El Jaleo is a moment during the Flamenco dance, where clapping happens and people celebrate the dancer. The objects (ceramics, tiles, etc) around are similar to what you would find in Sevilla in Andalucia, where Flamenco is at home. The region is home to the Alhambra in Granada, famous for its Arab architecture and mosaics. The south of Spain was home to Arab people from 700 to 1492. My grandma was Spanish, near Andalucia. She used "Jaleo" as a word when children were noisy and loud: "Stop that Jaleo!" she would say when she reprimanded us for playing too loudly. You can also say "Qué Jaleo!" Like "What a mess" when a space is disorderly or cluttered. 😂 I didn't know about this painting, thanks Prof Liu. Loved your reaction ❤
@@juliepellan5974 Thanks Julie! It was the opposite reaction for me. I knew all about Jaleo from my childhood days and my grandmother -und nothing about the painting 😂🤣
I felt like that seeing Rembrandt's The Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum. One of the BEST experiences in a lifetime is to see a painting you thought you knew IRL and be stunned by it.🎉🎉🎉
Prof Lieu, you're the best! ❤ Now I need to go to Boston just to visit that museum and stand there with my mouth open. JSS = = genius. Thanks so much for sharing!
There’s a reason my figure painting professor would never shut up about John Singer Sargent! If he knew I didn’t recognize this piece he’d probably whack me in the back of the head with a palette box. I’m glad I’ve seen it now though!
I love seeing the different reactions people have in a museum. I give tours and staff an info desk at a museum a couple blocks away and there are so many rooms and so many hours of the week that there is space for both the loud and the quiet. The prof’s gasping shock is a good reaction … but it’s not as good as the 5 year old who returned at the end of his visit to tell me, “We found a peacock!” and walked away waving his hands in the air like a tail, howling like a peacock. 😂❤
Oh, the setting for the painting is perfect and really expands the scene to include the viewer.
It was so beautiful, Gardner had the most brilliant eye!!-Prof Lieu

The way the frame is situated and the objects around it make it look like you could step right into it

I understand your reaction - I adore John Singer Sargent! ❤

excellent ma'am
I did the same thing when I saw it
Nothing like going to a museum and having people yammering on and filming. 🙄🙄🙄
