the back of your present board
I feel you. I use a mark on the board to move up, and back from. If moving back, looking up, getting in earlier, and angling don't help, then waves too steep, quick. It's exhausting, and less fun, getting rolled without reward.
