It's even funnier knowing Letterman himself was really difficult to get to laugh naturally.
And Cruise doesn't capitalize on it. Letterman hated it when guests were pushing him to laugh.

The vibes in this interview are so similiar to that of Bradley Cooper and Jimmy Fallon, every serious question (trying to get back on track) is met with laughter from the crowd and/or the guest, like there is just some air of humour hovering around the room. It's absolutely lovely!

But the oxygen story _was_ damn funny, I remember this from when it aired. It's a toss-up which was more funny, Tom's uncontrollable laughter or the story itself.
Watching this again, I can see how the entire appearance was kind of odd. Not surprising, as Tom _is_ a bit odd.
