Seems like extreme social anxiety and depression. I hope the Japanese stigma about mental illness changes drastically so these people can get the help they desperately need.

As someone who’s often went months in near total social isolation, I think in many cases the mental illnesses are pathological and it’s the hikikomoris rejection of society that causes the mental illness and not vice versa. Often, these people simply just give up trying to assimilate into society. Maybe they’ve been rejected or treated very harshly during their lives and they give up trying to being a participating member of the world around them. This causes them to go into isolation, which then creates an array of psychological afflictions.

I live with a congenital birth defect. I'm not from Japan, but I can relate with this people and this style of life, when you stick out, you just want to be left alone, the problem is you don't have access to a good job, love relationships or even healthcare, this is truly living in the fringe parts of society, and it suits us, we are disliked by many, most of us don't have the interest in becoming the image of a brand, activists for disabled people, or the inclusivity token worker in a corporation. Just give some dignity to us, we are humans after all.

Most hikikomoris are very intelligent people, they are not mentally ill, I would say they are having a shamanic experience while their society labels them as depressed or schizophrenics. I feel for them as I consider myself a quasi hikikomori in a western society, but I don't understand them being THAT passive closed in a room in front of a screen, that's a suicide road to the physical and mental health. I believe most hikikomoris need to go rural and search for more contact with Nature(then enjoy their pc sessions in the evening)

i tell you first hand that in Australia and in US ppl still tries to fit in, it's not a culture of discipline and respecting order and authority, but still a culture of having to conduct yourself in a certain way so that people may consider you cool which in turn allows you to thrive. In other words, there is still a kind of cultural or behavioral hierarchy. E.g. being fit > not being fit; extrovert > introvert; fun > serious.

To stand out in Japan is to risk being ostracised, either overtly or covertly. The society's suppression of individual freedom and freedom of expression is the issue. It accounts for Japan's cleanliness, its rule-based societal norms, its politeness. However, the suppression of the animalistic human spirit (or honne) will likely lead to illness. These Hikikomori's must be allowed to behave the way they like in society without the fear of being despised or ostracised. This will require greater tolerance and empathy of the Japanese society for individual differences and for minority groups. After all, the mal-treatment of the minority by the majority is a form of social bullying.

Communication is key. Be open and honest with your parents. Explain to them that you don't want to be a hermit for years but you are struggling to cope with life at the moment. It's not that you are lazy or stupid. Tell them you are ashamed of not going to school, so much that it's hard to go back now. Tell them you need help getting back on your feet. There is help out there. Take it in small steps.
The first step is always admitting a problem.
Step two is opening up and asking for help. Sometimes we can't solve our problems alone so please don't be afraid or ashamed to ask. You family only want what's best for you, just like you. Talk to them.

i lowkey feel bad fir these types of individuals because i think they are the type of people that refuses to conform to the typical blue collar like lifestyle that most modern societies pressure every adults to be like as well as give us this false impression that is what will make us have a more happier or productive individuals in life. i think productivity is definitely there as you arecontributing to that societys workforce but sometimes as a result, this type of lifestyle is not for some peoples cup of tea especially when i think of extremely creative people or people that prefer to live life by their own rules. it can be quite challenging and lonesome i think if their ages are not past the retirement age because people and society expects them to act a certain way than what they have pictured themselves to be the most comfortable or they are being authentic to thenselves. i wish in a place like japan, they could create special community for these people so that at least they dont have to feel lonely and may find like minded people there as well as create job opportunities for them that best suits their creative talents. it is very common for a lot of hikikomori to engage in activities like art, videogaming, reading, or writing. i get why many of them stop attending schools because of the social aspect required and i dont think many of them suck at socializing but it could be more of them having severe social anxiety to the point where they wouls rather just not talk at all and rather do things on their own independently. what sucks about modern school systems is that their environment does not suit every personality. i think people that are more towards introverted thinking will feel quite overwhelmed by being around too many people as well as expected to talk and get their work done in class.

I'm curious as to how rural hikikomori compare to urban. I wonder if a large part of the problem for many of them is the fact that they're stuck in a large city that's like perpetually drowning in a sea of people. If I was poor (but not so poor as to be homeless), had no motorized vehicle, had no job, and was stuck in a city like that, I could see myself falling into self-incarceration as well.
The combination of big city living and not driving sounds like an absolute hell to me. Couple that with a severe lack of disposable income and lack of attraction from the opposite sex and I'd say that's a perfect recipe for a hikikomori.
I get it; I absolutely get it....and life only sucks harder the older you get. All your friends disappear as you approach your 30's (because all the fun and attractive ones are all getting married and shit and no longer have time and disposable income for hobbies)...and God forbid if you slip up and fall off the life Wagon. Anything that takes a lot of effort to consistently do (work/school/exercise routine/sobriety/diet/not smoking/[insert grindset here]) is oh so easy to fall out of the habit of doing...and working your way back into that metaphorical wagon is oh so damn hard...and time only exacerbates that difficulty.
    Yeah...I get it.

    • @defaulted9485
      @defaulted9485 2 года назад +1

Rural Hikikomori cannot be classified as Hikikomori because they goes out and can still avoid meeting anyone. But you can see them doing the same thing in the riverbanks or cut log under a tree. Many farmers does the same, the difference is that nobody sees the vast empty and equally dangerous space that is of a river or a cliff. Rather we as an urban dweller romanticize every place that is not urban as a releasing unshackling bounds of walls, a certain freedom to move. But at the same time, solitary people are actively prevented to go away from a city for the lack of retreat housing AND land prices rising amidst economic crisis. AFAIK, village lodges or cheap rents are very scarce for Japan City Planning was made to reduce underdeveloped regions and streamlining tourist flow.
I believe everyone secretly felt the same just in different spaces. If not, alcoholism or hedonism or materialism wouldn't be a big thing. Everyone at everyplace of time is carrying a burden of proof to succeed in life, but city makes it exponentially harder for natural born kind farmer or gardener to fit in the concrete jungle.

How to not turn into an HnK:
    1. Always participate
    2. Don't make isolation a habit
    3. Make sure you socialize with people so you are always comfortable with talking
Once you lose your social skills and become awkward, that's when it starts. You start talking less and less. By the time you realize it you are stuck in your room. You can't do anything at this point, because you are scared of talking to people and how they will judge you. You are now stuck. It's a horrible situation to be in. It may sound ridiculous but it's harder than you think.

    HANDLING DISAPPOINTMENT
He knows the way I take; when He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
    JOB 23:10
How do you handle disappointment so that you don't walk away from life thinking, "Well, it's all over now. I'll never be the same. I'll never have what I've wanted. It's gone...forever"? You handle it, my friend, by faith understanding that disappointment is God's appointment.

He COULD have autism which would explain why he's ostracized. Autistic people often fall short of acting like neurotypicals and miss a lot of social cues. In Japan where society has a lot of strict rules, there's no room for someone like this. It's really a shame.

Feeling uneasy, alienated and unworthy strongly encourage no eye-contact. People 'miss'-more like avoid social cues when they're starved of inclusion and human contact, especially growing up. Schools and society being so competitive, individualist, superficial and alienating should be the emphasis.

Friendship with another introvert with similar hobbies, but more socialized, could help him. I know from experience that it has a healing effect. Friendship with an extrovert not only scares off a loner, but is usually not needed by a person with an already established social circle.

Japanese society is obsessed with working hard, long hours, forgetting emotions, standing out
for excellence among their workmates and carrying on.
Life isn't like that. They aren't robots and jobs are hard to get. When parents die, a single guy is all alone
and can't cope with the loneliness as well. Young ones give up as they aren't valued at work even if they are blessed to get a job.
Parents also heap expectations on them. No wonder they give up.

Biggest problem is that Japan's idea of help is to just tell the Hikkikomori to do whatever they tell them, and to just stop being hikkikomori.
They became that way, because people are too fucking obnoxious there to deal with. Why are they a lot of times virgins? Women are self entitled pricks there of the newer generations, and possibly a bit of the older ones to.
Why do they not get out much? Because it's better to not walk in a world where any mistake can be an excuse to put you behind bars in a place that has a 99% conviction rate, and there's no way that 100% of those convictions are all guilty. They legit have insurance just for people accused of being train molesters. Why? Because it's becoming that common to have false accusations thrown for personal satisfaction (of putting someone you don't like for whatever reason behind bars), to the point that insurance is needed.

The guy is also a hoarder. Big emotional and psychological problems. We should not feel sorry for them, we should help if we can. The pressure of society is real. Doing nothing and hiding away as a hikki is easier of course. People need to stand up for themselves so they don't get pushed around. Tell people to shutup when they are wrong. Don't take crap from anybody. If you see someone being abused or bullied like student or employee, tell the bully to Shutup. Good luck everyone
