- Tailbone (or coccyx) pain can be caused by things like childbirth, trauma, or even prolonged sitting. Doctor Jen, a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist, is here with some great stretches to help reduce tailbone pain. Watch more Dr. Jen videos: • Pelvic Floor Therapy w...
Starting off in quadruped or all fours, a cat/cow, cat/camel, or cat/dog is a great way to get the tailbone area moving. Also, lateral tilts in this position, or wagging the tail, will help loosen up the area as well. Focus on the pelvic movements with these.
These can also be done lying down on your back or in a hooklying position. Then doing a wide leg double knee to chest really helps open up the pelvic floor area. If you have good flexibility, the happy baby pose can be used for an even deeper stretch.
Finally, a deep squat in a wide leg position will also help. If you need to hold onto a sturdy chair or wall, make sure you do so to keep your balance.

Hey... May I know the cause of ur tailbone pain? Coz I am suffering from same due to I fell down on floor 7 months ago...
Hi! It’s good to see Dr. Jen again!
This is soooo helpful! These gentle stretches helped me get my mobility back
I just started doing pelvic floor engagement to get my core activated. So happy she addressed that at the beginning of the video! Aha moment for me!
Thanks so so much for this, I’m a highly competitive rhythmic gymnast and I have a competition tomorrow, my tailbone has been sore latley and I wanted to get rid of some of the pain before competing, this helped a lot ❤️
You're welcome.
Very educational. Always struggled with pelvic floor work. Thank you Dr Jen and Dr Jo :)
You're welcome!
I saw all your videos about Tailbone pain and I can confirm they all works to me. Thank you very much fron Russia.
You're welcome.
I am feeling lass pain now because my tailbone pain came from middle of no where that only happened because I was sitting a long time and this never happened before but I will keep on doing this because this is more safe
How is your pain now???
Same thing happening to me now, any tips?
@@JonahSilbert how are you feeling now, how long did rehab take?
Same. Fell asleep on couch, woke up with excruciating pain lower back and tail bone. Hurts to walk and sit, have been getting chills and nauseous. I'm a male, and have never had this before. At times it takes My breath away. I work at furniture delivery and always stretch and do body weight exercise, but this happened when I wasn't working. Fell asleep on crappy little couch and almost went to hospital cus I thought it might have been kidney stones again but this felt alittle different, it's only lower back and tail bone area. With kidney stones it was lower back pain and groin pain, so I knew this was different. Kinda almost feel like this has been worse than kidney stone pain only cus stone pain kinda came in waves, while this is just constant and hurts standing and sitting. Plus in early morning when first started it felt like I had chills and fever slightly. Definitely been freaking me out. Gotta work I'm two days and really hope this will Dissipate
This was great. I could immediately feel the difference and recognize how stiff the pelvis muscle areas were. Thanks so much!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for wonderful explanation.
You’re welcome.
Hi Dr jo
Thanks for sharing this video
It was a good one with clear explanation ❤
You're welcome, and thanks.

Thanks, and you're welcome!
Nice video and useful information. Thanks
Thanks, and you're welcome.
My tailbone pain happened 31 years ago this week while giving birth to our son. Ever since then, I experience random tailbone pain. I do yoga 2-3 times a week which include these exact exercises, but I will now do them more often knowing they should help with my tailbone pain..Thank you for this.
You're welcome.
slid down the stairs as a kid about 6 years ago and had pain for over a year until it went away. as of this week the pain has came back like it was 6 years ago, i can’t sit comfortably without making a 😬 face. moral of the story i’m really hoping this helps as i have a fear of going to the doctor!
Suffers with tailbone pain since February. I have already done two infiltrations and physiotherapy totally focused on Kegels Exercises. It got worse and worse. I gave up everything, totally frustrating, because besides the pain, everything is very expensive to get treatment and pay for an incorrect treatment. Gratitude for this video Dr. Jo, because this kind of pain is unfortunately ignored by many professionals.
You’re welcome.
I actually subscribed when I had problems with my arms as I had a weak right shoulder and every time I exercised I could feel pain then I also watched your lower back pain video and omg these exercises helped so much. But just recently again I have well so I thought pain in my lower back but it wasn't as I had done lower back exercises and my leg exercises which still didn't work. Then I realised it was my tailbone that was the issue. Omg im so glad yourself and Dr jen have put this video up its helped me so much. Thank you. Much appreciated
You're welcome. Glad they helped.
Awesomeness!!! Thank you. Definitely felt some relief ❤❤❤❤
You're welcome.
Oh, thank you so much for these movements! I have trouble with this area occasionally.
You're welcome!
This helped a lot thank you!
You're welcome!
You are a real blessing, Thankyou very much
Thanks, and you're welcome.
I fell once, about 30 years ago and broke my tail bone. The tip actually points out, in the opposite direction it should. It would pain me off and on through the years if I sat for too long, but just recently, as I've lost quite a bit of weight over the last year, it has gotten worse. I think that I lost some of my "padding" back there. A week ago I sat up wrong on a doctor's exam table and it has been aggravated ever since. I'm so glad to find this video so I can try something gentle to see if it will help.
I hope it helps.
I fractured my tailbone.
And these stretches truly helped once inflammation went down ❤️
Glad they helped.
Was it harder for you in the beginning when you were doing the stretches?
When will the inflammation go down?
That’s my problem , the inflammation is so bad !the pain is crazy , I’ve had 2 injections this year and they did nothing .
😳 ouch!!!
thanks a lot ma'am, these exercises relieved my pain.
You're welcome.
I have started doing tail bone pain exercises yesterday, previously i was squeezing my pelvic floor muscles as advised by physio
Hoping your exercises will help
Does that help
Thank you for this video. I can tell this is making a positive difference after a couple of sessions.
You're welcome.
Thank you for sharing this information. I've been having tailbone pain for 2 and a half years now, no idea what caused it, didn't injure myself from any accident or fall but I do sit most of the time for work. Hoping to do some of these to relieve the pain as it's incredibly frustrating! Thanks again!
You're welcome!

My 15 gymnast daughter has this. Talked several doctors, X-rays, MRIs, no real suggestions to help her with this between professionals.
If you can get her in to see a pelvic floor PT, that's really the best option.
Thank you!!
You're welcome!

I’ve had tailbone pain for over a year and it came out of no where. But listening to this and thinking back, I was in a pretty intense lift program and I remember having the tightest muscles in my glutes. So maybe that’s why??
broke my tailbone bad in a motorcycle crash. Doctor just told me it would be uncomfortable forever. After about 8 months the pain became unbearable when sitting. This video has helped a lot thank you 🙏🏼
You're welcome.
With happy baby / knees to chest - is the lower back meant to be flat on the ground, or do we allow it to curl up as the knees come up?
Thanks so much! I'll try them and hope it helps. I was doing kegels and it wasn't helping.
You're welcome!
Oh my goodness...thank you to the moon!!!
You're welcome!
Will these exercises work for coccygeus muscle pain? I either tore or strained it and looking for safe exercises to build the strength back in that area. Thanks in advance!
Very impressive!
Can we do these stretches even in l4-l5? Because i had tailbone pain initially it's been a 10months now
I’m going to say, this is my first time trying this and I felt better
Glad they are helping.
Love it❤️
Thank for this video, I have immediate relief after doing these exercises. My question is are there any exercises I can do in a work environment ? I work 12 hr shifts with long bouts of sitting, and standing and lots of walking 16k steps in a 12hr shift.
Happy Labor Day & Bless you with Health!
I love the pelvic community
What do you do if you have both tailbone pain and stress incontinence?
Love it! Thank you so much! Is it safe to start doing these exercises a week aftervaginal delivery?
Thanks, and you're welcome! As long as you are cleared by your doctor, they should be okay.
Thank you for all your help! I’ll try these, I took a great fall a couple weeks ago and I can’t sit properly anymore

Can the exercises be safely done after a lumbar laminectomy and bone graft? I am 6 months post op.
Thank you doctor jo I have tailbone pain
You're welcome.
Thank you Dr Joe, she was an excellent guest, very explanatory. I just recently had a hard fall on my tailbone hiking. Question: should these exercises be done immediately after the injury itself? I won’t hold you to your answer (disclaimer alert disclaimer alert! Lol).
You're welcome, and thanks! It really depends on how much pain there is, and if there was a fracture. Generally, gentle stretching can be started immediately as long as it doesn't increase the pain.
can you do PCL stretches
Such a great instinct relief witg this exercise. Was dealing with severe pain and pressure in my tailbone with motrin and this awesome video helped me so much. Thank you so much 👏🫶👏
You're welcome. Glad it helped.
Any alternative for those that can’t kneel because of knee pain or knee replacement
THANK YOU those kagls hurt me soooo much
You're welcome.
I've been having this pain for two years could you let me know what could be causing it?
Can this help with IBS and spastic colon symptoms?
I have IC,kegals are a No for sure. Great video.

tulang ekor sakit saat mengangkat beban yang berat, apakah dengan gerakan seperti itu akan membantu dok?
So the side to side wag move is painful but it feels better.. should I continue with the exercise or no?
Can we do this exercises after eating?
I noticed how she said tailbone pain doesn't happen overnight. I've never had tailbone pain, I woke up today with some horrible pain. I did these stretches, which helped tremendously. I'm curious how this happens overnight. can this be caused by sleeping in a bad position?
I litterly cried when docter Jen explained what the tail bone was attached to and that all the keegles might not be so helpful. My mind is totally blown. I'm very uncomfortable with moving my body in certain ways because of what has happened to me it never occurred to me that that could cause pain. I will work outside my comfort zone and try these again later.
I woke up with pretty terrible pain, no previous injury and I can’t sit down or get up without pain, I’ve tried all stretches and pain is not going away or getting better.
That is my problem too I do all kind of starching but never go a way the Taliban pain
I was seeing a chiropractor who said I had pelvic floor dysfunction and my tailbone is pointing out. Is it better to see a pelvic PT or the chiropractor?
This is excellent. I do have a question, can you do these stretches if you have osteoporosis ? Thank you!
Thanks. It really depends on how severe it is and where it is. It's best to check with your doctor first.
This is the third time that my tailbone pain came back, the one before was pretty serious, and now after lockdown I went running around doing basketball, now I'm again having tailbone pain
When can I return to exercise ?
How about dislocated pelvic bone..do i have to have a binder
I fell down the stairs the other night and my tailbone has been incredibly sore. I've been adjusting my daily activities and want to do these stretches but is there any safe exercise that I can do that won't aggrevate the injury?
Hi buddy. I'm in day 3 of this same situation.....how many days did it take for you to get well? And what did you do
Does it may cure without medicine?
The gynecologist I went to last said I had pelvic floor dysfunction but never sent me to pt for it she only suggested kegels. Those never helped and I’m still in pain years later. Ive got other female & period problems as well as fibromyalgia though so often my tailbone pain gets overlooked.
If you are able to go see a PT pelvic floor specialist now, hopefully it would help.
I had complete histerectomy three months back and I have tail bone pain can I do these stretches now please reply mam
Can I still join the gym even with tail bone pain?
So I fell down the stairs and bruised my tailbone a month ago. As a middle aged man, it is SLOWLY getting better but still in pain all the time. My question is this: Lying on my back is the worst and most painful position possible. One, is this normal, and two, I assume I can do the other exercises and skip the floor ones. I did get X-rays and no fracture, just a bad bruise. Thanks in advance for your advice!
Is this pain permanent , as I have it from past 1 year, and it hurt a lot
In the happy baby is my spine suposed to be curved ? Can't see to have a straight back
I am almost 2 months post op from a coccyectomy. In serious pain worse than before surgery. I thought years after the break was bad but it doesn't compare to this. My surgeon keeps saying I'm not healed..but every other person's "good coccyectomy removal" story is so short in terms of recovery time. Also am using a cane due to shakiness in my right leg. Have you ever heard anything like this?? I'm almost to the point I regret having surgery!
Unfortunately,, it's different for everyone depending on what your diagnosis is, how long you've had it, and how your body reacts to surgery. So everyone heals at a different rate. If you are not going to physical therapy, it might be good to ask your surgeon for a referral to a PT who specializes in the pelvic floor (sometimes called a Women's Health PT even though they see men and children as well).
Can do these without innerwear?
Can have nonveg food during pain?
Are these stretches safe in pregnancy? Plz reply. Crying with pain
I'm experiencing stress incontinence and tailbone pain postpartum. Should I avoid kegels to avoid tightening up more and follow this video or move forward with the exercises in the stress incontinence video first? The incontinence is the more pressing issue I'd like to resolve.
Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If you haven't been to a PT who specializes in the pelvic floor (a Pelvic Floor PT, sometimes called a Women's Health PT, even though they see men and children as well), it might be worth getting an evaluation to see if they can help.
