  • Tailbone (or coccyx) pain can be caused by things like childbirth, trauma, or even prolonged sitting. Doctor Jen, a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist, is here with some great stretches to help reduce tailbone pain. Watch more Dr. Jen videos: • Pelvic Floor Therapy w...
Starting off in quadruped or all fours, a cat/cow, cat/camel, or cat/dog is a great way to get the tailbone area moving. Also, lateral tilts in this position, or wagging the tail, will help loosen up the area as well. Focus on the pelvic movements with these.
These can also be done lying down on your back or in a hooklying position. Then doing a wide leg double knee to chest really helps open up the pelvic floor area. If you have good flexibility, the happy baby pose can be used for an even deeper stretch.
Finally, a deep squat in a wide leg position will also help. If you need to hold onto a sturdy chair or wall, make sure you do so to keep your balance.

Same. Fell asleep on couch, woke up with excruciating pain lower back and tail bone. Hurts to walk and sit, have been getting chills and nauseous. I'm a male, and have never had this before. At times it takes My breath away. I work at furniture delivery and always stretch and do body weight exercise, but this happened when I wasn't working. Fell asleep on crappy little couch and almost went to hospital cus I thought it might have been kidney stones again but this felt alittle different, it's only lower back and tail bone area. With kidney stones it was lower back pain and groin pain, so I knew this was different. Kinda almost feel like this has been worse than kidney stone pain only cus stone pain kinda came in waves, while this is just constant and hurts standing and sitting. Plus in early morning when first started it felt like I had chills and fever slightly. Definitely been freaking me out. Gotta work I'm two days and really hope this will Dissipate

Suffers with tailbone pain since February. I have already done two infiltrations and physiotherapy totally focused on Kegels Exercises. It got worse and worse. I gave up everything, totally frustrating, because besides the pain, everything is very expensive to get treatment and pay for an incorrect treatment. Gratitude for this video Dr. Jo, because this kind of pain is unfortunately ignored by many professionals.

I actually subscribed when I had problems with my arms as I had a weak right shoulder and every time I exercised I could feel pain then I also watched your lower back pain video and omg these exercises helped so much. But just recently again I have well so I thought pain in my lower back but it wasn't as I had done lower back exercises and my leg exercises which still didn't work. Then I realised it was my tailbone that was the issue. Omg im so glad yourself and Dr jen have put this video up its helped me so much. Thank you. Much appreciated

I fell once, about 30 years ago and broke my tail bone. The tip actually points out, in the opposite direction it should. It would pain me off and on through the years if I sat for too long, but just recently, as I've lost quite a bit of weight over the last year, it has gotten worse. I think that I lost some of my "padding" back there. A week ago I sat up wrong on a doctor's exam table and it has been aggravated ever since. I'm so glad to find this video so I can try something gentle to see if it will help.

Does it may cure without medicine?

The gynecologist I went to last said I had pelvic floor dysfunction but never sent me to pt for it she only suggested kegels. Those never helped and I’m still in pain years later. Ive got other female & period problems as well as fibromyalgia though so often my tailbone pain gets overlooked.

If you are able to go see a PT pelvic floor specialist now, hopefully it would help.

So I fell down the stairs and bruised my tailbone a month ago. As a middle aged man, it is SLOWLY getting better but still in pain all the time. My question is this: Lying on my back is the worst and most painful position possible. One, is this normal, and two, I assume I can do the other exercises and skip the floor ones. I did get X-rays and no fracture, just a bad bruise. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I am almost 2 months post op from a coccyectomy. In serious pain worse than before surgery. I thought years after the break was bad but it doesn't compare to this. My surgeon keeps saying I'm not healed..but every other person's "good coccyectomy removal" story is so short in terms of recovery time. Also am using a cane due to shakiness in my right leg. Have you ever heard anything like this?? I'm almost to the point I regret having surgery!

Unfortunately,, it's different for everyone depending on what your diagnosis is, how long you've had it, and how your body reacts to surgery. So everyone heals at a different rate. If you are not going to physical therapy, it might be good to ask your surgeon for a referral to a PT who specializes in the pelvic floor (sometimes called a Women's Health PT even though they see men and children as well).

I'm experiencing stress incontinence and tailbone pain postpartum. Should I avoid kegels to avoid tightening up more and follow this video or move forward with the exercises in the stress incontinence video first? The incontinence is the more pressing issue I'd like to resolve.

Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If you haven't been to a PT who specializes in the pelvic floor (a Pelvic Floor PT, sometimes called a Women's Health PT, even though they see men and children as well), it might be worth getting an evaluation to see if they can help.
